The eyes are one of the most revealing (有启迪作用的) instruments of body language.Keith, seventeen, from Montclair,New Jersey, learned the hard way about one message the eyes can convey (传达).“I had a teacher who graded heavily on classroom discussion,”Keith says.“He seemed to have a strong ability to know just when I didn’t have the answer.I couldn’t figure out how he could be so sharp. Then it dawned on me. Whenever I didn’t know the answer,I would avoid looking at him. When I did know what to say,I always stared straight back at him. From that moment on,I taught myself to look him in the eye, whether I knew the work or not,That trick has saved me a lot of trouble.”
Many people, including some policemen, believe eye contact is a good test of honesty. If someone can’t look you dead in the eye, then he or she is not playing straight, they insist. After many experiments, however,a number of experts have concluded that good liars can fake (伪造) eye contact.
Eye contact, although not a sure sign of honesty,is a clear way to show interest in another person. When a person looks at you and continues to do so,you know his attention is focused on you. When he turns his head away, his mind is probably elsewhere. But there are exceptions.A shy person may have trouble making and maintaining eye contact,no matter how interested he is in the other person. And certain nationalities, such as the British and the Germans, are much less oriented to eyeball-to-eyeball contact than, say, the French and the Arabs.

58.The British,while talking, .
A.do not look at each other

Are you a problem shopper? The answer is “Yes” , if you or someone else thinks that you sometimes get carried away with shopping .In other words ,do you or does someone else think you are occupied in extreme shopping ? If people have regrets later about their shopping , or have an “out-of-control” feeling about the quantities of what they buy or the amount of credit they use , they may be considered to problem shoppers.
Extreme shopping can lead to a more serious problem –addictive shopping . Addictive shoppers feel driven by the desire to shop and spend money . They experience great tension which drives them to shop and spend money and they feel a “rush” during the time they are occupied with the shopping activity.
Extreme or addictive shopping may result from long-time unpleasant feelings, of which anxiety ,pain and shame are common ones,. When we feel bad inside ,we often do something to make ourselves feel better . In this case ,we often go shopping .
A few people shop to relieve their boredom or emptiness .For some people ,the motivation is a desire for status ,power ,beauty or success .Some love to shop as it makes them feel valued in the eyes of the shop assistants .Others shop simply because it makes them forget , at least temporarily , tension ,fear or unhappiness in their life.
Besides ,shopping malls are designed to encourage continual shopping . For instance ,there are some malls where you can’t see clocks displaying the time because they don’t want you to become too aware of the time you spend there .What’s more ,food courts, coffee shops and restrooms are provided ,so you don’t have to leave the mall because of your physical needs.
Therefore ,once you become aware of how market forces work ,you will certainly come to control your shopping behavior .For example ,how much time you will spend and what areas you will visit can be decided before you enter the mall. Keep a written account of what items you will buy and how much money you will spend . Make a plan for what you are going to buy before you feel the urge to shop and then stick to it . That is vital for gaining self-control.

Moods, say the experts, are feelings that tend to become fixed, influencing one’s outlook for hours, days or even weeks. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry or simply lonely.
Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out; sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology (药理学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇静剂). What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug methods to set you loose from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being nonpoisonous. So next time you feel out of sorts, don’t head for the drug-store but try the following methods.
Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a bad mood. "If you could keep up the exercise, you’d be in high spirits," says. Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.
Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compare favourably to drugs as a mood raiser. Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise - running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and sustained activities that increase the heart rate, increase blood circulation and improve the body’s use of oxygen. Do some of the activities for at least 20 minutes a session three to five times a week.

The single, decisive factor that made it possible for mankind to settle in lasting communities (社区,聚居地) was agriculture. After farming was developed in the Middle East in about 6500 BC,people living in family units did not have to be on the move continually searching for food or hunting their animals.Once people could control the production of food and be assured of a reliable supply of it,their lives changed completely.
Farming was a revolutionary discovery. It not only made settlements possible and later the building of cities but it also made available a reliable food supply. With more food available, more people could be fed.Population therefore increased. The growing number of people available for more kinds of work led to the development of new social formations. With more and more food,a community could support a variety of workers who were not farmers.
Farming in the world over has always relied upon a dependable water supply. For the earliest societies this meant rivers and streams or regular rainfall. The first great civilizations grew up along rivers.Later communities were able to develop by taking advantage of the rainy seasons.
All of the ancient civilizations probably developed in much the same way,in spite of a few differences. As villages grew, the production of more numerous goods became possible.Cloth could be woven from wool.Houses made of wood, brick, and stone could be put up.
The science of mathematics was an early outgrowth of agriculture.People studied the movements of the moon, the sun,and the planets to work out seasons.By doing so they created the first calendars (日历).With a calendar it was possible to find out the arrival of each growing season.Measurement of land areas was necessary if field was to be divided accurately.Measurements of amounts, for example,of seeds or grains was also a factor in farming and housekeeping.Later measures of value as money exchange became common.
All of the major ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia,Egypt, the Indus Valley, and China appeared in the 4th millennium BC.Historians still argue over which one came into being first. It may well have been the Middle East. This place reaches out from the Nile River in Egypt northward along the coast of former Palestine, then eastward into Asia to include Mesopotamia. In this area people settled along the riverbanks and practiced field agriculture. This kind of farming depended on the reproduction of seed, normally from grain crops.

The classical study of family size and IQ was conducted in the Netherlands. It was based on the military(军事) examinations of more than 386,000 Dutchmen. Researchers found that the brightest subjects came from the smallest families and had few, if any, brothers and sisters when they were born. Thus the firstborn child in a family of two was usually brighter than the last child in a family.
The effects of family size on intelligence may be explained by what a house full of children does to the home environment. It increases the amount of time a child spends with other children and decreases the amount of parental attention he or she receives. For example, a parent with one restless child is likely to sit and play with the child. The same parent with two or three restless children is more likely to ask them to play with each other. Some psychologists say that when a child interacts(交往) with an adult alone, the child learns more and therefore intelligence is increased. Researchers have also found that parents often expect more from their first-born, which motivates such children to seek a higher standard.
Not all psychologists agree that firstborns tend to be more intelligent. They say that the data need to be examined more closely for other possible explanations. For example, in industrialized nations most large families come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Thus environment, not family size or birth order, may be influencing intelligence. On the other hand, there may be genetic variations(基因突变) within families that also explain the cause of differences.
If firstborns have advantages in the area of intelligence, research has also shown that they may be more conforming(墨守陈规) and have poorer social skills than their younger siblings (brothers and/or sisters). Although more research needs to be done in this area, it is clear that such factors as birth order, the order in which boys and girls are born into a family, the number of years that separate siblings probably have an effect on the development of intelligence, personality, and social relationships.
73. The underlined word "subjects" in the 1st paragraph means __________.
A. branches of knowledge B. persons chosen to be studied in experiments
C. citizens of a country D. things talked about in a conversation, discussion or book
74. Why are firstborns encouraged to seek a higher standard?
A. They are more likely to obey others.
B. Their parents spend less time with other children.
C. They are more conforming.
D. Their parents expect more from them.
75. The best title for this passage would be _________.
A. Family Size and IQ B. Boys Cleverer Than Girls?
C. The Development of Intelligence D. Factors Influencing IQ
