A
Good health is the most valuable thing in the world. When you’ve got it, you never think about it. When you haven’t got it, you think about it all the time. Our biggest enemies are not terrible diseases and so on. We are our own biggest enemies because we sometimes destroy our own good health. Some of us eat too much, drink too much and smoke too much. And though our reason tells us we should control ourselves, we find it difficult. The fact is that most human beings need stimulation (刺激). Who doesn’t enjoy a drink after a busy day? Only a smoker knows the pleasure of a cigarette with a cup of coffee.
The danger is when these innocent pleasures run our lives and so destroy our health. When you find yourself eating between meals or eating too much rich food, when you can only keep yourself going by taking frequent (频繁的) drinks or by smoking one cigarette after another, then it’s time to stop and think what you might be doing to yourself. The funny thing is that when we don’t control ourselves, simple pleasures are no longer simple pleasures.
All right, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying, “It’s easy to say, but I can’t help myself. I need that extra bit of food, that extra drink, that extra cigarette. Life has so many pleasures that I can’t do without them.” But I’m saying you can help yourself. Not only that, you must help yourself. Because if you don’t help yourself, no one else can. So be your own best friend.
36. The underlined word “innocent”(in Paragraph 2) means ________.
A. not having done something wrong B. exciting or cheering
C. not having much experience D. not expected to cause harm

38. “I can’t help myself” means ____________.
A. I can’t do it myself B. I must ask someone to help
C. I can’t control myself D. Do help me, please

Pennsylvania—When Connie Beck and her husband awoke to strange noises last weekend, they thought high winds were rattling (使……发出响声) their home.
What they found was even more unexpected: A deer was taking a bubble (泡沫) bath in their bathtub.
“I wasn’t exactly dressed for company,” Mrs. Beck said. “We were just waking up.”
The deer burst through the front door early on Saturday, ran past the couple’s bedroom and into the bathroom.
Somehow he managed to turn on the water in the bathtub and knock over a bottle of bubble bath into the bathtub. He then got himself into the bubbly water.
“You could hear the water running over the kicking,” Beck said.
The Becks called State Game Commission officials, who arrived with tranquilizers (镇静剂) and a lot of laughter.
“A guy said, ‘There’s nothing wrong… he’s just in there taking a bubble bath,’” Mrs. Beck said.
The animal was soon brought under control, removed from the house and released.
“He was unharmed except for a little cut above the eye,” said Mrs. Beck. “We were also fortunate. There wasn’t much damage, except for the front door, some marks on the tub, and a few hoof (蹄) prints on the floor.”

A. On the night of Friday. B. On the late night of Saturday.

American hunger for cheese was reduced(减少)a bit when consumers (消费者) traveled and ate less following the year of 2001. Now their appetite (胃口) is back and they are eating more cheese than ever.
Most of the demand is being fed by household suppliers, and California’s mega-dairies (大制酪场) are growing so fast that experts expect the state to overtake Wisconsin in cheese production within two years. California is already the nation’s leading milk producer, and with the help of cheese makers like Hilmar Cheese Company—the largest in North America—the state has doubled its cheese production in the last ten years.
In 1995, California made 70 varieties of cheese. Now there are 250 types of cheese coming out of the state. One in every 10 pounds of cheese eaten is a higher-quality, value-added cheese. Ten years ago, only one in 15 pounds of cheese eaten was a specialty. Most of it is common cheese, but Americans are also eating much more cheese.
It is good news for California’s dairies (牛奶场). By pooling their resources, farmers could turn some of the high-protein, high-fat milk coming from their brown cows into cheese, a value-added product that would bring in a little extra cash. When they started the Hilmar Cheese Company in 1984, the 12 families together brought in 250,000 pounds of milk a day—a drop in a bucket for a company that now processes (加工) 10 million pounds of milk a day from more than 270 producers—about 10 percent of all the milk produced in California.
Cheese has great healthful value, and brings calcium (钙) back into diets. But it also makes food taste better, making it easier to eat too much. “It’s terrible that we’re eating more cheese, but bottom line, all calories count,” said Stern, who also suggests people should try to eat cheese in different ways, with pears or apple slices—expanding their diets.
47. The passage is written to tell us _______.
A. dairies are developing very fast
B. Americans eat more cheese than ever
C. how dairies are developing in America
D. cheese is developing towards more varieties
48. When the Hilmar Cheese Company was opened, it _______.
A. was the largest company producing cheese B. made 70 varieties of cheese
C. was supplied with milk by 12 producers D. was made up of 12 families then
49. The underlined word “It” (in Paragraph 4) refers to the fact that ______.
A. Americans are eating more and more cheese
B. cheese has more varieties
C. cheese has great healthful value
D. California is the nation’s leading milk producer
50. In the opinion of Stern, ______.
A. the more we eat cheese, the better we’ll become
B. Americans are eating too much cheese
C. more ways of eating cheese should be developed
D. Americans should not eat cheese any longer

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural (复数) of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites(相反)? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
51. According to the passage ______.
A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things
B. there should be egg in an eggplant
C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
D. boxing rings should be round
52. Which of the following is the correct plural?
A. Beeth. B. Geese. C. Meese. D. Tooth.
53. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?
A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee.
C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.
54. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “______”.
A. blow B. roll up C. get hurt D. finish
55. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.
A. clever B. crazy C. lazy D. dull

I’m sorry that I can’t keep my promise that I’ll pay a visit to Beijing with you next weekend. My uncle is returning home from America, who is aged 70 years and in poor health. I have no choice but to meet him at the airport next weekend.
To be honest, Beijing is a most popular tourist attraction to me, Not only is it the political, economic and cultural centre of China, but it is also rich in beautiful scenic spots. Besides, I’ve been planning to accompany you on the trip to the beautiful city. I wonder if it is possible for us to go there the weekend after next, and if so, I’ll make more preparations for it and we’ll enjoy a more pleasant trip there.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
