Every Thursday night, he would head off to Shreveport, LA for an auction (拍卖会). Most of the time, I drove a car over there for him so he could sell it at the auction. One day I was riding with my dad when he noticed a hitch-hiker (搭便车的人) with a backpack. Without hesitation, he pulled the car over and offered him a ride. Dad asked him his name, and proceeded to talk to him about all sorts of things. Dad asked him where he was going. The hitch-hiker told him he was headed for the west. I can’t recall why but he told Dad a lot of things that had occurred to him that persuaded him to make that decision. He talked about the tragic events that occurred to him several years before. He was low in spirits, but I could see that the hitch-hiker’s attitude was changing as someone was really listening to him. We drove 45 minutes before the hitch-hiker got off. We pulled over and Dad told him to keep his head up and things would start looking up for him soon. He reached into his pocket and handed the hitch-hiker a twenty-dollar bill. The guy smiled. He nearly lit up right there on the cold, dark highway. We drove on and my dad did not say a single thing. I was still completely amazed by what I had just witnessed. I was always told by everyone never to pick up a hitch-hiker and yet my dad did it every single time he saw one. While reflecting upon that story I came to understand that just one single kind act could change someone’s life, and I am sure that my father’s deed made that poor man’s day.?56. Seen from space the earth is covered with a blue mantle. It is a planet on which the continents are dwarfed (相形见绌) by the ocean surrounding them and the vastness of the marine (海洋的) area. An astonishing 80 percent of all life on earth is to be found hidden beneath the waves and this vast global ocean drives the natural forces which keep life on our planet. The ocean provides necessary sources of protein, energy, minerals and other products and the rolling of the sea across the planet creates over half our oxygen, drives weather systems and natural flows of energy and nutrients around the world, transports water masses many times greater than all the rivers on land combined and keeps the earth suitable for living things to survive. Without the global ocean there would be no life on earth. It is seriously worrying, then, that we are damaging the ocean on a level that is unimaginable to most people. We now know that human activity can have a serious influence on the vital forces of our planet. We have fundamentally changed our global climate and are just beginning to understand the consequences of that. As yet largely unseen, but just as serious, are the influences we are having on the ocean. A healthy ocean has diverse ecosystems and strong and healthy habitats. The actual state of our ocean is a far cry from this natural state. A lot of pressure is being put directly and indirectly on ocean ecosystems by human activities.?Consequently ecosystems are breaking down as marine species are in danger of dying out and ocean habitats are being destroyed. With the decrease in their diversity, ocean ecosystems are losing their natural way of recovery.? We need to defend the ocean now more than ever, because climate change is having a potentially disasterous impact on the marine world.64. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?? A. What the ocean looks like.? B. What the ocean is made up of.? C. What live in the ocean.?? D. What functions the ocean has.65. According to the text, the ocean directly provides people with ____.? A. water forming rivers B. comfortable habitats C. all the natural forces they need D. driving forces for energy and nutrients66. It is not realized by many people that we have ____.? A. done great harm to the ocean???? B. benefited greatly from the ocean? C. fundamentally changed our global climate
D. begun to suffer the consequences of pollution??67. What situation does the ocean face?? A. A natural recovery to health.
B. An overpoplulation of sea creatures. C. Habitats becoming stronger and healthier.? D. The potentially disastrous impact of climate change. 68. The best title for this text would be ____.? A. Protecting Our Planet????? B. Defending Our Ocean? C. Getting to Know Our Planet?? D. Make Good Use of Our Ocean
D In offering Michael Jackson ticket holders the choice to take a refund (退款) or receive their unusable tickets as souvenirs, AEG has introduced music fans to one of the most difficult?problems in the mathematical sciences. The choice facing fans is analogous to the El Farol bar problem, which has been the subject of hundreds of academic papers and inspired a whole field: minority game theory. In this problem, there’s an interesting but small bar named El Farol. It is great fun on a Thursday night if less than 60 people turn up, but crowded and unpleasant if more than 60 people attend.? Suppose there are 100 people in the town — on a Thursday night do you go to the bar or not? If you reason that most people will stay away, you should go, but everyone else should reason in the same way and therefore it will be crowded. Once you’ve realised this, you should stay at home, but if everyone thinks like you, the bar will be empty and you’ll have missed out. In the same way, if nearly everybody takes the refund, the tickets, designed by the King of Pop himself, will become collectors’ items and worth a fortune. However, if all or most of the 750,000 fans take their tickets, they will only be worthless bits of fancy paper. However, there is one huge factor in the Michael Jackson problem which isn’t in the standard El Farol bar problem. Hype (炒作). If the owner of the El Farol bar announced it was going to be closed next week, you’d better stay at home. So my advice would be to read the newspapers and decide what to do on the basis of advice from experts. If all the articles you read say the tickets will be collectors’ items, ask for a refund, and if they all accuse AEG of trying to cheat crazy fans, take the ticket. It was, after all, designed by Michael Jackson.69. What does the underlined words “analogous to” in Para. 2 mean?? A. Similar to.?? ?B. Originating from.? C. As common as.? D. More difficult than.70. It can be inferred that “minority game theory” is a theory about ____. ? A. experts’ advice???? B. the management of bars? C. people’s reasoning??? D. the ideas of minorities71. If most of the fans decided to keep the tickets, ____.? A. the fans would still get a refund B. the tickets would increase in value C. the tickets would decrease in value
D. AEG would be accused of cheating them72. What does the writer advise ticket holders to do?? A. To advertise the tickets.?????? B. To do as newspapers advise. C. Not to collect the tickets. D. Not to do what most fans will do.??
EThe king was to pass by a beggar’s hut and the man was beside himself with excitement, not because he was about to see the king but because the king was known to part with expensive jewels and huge sums of money when moved by sympathy. He saw the king’s carriage coming just as a kind man was filling his begging bowl with uncooked rice. Pushing the man aside, he ran into the street, shouting praises of the king and the royal family. The carriage stopped and the king let the beggar come near. “ Who are you?” he asked. “One of the most unfortunate of your citizens,” said the beggar. “Poverty sits on my doorstep and follows me about like a dog. I haven’t eaten since yesterday afternoon!” “Do you have nothing for your king except a tale of sadness?” said the ruler, putting out his hand. “Give me something.” The beggar, astonished, carefully picked up five grains of rice from his bowl and laid them on the king’s outstretched palm. The king drove away. The beggar’s disappointment was great. He shouted and roared and swore again and again at the king’s meaness. Finally, his anger spent, he went on his rounds. When he returned home in the evening he found a bag of rice on the floor. “Some generous soul has been here,” he thought and took out a handful of rice from the bag. To his astonishment there was a small piece of gold in it. He realised then that the bag had been sent by the king. He emptied the rice on the floor, feeling sure there would be more gold pieces in it, and he was right. He found five, one for each grain of rice he had given the king. “It is not the king who has been greedy,” thought the man, sadly. “If I had been generous and given him the whole bowl of rice, I would have been a rich man.”73. The beggar became ____ when he knew the king was to pass by. ? A. frightened??? B. nervous??? ??C. angry????? ?D. overjoyed74. From the fact that the king demanded something of the beggar, it can be
inferred that the king was ____.? A. mean??????? B. unsympathetic ? C. testing the beggar?? D. making fun of the beggar75. Which of the following statements is RIGHT according to the last
paragarph?? A. The beggar planned to ask for more gold from the king.? B. The beggar regretted not having given the king more rice.? C. The beggar complained about not being given more gold.? D. The beggar wondered why the king hadn’t given more gold. 任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)

An Event of Imagination
The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.
On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the seabed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperature around the world falls to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs (恐龙) were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?

书面表达 (One possible version)The English listening test may be removed from the College Entrance Examination in our province. Students have different opinions about this. Some students think the cancellation of the listening test is a good idea as it is not a fair competition. Urban students usually do better in English listening than rural students because of their better learning conditions. What’s more, if the test is cancelled poor students will not have to spend money on listening materials and equipment. ?However, others think the cancellation will have some negative effects. For one thing, the other tests cannot test an examinee’s all-around English ability. The cancellation may also harm the students’ English ability because their time of listening to English in class may be restricted.?In my opinion, we should pay attention to a student’s all-round ability in a language. So if the listening test is cancelled, steps should be taken to ensure that students’ listening ability will not be harmed.
