When you buy a T-shirt, or a fur coat in a shop, it often carries a label telling who made it or from which shop it was bought. Indeed, some labels show the dress is famous and it is very expensive, so buyers secretly wish they might be carried forever. On the other hand ,buyers who deal with the cheapest products (产品)would be pleased to get rid of labels completely.
However, there is another label more important than the one (showing from which shop the dress was bought.) When a person buys a fur coat, or a jacket from a shop, a label telling what the product is made of should be carried to it.
This label is required by law. Besides telling what the product on show is made of, the label should be in clear English and be the truth.
The reason for this label is that most buyers today aren’t expert enough to know exactly what kind of fur or material they are buying. The buyer must believe in the store that sells the products or what the labels say.

Many things have happened throughout my life, but recently, I have noticed a change in me. After my junior year in high school, I got a job at Freeport Medical Center; in addition, I worked at New Rice Bow Restaurant two nights a week. I am in school while holding two jobs at the same time, which gives me a lot of responsibilities and takes up a large amount of time.
Working two jobs and staying in school is not exactly what I call fun. However, my heavy workload(工作负担) is worth the trouble because I am getting a lesson about responsibility from it. I work twenty-one hours per week.
This has changed me greatly, considering that I have understood the need to be organized and responsible. Having this knowledge has prepared me for college. All of these points are going to affect me in the future since I am expecting much more when I move out. Being independent means having more responsibilities, more than what I have now. At least now I have a feeling of what it is going to be like once I am out of my mother’s care. I will have to pay for my own rent, food, clothes and various necessary things.
I have to be a responsible person now in order to pass the tests of life. Hopefully, I will be able to depend upon myself without any help from others. Like everyone else, I want to flourish in the world, and find my meaning of life. In order to finish these tasks, I have to be responsible and be aware (意识,明白) of what I should do so that I can do them right.
54. According to the writer, holding two jobs while staying in school makes him ________.
A. earn enough money to pay for the tuition(学费) B. be able to move out of the family early
C. be aware of the importance of responsibility D. have fun out of it
55. According to the author’s opinion, a responsible person should be able to________.
A. master all kinds of living skills B. pass the various tests of life
C. do everything without others’ help D. do part-time jobs besides study
56. The underlined word “flourish” in the last paragraph probably means“________ ”.
A. to swing back and forth B. to live a good and happy life
C. to be responsible for one’s life D. to be aware of what one should do
57.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Learning to Balance Responsibilities
B. The Way to Give Attention to Study and Part-time Jobs
C. How to Live Well and Independently
D. Reasons that Affect People’s Future

My Aunt Edith was a widow(寡妇)of 50,working as a secretary, when doctors discovered what was then thought to be a very serious heart illness.
Aunt Edith didn’t accept defeat easily. She began studying medical reports in the library and found an article in a magazine about a well-known heart doctor, Michael DeBakey, of Houston, Texas. He had saved the life of someone with the same illness. The article said Dr.DeBakey’s fees were very high; Aunt Edith couldn’t possibly pay them. But could he tell her of someone whose fee she could pay?
So Aunt Edith wrote to him. She simply listed her reasons for wanting to live: her three children, who would be on their own in three or four more years, among them a little girl who always dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. There wasn’t a word of self-pity(自怜)---only warmth and humor and the joy of living. She mailed the letter, not really expecting an answer.
A few days later, my doorbell rang. Aunt Edith didn’t wait to come in; she stood in the hall and read aloud:
Your beautiful letter moved me very deeply. If you can come to Houston, there will be no
charge for either the hospital or the operation.
Signed: Michael DeBakey

I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1994 but I can remember my mother’s words as if it were yesterday. “Kerrel, I don’t want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him.”
AIDS wasn’t something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together any more and my dad lived alone .For a while , he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father’s other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look after him.
We couldn’t afford all the necessary medicine for him and because Dad was unable to work., I had no money for school supplies and often couldn’t even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost, the teacher’s words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.
I did not share my burden(负担)with anyone. I had seen people reacted (反应) to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside even though he was too weak to feed himself.
I had known that he was going to die but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret. I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless. I called a woman at the nonprofit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.
I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, never having spoken about AIDS to anyone. Even me, he didn’t want to call attention to AIDS. I do.
62. What does Kerrel tell us about her father?
A. he had stayed in the hospital since he fell ill
B. he depended on the nurses in his final days.
C. he worked hard to pay for his medicine.
D. he told no one about his disease.

A. Kerrel couldn’t understand her teacher
B. Kerrel had special difficulty in hearing
C. Kerrel was too troubled to be bent on the lesson.
D. Kerrel was too tired to hear her teacher’s words.
64. Why did Kerrel keep her father’s disease a secret?
A. She was afraid of being looked down upon
B. She thought it was shameful to have AIDS.
C. She found no one willing to listen to her.
D. She wanted to obey her mother
65. Why did Kerrel write the passage?
A. To tell people about the sufferings of her father.
B. To show how little people knew about AIDS.
C. To draw people’s attention to AIDS.
