object, person or concept, among other things, and unless

you recognize when an idiom is being used, you can easily

misunderstand what you read or hear spoken.
习语有很多特点,其中之一是它往往用许多词代表单一
的事物、人物或概念,除非你能识辨出习语的使用,否则
你很容易误解所读到的或听到的内容。unless 除非,如果不 引导条件状语从句,表示要改
变主句中已经存在的情况或结果,就得去做unless 从句
中所说的事或动作。unless 已含有否定的意思,所以从
句中不再用否定式,但译成中文往往含有否定词。
You won’t catch the bus unless you run.
你不跑就赶不上公共汽车了。
Unless sleep is adequate, no one feels like exercising.
睡眠不足,谁也不想运动。
知识拓展:unless 从句可用来表示一种意图,主句用将来
时,从句用一般时。
I won’t go unless it is fine tomorrow.
除非明天天晴,否则我就不去。
关键点拨:通常我们说unless 相当于if …not, 但是他们有
区别 (1) unless 不引导虚拟条件句, if …not 可以。
(2) unless 不用在估计的情况中,if …not 可以。quite a few 不少,相当多 与of …短语连用,表示在
一定范围内的 “相当多” 。
Quite a few of us were beginning to get worried.
我们中间有不少人开始担忧了。
Quite a few of my friends are vegetarians.
我朋友中不少人吃素。
特别提醒: 如果不强调在某范围内的“不少,相当多”,
可以不用of …。
There are quite a few students absent from class today.
今天班上有不少人缺席。 This means that since the Bible was translated into English

centuries ago, many Hebrew or Greek idioms have become

part of the English language.
这意味着自数百年前?圣经?被翻译成英文以来,许多希伯
来习语和希腊习语已成为英语的一部分了。Biblical idioms originally had straightforward and clear
meanings because they were often meant to underline the

moral of a story and to give audiences an image to help

them understand the story better.
?圣经?习语原本都有着直白、清晰的意义,因为它们通常
意在强调某一故事的寓言,给听众或读者一个意象以帮
他们更好地理解故事。 3. underline vt. 清楚说明,强调
In his speech he underlined several points.
他在讲话中强调了几点。
This accident underlines the need for greater care.
这次事故清楚说明需要更加小心。

划线
Read the passage in five minutes and underline the difficult
sentences .
在5分钟内将读完这篇文章,在难句下划线。 Today, we use this idiom to mean that there is a hidden
weakness in somebody whom we admire or respect .
今天这个习语的意思是,那些为人敬重的人物也有着不为
人知的弱点。 This idiom comes from a passage in the Bible that says,

a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath

wings shall tell the matter.
这个习语来自于?圣经?中这样的一段话:“空中的鸟,必
传扬这声音;有翅膀的,必述说这件事。”It comes from a story in the Bible, where a son returned to

his family after being gone for a very long time.
这个习语来自于?圣经?中关于一个儿子离家很久后回到
家的故事。4. after + v-ing 在干了……之后 作时间状语。after 也
可以引导时间状语从句。
I’ll go and see her on Friday after getting the new dress.
= I’ll go and see her on Friday after I get the new dress.
(主从句中的主语重复,并不是很好)
等我买好新衣服后,在星期去去找她。
After working together for many years, they fell in love
with each other.
他们在一起工作多年以后,相爱了。5. related to … “有关的”, 是后置定语修饰things。
related to …也可以作表语,表示静态关系。
There is lots of work related to the party.
与聚会有关的工作很多。 (做后置定语)
Their language was related to Hebrew.
他们的语言和希伯来语有关系。 ( 表语 )For instance, children are often referred to as the ‘ apple

of their parents’ eye’, meaning that their parents love
them very much and are very proud of them.
例如,孩子们常常被说成是 ‘ apple of their parents’ eye’,
意思是他们的父母非常爱他们,以他们为荣。5. be referred to as … ……被称为…… 这是一个被动
结构,主语是被称呼的对象, as 后是被称为的名字。
He is referred to as “ Jesus, son of Mary”.
他被成为玛丽之子耶稣。
These two countries were referred to as the“ superpowers”.
这两个国家被称为“超级大国”。Studying them can help improve your comprehension, and

by learning enough important idioms, you can develop a

high level of competence in your communication skills.
学习他们可以帮助你提高理解能力,还有,通过学习足够
数量的重要习语,你能将交际技巧提升到较高水平。When you have a thorough understanding of English
idioms and their origins, you can better understand and

appreciate the history and cultures of English-speaking

countries because idioms are carriers of history and
culture.
透彻了解英语习语及其起源,你可以更好地理解和欣赏英
语国家的历史和文化,因为习语是历史和文化的载体。
