There are some key words or phrases that you might use for different options or possibilities.Skills building 1: listening for options and possibilitiesnot popularboringtraditionalwantpracticalnot good atStep 1:
taking notes about options and possibilitiesListen to two conversations between two good friends about choosing possible courses to study at university and take notes. (Fill in the table on page 58)Listening text 1:Hi, what course do you think you will choose to study?
I don’t know. It’s such a difficult choice to make.
Well, one thing I’m sure of is that I don’t want to study Mathematics. I’m not very good Student 1:Student 1:Student 2:at it. I don’t want to do Chemistry either as I’m always afraid that one of my experiments will blow up the laboratory! Lots of my friends say that Physics is a popular course right now, but I really want to study something that’s interesting and new. It’s a tough decision. I thought about doing something related to arts, but actually it proved very difficult for me. I think I’ll study something involving languages, though, as I’m quite good at them. A few years ago, you could only study Chinese or choose from a few foreign languages, but now there are many more choices!Student 2:I certainly won’t be taking Geography—I always get the locations of cities wrong. I’ve been thinking that I might do something like Journalism because I’ve published a few articles in the school magazine. Do you remember when the local newspaper published my writing last year?Yes. It was a really good article. I think that would be great for you, and Journalism sounds like a very exciting course to study. (school bell ringing)
Oh, that’s the bell. Let’s talk about this again at lunchtime.Student 2:Student 1:Listening text 2:Student 2:Student 1:Hey! Have you decided upon your course yet?
Not yet. What about you? I know you were a bit doubtful about taking a few courses because you said you want to study something you find interesting and exciting. However, I was talking to a friend of mine, and she told me about a new course called Bioengineering. It sounds interesting. There are also courses like Computer Engineering that might interest you. Maybe you could study that at university since you’re great at solving problems with computers.Student 1:Yes, I think Computer Engineering sounds interesting. I also want to do something practical that will interest me, and I think Bioengineering will be good for my future career. There are so many different courses, and I just want to find the right one that suits my personality. As for computers, yes, I do like working with them, so Information Technology or IT could also be a possibility.Student 2:These courses are very popular right now, and lots of people are choosing them. I think Journalism is one popular course that could be a good choice for me. It certainly appeals to my love of writing; I suppose a good way to find out more about them is to do some research on the Internet. What do you think?Student 1:We could also look in the newspaper. At this time of year, there are often articles detailing the different courses that we can study at university.1. Mathematics
