It was the first time in a year and a half that I’d seen the night face to face.
Only then did we decide to answer violence with violence.
I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself.
To be honest,I doubt whether I’m making any difference to the boy’s lives at all. I’ve discovered I possess a large number of different talents and skills that I never would have thought were within me had it not been for my being open to trying new opportunities.
I’ve discovered
I never would have thought作插入语。
had it not been for my being open to trying new opportunities. thatwere within meI neverwould have thought had it
not been for my being open to trying new
opportunities.2009全国卷II. I’ve discovered I possess a large number of different talents and skills that I never would have thought were within me had it not been for my being open to trying new opportunities.
以Book1 Unit1为例: … but your friend can not go until he/she finishes cleaning his/her bicycle.
“It is/was not until+被强调的部分+that ...”
“Not until ... did (does, do, is ...)+主语 ...”
While walking the dog, you were careless and it got loose and was hit by a car.
while walking the dog= while (you were) walking the dog。
I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature.
此句中的it’s ...that是强调句型。
I don't want to set down a series of facts in a diary as most people do ...
⑤引导比较状语从句 it was the first time in a year and a half that I'd seen the night face to face ...
“it is + the first/second time+ that ... have done”
“it was +the first/second time+ that ...had done”

Henry‘s short stories are well known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings, which are often referred to as "O. Henry ending." O. Henry’s stories are playful and optimistic. Most of O. Henry's stories are set in his own time, the early years of the 20th century. The latest time-saving device to come from the Land of the Rising Sun is a dog-washing machine. Dog lovers can now add a new item to their list of household goods. Scientists have made life easier for pet owners with their automatic washing machine. People can save time by putting their pooch in the machine and then 33 minutes later, out comes a clean, fresh-smelling dog. The process includes a shampoo, rinse and blow dry. Dog-Washer Cleans Pets and Saves Cash Sales of the dog-washer are increasing as the craze catches on. The machines save a lot of money for pet owners in cleaning bills. Countries Vote on Sale of Ivory Countries around the world are meeting in Doha this week to discuss a one-time sale of ivory. Tanzania and Zambia want to sell the stockpiles of ivory they have built up over the past few decades. They have as much as 90,000 kilograms of elephant tusks. Neighbouring Kenya is against any relaxing of the ban on the ivory trade. It says such action could increase the illegal trade, which would be a serious threat to elephant numbers. The Kenyan Wildlife Service's Patrick Omandi said: “We totally believe that any experiments to allow partial lifting of (the) international ban in ivory trade stimulates elephant poaching… Indeed there has been an increase in poaching across the entire continent, with some countries losing their entire population.”

The government will do everything in its power to stimulate economic growth.
Most of the world’s Internet users believe Internet access is a basic human right. This is according to a new poll conducted for the BBC. A survey of more than 27,000 adults in 26 different countries found four out of five people believed access to the World Wide Web was a right everyone in the world needs and should have. The chief of the International Telecommunication Union, Dr. Hamadoun Toure, told the BBC World Service: "The right to communicate cannot be ignored. The Internet is the most powerful potential source of enlightenment ever created." Dr. Toure believesInternet Access is A Human rightonline access should be available everywhere, just like roads and water. In some countries, this has already happened. Finland and Estonia have laws saying access is a human right.
Only two men in the company have access to the secret records.

The survey also showed how the Internet is quickly becoming a vital part of our life, all across the world. Almost everything we do in our life today, from communication, study, work and leisure, needs the Internet. Without access to the Web, many people would feel helpless and powerless. Almost 80 per cent of those who took the survey believe the Web had a positive impact, with nearly four fifths saying they have greater freedom. Other people were worried about the dangers of using the Internet. One big surprise was that the majority of Germans felt it was not safe for them to express their opinions online. (2010.3.9) The human nose has a new role – as a secret weapon in the fight against terrorism. British scientists have worked out that our noses may be a better way of identifying people than fingerprints. Dr Adrian Evans of the University of Bath, who conducted the research, said scanning noses will be an important tool in the battle against crime, illegal immigration and terrorism. The new system works by photographing the nose from different angles using a software programme called PhotoFace. Noses to Be Used In Fight Against TerrorismThis analyzes the shape of the nose and where it fits on the face. It places the image into one of six basic nose shapes shared by all humans, such as Roman, Greek, Hawk, and Snub. (2010.3.3)
a) This society still makes women unable to enjoy equal rights.
b) Women are still denied equal rights.
表达“越来越”,不要只用more and more。
a) More and more teenagers smoke cigarettes in recent years.
b) Teenage smoking is on the rise in recent years.
a) Most college students take a positive attitude towards part-time jobs.
b) The large percentage of college population take a positive attitude towards part-time jobs.
a) Many people think birth control is quite necessary in China.
b) It is widely (commonly) thought that birth control is quite necessary in China.
a) We may think more of the elderly who live apart from their children.
b) More thoughts may be given to the elderly who live apart from their children.
a) If we don’t recognize the serious problem of growing population, we will make a big mistake.
b) Failure to recognize the seriousness of growing population will lead to a big mistake.
a) Whenever you pick up a newspaper, you will always find advertisements. b) It is impossible to pick up a newspaper without finding advertisements.
