Step 1 Lead-in
Have the students listen to a colour song and ask:
Do you like this song?
Then say: This is the colour song. As we all know, we are living in a colourful world. Can you tell the following colours?
2. Show the students a picture of colours. Put them in pairs and ask them to discuss the following questions:
1) What is your favorite colour?
2) Why do you like it?
3) Why do different people have different ideas about the same colour?
4) Why do Chinese people like using the colour red on many important traditional occasions?
Let the students know that the colour red on our national flag represents revolution, blood and lives of revolutionary martyrs.
Encourage students to talk about their own experiences and express their ideas freely.
3. Show a picture of masks in Chinese opera:
Say: The colour you like can show your personality.
Ask the students to match the three masks with the characters Zhangfei, Caocao and Guanyu. Then get the students to discuss and analyze their personality.

Colours have different meanings in different cultures around the world. Different countries are associated with different colours.
Show the title of the passage: Roses are red, violets are blue, but which of the two really suits you?
1. Reading while listening
Ask the students to read the magazine article quickly while listening to its recording and then divide the passage into several parts.
Then ask: 1) How many parts can you divide the passage into?
2) And what is the main idea of each part?
2. Careful reading
Ask the students to read the passage again and answer the following questions:
1) What does the colour red mean in China, the USA and South Africa?
2) Why did women wear yellow ribbons on blouse collars or sleeves in the USA and the UK decades ago?
3) What is green always associated with?
4) What does “in the black” mean?
5) What kind of people is white usually associated with?
3. Taking notes
Ask the students to read the passage carefully and fill out a form with what they have read, using No More Than three words for each blank.
Give students 10 minutes and then ask two students to write their answers on the blackboard. Then check the answers with the whole class.
Step 3 Guessing game
Put the students into two groups to have a competition - guessing the meanings of the following colour idioms.
1. They had to close down their factory because they were always in the red.
