Celebrate the Good Days
It was in April of what seemed to be a great year. I was in fourth grade with the greatest teacher, Miss De Rosear — the coolest teacher.
I had just come home from school to find Mom at home. That was 31 because she never arrived home before me. Mom was sitting on the sofa with Dad. A thousand terrible things started flashing through my mind. What if Grandma had
passed away? I did not have the 32 to say goodbye. What if my brother was hurt? As I crawled (爬) up on the sofa next to Mom, she gave me a kiss and a huge smile, so I 33 and went on with my normal after-school activities. During the TV show
that I always watched after school, Mom started getting phone calls. The calls continued for the rest of the night. Each time the 34 rang, Mom rushed to her room. I then knew that something bad had happened.
When Mom came back, I asked, ―Mom, why do you keep on 35 the room every time you get a phone call?‖
She turned to my sister and me and said, ―Girls, I have something to tell you. I have cancer (癌症).‖
As she said that I felt a sharp pain in my heart. I was thinking, ―Why is God taking my mom from me so soon? What have I done?‖ I didn’t know that we were just beginning a very long, 36 journey.
The next day on the bus I turned to my friend, Kate. ―My mom…‖ That was all I could say before I started crying. Kate gave me a big hug and said 37 , ―I know, and I’m here for you.‖ I knew that Kate would support me.
During the summer, Mom stayed home. On the good days, sister and I talked about what we were going to do next day, week, month, or year with 38 . We never talked about losing her.
We got 39 from many different people. When school started again, Mom had to have surgery (手术). I stayed with one of my teachers, Mrs. Stephens. Mrs. Stephens made me rainbow French toast. She was always there for me with a smile, a
hug, or ―it will be okay‖ advice.
On April 5, my mom became a five-year survivor (幸存者). When that day came, we had a big party. Friends came from far and wide to celebrate how 40 Mom is and her success against cancer!
There will be good days and bad days — some more bad than good. But as I have learned from my mother, celebrate the good days!

Brothers
Long ago, there was a rich man who had two sons. The older brother, who was called Nolbu, was greedy (贪婪的) and lazy. However, his younger brother Hungbu was hard-working and kind-hearted. When their father died, Nolbu inherited (继承) his house and land, but Hungbu received nothing.
One day when Hungbu was working in the fields, he found a bird which had broken its leg. He took the bird home and looked after it carefully. The bird gradually became stronger, and when summer came, it flew away to a warm place. A year later
the bird flew back and gave Hungbu a seed (种子). Hungbu sowed (播种) the seed and
it soon grew into a plant which produced many gourds (葫芦). When Hungbu opened one of the gourds, he was amazed to see that it was full of treasure. He wanted to use the treasure to do something useful. The next day he bought a big house and moved there with his family.
When Nolbu heard about his brother’s good luck, he was very jealous (妒忌的)
and decided to do the same as his brother. He also found a bird, but he broke its leg
and looked after it until it became strong. The bird also gave him a seed, which produced several gourds. However, when Nolbu opened one of the gourds, goblins (小 妖精) quickly came out of it and stole all his money. After that Nolbu went to his brother to ask for help. Hungbu was sorry for him and so he invited him to share his house. Both brothers and their families lived happily ever after.

A habit is a usual practice. Everyday activities become habits for most people. For example, Mark wakes up every morning and reads his newspaper with a cup of coffee. People in different countries have different cultures. Cultures have certain habits as well. In North America there are many habits which are different from those
in other countries. The way we eat is one example. An American might eat toast (烤面 包) or eggs for breakfast, but in Asia people might eat rice and soup for breakfast.
If someone’s habit troubles you, it is called a pet peeve (不能忍受的事). A pet peeve can be considered rude by another. Cross-culturally you’ll find many different pet peeves. Spitting (吐痰) on the street or bumping into (碰到) someone without
saying ―excuse me‖ might be considered rude. Wearing improper clothes or saying something at the wrong time can also be a pet peeve.
In the United State it is rude to cut in line, which means to step ahead of someone who has been waiting longer than you. Americans will generally form a line if more than two people are waiting. There seems to be an unwritten rule of first come, first served, which gives order to large groups. When traveling to a foreign country, it is a good idea to find out which habits may be considered pet peeves by the native people. When in Rome do as the Romans do is another expression that reminds us to follow the customs or habits of the local people.
According to the passage, the way we eat shows .
our eating habits are changing
habits can trouble our daily life
we must eat healthy food every day
different cultures have different habits
What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A survey about pet peeves.
Ways to change pet peeves.
Punishment for pet peeves.
Examples about pet peeves.
According to the passage, when we visit a new place, .
we need to buy some gifts for the best friends
we should follow the habits of the people there
the local people can help you to find out good ideas
the local people can serve us our favorite food and drinks
D
Your Hamburger Is Killing the Planet
A life decided to eat fruits and greens or one in which you enjoy juicy steak (牛排) and hamburgers, which do you prefer?
It is not a question of culture, it is not even a question of killing animals. Even a carrot dies when pulled out of the ground. It is a matter of the protection of the planet
because our meat eating habits might be stressing (给……压力) our ecological (生态
的) system.
It’s no longer ―might‖, we are destroying our planet.
Most of the meat that we eat comes from livestock, which is about 23 billion in population and causes the waste of our natural resources. Every second of every day one football field size rainforest is destroyed, and much of it is used to farm and raise livestock.
Raising the animals also requires huge quantities (量) of water, mostly to grow
the grains (谷物) fed to them. It takes over 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, which can be used for a seven-minute shower every day for a minimums (最小量) of four months. Take your pick: four months without a shower or a hamburger.
Meat has to be cut, cleaned and processed. One doesn’t just buy a cow and start eating it. According to David Pimentel from Cornell University, it takes 20 times more energy to produce beef than tofu, and both have the same good sources of protein (蛋 白质).
The waste from the animals is one of the main causes of water and air pollution. The animal waste cannot be used in the fields because it can spread diseases to humans. In 1995, 25 million gallons of animal waste flowed into the New River in North Carolina, killing 10 million fish and destroying 364,000 acres of coastal (沿海 的) wetlands.
Animal farming also produces larger quantities of greenhouse (温室) gases, such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). If your next Christmas is unusually hot or especially cold, blame the steak you ate the night before.
I am not saying that everybody needs to stop eating meat right this minute. I don’t think we can produce enough corns, fruits, and vegetables. I am just saying we need to
cut our meat consumption (消费), 70 grams per day is okay if we want normal weather,
clean air and drinking water.
According to the passage, our meat eating habits are a question of .
showing the culture B. killing the animals
C. harming the plants D. protecting the planet
What does the word ―livestock‖ in Paragraph 4 probably mean .
the animals we feed B. the farm growing the grains
C. the supermarket near us D. the factory producing meat
From the passage, we can learn that .
animal waste should be used for planting
we’re destroying the farm to raise animals
animal farming produces greenhouse gases
we use the same energy to produce beef and tofu
According to the passage, the writer thinks we should .
try our best to eat less meat every day
only eat steak for our health next Christmas
eat less vegetables for the clean air and water
feed animals instead of planting enough plants
七、阅读短文,根据短文内容,从短文后的五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳 选项。每个选项只能用一次。(共 10 分,每小题 2 分)

Television is one of the greatest technological inventions of the 20th century. A Scottish man called John Logie Baird invented it. Inventors in the USA and Europe were working on electronic television systems but Baird used a mechanical (机械的)
system. In 1925, he was able to send the first black and white picture – of the head of a doll – from one end of his flat to the other. He then used a local office boy, not the doll, and this teenager was the first person ever to appear on TV.
In January 1926, Baird invited scientists to his flat and showed them his invention. He called it a ―televisor‖. Later that year Baird started the world’s first TV station and gave it the name 2TV. In 1927, he sent images 730 kilometres from London to
Glasgow using telephone cables (电缆). A year later, his company sent the first
transatlantic (大西洋彼岸的) TV images from London to New York. Baird made the first television programmes for the BBC in 1929. These programmes had sound, not just pictures.
However, Baird’s system was very limited and basic (基本的). A totally electronic
system was more popular and practical. The inventor of this electronic system was an American, Philo Farnsworth. In 1936, the BBC started using Farnsworth’s system because the picture was better than Baird’s.
More and more people had televisions after the Second World War. Colour TV began in the USA in the 1940s but only a small number of people had colour
televisions in their houses. They were very expensive. In Britain and the USA, the first regular (有规律的) colour TV programmes only began in 1967.
Now in the 21st century, we have digital television. TV has changed a lot since the face of a boy appeared on TV in John Logie Baird’s flat!
Is television a great technological invention of the 20th century?
How far were the images sent from London to Glasgow in 1927?
Who invented the totally electronic system?
When did colour televisions go into their houses in America?
What is the passage mainly about?

There are different kinds of memory. Our short-term memory stores things we
have only just heard or learned. Such as repeating a few words or sentences. Young people and middle aged people hardly ever have problems with this, but old people often lose some of their short-term memory skills.
Our medium-term memory stores things a little deeper in our minds and the things are usually events from a little further back in the past, for example from a few days, weeks or months ago.
Finally, our long-term memory stores things from the past that is far away. These things are stored in the deepest part of our minds. We can often only bring the most memory events from our long-term memory. Research shows that long-term memory takes time to develop. For example, if the students want to study and develop the language skills, they need several weeks.
