Thanksgiving a traditional American festival, which has something to do with celebrating the first harvest after the settlers from the Europe went to live in the USA.Presents In the west, it is considered rude not to open a present when someone is given one. The westerners would like to see the person’s reaction. We Chinese just do the opposite. However, there exist differences when people attend weddings. In the UK, the guests are supposed to give their presents to the newly-weds, while in Italy, the newly-weds are expected to give their guests presents as a souvenir to remember the big day. In China, people usually sit together to have a huge banquet to celebrate weddings. But guests have to sit separately in Brunei. Food and soft drinks are served, but no alcohol. Step III Writing
Western festivals gain increasing popularity in China. A growing number of people in China are absorbed in the thrilling atmosphere of celebrating Christmas. In comparison with the Spring Festival, the equally high status is given to Christmas by some of them.
There are a variety of factors contributing to this trend. First, younger age groups are exposed to western culture and lifestyles through learning English. And festivals are regarded as the highlight of western culture.
Second, the development of economy enables Chinese people to possess increased purchasing power. They are targeted by businessmen, who view foreign festivals as golden opportunities to make money. So they desperately try to boost the atmosphere of foreign festivals.
The necessity of celebrating these foreign festivals is widely questioned. People involved are to blame for their loose traditional values. Our native festivals play crucial roles in Chinese traditional culture. However, their foreign counterparts are having strong influence on people's values and thoughts. There is no doubt that we should give our priority to Chinese traditional festivals.
