Read Your Cat’s Body Language—Know Your Pet More
Have you ever thought that your cat is an aloof(冷漠的) creature to you? Then it is because you do not understand it. Your cat is always trying to communicate to you through its gestures and body language. So to know your cat more, you need to know more about the cat’s body language.
The tail is the most important part of your cat’s body; it often shows its mood and intention. If your cat is sweeping its tail in broad gestures, then it means annoyance or impatience at your extreme petting(抚摸). If you continue to hug the cat might give you a “bat” with its paws. A rapid sweeping of tail back and forth, right from the center shows an extreme anxiety in your cat. If you find your cat turning its body fully sideways and extending its tail upwards, then be sure that your cat is giving a sign of a conflict with the fellow cats. Often you will find your cat lowering its tail between her legs, which show her complete obedience(顺从的). A raised tail also indicates that your cat wants to be friendly.
Along with the tail, the cat’s body gestures speak volumes about its mood and behavior. While bent legs is a sign of defending itself, outstretched legs will show self-confidence and self-assurance. If the cat’s ears are back and the body low, it will show its shame or regret; raised ears will show interest in the happenings around it. If you find your cat with the head completely lowered then it will show that it is boredom and disappointed.
36. Your cat is impatient with your petting when it is ________
A. raising its tail B. lowering its tail between her legs
C. sweeping its tail in broad gestures D. extending its tail upwards

A. it will show that your cat is boredom and disappointed
B. it means that your cat is feeling disappointed
C. something around is drawing its attention
D. you may see a fight between cats very soon
39. What does the third paragraph tell us?
A. Importance of tail movement. B. Movement of other body parts.
C. Movement of ears. D. Movement of legs.

LONDON(Reuters)—A French woman who had the world’s first partial(部分的) face transplant has spoken of her surprise at seeing her new appearance, the Daily Mail newspaper said on Saturday.
The 38-year-old woman underwent(接受) the operation to give her a new nose, chin and mouth at a hospital in the northern French city of Amiens last month.
“When I looked at my new face, I knew straight away that it was me,” the paper quoted the woman, who was disfigured(毁容) after her dog injured her badly, as saying. “It was simply amazing to see a nose and mouth on my face.”
The woman, who is recovering in a hospital in Lyon, told the paper that the attack of the dog had left her so disfigured that she had been forced to wear a dental mask.
People in the street would recoil from her in horror, she said, and even one of her own two daughters found her appearance unbearable. “Old people were the worst, they used to stop and stare at me all the time,” she said. “My elder daughter Lucie just didn’t want to see me—I had to wear a mask. If I didn’t she refused to see me.”
Earlier this week the woman asked journalists to respect her privacy after her operation attracted the media.

Shanghai, China, is home to the world’s tallest woman. Yao Defen, a 36-year-old woman, suffers from a brain tumor(肿瘤) which is believed to be the reason behind her huge height and size. Defen stands at 7.75 feet tall, which is 2 inches more than Sandy Allen of the United States, who is listed as the world’s tallest woman in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Defen’s brain tumor is located in a gland(腺) of the brain that regulates the outlet of growth hormones(荷尔蒙). Because of her tumor, her body was forced to let out an excess(过量) of growth hormones, which lead to her extreme height. This excess of growth hormones has made many of her bones weak and brittle, making it hard for this 36-year-old woman to sit or stand.
Defen’s family are poor farmers living in eastern China. And after the story of her extreme height tumor was broadcasted internationally by the Discovery Channel, many doctors in China were willing to award Defen free treatment for her illness. She is now reportedly taking medicine to stop the gland from producing more growth hormones, so she won’t continue to grow.
Doctors expect that after her treatment and surgery Defen will shrink 30%. This shrinkage will ease the osteoporosis, a disease that makes bones in the body weak and more likely to break, which will hopefully allow Defen to lead a more normal life.
44. From the passage, we learn that ______.
A. Defen’s family has difficulty in paying her treatment
B. Defen has suffered from a brain tumor for 36 years
C. Defen is the tallest woman in the Guinness Book of World Records
D. Defen’s bones have already broken quite a few times
45. According to the passage, which is the best thing that Defen should do to live a normal life?
A. Harden her bones. B. Repeatedly take medicine.
C. Lie in bed all day. D. Have an operation to remove the brain tumor.
46. The underlined word “shrink” in the last paragraph probably means ______.
A. draw together B. reduce in size
C. move back D. stop growing
47. The best title of the passage is “______”.
A. Cure for Head Brain Tumor B. Patient Survives from Osteoporosis
C. Treatment for World’s Tallest Woman D. Excess of Growth Hormones

Adrian’s “Amazing Race” started early when his parents realized that he, as a baby, couldn’t hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired (听觉受损的), he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. If you are asked to chair a meeting, remember the following six golden rules for meeting management.
1. Always start the meeting on time
If you begin on time, group members who show up late will realize the value of time. Beginning on time reflects the skill as an effective time manager and sets an example for others to follow.
2. Select a note-taker or arrange to have the meeting audio-taped
You may need to refer back to an issue that was discussed during the meeting at a later date. Good record-keeping is a sign of a good meeting manager as well.
3. Learn to listen
So many times we think we are going to say and, in the process, block out important points that other group members may be contributing. Additionally, we often hear only what we want to hear, rather than really listen to other people. Meetings that are characterized by effective listening are successful meetings.
4. Keep the discussion on track
Many times important issues can get sidetracked in a meeting, especially when everyone has a different opinion about the topic. If an unexpected conflict develops once the meeting is in progress, either appoint a subcommittee to look into the problem, or ask the participants involved in the conflict to meet with you after the meeting. Doing so will help keep the discussion on track and minimize (减少) the chances of wasting participants’ time of great value.
5. Give everyone an opportunity to be heard
Some people tend to control meetings, whereas others wait to be asked their opinions. As the leader of the meeting, you need to keep an open mind and make sure everyone feels welcome to contribute and express ideas without criticism.
6. End on time
If you said the meeting would last no longer than one hour, make sure the meeting lasts for only one hour. Running late with a meeting makes members late for other appointments, increases the chances that the members will mentally leave the meeting and reduces your reliability as an effective meeting manager.

In today’s world, almost everyone knows that air pollution and water pollution are harmful to people’s health. However, not all the persons know that noise is also a kind of pollution, and that is harmful to human health, too.
People who work and live under noisy conditions usually become deaf. Today, however, scientists believe that 10 percent of workers in Britain are being deafened by the noise where they work. Many of the workers who print newspapers and books, and who weave(织) cloth become deaf. Quite a few people living near airports also become deaf. Recently it was discovered that many teenagers in America could hear no better than 65-year-old persons, for these young people like to listen to pop music and most of pop music is a kind of noise. Besides, noise produced by jet planes or machines will make people’s life difficult and unpleasant, or even make people ill or even drive them mad.
It is said that a continuous noise of over 85 decibels(分贝) can cause deafness. Now the governments in many countries have made laws to control noise and make it less than 85 decibels.
In China, the government is trying to solve not only air and water pollution problems but also noise pollution problems.
56. The passage is mainly about ______ .
A. air pollution B. water pollution C. noise pollution D. world pollution
57. According to the passage, a continuous noise of ____decibels can make people deaf.
A. less than 85 B. less than 65 C. about 65 D. more than 85 58. 10 percent of the workers in Britain are being deafened because _______ .

C. they live near airports D. they are too busy to listen to others’ talk

Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed tragically. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair to the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?
Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interest. But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance(遗传), conflicts would be sure to arise if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success also depends upon fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of the parents simply because of bad luck?
Every child should be wanted for itself, as an individual. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person, a parent is deliberately(深思熟虑地) specifying(详细说明) the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the U.S., much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish. So I suggest there is a greater need to consider the interests of the child and to reject these proposed uses of cloning.
60. What happens to parents in cloning a lost child?
A. Parents expect too much from the copy. B. Parents may get a quite different copy.
C. Parents are sure to have an identical copy. D. Parents lose the talents of the lost child.
61. What, in the author’s opinion, affects the success of parents’ dreams?
A. The cloned child’s interest in Einstein. B. The cloned child’s natural talent.
C. The cloned child’s personality. D. The efforts of the parents.
62. In the third paragraph, the author implies that ______.
A. the cloned child is viewed as independent
B. the right of growing in his own way is taken away from the cloned child
C. parents carefully protect the rights of the cloned child
D. parents are eager to wish the cloned child to be somebody.
63. In this passage, the author is mainly concerned about ______.
A. the future of a cloned child B. the possibility of cloning people
C. the importance of cloning a lost child D. the problems of cloning life

Ten is not just a number. For Hong Kong, it means change. That change began 10 years ago on July 1, 1997, when Hong Kong was returned to the mainland. A year later, putonghua became a major subject in middle schools there. Street chatter now is trilingual: Cantonese, English and putonghua.
But language is just one of the many changes. Over the past 10 years, the flow of people has left its mark, especially on the young people.
The first sign is in the job market. Before 2006, about 10,000 young professionals from the mainland found jobs in Hong kong. At the same time, around 240,000 Hong Kong residents had worked or were working on the mainland. More than 60 percent of them were aged 23 to 25, according to official statistics.
Geng Chun, 26, a native of northern China, managed to start his own IT business after completing his university degree in Hong Kong three years ago.
“I like Hong Kong,” Geng said. “Hong Kong needs us. We’re young, well-educated and energetic.”
Education is the next thing to change. After the return, more people from both the mainland and Hong Kong began crossing the border to get an education.
According to China’s Ministry of Education, in 2006, 914 Hong Kong students were admitted to mainland universities. In all, 7060 studied in the mainland that year. Before that time, Hong Kong students were rarely seen in mainland schools.
There was a growth on the other side as well. In the early 1990s, about 100 mainland students went to Hong Kong every year to study. Last year, 1300 studied in Hong Kong universities.
Besides social and cultural changes in Hong Kong, business exchanges between the mainland and Hong Kong have greatly increased.
According to a Xinhua report, by the end of 2006, the mainland’s total investment in Hong Kong had reached $40 billion since 1997, which makes up 57 percent of all investments to places outside the mainland.
“We have many clients from the mainland, and actually, they are becoming our biggest group of clients,” said Ho, a manager for a Hong Kong PR company. “The mainland has provided our company with more business opportunities, which are vital for our development.”

Municipal(市政府) regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45 miles) east of Sao Paulo, have gone far beyond that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity.
There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”, he claims.
A 2003 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped because 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered a preservation area.
Biritiba Mirim, a town of 28,000 inhabitants(居民), not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job, nor am I healthy. And now they say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarildo do Prado, an unemployed resident said.
The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos, an assistant to the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts”. However, it does not say what the punishment will be.
64. What is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim?
A. Ban on smoking in public places. B. Ban on parking in certain zones.
C. Prohibiting residents from dying early. D. Forbidding buried grounds in preservation.
65. What can we infer from the phrase “have gone far beyond that”?
A. Officials in Biritiba Mirim have nothing of these regulations.
B. The bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected.
C. Officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world.
D. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town.
66. What’s the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations?
A. He objects to them. B. He gives strong backing to them.
C. He asks the residents for advice on them. D. He remains silent about them.
67. Which of the following is TRUE according to the article?
A. The mayor of the town wants to build a new cemetery against federal regulation.
B. The residents of the town sing the praises of the bill.
C. The government is going to change the environmental decree.
D. No better resolution of the problem has been thought out.

A San Francisco self-service laundry(自助洗衣店) may be one of the world’s most unusual places to surf the Internet but a fashionable club on Moscow’s Red Square is definitely the most fashionable, according to a Yahoo survey of the globe’s best cybercafés(网吧).
The winners of the first Yahoo Mail Internet Café Awards were published on Wednesday to mark the 10th anniversary(纪念日) of the world’s first cybercafé in London’s West End.
Among the top picks were the unusual Brain Wash in San Francisco, named as “the height of Internet café with self-service laundry” and Moscow’s Phlegmatic Dog, selected as Most Stylish with its “unique combination of comfort and hi-tech”. Taking the Best UK Internet Café award was Café Curve in Brighton, southern England—“a must for anyone who likes style, comfort, typing and keeping in touch”. And the title of the world’s Most Remote Internet Café went to an internationally funded centre in Timbuktu, Mali.
The winners were chosen by a team of judges who considered travelers’ more than 1,000 nominations(提名) of cybercafés in 111 countries. The results have been collected in a Rough Guides e-book.
In the decade since London’s Café Cyberia first opened its doors in 1994, approximately 20,000 Internet cafés have sprung up in 171 countries, according to Yahoo Mail.
“Despite the fact that home and work Internet access is now commonplace, Internet cafés fulfill the same role as they did 10 years ago,” Eva Pascoe, a co-founder of Café Cyberia, said in a statement. “They are the post offices of the wired generation.”

Life is what you make it. The choices you make influence what happens to you in life. I never really brought into that idea, but I didn’t even have a choice when my mom announced I was going to a summer camp. Everything I’d heard about camp had to do with bugs, poison ivy, and bad food. Mom insisted, however, since she thought it would benefit me to learn more about the world around me.
When I got to the camp, I didn’t see anything I wanted to learn more about, and after four days I was ready to scream.
During free time one day, I wandered down a lonely path into the woods and sat against a tree. Then I saw one of the camp counselors(辅导员) approached me.
“Hey,” he said, “mind if I have a seat?” I shrugged. I wasn’t going to encourage, but I couldn’t exactly stop him either. He sat down and said, “I’m Gary, and you’re Erica, right?” I nodded. “It seems that you’re not having a good time,” he began.
I crossed my arms. “Look,” I said, “I didn’t want to come to camp. I’m not having fun.” I glared at Gary.
“So there’s nothing here at all for you, huh?” he asked.
“Nothing.” I answered.
“Let me show you something,” said Gary. He got up, and I followed him along the path until I heard a sound like a roaring train.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“Wait and see,” he replied, with a smile.
When we rounded the corner, I couldn’t believe what I saw. There was the biggest waterfall I could ever imagine, right in front of me. I could feel my eyes getting bigger and a smile tugging at my mouth.
56. Which word best describes Gary, the counselor?
A. Creative B. Caring C. Attractive. D. Cold-hearted.
57. It can be inferred from the passage that _________________.

D. most kids didn’t know much about nature

NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing (释放) chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out. They are not sure to what degree people’s memories are affected.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war.
They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change people’s memories and
changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

Traditionally, many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why? Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a recent medical report offers some different advice. Experts suggest people should obey their bodies; they should drink as much water as they feel like drinking. The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The report is from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies. This organization provides scientific and technical advice to the government and the public. The report contains some general suggestions. The experts say women should get about two-point-seven liters of water daily. Men should get about three-point-seven liters. But wait—in each case that is more than eight glasses. There is one important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water content in foods.
As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they do hard labor. The same is true of those who live in the hot climate. Depending on heat and activity, people could need two times as much water as others do.

Every city in the world has taxis to take tourists to interesting places. London is the only city in the world where taking a taxi is an interesting experience for tourists. This is partly because of the special black cabs(出租车), which are found in no other country. But it is also because of the drivers themselves. While British people are famous for being polite and reserved, London taxi drivers are well known of their willingness to talk.
Some customers say that once the door shuts and the cab moves off they are captive audience. It is impossible to get the taxi drivers to stop talking.
“They’re self-confident and free thinking,” says Malcolm Linskey, the author of a history of taxi drivers in London. “They answer to nobody but themselves and that comes across in their conversation.”
They are also expensive. London has the most expensive taxis of any city in the world except Tokyo. That’s why Ken Living-stone, the mayor of London, is planning to make taxi drivers discuss their fares with customers before they take a ride.
Drivers agree that their fares are expensive. That’s because their black taxis cost more than other cars, they say. And the customer is also paying for a more driving expertise than anywhere else in the world.
Before someone can qualify as a London taxi driver, that person has to pass a test known as “The Knowledge”. This involves memorizing the name and location of every street within six miles of a point in the exact center of London. The trainee must also learn the exact location of every important building within these streets. Finally he or she must be able to use this knowledge to work out the shortest distance between any two destinations within this area.
It can take up the three years to pass “The knowledge”. Every day it is possible to see trainee taxi drivers on the streets of London, taking careful notes of popular destinations before finding the route to their next stop. Cab driving is a job often handed down in families. Many taxi drivers take their children out in their spare time to memorize routes they will need to know when it is their turn to do “The Knowledge”.
The effect of this is to make London taxi drivers experts at their job. They also have bigger brains. Recent research by scientists at the Institute of Neurology in London found that the hippocampus—the part of the brain that remembers things—was larger and more developed in cab drivers. They have to fit the whole of London into their heads, so their brains grow bigger.

An unhealthy obsession (着迷)with celebrity(名人) culture is damaging the study success of British students, a survey of teachers found last Friday, with celebrity couple the Beckhams their favorite. Many students are dropping their study to seek the chance of fame instead, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) survey found. .Almost two-thirds of teachers said sports stars were the type of celebrity most pupils wanted to copy while more than half of students wanted to be pop stars.

"We are not surprised about infiltration(渗透) of celebrity culture in schools" the teacher Mary Boust said in a statement. "Celebrities can have a positive effect on students. They can raise students' desires and ambitions for the future.
