Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last.
And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly stops. The writer must sit at his desk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing. You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort is, the more effective the writing is, and the more the rewarding is.
There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe(抄写员) to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service of that rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing.
But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves. We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. It would be difficult to count the number of such words: messages, letters, and reports put into mails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expects, or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into some “letters-to-be-read” files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.

A. to earn our living??????????????????????? B. to attract others to readC. to do daily reports easily????????????? D. to become good secretaries
59. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to _______.
A. comment and blame???????????????????? B. introduce and describeC. explain and persuade??????????????????? D. interest and inform

A few days ago, Daniel bought six packages of ink for his printer. Then he found a deal on better ink at the local computer store, So Daniel went back to the $1 Store to exchange the ink for some other items.
He put the ink into a plastic bag and tied it up. When he entered the store, he immediately showed the bag to a clerk(店员) and told her that he was returning some items, but she was obviously very busy. Then without thinking much, Daniel put the bag into a cart and started shopping.
He was making his way through the crowd when a female employee suddenly shouted to stop him. He was told not to be allowed to carry a plastic bag of items around in the store and his bag should be checked.
Daniel was astonished. There was no need for her to shout. He opened the bag and showed her the receipt. “I’m returning these to exchange for some other items,” Daniel said.
“You should learn how to follow store rules. Leave this bag here with the clerk. You can have it back when you check out. ”
Daniel was embarrassed and did as told to. He felt like a thief. By the time Daniel had finished shopping and exchanged the items, he was angry. He went looking for her. He wanted an apology. He found her finally and asked what her name was. She screamed at him again, “Ursula!” and stormed away.
When Daniel got home, he called the store’s headquarter(总部). He described his unpleasant experience. A customer service representative responded, “We will not stand such behavior. Give me your phone number and I will call you back. ”
Two days later, Daniel received a phone call from the representative, “I’m sorry.” She said, “but there’s no one at that store named Ursula. Can you describe her? I’ll find out who she is. We do not stand rude behavior, nor do we stand lying to customers.”

IMMIGRATION is all about finding a new balance. While some people are pushed to quickly assimilate(被同化), others are pulled to maintain their own culture. How much you choose to assimilate can decide who you are, and how you are seen, in a new society.
Some immigrants reject the need to change. For example, my Dad always tries to compare New Zealand to China. He constantly tries to prove to us that China is better. Home is a “Chinese-only” zone. All our food is bought from the Chinese supermarket. My father never goes to the doctor but instead relies on traditional Chinese medicine.
However, some of my friends seem to be happy to have left their past behind. They dye their hair and stop speaking their mother tongue. They all eat, dress and behave just like Kiwis. To me, their so-called “new life” is a betrayal.
These extreme examples result from the confusion that occurs when a person first settles in a new country.
When the older generation moved to a foreign country, they experienced a new culture overlapping(与…相交错) their old one. They feared losing their own identity so much that they held tightly to their roots and never let go. In addition, faced with a new language, immigrants always find it easier to express ideas in their mother tongue. It’s natural they should end up spending time with people who understand them the most, who come from their native country.
The younger generation doesn’t have as much to lose as their parents and grandparents. Pressure from their age group forces them to change. If you want to make new friends, you have to speak their language. The longer you spend with your new friends, the less you follow the customs of your homeland. Young people quickly adapt to a new culture.
64. This passage is mainly about _______.
A. immigrants’ hard struggle for survival in a new country
B. two different attitudes towards a new culture among immigrants
C. the fierce competition between immigrants and the natives
D. immigrants’ confusion about their identity and children
65. We can infer from the above passage that_______.
A. cultural shock is a common problem for most immigrants
B. immigrants are mostly disappointed in a new country
C. forgetting one’s own culture is popular among immigrants
D. China is a better home place than most other countries
66.The main idea of the last paragraph can be best summarized as follows:_______
A.It is much easier for the younger generation to lose their culture.
B.The living pressure is much bigger for the younger generation than for their parents.
C.It is not likely for the younger immigrants to assimilate.
D.It is much easier for the younger immigrants to change.
67. The underlined sentence most probably means_______.
A. immigration is necessary for the balance of cultures in the worldB. immigration helps to bring two generations closerC. the main advantage of the immigration is to get some new things from the new cultureD. immigration is all about adaptation to a new culture
D
For years we have been told that encouraging a child’s self-respect is important to his or her success in life. But child experts are now learning that too much praise can lead to the opposite effect. Praise-aholic kids who expect it at every thing may become teens who only accept being praised and refuse disapproval from others.
Social psychologist Carrol Dweck, PhD, tested the effects of overpraise on 400 fifth graders while she was at Columbia University. She found that kids praised for “trying hard” did better on tests and were more likely to take on difficult assignments than those praised for being “smart”.
“Praising results or abilities makes a false promise that success will come to you because you have that quality, and it devalues effort, so children are afraid to take on challenges,” says Dweck, now at Stanford University, “They should be praised for their efforts.”
68. The underlined words “Praise-aholic kids” refers to kids who are ______.
A. very proud of being praised B. worthy of being praised
C. extremely fond of being praised D. tired of being praised
69. The author quoted (引用) Dr. Dweck’s words in the last paragraph in order to make the article _______.
A. better-known B. better-organized C. more persuasive D. more interesting
70. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. praise for efforts should be more encouraged
B. praise for results works better than praise for efforts
C. praising a child’s achievements benefits his or her success in life
D. praising a child’s abilities encourages him or her to take on challenges

Frederick M. Hess is the director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, which is a nonprofit organization that conducts research on many public topics. He says that a long summer vacation is not reasonable in today’s world.
Can American students afford to take a summer vacation? In a summer vacation, millions of children spend valuable time sending messages, watching TV, playing video games and doing shopping in the mall. They will also be putting their academic futures at risk.
Summer vacation once made sense in the past when you didn’t need an education to get a good job. But now things have changed. For today’s students, academic skills are important to students’ future success, but such skills are affected in the summertime. Many nations don’t give children an American-style summer vacation. They offer no more than seven consecutive(连续的)weeks of vacation. Most American school districts offer up to thirteen weeks. To compete in the global marketplace, Americans must be prepared to go up against international competitors.
Summer vacation also causes challenges for today’s families. In the 1960s, more than 60% of families had a stay-at-home Mom. Now, two-thirds of American children live in households where every adult works. For these families, summer vacation can be more burden than break. Someone must watch the kids.
But the biggest problem may be how summer vacation hurts academic achievement. Researchers have found that disadvantaged students lose important ground in the summertime.
A longer school year does not have to be an invitation to hard boring work. Rather, it should allow time-pressed teachers to conduct richer and more imaginative lessons. Schools would have more time to devote to athletics, languages, music and the arts. Summer vacation can be a great thing. But in the 21st century, it may also be outdated.

Every student will be faced with the question after he passes the college entrance examinations: Should we choose a good major(专业) or a good university first?
录音原文
(Text 1) M: Gardening's too much like hard work for me. If I have time to spare, I like to play tennis or go for long country walks. W: Well, I think of gardening as play, not as work. I'm never as happy as when I’m busy in the garden.
(Text 2) W: When is our plane to take off? M: At half past five. W: Oh dear! That only leaves us 15 minutes to go through customs and check our baggage.
(Text 3) W: What a hot day! Do you always have weather like this in May? M: Generally it's much better than this. And I can't remember when we had such a rainy day.
(Text 4) W: To teach those students English, do you have to speak their language quite well? M: No. quite the contrary. They benefit most when the class is organized entirely in the foreign language.
(Text 5) W: Americans tend to think from the particular and small to the general and large. M: For example? W: We've just seen an example of this in the fact that they progress from personal and local matters to the state and finally the nation — not the other way around.
(Text 6) M: This machine drives me mad. W: How come? M: Well, most of the time, it's fine. I rent a movie and I put it in and press ON. But the other day, I wanted to program it, like, to record a show. So, I read the directions. And I followed them exactly, you know, step by step, but then, nothing. It didn't record. W: Is there anything wrong with the machine? M: With the machine? No. There’s something wrong with me. I’m no good with, like, electronic equipment.
(Text 7) W: How do you like living in the country? M: To be honest, I never really appreciated the city until I moved away. Country living is terribly inconvenient. W: What do you dislike most about it? M: I can't stand getting up early. In order to get to work on time, I have to leave the house at 7:00. W: Do you drive or take the train? M: I drive, and what I don’t like about it is all the traffic. W: You always see the bad side of things. Isn’t there anything you find attractive? M: Don't pay any attention to me. Sometimes I'm critical of things even though I know they are good for me. W: Being away from the city must be nice on weekends. You have a chance to get a lot of exercise, don’t you? M: Yes, one of my pastimes is golf and now I can play frequently. I've improved, too. I guess I shouldn't be so quick to criticize living in the country.
(Text 8) M: What can we do for you today? W: Uh, hi. Yes, I'm having a problem with my car. It doesn’t seem to be running right. M: Let me take a look ... OK, start her up. (Engine starting ...) OK, OK. Shut her off. Hmmm. Sounds like a fuel line. W: So how much is it going to cost? M: If it's a fuel line, that'll be ... $200 for the pre-screening check, $150 for parts, and $75 an hour for labor. Oh yeah. Today's a holiday, so labor is actually $50 more per hour. W: Huh? Those prices are so high, and what holiday is it today? M: Oh, it's the local pumpkin festival. W: I can’t believe this. It’ll cost an arm and a leg to get my car fixed. M: Oh, we’ll take care of it. Just bring the car back on Tuesday. W: Why not today? It’s only 11:00 a.m.! M: Urn, we close at 11:30 a.m. on holidays, and we're closed tomorrow and Sunday, and we 're closed the following day as well. W: I can’t wait that long!
(Text 9)
W: Hello, Mr. Reynolds. I'm from the local newspaper. May I speak to you for a moment? M: Of course. W: I thought you might have some interesting stories to tell about your travels in North Africa. M: I'm sorry to say that I did the things any ordinary tourist would do. W: Oh, I see. I guess there’s not much to write about then. M: I don't think so. Unless you believe that waking up with a snake in your bed is of any interest. Of course, there was also the time when I was caught in a dust storm and wandered in the desert for three days before being found. W: There, I knew it! I knew you'd have some interesting tales, just like an action adventure movie! M: Well, I certainly wouldn't go that far. But if you'd still like to write about me, why don’t you come by after class? I'll see what I can come up with for you. W: Wonderful! I'll bring my recorder and a notebook.
(Text 10) M: Good morning, and I'd like to welcome all of you to the University of North Carolina . This is the oldest public university in the United States, and we are proud to say that we offer one of the best public education opportunities anywhere in the nation. The school started in 1792, and has been open ever since, with the exception of having been closed for two years in the 1860s because so many young men left to fight in the Civil War. Following the war, the university opened its doors again and has been open ever since. In this century, the student number has been increasing rapidly, including women and small groups. Now we are looking forward to a bright future where students from all backgrounds attend this university. Thank you.

One possible version:
Every student will be faced with the question when he passes the college entrance examinations: Should we choose a good major or a good university first?
Some students prefer to consider majors first so that they can learn what they are interested in. It will also make it possible for them to take their favorite jobs in the future.
However, those who think differently believe that the environment is important to one’s development and that graduates from leading universities are often more likely to find a good job.
In my opinion, the best choice is a good major at a good university. If we cannot obtain both, the first thing to consider is a good major, because no matter where we study, we can still achieve a lot in a certain field if we try our best.
