Ss are expected to gain some information about ancient civilizations, to practise and improve their reading comprehension. The Reading strategy in this unit teaches Ss how to read diary entries according to key words. Ss are expected not only to master this strategy but apply it to their future English study as well. A number of beautiful images and photos are displayed directly on the screen. Students will have a deep impression on the related people and things. It can also help to create a relaxed and active atmosphere in the classroom.As we all know, students don't know much about the history of civilizations and related words, so, Maybe it is difficult for them to understand this passage.五、教学过程StepII、ReadingReading2. Scanning (6 minutes)3. Careful reading (10 minutes)1. Skimming (4 minutes)This is designed to practise one of the reading strategies: According to the diary dates, place names, students can have fast access to related information. This is designed to practise one of the reading strategies: How to read historical documents？Students should pay attention to what happened and historical facts in the passage. By reading the text carefully, students have a better understanding and master the details of the text so that students understand the main idea and the implied meaning of the text. Ex.1 Read the text in English Weekly and finish the form using the words in the passage.五、教学过程StepIII、PracticeEx.2 Read another passage in English Weekly and answer the questions in English.(10 minutes)Organize students into small groups of four or allow them to form their own groups. Assign one of the questions to each group. Ask students to have a discussion with their partners. Encourage students to share their opinions and report their answers to the class.五、教学过程StepIV、Discussion1. What caused the city of Loulan to disappear? 2. What caused the sandstorms? 3. How can we avoid such tragedy happening again?

After reading, the students have a good understanding of reading diary entries. Different exercises also contribute to a better understanding of the passage. At the same time, reading two short passages helps students learn more about the background information of Pompeii and Loulan. After the discussion, Ss think it important and necessary to protect cultural heritage and environment. What’s more, the Ss’ ability of reading comprehension has also been developed as well, That will be of great help for their future English study. Teaching in this lesson works well.
