I began to work as a salesgirl in a department store.I got there that morning and was introduced to all the salesmen and saleswomen.Throughout the day,one of the salesmen talked with me.I thought we might become friends. That evening after work we went out for dinner. We sat together and talked, but our numbers were never exchanged.
Around 10 p.m.I began my 2 hour drive back. For the first part of the drive I was thinking to myself how stupid I had been for not giving him my number. Then all of a sudden, when I had gone around a corner I was completely over in another lane. There was no time to even hit the brakes.I hit at once. The police came and cut the top of my car off to get me out. They sent me to the hospital quickly.
My mother got there late that night, and saw me lying in the emergency room. The next morning, mom called the manager and told him what had happened and that I would be in the hospital for a long time.A few hours later,I received a phone call—it was the guy I hadn’t given my number.Well,he came to visit me that night and the next night. We spent a lot of time together.
It was months before I would be walking and driving again, but he’d sit by me.I don’t think I could have pulled through it without him.Now I can walk freely, and just this week we are planning on getting married one year after the day we met. It’s just amazing how a tragedy like a car accident could bring about such a wonderful relationship!

Plants have family values, too. It seems, with new research suggesting they can recognize close relatives in order to work together.Susan Dudley and Amanda File of McMaster University in Ontario,Canada, report they have demonstrated for the first time that plants can recognize their kin (亲属).
Plants from the same species of wildflower grew aggressively alongside unrelated neighbors but were less competitive when they shared soil with their siblings (同胞),the study found. This North American species, named sea rocket, showed more vigorous root growth when planted in pots with strangers than when raised with relatives of its kind.In addition to restraining root growth, such plants may also develop different stem lengths in the presence of siblings.
This is an example of kin selection,a behavior common in aninals in which closely related individuals take a group approach to succeeding in their environment, the researchers said.Kin selection also applies to competition, the scientists added, because if family members compete less with each other, the group will do better overall.
“Everywhere you look, plants are growing right up next to other plants,” Dudley said, pointing out that usually it’s a case of each plant for itself.“But sometimes those plants are related, and there are benefits to not wasting resources on being competitive.”
How the plants determine which of their neighbors are siblings remains a mystery,Dudley said.Learning and memory appear to be important for kin recognition in animals, but this isn’t an option for plants, she noted. Some researchers speculate (推测) that plants communicate through their roots, identifying themselves using tiny chemical signatures specific to each plant’s family.
The new study may have important implications (影响) for agriculture,Dudley added, since competition between plants can reduce crop yields. Planting more cooperative siblings together instead of strangers could theoretically mean better harvests.
5.What’s the main idea of this passage
A.Plants can recognize and communicate with their relatives.
B.Plants can be as clever as animals.
C.Study finds a good way to increase crop yields.
D.Study proves competition exists between plants.

C.showed kindness among siblings
D.needed a competitive environment

A.exciting B.limiting
C.counting D.keeping
8.Which of the following is NOT true of kin selection
A.It is also found in the case of sea rocket.
B.It usually helps animals adapt to their environment.
C.It reduces competition between family members.
D.It is a common competition in the animal world.
He lay in bed,awake.再如:Her husband came back,drunk.
2.C to one’s surprise令某人吃惊的是;in surprise吃惊地。
4.D 根据“as/so+形容词+a/an+名词+as”结构,可排除A、B两项;当名词为不可数名词或复数名词时,不能使用so,可排除C项。
5.A now and then意为“不时,时而”,符合句意。here and there到处,处处,more or less或多或少,sooner or later迟早。
7.C be set in以……
8.A 本题考查it作形式宾语的用法,真正的宾语是后面的不定式短语“to finish the work in such a short time”。
9.D she played in the film是宾语从句,修饰role,构成短语play a role in sth.
10.C come out意为“出版”,符合句意。come about产生, come across偶然遇见, come over过来。
13.B care about关心,顾虑,在乎,care for喜欢,想要,照顾,take care小心,当心,take care of照料,照顾。
14.B make sb.do sth.,但用在被动语态中应为sb.be made to do;marry是及物动词,后直接跟宾语,即marry sb.。
由第三段第一句中的“...kin selection,a behavior common in animal...”
