the given reading material.
2. Write a passage about your problems of
friendship. Objectives:
By the end of the session, most students will be better able to acquire the required information and understand the target reading material. This will be achieved by:
Teaching students to apply the reading strategy—making predictions from the picture, the title and the key words.
Asking students to have some extension activities: multiple choices, a true or false exercise a summary and a discussion.
Learning and teaching focus:
Making predictions:
Predicting what the passage is about from the title,
Predicting what will the writer write next from the key words,
Predicting the main idea from the picture.
Anticipated difficulties:
The new words and some expressions might obstruct students from understanding the key facts of the reading appropriately so that students might draw inappropriate conclusions and fail to understand the reading material.
Students will probably find it difficult to predict from the picture, the title and the topic sentence so that they will feel frustrated.
Solutions:
Lead students to read some key information around the new words and ask them to guess the meaning according to the context.
Show students some key information to help them predict.
Teaching aids:
PPT, two additional reading materials and a notebook which will help to collect students’ answers and mistakes.

Stages
Activities
Reasons
Warming up
1. Greet students to lead in the reading lesson— making predictions— asking students to guess my age from my appearance and clothing. Then ask them to predict what will happen to me from my age.
1. Predicting the outcome or something else from students’ experiences in life is also a kind of prediction, although it is not one of the reading strategies I will teach them. Predict the things in their life will be easy which can interest them and give them some courage to go on with the lesson.

3. Open the first magazine—The Baby Magazine. Take out an English magazine and open to the column page to teach Ss the word “column”. Then show them the title of the passage on page 1 and lead in the second reading strategy—predict the kinds of passages from the title. There are different types of texts like advice, advertisements, stories and news.
4. Show another two titles of passages in the magazine to get students to practice using the second reading strategy.
5. Conclude the second reading strategy.
6. Show the travel magazine and get students to predict what kinds of texts they are from the title given.

Then show students the first part of the passage and get them to predict what the writing is going to tell us next from the key words like and, also, so that. There is a prediction with the help of the key words like and, also, so that... They will tell the things on the same side.
8. Show a second passage “Safari Park in Shanghai” There is a prediction with the help of the key words like however, but. They will tell the things on a different side.
