At the 43 of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to 44 what happened when they told someone they loved them.I fully expected one of the 45 to volunteer, as was usually the 46 , but on this evening one of the men raised his hand.He appeared quite moved and a bit 47 .As he unfolded out of his chair, he began by saying, “Dennis.I was quite 48 with you last week when you gave us the assignment.I didn’t feel that I had 49 to say those words to and 50 , who were you to tell me to do something that personal? One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about inventions. The grandson asked his grandfather about the computer age and other inventions.
The grandpa replied, “Well, let me think for a minute… I was born before television, penicillin, frozen foods, Xerox machines, contact lenses and Frisbees. There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens.
Man had not invented air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon.
Time-sharing meant a time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends — not purchasing condominiums. We had never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, or guys wearing earrings.”
If you saw anything with ‘Made in Japan’— or any other countries on it, it was junk. The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam.Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and instant coffee were unheard of.
In my day, ‘coke’ was a general cold drink(not the name of Coca Cola); ‘pot’ was something your mother cooked in(not a drug), and ‘rock music’ was your grandmother’s lullaby(摇篮曲)(not a kind of popular music).‘Aids’ were helpers in the high official’s office(not a deadly disease);‘chip’ meant a piece of wood(not a part of a computer);‘hardware’ was found in a hardware(五金器具)store, and ‘software’ wasn’t even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.
No wonder people call us old and think we are confused and say there is a generation gap, and how old do you think I am?”

So you thought the hamburger was the world’s most popular fast food? After all.McDonald’s Golden Arches are found everywhere in the world. But no,there is another truly universal fast food, the best fast food. It’s easy to make, easy to serve, much more varied than the hamburger ,can be eaten with the hands, and it's delivered to your front door or served in fancy restaurants. It has been one of America’s favorite foods for over 50 years. It is,of course, the pizza.
It’s kind of silly to talk about the moment when pizza was “invented”.It gradually developed over the years, but one thing is for certain—it has been around for a very long time. The idea of using pieces of flat, round bread as plates came from the Greeks. They called them “plakuntos” and ate them with various simple toppings such as oil, garlic, onions, and herbs. The Romans enjoyed eating something similar and called it “picea”.By about 1000 A.D in the city of Naples,“picea” had become “pizza” and people were experimenting with more toppings:cheese, ham, anchovies, and finally the tomato, brought to Italy from Mexico and Peru in the sixteenth century.Naples became the pizza Capital of the world. In 1889,King Umberto I and Queen Margherita heard about pizza and asked to try it.They invited pizza maker,Raffele Esposito,to make it for them.He decided to make the pizza like the Italian flag,so he used red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese, and green basil leaves. The Queen loved it and the new pizza was named “Pizza Margherita” in her honor.
Pizza migrated to America with the Italians at the end of the nineteenth century. The first pizzeria in the United States was opened in 1905 at 53 Spring Street,New York City, by Gennaro Lombardi. But the popularity of pizza really exploded when American soldiers returned from Italy after World War II and talked excitedly about “that great Italian dish”.Americans are now the greatest producers and consumers of pizza in the world.

D.There is a picture of a Pizza Margherita on the flag.
61.Which one is the correct timeline of the development of pizza?
A.pizza→ plakuntos→ picea B.picea→ plakuntos→ pizza
C.plakuntos→ picea→ pizza D.plakuntos→ pizza→ picea
62.Why are Mexico and Peru important in the development of pizza?
A.Because pizza was invented in these countries.
B.Because pizza first became popular in these two countries.
C.Because the people there are the greatest consumers of pizza in the world.
D.Because one kind of toppings was brought to Italy from these countries.
63.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Different kinds of pizza. B.The popularity of pizza in US.
C.The history of pizza. D.The ways to make pizza.

If U.S.software companies don't pay more attention to quality, they could kiss their business good-bye.Both India and Brazil are developing a world-class software industry.Their weapon is quality and one of their jobs is to attract the top U.S.quality specialists whose voices are not listened to in their country.
Already, of the world's 12 software houses that have earned the highest rating in the world, seven are in India. That's largely because they have used new methods rejected by American software specialists. For example, for decades, quality specialists, W.Edwards Deming and J.M.Juran had urged U.S.software companies to change their attitudes to quality. But their quality call mainly fell on deaf ears in the U.S -- but not in Japan.By the 1970s and 1980s, Japan was grabbing market share with better, cheaper products. They used Deming's and Juran's ideas to bring down the cost of good quality to as little as 5% of total production costs. In U.S.factories, the cost of quality then was 10 times as high: 50%.In software, it still is.
Watts S.Humphrey spent 27 years at IBM heading up software production and then quality assurance. But his advice was seldom paid attention to.He retired from IBM in 1986.In 1987, he worked out a system for assessing(evaluating)and improving software quality. It has proved its value time and again. For example, in 1990 the cost of quality at Raytheon Electronics Systems was almost 60% of total software production costs. It fell to 15% in 1996 and has since further dropped to below 10%.
Like Deming and Juran, Humphrey seems to be winning more praises overseas than at home. The Indian government and several companies have just founded the Watts Humphrey Software Quality Institute at the Software Technology Park in Chennai, India.Let's hope that U.S.lead in software will not be eaten up by its quality problems.
64.What country has more highest-rating companies in the world than any other country has?
A.India. B.The US.
C.Brazil. D.Germany.
65.Which of the following statements about Humphrey is true?
A.He is now still an IBM employer.
B.He has worked for IBM for 37 years.
C.India honors him highly.
D.The US pays much attention to his quality advice.
66.By what means did Japan grab its large market share by the 1970s and the 1980s?
A.Its advertising was most successful.
B.Its products were cheaper in price and better in quality.
C.The US hardware industry was lagging behind.
D.Japan hired a lot of Indian software specialists.
67.What is the writer worrying about?
A.Many US software specialists are working for Japan.
B.The quality problem has become a worldwide problem.
C.India and Japan are joining hands to compete with the US.
D.The US will no longer be the first software player in the world.

In the past 100 years Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S.minority.As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming.Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S.with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college.Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework.Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian Culture that promotes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they form a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social separation.Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.

Bye for now.

Back to the news.Last Friday a storm hit two villages destroying fourteen houses.Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows. One person was killed, and nine were badly injured and taken to the hospital.A number of other people received small injuries.Altogether over two hundred were left homeless as a result of the storm.
A farmer said the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour.He was in the kitchen with his wife and his children when they heard a loud noise.A few minutes later their house fell down on top of them.
They managed to climb out but then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe but very frightened.
A woman said that her husband had just left for work when she noticed that her house was shaking. She rushed outside immediately with her children.
There was no time for her to take anything.A few minutes later, the roof came down. Soldiers went to the area to help the people in trouble.
