Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and“Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins.Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns.
The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts.Instead,Americans try to teach their children toⅡ1ink for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities.Students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials libraries, statistics and computers.Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives.Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts.
This is America’s answer to the searching question that thoughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in the fast-moving time:“How Can one prepare today’s child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand?”

The United States is not the only country affected by the“computer revolution”,All the major countries of the world have computers ,and the developing countries have also realized that computers play a big part in their economic development.
Usually what one sees is a machine that looks like a typewriter ;it is called a computer terminal(终端)But computers are also used in unseen ways For example they determine how much tine there should be between traffic signals to prevent traffic problems and to keep millions of cars moving in an orderly flow When you buy a car ,a factory process that is controlled by a computer enables you to obtain a car with your own choice of colours and special features in just a few weeks’ time In medical laboratories ,com-puters have reduced the mistakes in testing ,and they have saved doctors’ countless hours of work Before long ,medical histories of all Americans will be kept in computer “banks”.If a person becomes ill far from his home ,local doctors will be able to get his medical record immediately ,In science the computer has performed in minutes experiments which would have required thousands of hours of work by human hands and minds.
Most experts agree that computers are necessary to solve the problems of increasing population ,city living ,and public affairs Without computers, the jobs of solving these problems would require millions of workers to do tons of paperwork Before any computer can work on any problem, it must be told what to do Someone must program the computer ,step―by―step. At first this was done by having the programmer write out his instructions in the form of numbers which would be“understood”by the machine ,Within a short time, attempts were made to perform a system that would enable humans to communicate programmer could use words that had meanings for him ,and another program in the ma-chine would translate the words into the computer’s number system.
Without special training ,in is impossible to under stand exactly how a computer does int work however ,many people without scientific training use computers in their daily lives .In some American schools for example young children are being taught by comput-ers for part of the school day.
The use of computers in school has worried some Americans There are those who fear is will remove human element from teacher-student relationships .On the other hand there are educators who consider computer program a valuable means of freeing teachers from the more boring and tiring tasks ,thus enabling them to spend more time with a single student.
In education ,as in business and industry science and medicine ,computers play an important part in almost every type of operation the future will bring major advances in computer technology ,which will aid man in his efforts to improve the world.

Shopping is not as simple as you may think! There are all sorts of tricks at play each time we reach out for that particular brand (品牌) of product on the shelf.
Colouring, for example, varies according to what the producers are trying to sell.Health foods are packaged (包装) in greens, yellows or browns because we think of these as healthy colours.Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver.
When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective.Eventually, it came on the market in a dark blue and white package—blue because we think of it as safe, and white as calm.
The size of a product can attract a shopper. But quite often a bottle doesn’t contain as much as it appears to.
It is believed that the better-known companies spend, on average, 70 per cent of the total cost of the product itself on packaging!
The most successful producers know that it’s not enough to have a good product. The founder of Pears soap, who for 25 years has used pretty little girls to promote (推销) their goods, came to the conclusion: “Any fool can make soap, but it takes a genius (天才) to sell it.”
53.Which of the following may trick a shopper into buying a product according to the text?
A.The cost of its package. B.The price of the product.
C.The colour of its package. D.The brand name of the product.

A.attracted the customers strongly B.had weak effects on the customers
C.tricked the customers into shopping D.caused the customers to lose interest
55.Which of the following is the key to the success in product sales?
A.The way to promote goods.
B.The discovery of a genius.
C.The team to produce a good product.
D.The brand name used by successful producers.
56.Which of the following would be the best title for this text?
A.Choice of Good Products B.Disadvantages of Products
C.Effect of Packaging on Shopping D.Brand Names and Shopping Tricks

I had an experience once which taught me something about the ways people make a bad situation worse by blaming themselves. One January, I officiated (主持) at two funerals for two elderly women. Both died a natural death. At the first home, the son of the deceased (已故的)woman said, “If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It's my fault that she died.” At the second home, the son said, “If only I hadn't insisted on her going to Florida, she would be alive today. That long airplane ride was more than she could take. It's my fault.”
When things don't turn out as we would like them to, we tend to assume that had we done things differently, the story would have had a happier ending.Any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty.Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believed that the opposite course, for example, keeping Mother at home, would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?
There seem to be two elements involved in our readiness to feel guilty. The first lies in our belief that the world makes sense there is a reason for everything that happens.
The second is the thought that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it.He wakes up in the morning and calls the rest of the world to its tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him, and when he is wet, people change him.Very often, we do not completely abandon that childish thought that our wishes cause things to happen.
57.What is true about the two deceased elderly women?
A.They both died of old age.
B.They died from hard work.
C.They weren't accustomed to the change in life.
D.They died due to lack of care by family members.
58.People feel guilty for the deaths of their loved ones because .
A.they cannot find a better way to express their sorrow
B.they believe that they are responsible for what has happened
C.they don't know the natural course of events
D.they don't know things often turn out in the opposite direction
59.The underlined part "the world makes sense" in Paragraph 3 probably means that .
A.everything in the world is planned in advance
B.the world can be understood in different ways
C.there's an explanation for everything in the world
D.we have to be wise in order to understand the world
60.People have believed since early childhood that .
A.everybody is at their command
B.life and death is an unsolved mystery
C.every story should have a happy ending
D.their wishes are the causes of everything that happens

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are a few suggestions.First, it is important to take a Chinese course, as you’ll be able to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellow students. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible.
Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.
Try and write me in Chinese next time.
Best wishes
Li Hua
