(1) 作动词,常构成短语 judge from/by ,意为“根据……判断”,该短语的现在分词形式在句中常作独立语。如:

2.except for 除了……之外
Except for a broken wood chair, the room was
empty. 屋子里除了一张破木椅什么都没有。
辨析 except for/except(1)except for 表示在肯定整体的情况下对某个细节进行
修正,后接的词与句子中的整体词(主语)不是同一类的。
如:Your composition is good except for a few spelling
mistakes.
你的这篇作文写得很好, 只是有几处拼写错误。
(错误和文章不是同类事物)(2)except 表示“除……以外”,强调排除在整体之外,一般表示同类之间的关系,常与 nothing, all, none, nobody, any 等不定代词以及 every 连用。
如:The library is open every day except Sundays.
除了星期日,这家图书馆每天都开放。

4.devote vt.专心致志于,献身于devote 常与介词 to 连用,构成短语 devote...to…,
意为“把……奉献给,把……专用于……”。如:

(2) devotion 为 devote 的名词形式, 是不可数名词,
也常与介词 to 连用。如:
We appreciated his devotion of time and money to the
project.
