Have you ever heard that we humans use only ten percent of our brains? This opinion holds a certain appeal because if it were true, then we could instantly become ten times more intelligent just by firing up that sleepy majority of the brain!21教育网
The idea that we use only a small part of the brain dates back to animal experiments in the 19th century. When scientists stimulated (刺激) a specific part of the brain, the animal moved its leg or tail. If a tiny part of the brain could do something so great, what was the use of the rest of the brain? Some scientists assumed that large parts of the brain were simply useless.21·世纪*教育网
Then, in the early 20th century, scientists observed that stimulating certain parts of the brain had no physical effects. They named these seemingly useless parts of the brain the "silent cortex." Today we know that in humans, much of the "silent cortex" is actually devoted to complex activities like language, learning, and imagining.www-2-1-cnjy-com
Brain scans have shown that different parts of the brain become much more active as we shift (切换) our attention and focus, but even as we sleep, many areas of the brain are extremely active. Would you be smarter if your entire brain constantly worked to maximum capacity (能力)?21*cnjy*com
Interestingly enough, the opposite is probably true. The less brain activity you need to perform a given task, the more the brain as a whole is able to do.
25. Why does the opinion mentioned in paragraph l seem appealing?
A. People wish to become much smarter.
B. People believe it is scientific.
C. People know nothing about the brain.
D. People want to make little use of their brain,
26. What did scientists discover in their experiment in the 20th century?
A. The majority of the brain is sleeping.
B. Animals' legs and tails have some connection with their brain.
C. Stimulation on some parts of the brain causes no physical reaction.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
D. Certain parts of the brain are devoted to language and learning activities,
27. "Silent cortex" has proved to be _.
A. sensitive to stimulation
B. useful in complex activities
C. responsible for physical reaction
D. more active than the other parts of the brain
28. If you need less brain activity to perform a task, _.【出处:21教育名师】
A. you will feel sleepy
B. you must shift your focus
C. you can use your brain to the fullest
D. you will be more productive

If you watch British television on March 15, you might be surprised to see celebrities(名人)wearing funny red noses and joking around. But don't worry. They're not mad. It's all part of a money raising event called Red Nose Day.
Founded in 1985 by two British comedians, the aim of the event is to raise money to fight poverty and injustice in the UK and Africa. Celebrities and public figures support the event by making appearances on comic TV shows. For example, UK Prime Minister David Cameron once appeared in a music video by One Direction, which the band produced for the event.
Britons don't just raise money for charitable causes on one day a year, but they do it all year round. One way of doing so is by shopping in charity shops. These small shops sell clothes, books and household goods just like any other shop except that it's all secondhand.
There are nearly 10,000 charity shops in the UK. Their business model is simple: Anybody who has things they don't want anymore can donate them to a charity shop, where they are checked for damage, cleaned and priced. The money that is made by selling them is used for a charitable cause.
The idea of buying used clothes may sound unpleasant, but for shoppers who have less spending money, it has been a welcome option. Now, shopping at charity shops is also becoming popular with young people looking for alternative fashion. "You can find very unique clothes for a very cheap price. It doesn't bother me that other people may have worn them. I simply wash them before I wear them." said Anne Marie, a 19-year-old from the US.
So next time you spot a charity shop, why not go inside? Who knows, you might find a lovely dress for just a few pounds. Even better, you can enjoy wearing it in the knowledge that your money helped a good cause.
29. Why did Cameron appear in One Direction's music video?
A. To earn a living. B. To support the band.
C. To help raising money. D. To entertain the audience.
30. Where are the goods of charity shops from?
A. Local bands. B. People's donation.
C. British comedians. D. The UK government.
31. What's Anne Marie's attitude to charity shops?
A. Favorable. B. Particular. C. Doubtful. D. Disapproving.
32. What is the text mainly about?
A. Red Nose Day. B. British celebrities.
C. Charity in Britain. D. Secondhand shops.

Keep Running into Mary Richards
When I was 13,I first met Mary Richards, the central character in the sitcom(situation comedy)"The Mary Tyler Moore Show". She was a single and independent career woman. As soon as I heard the show’s theme song Who can turn the world on with her smile?,I was hooked. My friends were huge fans as well. Passing in the hallway at school,we would shout to each other, trying to imitate(模仿)Mary’s accent. “Hi,Rho! See ya later, kid?”
The show lasted seven years , but our fascination(着迷)faded earlier. But that wasn’ t the end of Mary for me. In the 1990s,when I was single, living alone in a city,a TV-station began airing reruns of "The Mary. Tyler Moore Show" at 10 p.m. I was hooked all over again. But this time was different. The way she handled her career and relationships, sending a clear message that being 30-plus and single was just fine, won my respect on a whole new level.
Once again, however, life moved on. I went to live in a different city, and 10 p.m. became the perfect time to call my mother each night. For me,talking to Mom was always a great pleasure. So when my mom passed away,it was as if the sun had gone out of the sky. That feeling seemed particularly intense at 10 p.m.,when I’d find myself staring at my silent phone. And then I heard the song I’d first heard at age 13,Who can turn the world on with her smile?. Mary Richards,of course! Thanks to the wonder of technology,Mary was now as close as my phone. So every night at 10,I would dial up an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”
Weeks later,I realized I didn’t need my nightly sessions with Mary anymore, because mom’s and Mary’s elegance was showing itself in other corners of my life and, once again,I was ready to move on.
33. What does the author’s imitation with her friends indicate?
A. They had a very happy childhood.
B. The theme song was well received.

Everyone can benefit from making an effort to practice gratitude(感激)every day. The following three steps can help you start feeling more grateful, and appreciative of the good things in your life:
Notice the Good Things in Your Life
36 Pay attention to the small everyday details of your life-nature, people, community, shelter, creature comforts like a warm bed or a good meal. And then start a gratitude journal. Making a commitment to writing down good things each day makes it more likely that we will notice good things as they happen.
Enjoy the Feeling of Gratitude
There are moments when you naturally, right then and there, feel filled with gratitude. These are moments when you say to yourself, "Oh, wow, this is amazing! "or "How great is this!"Pause. 37 Let it sink in. Enjoy your blessings in the moment they happen.
Express Gratitude
Expressing gratitude is more than being polite. 38 Show your appreciation to someone who really did something nice. Say: "It was really kind of you to…,” "You did me a big favor when...," or "Thank you for being there when...". 39 Hold the door open for the person behind you, even if it means waiting a little longer than you normally would.
True gratitude doesn't leave you feeling like you owe other people something-after all, if you've done someone a favor, you probably don't want the person to feel like you expect something back in return. 40
A. It's about showing your heartfelt appreciation.
B. Notice and absorb that feeling of true gratitude.
C. You can also express gratitude by doing a kindness.
D. It's all about feeling good and creating a cycle of good.
E. Start to notice and identify the things you are grateful for.
F. Help someone without letting the person find out it was you.
G. It's amazing what you notice when you focus on feeling grateful.
