Over 2000 years ago, people known as the Celts lived in Northern Europe. They worshipped the sun god and believed the god made their crops grow. They believed that on the night of 31 October, all the souls returned to the world of human. Among the souls, some are good as angels, and the others are devils who were led by Death to kill people.Why did they make pumpkin lantern? To frighten away the ghosts, the Celts lit candles in lanterns at their doors. Later, Irish immigrants took the customs to the USA, people there lit lanterns made of hollowed-out pumpkin.Why did they wear spooky costumes? To celebrate All Souls Day invented by Catholic Church, people made big bonfires and dressed up as angels, devils, saints and witches. Another reason is that the Celts danced in costumes in order not to be recognized by Death.
