2. know the reasons why smokers are addicted to cigarettes as well as the harmful effects of smoking.
3. have a better understanding of the text
Key points: This lesson is to practice increasing the students’ reading speed within scanning and skimming for information

2. Overhead projector and computer
3. Learning plan handouts

Step 1Lead-in T shows the students two pictures and asks them a question According the pictures, they answer the question To lead in the text.
Step 2Skimming to get general ideas T gets the students to match the main idea with each paragraph.T asks the students to choose from each paragraph two words related to the main idea. Skim the passage and finish the task.Choose the words that they think can be related to the main idea To get familiar with the structure of the passage
Step 3Careful reading to get detailed information T gets the students to fill in the chart with the information from the passage. Reread the passage and find out the information to fill in the chart. To get the detailed information and learn the contents of the passage
Step 4Reading between the lines T raises a few questions Discuss the questions in a group of four to get the answers To check the students’ deep understanding of the passage
Step 5Discussion T sets up a language situation where the students are required to tell their teacher, who is addicted to smoking, the harmful effects of smoking and give him some suggestions to quit smoking. Discuss it in a group of four and list the harmful effects of smoking and suggestions to quit smoking To recall what Ss have learnt and develop their ability of making a summary
