用法：1）主要用来表示在特定过去时间中一次完成的动作或一度存在的状态。
如：He lived in Shanghai for 20 years

He has lived in Shanghai for 2 years.
(可能还在上海)2）一般过去时还可用于虚拟语气中的非真实的动作或状态，常用于特定句型中表示现在和将来时间。
如：It’s time you had a holiday.
I wish you lived closer to us.
If only he didn’t drive so fast!
If I had the money, I’d buy a car.

表示过去将要发生的动作。

He had planned to attend the meeting last Sunday, but an accident happened to him.
在told, said, knew, heard, thought等动词后的宾语从句中。
She said (that) she had never been to Paris. 在由hardly…when…, no sooner …than…引导的句子中，主句常用过去完成时。当hardly，no sooner位于句首时，主句的主谓要倒装。
No sooner had Sang Lan left hospital than she wanted to do something for disabled people.（2010年江苏高考）
