I am the third daughter in a family of five. I was born at Malden Hospital and was immediately sent to Floating Hospital in Boston. I had a hole in my heart and a low platelet count (血小板计数), which are common problems of people with TAR syndrome (综合征). I came home for a short stay after my birth and then went back and did not return home until just before Thanksgiving. My parents have told me that after I was born our family doctor had a very important conversation with them. He said, “You have two choices with your daughter. One is that you do everything for her now, in the future, and after you die; the other is that you do nothing.” My parents picked the former.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
I do not have a great many memories of my childhood but I do remember I spent the first ten years in and out of hospitals. I do remember I stayed in the Boston hospital until I was around 2 years old and then I went to Shriners. I guess few children can bear that.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
I've grown up with great determination. I think that was a personality trait that I was born with and then my family developed that in me as I grew up. I had to deal with a lot of people making fun of me, staring at me, and pitying me. At a young age I realized that I could hide my pain with laughter. So I used that method when other children made fun of me and they stopped a lot faster than if I cried. Laughter was not the expected response so I guess they didn't feel it was fun to continue. There was emotional and physical pain. I required the aid of a walker until I was about five years old. I had about ten major operations before the age of ten. I had to relearn to walk several times. I think having TAR syndrome has made me a strong person physically and emotionally. Despite these difficulties and challenges, I have gone on to be awarded a Master's Degree and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do (跆拳道), and I am now an inspirational speaker.

Why do some parents tend to hold back their disabled children from experiencing life? Even when they are grown, the parents will not allow certain things to happen. It's true that they do have a certain amount of responsibility in protecting their severely disabled adult children, but at what point do they become overly protective?
Parents want to create a safe haven, a place where they know that nothing bad will happen to their beloved children. This seems to be a respectable and notable act in caring for a person with a disability, but it can have a side effect. When protect their children from suspected hardships, not wanting anything bad to happen to them, they very well may be preventing good things from happening to them.
In life we all make mistakes, it is how we are able to grow and strengthen our character.Parents may feel that in certain instances their children will get hurt or mistreated in some way, so they build walls in their own minds convincing themselves of the need to shelter. However, the disabled, yes even the “severely disabled” deserve to make personal mistakes as well.Even more, they have the right to succeed.2-1-c-n-j-y
Parents should do everything and anything within their power to see their disabled children lead a somewhat “normal”life.Parents should help their children, rather than hold them down. This could make them think they are unworthy and that their parents do not believe in them.
Whatever it may be, let them at least try.If they want to attend college, so be it.Parents should find out all they can, and be involved in every detail. If they want to date and someday marry, so be it. Don't shut them out and from bad or critical opinions about them just because you are afraid.Unite as a family and make it work.

Nina Simone is considered by many to be one of the finest singers and songwriters of her generation. She is also one of the most powerful symbols of the civil rights movement in America.
She was born in 1933 in North Carolina. At the age of seven she was already performing music in a local church, later moving to New York to study classical piano at the Juilliard School of Music, a rare opportunity for a black woman in the 1950s.
Nina became deeply involved in the American civil rights movement, capturing the tragedy and pain of the assassination (暗杀) of Martin Luther King in her song Why? The King of Love Is Dead. She later made another attack on racial injustice in the US with her song Mississippi Goddam, written after a bombing of a church in Alabama that killed a group of black schoolgirls.
In 1969 her song To Be Young, Gifted and Black made her a role model for African-American women and became an anthem (颂歌) for the movement to end segregation (种族隔离) in the United States. The jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater later declared, “I would say the person who influenced me the most as a young black girl was Nina Simone because she was so outspoken.”
In 1974, after becoming disappointed with life in the United States, she moved to Barbados for a while before settling in the south of France in the early 1990s. In an interview in 1998 she said that her protest songs had been her personal attempt to defend the rights of American blacks. Nina blamed racism in the United States for her decision to live abroad, saying that racial inequality in the U.S., even then, was “worse than ever”.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage (垃圾) from beaches and parks.Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves.Volunteers don't expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people.Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa's homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world.I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I wanted to try her kind of work, too.So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people.I helped wash clothes and sheets, and prepare lunch.I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up.I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them.To be honest, I don't think I was helping very much.It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”

In the future, when robots can be used both in homes and in other areas, they could improve the living standards of people. Many people burn their energy on their day-to-day tasks like cooking, cleaning after work, etc. When robots can complete such jobs, people can spend more time with their family and friends. Experts say that many major problems in the modern world are caused by miscommunication. When people have more time, they can talk freely to solve such issues and eventually create a happy society.21教育名师原创作品
Robots can be used on certain jobs to avoid accidents caused by careless behavior of some people. When robots are used on such work, it does not risk any human life due to accidents at the workplace. Human resources can be efficiently used by performing tasks which demand human skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Robots can be used on low-end jobs like moving heavy things and heavy weight lifting.21*cnjy*com
While some people talk about how robots can be useful to humans, others voice their concerns about reduction in human value and the creation of a lazy society due to heavy dependency on robots. When robots become cheaper to produce, employers may prefer to use more robots than humans. As the technology constantly improves the abilities of robots, it could weaken the value of humans. Many people may rely on robots heavily. Some may even develop the habit of using robots on tasks that they can easily do. This could create a lazy society.
As an aging society, Japan sees it as a must to build robots that take care of elderly people at their home, because without them, the nation's health care system can't cope. There will simply be too many elderly people to care for as the nation faces a decreasing birth rate, an aging population, and the loosening of family ties. However, many of Japan's elderly people would prefer human helpers rather than robots. Above all, Japan wants, if not “needs”, its dreams of robots in the home to come true because its immigration (移民) policy is anti-immigration.
In conclusion, robots can be used on anything that can eventually improve humans' living standards but we can't depend on them too much. Robots can be used to help humans live in harmony and form a happy society.【出处:21教育名师】

As civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic essentials of life — food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the other hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order to earn a given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that necessary for comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours.21cnjy.com
I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also expect to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the housewives will wish to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as scrubbing the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or sweeping, or making beds.2-1-c-n-j-y
By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen or more standard operation, when is switched by the housewife.
5.As civilization develops in the direction of technology, ________.
A.the basic essentials of life must be supplied

Each year about 250,000 Americans study in other countries. Some study-abroad programs are trying harder to get students to learn about the local culture. One student, on his first morning in Beijing, was brought to a distant part of the city. He received money and instructions on how to get back. It took some time but he succeeded.
William Finlay heads the Sociology Department at the University of Georgia in the United States. He says challenges like this help students experience another culture.
In 2008, Professor Finlay started a program with South Africa's Stellenbosch University. The program combines traditional classroom learning with community involvement through a non-governmental organization. He says, “We've been working with a particular non-governmental organization in the town and we do two things: We run a number of creches (托儿所), which are basically day care centers for children whose parents are working, and the library in the community where there are some computers. Our students typically work either with the little kids in the day care centers or they work in the library and teach very basic computer skills to mostly young adults.”
Hillary Kinsey is studying international affairs. She spent three weeks in the Stellenbosch program. She says it was interesting to learn the history of the area and the recent development. When Ms Kinsey returned from South Africa recently, she and other students in the program created a non-profit organization called Ubunto, whose goal is to help improve education and development in South Africa.
Mark Lenhart is the executive director of CET Academic Programs. Each year, that company places more than 1,000 students in semester and summer study programs. The programs are in China, Jordan, the Czech Republic and other countries. He says, “In all of our locations, we place students with local roommates.” Students gain from that, he says, but the experience is not always easy. He says, “Not just in terms of language learning, but they also find the local culture can present challenges, and perhaps misunderstandings. They have to adjust to local life. It's no longer OK just to have a little Chinese, for instance. If a student is studying Chinese, they want to come home from a program like this fluent in Chinese. And this will enable students to become more employable when they graduate.”

If anything can be said about record-breaking globetrotter (环球旅行家) Graham Hughes, it's that — throughout his travels — he's always kept his feet firmly on the ground.
The 33-year-old adventurer, from Liverpool, has become the first person to visit all 201 countries in the world — without using a plane.
Hughes used buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel 160,000 miles in exactly 1,426 days — all on a shoestring (资金微薄) of just $100 a week.
He spent four days “crossing open ocean in a leaky (漏的) boat” to reach Cape Verde on the North Atlantic, was jailed for a week in the Congo for being mistaken as a “spy”, and was arrested trying to “sneak (溜;偷偷地做) into” Russia.
And yesterday Graham Hughes trudged (长途跋涉) into Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to end the epic four-year journey that began in his hometown of Liverpool on New Year's Day 2009.
“I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was that I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person traveling on a shoestring,” he told the Christian Science Monitor.“I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact it is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.”
Guinness has now confirmed that Hughes, who filmed the expedition for a documentary and raised money for charity Water Aid, has achieved the world record.
“The main feeling today is just one of intense gratitudes to every person around the world who helped me get here, by giving me a lift, letting me stay on their couch, or pointing me in the right direction,” Hughes added.

In the Arctic Ocean waters live the social animals — belugas, which is also known as white whales. Highly intelligent, these whales use different sounds to communicate and find their way. Belugas are also among the smallest kinds of whales.2-1-c-n-j-y
More than 210 belugas, including 31 in the United States, live in aquariums (水族馆) around the world. The Georgia Aquarium has asked for permission to bring 18 more belugas into the US. The whales were caught off the coast of Russia. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is considering the aquarium's request thoroughly. A law called the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) says the animals can only be brought into the country and put on display if they are caught without being hurt and there is an educational reason for doing so.
Georgia Aquarium officials say the 18 belugas will help people learn more about the species and allow scientists to better understand how to protect it. The aquarium would also breed the whales so the US aquariums can continue to display them. “When we can study and observe, we gain a better understanding of their biology and diseases that affect them, and learn how to aid populations in their natural habitats,” says William Hurley, Georgia Aquarium's chief officer. “Much of this research would be impossible in the remote locations and extreme climates where the animals live.” The Georgia Aquarium would own the 18 belugas and would rent some to aquariums across the country.
Meanwhile, many scientists, including Lori Marino, a whale expert, feel strongly that the whales belong in the ocean, not in tanks. These scientists say the whales are being used for entertainment and not for education, and having them in aquariums is not necessary for the species to survive. Marino said, “Not only is it unfair to the belugas but there is no educational value in putting these whales on display.”

Natural noise from waves, wind, rain and even earthquakes is common in oceans. Unfortunately, man-made noise from oil and gas drilling, sonar, and ships is also present.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
Low frequency noise has doubled off the California coast every decade since the nineteen sixties. The main reasons are ships' propellers (螺旋桨). They not only generate continuous low frequency sound, some propellers cavitate (形成气穴), which means they create air bubbles that collapse, creating loud popping sounds.
Whales use low frequency calls to communicate across thousands of miles of ocean. They are threatened by noise pollution because it can prevent them from contacting each other and from locating their foods. Endangered humpback and right whales, which use fibrous baleen to strain food from the water, are the most at risk.
Scientists studying right whales off Canada's east coast have discovered that whales are sending louder calls through the water to make themselves heard. Because they invest more energy in making calls, they have less energy available for finding food and mating. Other scientists measuring whale calls against background noise pollution have discovered that right whales have lost about eighty percent of their normal communication area. This could seriously affect survival of this already threatened species.21*cnjy*com
Scientists don't have badges and guns, but they are trying to correct the noise pollution problem. By tracking ships and marine mammals and understanding how noise travels, they are creating sound maps. They hope to get shipping lanes moved so that the noise pollution ships create will not overlap with areas most important to the whales.
