Here are a few tips we've put together to help you learn English well.
Speak, speak, speak!
Practise speaking as often as you can even speaking to yourself is good practice.
Try recording yourself whenever you can. Compare your pronunciation with the master version, see how you can do better and have another go. If you do this several times, you will find that each version is better than the last.
Why not learn with someone else?
It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working. Agree times to meet and set goals for the week, and test each other regularly.
Don't get stuck by a word you don't know.
Practise improvising(即兴的)ways of getting your meaning across when speaking spontaneously(本能地), even if you don't know the exact words or phrases. Think of the things you might want to say whenever you have spare time. A basic example is the use of tenses. If you don't know the past tense but want to talk about yesterday, use the verb in the present tense and use the word for ‘yesterday’. Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to get your meaning across.
Language learning is also about intuition(直觉).
Guesswork is an important strategy in learning a new language. When listening to recorded material, you aren't expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time. Learn to make maximum use of all the clues you can pick up. For example, what do the speakers sound like? Happy? Angry? Calm? etc.
Build up your vocabulary.
A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don't try to learn too much at once. It's best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take a maximum of six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, then come back to them later. Much of the vocabulary in the course is presented by topic.
And above all, have fun!
56. Why should one have himself recorded when practising speaking?
A. To improve his speaking.
B. To record his own progress.
C. To encourage others to start.
D. To compare himself with others.
57. Which of the following is the most important in learning English in the writer's opinion?
A. Speaking. B. Pleasure. C. Intuition. D. Vocabulary.
58. It is implied in the passage that _______ is helpful when you are learning English.
A. body language B. a good memory
C. a good friend D. a proper dictionary
59. According to the passage, one should _______ when learning English.
A. always work with other people
B. be able to guess everything new
C. often review what he has learnt
D. take little notice of grammar
60. Which of the following proverbs(谚语)doesn't seem always true in learning a language?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. A good beginning is half done.
C. Rome is not built in a day.
D. Don't run before you can walk.
56.提示:Tip 1中指出,录音后经“compare(比较)”,达到“have another go”,即“better”。
? 答案:A
? 57.提示:根据末段“And above all, have fun”可见最重要的是“pleasure(=fun)”。
? 答案:B
? 58.提示:文中“Use facial expressions, hand movements”指的实质上就是“body language”。
? 答案:A
? 59.提示:Tip 5中的“come back to them,”即“温习;回顾”之意。
? 答案:C
? 60.提示:D项谚语是教人们做事要按部就班,而Tip 3中表明,如果你还不会用过去时,那就用现在时代替。可见该谚语在学习英语中并不适用。

In 1933 an unknown American called Clarence Nash went to see the filmmaker Walt Disney. He had an unusual voice and he wanted to work in Disney's cartoon film for children. When Walt Disney heard Nash's voice, he said, “Stop! That's our duck!”
The duck was the now famous Donald Duck, who first appeared in 1934 in the film, The Wise Little Hen. Donald lived in an old houseboat and worn his sailor jacket and hat. Later that year he became a star after an eight-minute Mickey Mouse film. The cinema audience liked him because he was lazy and greedy, and because he lost his temper very easily. And they loved his voice when he became angry with Mickey's eight nephews. Soon Donald was more popular than Mickey Mouse himself, probably because he wasn't a goody-goody, like Mickey.
In the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Donald and his friends Mickey, Goofy and Pluto made hundreds of Disney cartoons. He also made educational film about the place of the USA in the world, and safety in the home. Then in 1966 Donald Duck and his voice disappeared—there were no more new cartoons.

Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow yourself to make your life happen.
Successful and happy people have a vision of how their life should be and they set lots of goals (both short-term and long-range) to help them reach their vision. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind (her goal) which is laid out for her on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be?
Winners in life set goals and follow through on(坚持到底)them. Winners decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren't difficult to set, and they aren't difficult to reach. It's up to you to find out what your goals, ideals and visions really are. You are the one who must decide what to pursue and in what direction to aim your life.
Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract(合同)with yourself, they are harder to neglect or forget. ?Also when you write your goals in a particular fashion you are able to stimulate yourself to be continuously alert to situations that will further your goals.
66. The author gave the example of two drivers to show _______.
A. the foolishness of the first driver
B. the importance of having a map and right direction
C. the foolishness of the second driver
D. the importance of setting goals
67. According to this text, the most important thing in realizing one's ideal is to _______.
A. try to be realistic about one's ability
B. have a clear understanding of what he or she wants in life
C. let others understand him or her first, and then work together with them
D. let others help him or her to make his or her dream come true

A. write down their goals
B. sign a contract with other people

Garry Kasparov, the Russian grandmaster of chess(棋)who was the world champion(冠军), played a match against the IMB supercomputer Deep Blue. Mr. Kasparov lost the six-game encounter by a single game. Now almost six years later, Mr. Kasparov begins a match against an Israeli program, Deep Junior, the three-time world computer chess champion. The match will be played at the New York Athletic Club, and shown in real time on the Web at www. x3dworld. com. The play will start at 3:30 p. m. on Jan. 26, 28, and 30, and on Feb. 2, 5, and 7.
As early as 1957, Herbert A. Simon predicted (预言)that a machine would become the world chess champion in ten years. A game of chess is considered a calculation, and calculation, of course, is what computers are good at. The situation today is that both humans and machines can play world-class chess, but they do completely differently. Deep Junior examines three million positions per second. But even at that speed, it cannot generally see that far ahead. That is because the number of possible chess positions is staggering. There are some 85 billion ways of playing just the first four moves for each side. The strength of world-class human players lies in their ability to decide who stands better in a given position, and that ability is hard to build into a machine. Mr Kasparov admits that he examines only one to three moves a second, but he suspects that they are the strongest ones.
Although Deep Junior is much slower than the IBM computer, experts said it had more chess knowledge built into it. It clearly considers more elements in judging a position. “Junior is very humanlike,” Mr Kasparov said, “It's a computer version(转变)of me. It plays forcefully, imaginatively and takes risks. The match will be close, but I'm determined to win. One thing I know is that humans' days at the top of the chess world are limited. I give us just a few years. ”
69. Which of the following statements is true to the facts about Deep Junior?
A. It has already beaten three human players.
B. It cannot choose ways of playing freely.
C. Its strength lies in its speed of calculating.
D. It works much faster than Deep Blue.
70. What does the passage lead you to believe about the match between Kasparov and Deep Junior?
A. It's hard to tell who will win it.
B. It's likely that Kasparov will win it.
C. It's possible that the match has no result.
D. It's likely that Kasparov will lose it.
71. What conclusion can you draw according to the passage?
A. The balance between humans and computers will hardly be broken.
B. There will be no more hope for humans to beat computers soon.
C. There has never been any hope for humans to beat computers.
D. Human beings will always have advantages over computers.
72. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Let's Cheer for Both Sides.
B. A Final Chance for Human Beings.
C. Comparison Between Humans and Computer.
D. Chess Champion Faces New Computer.
? 答案:A
? 71.提示:在末段中,世界冠军预测人类处于棋界之颠的日子已屈指可数,由此可作出推断。
? 答案:B
? 72.提示:综观全文,可见作者将人与计算机在下棋方面作了种种对比,故可得出答案。

The Internet and the World Web(网)are great places to be right now. We use the word “place” because so many of the things you can do online are similar to the things you can do wherever people gather together—in homes, schools, libraries, shopping centers, or at family reunions or town meetings. The Net allows people to learn shop, find important information, and communicate, whether they're local, global or simply virtual(虚的).
The Web is useful. You can find old friends online. You can research and book flights, check the weather, find breaking news, find out information about schools and colleges. You can even place an order for books, CDs, computers and cars.
The Internet is also fun. You can write to old friends or check out their web pages, enjoy web-based soap operas, laugh at online jokes, join in a live Net Event, chat with other Internet surfers(漫游者), check to see if your name appears anywhere on the Web.
Millions of users log on to the Net every day, and it's not just to do research. There's a lot of fun there. That's one reason why it's called “web surfing”.
Of course, the first step to using the Web for business or for fun is learning how to work a “web browser”. If you're new to computers, it may take a while before you are completely comfortable with your browser. Don't worry. You don't have to be a computer whiz. The basics of a web browser are very much like the basics of modem computers—learning how to point and click the mouse, learning how to scroll up and down a page of text, and learning how to use pull-down menus. Again, be patient. There's no time limit on web surfing. Give yourself a chance to explore(探索)the browser itself while you explore the Web.
73. The writer compares the Web to _______.
A. places to visit
B. places to gather together in
C. some easy job
D. things you can do online
74. We can learn from the text that the Web is not only _______ but also _______.
A. of great use; of great value
B. of great use; of great enjoyment
C. useful; funny
D. of some use; of a little interest
75. The underlined word “whiz” (in Paragraph 5) probably refers to a person who _______.
A. is a computer expert
B. is a computer fan
C. is lost in computer games
D. owns a computer company
73.提示:从第一段的“The Internet and the World Web are great places to be right now”可得答案。

Dr. Adele Juda studied 5,000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population. Poets had the highest rate of mental illness (50 per cent), followed by musicians (38 per cent), with lower numbers for painters and architects (17-20 per cent). The average rate of mental illness in the population is 6 per cent.
Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it.
Dr. Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough. Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric(精神病的)patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group.
Also, the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is our genes.
But this is a problem. As mental illness is harmful, why should its genes survive in at least 6 percent of the population? According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution(进化)has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.
Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.
