(Text 10)
In West Africa and Australia, there exists an unusual tree called the baobab. It’s a strange-looking tree. Its huge trunk sometimes measures as much as ten metres in diameter. It is thicker at the bottom than at the top. The branches near the ground are very long; those near the top are very short. It may look strange, but it is extremely useful. Its leaves are good to eat. Its white flowers turn into cool juicy fruit which tastes rather like cucumber. There are such strong fibres in the skin of the trunk that people can make rope and cloth from them. When a baobab gets old, its trunk becomes empty inside. An old tree’s empty inside space can be huge enough to hold many people. The local people even build their houses inside these trunks. When it rains, water collects in the trunk and remains cool and fresh because of such a lot of leaves and branches.

Knowledge is power(力量).But there is one other thing that we must remember. A strong mind needs a strong body in order to make it useful.
There are a great many good exercises. They are helpful and healthful. Many of them may be taken indoors during rainy weather. Indoor exercises, however, are never as helpful as those taken out of doors in pure(纯的),fresh air. It is because in fresh air more oxygen(氧气)is taken into our body systems(体系)and more wastes are given off. The air in the house does not remain fresh very long. But out of doors it is usually fresh and pure.

This year 2300 teenagers (young people aged from 13-19)from all over the world will spend about ten months in U.S. homes. They will attend U.S. schools, meet U.S. teenagers, and form impressions(印象)of the real American teenagers. American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and have a new understanding of the rest of the world.
Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In return, George’s son, Mike, spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected —much harder. Students rose respectfully (尊敬地)when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities (活动).
Family life, too, was different. The family’s word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual (个人).Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. “I suppose I should criticize (批评)American schools,” he says. “It is far too easy by our level (水准).But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens (市民).There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”

A. help teenagers in other countries know the real America
B. send students in America to travel in Germany
C. let students learn something about other countries
D. have teenagers learn new languages
69. What did Fred and Mike agree on?

D. There were more cars on the streets in America.
70. What is particular(特别的) in American schools?
A. There is some middle ground between the two teaching buildings.
B. There are a lot of after-school activities.
C. Students usually take 14 subjects in all.
D. Students go outside to enjoy themselves in a car.
71. What did Mike think after experiencing the American school life?

The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945,some researchers realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives(添加剂)caused cancer.
Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings(包装)of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes similar tings are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.

参考答案:
January 31, 2010
Dear Li Ming,
I am studying in Toronto University. Now I have some problems with my roommate, Tom, and I am writing to ask you for help.
Tom is basically a good guy. But he doesn’t care much about some of his behaviors. He pays no attention to the room sanitation, often leaves his things about. He plays very loud music during the rest time. At times, I find him using others’ daily things without permission. What’s worse, he often brings his friends here to drink, talking and laughing loudly. I have been trying to ask him not to do that, but he doesn’t listen to me. What shall I do? Would you be so kind as to give me some advice?
Best wishes!
Yours,
Zhang Hua
