The clock struck eleven at night. The whole house was quiet. Everyone was in bed except me. Under the strong light, I looked sadly before me at a huge pile of that troublesome stuff they call “books”.
I was going to have my examination the next day. “When can I go to bed?” I asked myself. I didn’t answer. In fact I dared not.
The clock struck twelve. “Oh, dear!” I cried. “Ten more books to read before I can go to bed!” We pupils are the most wretched creatures in the world. Dad does not agree with me on this. He did not have to work so hard when he was a boy.
The clock struck one. I was quite desperate now. I forgot all I had learned. I was too tired to go on. I did the only thing I could. I prayed, “Oh God, please help me pass the exam tomorrow. I do promise to work hard afterwards, Amen.” My eyes were so heavy that I could hardly open them. A few minutes later, with my head on the desk, I fell asleep.

A. happy B. disappointed C. unhappy D. hopeful

A. He went to a church to pray again. B. He passed the exam all by luck.
C. He failed in the exam. D. He was punished by his teacher.

A. The Night Before the Examination B. Working Far into the Night
C. A Slow Student D. Going Over My Lessons

In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Jonses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
55. Some people want to keep up with the Joneses because they ____________.
A. want to be as rich as their neighbours B. want others to know or to think that they are rich
C. don’t want others to know they are rich D. want to be happy
56. It can be inferred from the story that rich people like to ____________.
A. live outside New York City B. live in New York city
C. live in apartments D. have many neighbours
57. Arthur Momand used the name “Jones” in his series of short stories because “Jones” is ____________.
A. an important name B. a popular name in the United States
C. his neighbour’s name D. not a good name
58. According to the writer, it is ____________ to keep up with the Joneses.
A. correct B. interesting C. impossible D. good

Be sure to book a table if the restaurant you choose is an expensive or a popular one. You will feel embarrassed to show up without booking and having to wait for a table, leaving very bad impression on your friend, especially your girl friend. Also, be sure to check to see if you need to be properly dressed and tell your friend ahead of time what to wear.
When your food arrives, proper dining manners make you eat at a right pace so that you have time to talk. A good measure of how fast you should eat is to count 10 seconds between each mouthful and it’s bad manners if you eat too fast and then spend the rest of the time watching your friend eat.
Don’t make noise when having soup and chewing, or chew with your mouth open. Your napkin should be placed on your lap at all times. Don’t put it in any other place. If you have to get up, place it neatly on your seat.
When eating, put your fork straight in your mouth. Don’t place your fork in the side of your mouth as it increases the chances of dropping your food, which could be very embarrassing. If you get food stuck in your mouth, don’t pick it out with your fingers or fork at the table. Excuse yourself and go to restroom and get it out with a toothpick.
When dining, keep your eyes on your friend at all times and try to smile between mouthfuls. Sometimes, you should make an effort to show some interest and ask questions like, “How do you like the beef?” if she needs, you are the one who is supposed to flag down the waiter by a gentle wave of the hand until someone notices you.
59. If you want to eat in a popular restaurant, the author of the passage suggests that ____________.
A. you book a table beforehand B. you book a table beforehand and check to be properly dressed
C. you go with a friend D. you just show up any time you want
60. Good eating manners do NOT include ____________.
A. eating at a proper pace B. making sounds to show how much you enjoy food
C. placing a napkin on your lap D. showing some interest in your friend when dining
61. The passage is mainly about ____________.
A. dinning manners B. an expensive restaurant C. what to wear D. what to eat

Today, the town of Silver Cliff, Colorado, has a population of only 100 people. Once, however, it was a rich mining(矿业) town where thousands came with dreams of finding silver and making their fortune.
Late one night in 1880, a group of miners headed back to their camp after a good time in town. They were still laughing and joking as they approached the graveyard (墓地) on a hill outside Silver Cliff. Then one of the men screamed and pointed toward the graveyard. The others looked and fell suddenly silent. On top of each grave, they saw flame-like blue lights. These strange and frightening lights seemed to be dancing on the graves, disappearing and then appearing again.
This was the first time that people had seen the blue lights of Silver Cliff. There have been many other sightings over the years. In 1969, Edward Lineham from National Geographical Magazine visited the graveyard. Lineham’s article tells of his experience: “I saw them… Weak, round spots of blue-white light among the graves. I…stepped forward for a better look. They disappeared. I aimed my flashlight at one and turned it on. It showed only a tombstone(墓碑).” Lineham and others have suggested various explanations for the blue lights of Silver Cliff: The lights might have been images of lights from the town, but Silver Cliff’s lights seemed too weak to have this effect. They could have been caused by the burning of gases from things that have gone bad, but this usually happens in swamps (沼泽), and the area around Silver Cliff is dry. Or, perhaps, the lights are lights used by dead miners wandering the hills in search of the fortune they had come for.
62. What is strange about Silver Cliff?
A. It used to be a place where people went to make their fortune.
B. People have been seeing strange lights from the graveyard.
C. It was a rich mining town.
D. It is no longer a town of silver.
63. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 show?
A. It suggests that they were too frightened to speak.
B. It shows that they were a bit curious.
C. It means they were ready to do some research work.
D. It explains how interested they were in the flame.
64. Which of the following does NOT belong to people’s explanation of the blue lights?
A. The lights might be from city lights.
B. The burning of gases caused those lights.
C. The lights might be from the lights used by the dead miners.
D. Something in the grave gives out lights.
65. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Things easily go wrong in Silver Cliff.
B. The blue lights have something to do with silver.
C. Many people left Silver Cliff because of the blue lights.
D. Most of the people who saw the blue lights died.

To the Editor,
I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes(食谱) in the newspaper, as well as the Styles section.
The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story. I' ve never read an article that doesn't contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week's issue, you misspelled the word“secretary,”used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used “it's”as a possessive(所有格). And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to elementary school, “it's”means “it is. ”It's not a possessive adjective!
It's a pity that this tiny little hick (乡下) town has only one newspaper, because I' d like to have an alternative to the rag you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can' t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right?
I' ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel my subscription(订阅 ).And buy yourself a dictionary.
Sincerely,
Jane Z. Jones

B. It' s a pity this town has only one newspaper.
C. The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story.

Do you feel unsettled(紧张不安) and uncertain before a test? Do you long to improve your methods of learning? Many students complain that their serious problem is a lack of concentration. It severely affects their ability to study, so do their test results.
If so, use these tips(秘诀) to help you.
Study Techniques(学习技巧)
You should always study in the same place. You shouldn’t sit in a position that you use for another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax. Don’t watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the equipment you need. Apart from your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in a box beside it.
Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Place your book at an angle of 30 degrees.
Be realistic and don’t try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to telephone a friend or have something to eat.
Test-taking Skills(应试技巧)
All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. This means : do not study all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months.
Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too.
When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of everyone else and fix your mind on the test paper.

Never go into a supermarket hungry! This is a good piece of advice. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers(消费者) these days. Modern shoppers need an education in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package (包装盒)influence (影响)you. Instead, read the list of ingredients(成分) on the back. Third, compare prices: that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands(品牌) and different sizes of the same brand.
Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain(简单的、无装饰的) packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing (包装)or advertising. The quality, however, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount(打折的) clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Although these stores aren’t very attractive, and they usually do not have individual(个人的) dressing rooms(更衣室), not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.
Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials(商业), but they do this with one advantage: knowledge of the psychology(心理学) behind the ads. In other words, well-informed(博闻的) consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions: Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image(表象,形象)? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.
53. One of the author’s suggestions to consumers is ____.
A. to buy any ordinary items instead of famous brands
B. not to buy items with words like “New and Improved” or “All Natural”
C. to buy high quality items such as famous brands after lunch
D. watch for information and check for misinformation in the ads

A. producers spend less money on packaging of ordinary items

C. ordinary items never say “New and Improved” or “All Natural”
D. the quality of ordinary items is usually as good as that of famous brands
55. The author implies (暗示)that ____.
A. going into the supermarket hungry, you may buy more than you plan to
B. the quality of ordinary items is usually as good as the quality of famous brands.
C. discount clothing stores are good places to go to
D. ads sometimes don’t tell the truth
56. The writer think that ads_____
A. are believable. B. are helpful to consumers.
C. are full of attractive image. D. are attractive.

The Peales were a famous family of American artists. Charles Wilson Peale is best remembered for his portraits(人物肖像) of leading figures(领袖) of the American Revolution. He painted portraits of Franklin and Jefferson and over a dozen of George Washington. His life-size portrait of his sons Raphaelle and Titian was so realistic(逼真) that George Washington reportedly once tipped his hat to the figures in the picture.
Charles Wilson Peale gave up painting in his middle age and devoted his life to the Peale museum, which he founded in Philadelphia. The world’s first popular museum of art and natural science mainly covered paintings by Peale and his family as well as displays(展览) of animals in their natural settings. Peale found the animals himself and found a method to make the exhibits more lifelike. The museum’s most popular display was the skeleton (骷髅) of a huge, extinct(绝迹的) elephant, which Peale unearthed on a New York farm in 1801.
Three of Peale’s seventeen children were also famous artists. Raphaelle Peale often painted still lives of flowers, fruit, and cheese. Returning to India in January 1915, Gandhi soon became involved in labor organizing. The Jallianwala Bagh mass murder of Amritsar (1919), in which troops fired on and killed hundreds of nationalist demonstrators(示威者), turned him to direct political protest. Within a year he was the important figure in the Indian National Congress. He launched on a policy of noncooperation with the British in 1920-22. Although total noncooperation was given up, Gandhi continued civil disobedience, organizing protest marches against unpopular British measures, such as the salt tax (1930), and refusing British goods.
Gandhi was repeatedly sent to prison by the British and used hunger strikes as part of his civil disobedience. His final imprisonment came in 1942-44, after he had demanded total withdrawal of the British (the "Quit India" movement) during World War II.
Gandhi also fought to improve the life of the lowest classes of society, the ‘Untouchables’, whom he called harijans ("children of God"). He believed in manual labor and simple living; he spun thread and made cloth for his own clothes and insisted that his followers do so, too. He disagreed with those who wanted India to industrialize.
Gandhi was also tireless in trying to form closer ties between the Hindu majority and the numerous minorities of India, particularly the Muslims. He was killed in Delhi on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu murderer who mistakenly thought Gandhi's policy was evil .

? ?A new study warns that about thirty percent of the world's people may not have enough water by the year 2025.
A private American organization called Population Action International did the new study. It says more than three-hundred-thirty-five-million people lack enough water now. The people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.
P-A-I researcher Robert Engelman says by the year 2025, about three-thousand-million people may lack water. At least 18 more countries are expected to have severe water problems. The demand for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount of water on Earth stays the same.
Mr. Engelman says the population in countries that lack water is growing faster than in other parts of the world. He says population growth in these countries will continue to increase.
The report says lack of water in the future may result in several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking waters not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases, such as cholera, which are carried in water. Lack of water may also result in more international conflict. Countries may have to compete for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their fresh water from other countries. This is true of Egypt, the Netherlands, Cambodia, Syria, Sudan, and Iraq. And the report says lack of water would affect the ability of developing to improve their economies. This is because new industries often need a large amount of water when they are beginning.
The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One way, it says, is to find ways to use water for more than one purpose. Another way is to teach people to be careful not to waste water. A third way is to use less water of agriculture.
The report also says long-term solutions to the water problem must include controls on population growth. It says countries cannot provide clean water unless they slow population growth by limiting the number of children people have.

B. There is connection between providing clean water and slowing population growth
C. The ability of developing has nothing to do with lack of water.
D. It is not known whether diseases have something to do with lack of water

A teardrop-shaped island located in the Indian Ocean, Sri lanka is filled with cultural and natural treasures. Indians, Portuguese, Dutch and British have all left their marks here, making for a delightful mix of ancient cities, monuments and atmospheric colonial architecture. At the same time, palm-fringed beaches are never far away . It's clear to see why Marco Polo proclaimed Sri Lanka to be one of the best islands in the world.
The beach thing may be a cliché(陈腔滥调), but don't miss them. Then head to the hills to cool off amidst tea plantations and ancient cities. The island is filled with bird life, and even the occasional elephant . To top it all off, the people are friendly, the food is delicious and costs are low.
Climatically the driest and best seasons are from December to March on the west and south coasts and in the Hill Country, and from May to September on the east coast. December to March is also the time when most foreign tourists come, the majority of them escaping the European winter.
Out of season travel has its advantages - it's less crowded, and many airfares and accommodation(膳宿)prices go right down. Nor does it rain all the time. Reefs may protect a beach area and make swimming quite available at places like Hikkaduwa, which during the seasonal wind can be quite pleasant.
July/August is the time of the Kandy Esala Perahera, the 10-day festival honouring the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, and also the time for the Kataragama Festival in the South. In both towns accommodation just before, during and immediately after the festivals is very difficult to come by, and rates usually double or treble. Be sure to book rooms well in advance.
The country was also seriously damaged by the 2004 tsunami(海啸), which killed more than 30,000 Sri Lankans and wiped out many coastal communities. While many tourists have been discouraged by the troubles, tourism is a healing force in this hard-hit country, and visitors will be sure to get a warm welcome.
64. From the passage we can conclude
A. it takes people a long time to go to beaches.
B. no European countries have left marks here
C. most foreign tourists come to this country because they want to run away from their home.
D. it is people and food here that attract tourists rather than ancient cities and animal life.
65. Tourism is thought
A. to be good to the hard-hit country. B. to do harm to the country.
C. to have caused the damage D. not to be thought well of in the country
66. The fourth paragraph suggests that
A. many more tourists make out of season travel B. many hotels close down
C. there are fewer tourists D. it rains all the time
67. The underlined word probably means .

So long as teachers fail to pick out the difference between teaching and learning, they will continue to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible.”
Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and fun_ction(功能). The fun_ction of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to come up with the most efficient way for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity: It can be seen and observed.
Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is a job of the mind, and that process is not open to public scutiny
If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable(可交换的), what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”
When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is taken out. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading.
68. The problem with the reading course as mentioned in the first paragraph is that ________.
A. it is one of the most difficult school courses B. students spend endless hours in reading
C. reading tasks are assigned with little guidance D. too much time is spent in teaching about reading

A. teachers can improve conditions at school for the students
B. teachers can enable students to develop their own way of reading
C. teachers can design the most efficient system for reading
D. teachers can make their teaching activities observable
70. The word “scrutiny” (Line 3, Para. 3) most probably means “________”.
A. request B. examination C. control D. damage
71. According to the passage, learning to read will no longer be a difficult task when ________.

C. teaching helps children in the search for knowledge
D. reading enriches children’s experience

Baekeland and Hartmann report that the “short sleepers” had been more or less average in their sleep needs until the men were in their teens. But at about age 15 or so, the men began cutting down their nightly sleep time because of pressures from school, work, and other activities. These men tended to consider their nightly periods unnecessary in their daily routines( 常规性工作)
In general, these “short sleeps” appeared ambitious, active, energetic, cheerful in their opinions, and very sure about their career choices. They often held several jobs at once, or work full-or part-time while going to school. And many of them had a strong urge to appear “normal” or “acceptable” to their friends and associates.
When asked to recall their dreams, the “short sleepers” did poorly. More than this, they seemed to prefer not remembering. In similar fashion, their usual way of dealing with psychological problems was to deny that the problem existed, and then to keep busy in the hope that the trouble would go away.
The sleep patterns of the “short sleepers” were similar to, but less extreme than, sleep patterns shown by many mental(精神的)patients regarded as manic(疯人).
The “long sleepers” were quite different indeed. Baekeland and Hartmann report that these young men had been lengthy sleeps since childhood. They seemed to enjoy their sleep, protected it, and were quite concerned when they were occasionally taken away from their desired 9 hours of nightly bed rest. They tended to recall their dreams much better than did the “short sleepers.”
Many of the “long sleepers” were shy, anxious, introverted (内向), inhibited (压抑), passive, and unsure of themselves (particularly in social situations). Several openly states that sleep was an escape from their daily problems.
72. According to the report,______.
  A. many short sleepers need less sleep by nature
  B. many short sleepers are forced to reduce their nightly sleep time because they want to make money
  C. long sleepers sleep a longer period of time during the day
  D. many long sleepers preserve their sleeping habit formed during their childhood
73. Many “short sleepers” are likely to hold the view that _____.
  A. sleep is an escape from the reality
  B. sleep interferes with their sound judgement
  C. sleep is the least expensive item on their routine program
  D. sleep is the best way to deal with psychological troubles
74. It is stated in the third paragraph that short sleepers _____.
  A. are eager to remember
  B. often ignore the problem that short sleep causes
  C. do not know how to relax properly
  D. are more unlikely to run into mental problems.
75. Which of the following is not included in the passage?
  A. If one doesn’t have enough sleep, his memory is weakened
  B. The sleep patterns of short sleepers are exactly the same as those shown by many mental patients
  C. Long and short sleepers differ in their attitudes towards sleep
D. Short sleepers appear energetic

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always making new words and we should be able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may really knows where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham (火腿)? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg.
They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some American saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We came from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of the beef like what the man from Hamburg ate and sold in many countries around the world.

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn buy being corrected all the time; if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle – compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher. Let him do it himself. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such tiring work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let’s end all this nonsense of grades, exams, marks. Let us throw them all out, and let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.

The weather has much to do with our life. For one thing, our crops depend on it. They will suffer if it is too dry or too wet. So men have long hoped to find a way to get control of it. But their efforts have up to now produced little results.
Though it is true that no one can change the weather, nor can anybody completely control it. We have learned many things about it from experience and through study. We have found that certain signs appear when there is going to be any big change in the weather. If we read the signs correctly, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called “weather forecast”.
People in all countries have for many years studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasts. The following are some of their findings.
Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water vapour, which shows that rain will probably come.
When distant sounds, such as the noise from far-off trains, are heard very clear, then wet and stormy weather is on the way.
If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that it will clear up and become fine. Such rainbows always come in the evening. However if a rainbow appears in the morning, then you may take it that rainy weather will come. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fair weather will probably continue.
And then many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather. Their joints(关节) or their old wounds ache, which always tells them it is going to rain.
Most of the above sayings have been made by people who have used their eyes and brains, and they have proved to be very useful in forecasting the weather.
68. The weather _____.
A. has nothing to do with our life B. has something to do with our life
C. is connected with our life very closely D. is difficult for us to forecast

It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No, I am not. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lost their charm. So who dares to neglect (give little attention) dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their minds through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called “aunt” or “granny” can still maintain (continue) her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart, great courage, concern for others, etc.
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real.
Reading and learning are the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and looks.

One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them . We always felt better when she was around.
One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破)one of Dad’s shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, ”Bad girl,” she looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.
Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet, she went everywhere with us .People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she’d let anyone pet her. In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of a comet(彗星). When the fragment(碎片)landed in the southern part of the giant planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?
The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the Earth. The news has caused panic.
On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.
Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the Earth, but the north won’t escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.
Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs(恐龙)were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn’t survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?
61. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the author’s description of the disaster in 2094?
The whole mankind becomes extinct.
All the coastal cities in African are destroyed.
The whole world becomes extremely cold.
The visit of the comet results in wars.
62. Why does the author mention dinosaurs at the end of the passage?
A. Because they could only live in the warm climate.
B. Because they once dominated the Earth.
C. Because dinosaurs and humans never live in the same age.
D. Because their extinction indicates future disasters
63. In writing the passage, the author intends to __________.
A. give an accurate description of the possible disaster in the future
