At the end of eight grade, our class went to Washington, D.C. For a group of 14-year-olds, this was a big deal!
The first day was so tiring; we could hardly remember where we were and what we were seeing. The next morning, we were off to see monuments (纪念碑),starting with Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson. We walked along the paths through trees. Then the Wall came into view—the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
As I moved slowly closer to the Wall, I heard a bagpipe(风笛)in the distance, which seemed to show respect to the lives lost in the jungles of Vietnam .
We continued walking and felt surprised at the number of names carved in the black stone. I was determined to find a soldier with my last name, but my hunt was stopped when a man caught my eyes. He was kneeling(跪着) at the Wall, a single rose at his feet. His head was bowed and he was rubbing his fingers over one name. I thought how sad he was, and then moved on .
After a few minutes I found one with my last name, but my eyes returned to the kneeling man. He was still rubbing his fingers over the same name. He never knew I was watching him, lost in deep sorrow. It was time for me to leave the kneeling man and the Wall. On the way home, I couldn’t help thinking of the kneeling man and his sad face. I wasn’t sure of the effects of war before, but at that moment I realized how much that man suffered from losing his loved one. Maybe he was the only one of so many families who experienced the same .
I never knew the full effects of war until I saw that man. I only know about war from history classes. The kneeling man taught me more about war and the effects it has on people than any history book .
51.Which of the following makes the author feel the suffering that war brings to human beings?
A.The kneeling man. B.The sound of a bagpipe.
C.The number of names carved in the stone. D.The jungles of Vietnam.
52.The man continued to rub his fingers over the name probably because_____.
A.he found it covered with dust B.he missed the loved one who died in a war
C.he intened to remove it completely D.he recalled the fierce war he fought in
53.What did the author learn from the trip?
A.How fierce war is in history. B.How people remember those who died in wars.
C.What bad effects war had on many families. D.What we should do to prevent war.
54.According to the last paragraph, the author probably thinks that _____.
A. he should have studied history hard in class B. history books don’t tell readers the truth
C. there is more in history than books tell us D. the kneeling man should be a history teacher

Have you ever been to a wedding and simply loved the bride’s bouquet(花束)?More than likely some part of it was the Hawaiian Wedding Plant. This foreign houseplant can be enjoyed by anyone, not just brides. With a little proper attention and careful planning on location, this foreign houseplant, which is from Madagascar, can be brought into the home where it can become an interesting focus.
Caring for the Hawaiian Wedding Plant is not much different from caring for any other houseplants that may already be in your home. The only difference between this type of houseplant and others is the amount of the basic requirements that this foreign houseplant needs to survive and perform beautifully. During the growing season, this plant requires its wet soil, but when winter rolls around, this plant needs its soil to be kept drier.
Hawaiian Wedding Plants should also be potted in well-drained(排水)soil and placed in a location that receives full sun. That the soil must be kept wet does not mean that it should sit in water, so the soil must drain easily or this plant will not survive. Water the plant daily and feed this plant every two to three weeks with a little fertilizer(化肥) for acid-loving plants. Prune in early spring, even as early as February. If these needs are met, this plant will stay beautiful.
The most special feature of this foreign houseplant is its long lasting blooms(开花)combined with its unbelievable sweet smell. The Hawaiian Wedding Plant blooms the heaviest in the spring months, but has been known to bloom in any warm months, so do not be surprised to find blooms most time of the year except maybe in the dead of winter.
55.Why does the author mention wedding and bouquet in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce a Hawaiian wedding. B.To attract the readers’ interest in the passage.
C.To show the beauty of the flower. D.To teach the readers to choose proper bouquets.
56.The Hawaiian Wedding Plant comes from________.
A.Hawaii B.China C.Madagascar D.Alaska
57.Which of the following are the growing conditions of Hawaiian Wedding Plant?
a. Wet soil. b. Lots of fertilizer. c.Proper sunshine. d. Some acid.
A.a.c B.a. b C.b. c D.a. d
58.What does the underlined phrase?“in the dead of winter”in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.At the end of the winter. B.At the beginning of the winter.
C.In deadly condition in winter. D.In the coldest part of winter.

As a music teacher for twenty-seven years, I have always known that music touches the soul. It can break through all kinds of barriers(障碍) to reach students in a very special way. It can be the means for each child to find their light.
A few years ago, I was blessed with the opportunity to teach pre-school students one afternoon a week. One of my most memorable students was Vanessa. She was five years old, had difficulty walking, and could not speak. We mostly sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to sit on my lap. One of her favorite songs was John the Rabbit. It was a call and response song where I sang the call and the students clapped two times while singing the repeating phrase, “Oh, yes!” Vanessa liked to put her hands together with mine and clap with me. We performed that song during every class, Vanessa and I clapping together. She never said or sang a word.
One day late in the school year, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around, looked me in the eye, clapped her tiny hands two times and said the words “Oh, yes!” I opened my mouth and could not speak. Through music, we had made a connection.
Several years later, I came across Vanessa on the street in town. I stopped my car and waved to say hello. She waved back with a big smile on her face and then clapped her hands two times, mimicking(模仿) the song we had performed in our music class. This precious little girl, through her connection with music, left an impression on me that will last forever.
Every child has the ability to learn and grow. It is up to us educators to discover the way to reach each and every one of our students. We all must find each child’s light.

C.was the youngest in the class D.enjoyed the author’s classes
61.When Vanessa spoke the words“Oh, yes!”, the author felt________.
A.surprised B.happy C.frightened D.satisfied
62.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.The author has been in touch with Vanessa for several years.
B.Vanessa became as healthy as other children.
C.The song made a deep impression on Vanessa.
D.Being a good educator became Vanessa’s dream.

Think about what you had for lunch: Was it a hamburger? A chicken sandwich? Barbecue? What about vegetables? Would it surprise you to learn that what you eat can affect the whole planet?
It can—in a big way. New studies show how food and its production affect the globe and its warming climate. You’ve probably heard of global warming : The temperature is on the rise because humankind has been releasing (排放) amounts of gases into the atmosphere. One of these greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide(二氧化碳).
What does this have to do with food ? A big part of the carbon dioxide that we put in the atmosphere every year comes from the process of making and eating food. The production of meat contributes a lot of that carbon dioide. And much of meat’s contribution comes from beef , which is responsible for releasing even more warming gases into the atmosphere.
The process of making a hamburger ,for example, requires a lot of energy. A cow has to be fed and raised on farmland, and cow waste is a major source of methane (沼气) — an especially powerful greenhouse gas. The cow has to be killed. The meat has to be processed (加工) and shipped to a shop, which takes fuel . Most of the cow won’t even be used for meat that people eat. By the time a hamburger finally lands on a dinner plate, it has made a heavy effect on the environment.
We can reduce the production of global-warming gases by eating less beef .Other kinds of meat like pork and chicken do less harm to the environment—at least in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases released.
All kinds of meat are harder on the planet than vegetables. To grow and eat a poud of potatoes, for example, sends less than one-quarter pound of carbon dioxide into the air. So changing our diet to less meat and more vegetables, as it turns out, may do the world some good.
63.The questions asked in the first paragraph are used to _____.
A. show the author’s concern about food safety B. express the author’s puzzlement at what to eat
C. remind readers of something delicious to eat D. introduce the topic to be discussed in the passage
64.What is the bad news for meat-eaters?
A. Meat producing can cause global warming B. Most cows are raised not for people to eat
C. There is a lot of carbon dioxide in meat D. Animals begin to die off because of global warming

A.explain the importance of eating meat B.advise people to keep a balanced diet
C.encourage people to choose a greener diet D.introduce some healthy foods to people

It is reasonable to say that every teenager can be affected by peer pressure (从众心理) at some point. Every day, in any high school, peer pressure has a major influence over the behavior of teenagers. It can be as subtle (微妙的) as being persuaded to be late for class or as extreme as a dangerous drug. Whether subtle or extreme, peer pressure can have damaging, sometimes life changing, and even serious results.
“Teens don’t often consider the long-term results that some behavior can cause,” said Terri Price, a researcher. “Peer pressure can be very difficult to handle for many teens because of their fears of not fitting in”. Peer pressure has always been part of teen life, but teens experience it differently than their former generations did in the past. Sources of peer pressure have increased because of the Internet and other electronic communications.
Recognizing peer pressure can be as simple as noticing that you have been asked to do something that you are not comfortable with. “Listen to your instinct (直觉) , which is a sign for whether something is right or wrong. If it feels wrong, then most likely it is. ”says Price.
Teens are in a time of life when they are still discovering who they are. Many teens are influenced by peer pressure because of their insecurities (不安全感). This can make them helpless especially when their self-control is weak or they lack healthy support, causing them to take risky behavior or turn to unhealthy support.
Dealing with peer pressure is a topic of concern for teens. People can say, “Just say no,” but the truth is that the statement is easier said than done.
67.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to .
A.the Internet B.teen life C.peer pressure D.the fear of not fitting in
68.You can know whether a teen suffers peer pressure by watching .
A.whether he often surfs the Internet B.whether he can get security
C.whether it is subtle or extreme D.whether he feels comfortable with it
69.Why are teens easily influenced by peer pressure?
A.Because they don’t have the feeling of safety.
B.Because they are afraid of fitting in or being accepted.
C.Because they need support for their health.
D.Because they have nobody to turn to when in trouble.
70.According to the passage, we can know that dealing with peer pressure is
A.easy B.hard C.a new topic D.an impossible task

How I Turned to Be Optimistic
I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then . I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.
I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see-the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost-having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to "the hard times".
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with Immigration officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.
From my experiences I have learned one important rule: almost all common troubles eventually go away! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up , and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

For Chinese students the end of their senior year is filled with studying and stress as they prepare for the college entrance exams in June. But for American high school seniors the experience couldn't be more different. The end of senior year is a celebration of their time in high school and involves parties, games and fun.
Senioritis(高年级倦怠症) is a commonly used expression. It means seniors have a disease which makes them unable to do work. This starts in April when seniors find out whether they have been accepted to university.
Unwilling to do school work, seniors have plenty of other activities to focus on. Many schools have a "Senior Show", in which only seniors are allowed to perform. Some seniors sing or dance but many of them perform skits (滑稽短剧), where they make fun of their favorite teachers or their friends. For example, a group of boys may dress up and imitate(模仿) a group of their girl friends. It is all very light-hearted. The "Senior Show" is usually a part of Senior Week, which is a week specifically dedicated (专用的) to seniors. During this week, seniors usually get academic or athletic awards they have won over their high school careers. The seniors also vote for one of their male and female classmates who they believe is the best-looking or funniest or most involved, etc. These are then published in the yearbook.
The yearbook is an important part of high school for seniors. It is usually dedicated to them and has all their pictures and some words from them in it. Then seniors go around and get it signed by their friends so they can always remember their time together.
Of course during all of this time, seniors are preparing for the Senior Prom(正式舞会), which is an important moment in American culture. It is the most important dance in a young American's life.

While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain puzzled over how to deal with another alcohol related danger: drunken pedestrians(行人).
Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are intoxicated more frequently, and with higher blood alcohol levels, than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents, various studies have shown. Forty percent of adult pedestrians involved in fatal crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least 0.10, which by law in many states signifies intoxication(醉酒), compared to only 25 percent of drivers in deadly accidents, according to recent federal data.
Some types of pedestrian accidents have been declining nationally, especially those involving children, but the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2,500 a year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in U.S. traffic accidents is at least 7,000, or one of every seven highway accidents resulting in death.
“We’re dealing here, we think, with a very severe drinking problem that leads to a severe highway safety problem,” said Richard Bloomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc, in Norwalk, Coon.
Bloomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual meeting of the Research council’s Transportation Research Board(TRB) in Washington in January.
Pedestrian accidents have not received enough attention in the past, according to Kay Culprits, who chairs the board’s committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits, she said, and researchers have been confused about how to prevent disasters.
56. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Traffic Safety. B. Drunken Drivers.
C. Drunken Pedestrian Accidents. D. A Severe Highway Safety problem.
57. Among the causes of walkers’ accidents, the most serious problem is______ .
A. long delays in traffic signals that may make people cross streets without paying attention to traffic rules
B. alcohol
C. a lack of adult keeping eyes on many children involved in accidents
D. former drunken drivers whose licenses are not allowed to use for a time
58. According to recent federal data, drunken drivers with an over 0.10 blood alcohol level in deadly accidents______ .
A. make up one seventh of highway accidents B. are 2,500 a year
C. are at least 7,000 in US traffic accidents
D. are 15 percent less than drunken adult walkers with the same level
59. According to the passage, what is Bloomberg?
A. A researcher. B. A specialist in traffic safety.
C. A clerk of a consulting company. D. A government official

The unquestioned role of a student is to learn as much as possible through whatever means it takes to acquire knowledge. Teachers and professors are human beings and are therefore not perfect. No one knows the correct answer to every question even when you limit the questions to a certain field of study. Having certain skepticism (质疑) about what they are being taught can help students to make the teachers even better by correcting mistakes and misinformation.
Students certainly have a huge role in their own abilities to learn. Teachers should act more as guides along the way rather than try to force each student to learn. The best teachers in the world cannot teach an unmotivated student. If the teacher, for whatever reason, cannot motivate the student, then the student must somehow find a way to motivate himself or herself.
One method of doing this is by becoming an active rather than a passive student. The more the student involves himself or herself in the act of studying, the better he or she can learn. One of the best ways to become more active is simply to ask the teacher or professor questions. Students who passively sit in a classroom and take everything that the teacher says for granted are not fully using their mental capacities to learn.
Better education comes from teachers who are able to get their students to think about a subject rather than merely absorb a certain amount of information. Having a healthy skepticism can improve a student's ability to both think and absorb knowledge in a learning situation.
Teachers are human beings and no one is one hundred percent right all of the time, even in a classroom situation. Perhaps a teacher would simply unconsciously say the wrong word or pass on some misinformation that the teacher truly believed was correct. A student's question could prevent an entire classroom from becoming confused or misinformed.
There is of course a fine balance between a student having a healthy skepticism, and just being a downright skeptic. But with the proper attitude toward learning and a little skepticism, both the students and teachers can improve upon the learning process and maximize learning efficiency.
60. Which of the following is the author's main argument?
A. Passive learning results from passive teaching in class.
B. A student's ability plays a huge role in the learning process.
C. A healthy skepticism fully depends on students' motivation and ability.
D. A healthy skepticism and proper attitude contribute to effective learning.
61. Being passive learners, the students _______________.
A. use little of their mental ability while studying
B. seldom involve themselves completely in learning
C. can hardly tell the right from the wrong in class
D. simply ask their teachers questions without thinking
62. According to the passage, a good teacher should _________.
A. help the unmotivated students patiently B. instruct students in the learning process
C. make no mistakes in the teaching process D. answer all the questions raised by students

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far, the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after wars.
They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. “Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry(精神病学)at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve(减轻)a lot of that suffering.”
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us avoid the mistakes in the past. “All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I am not sure we’d want to wipe those memories out.” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.
63.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. People often suffer from bad memories. B. American researchers are trying to develop a pill.
C. Forget bad memories , and be happy. D. The research has caused a heated argument.
64.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to “_____”.
A. the new drug B. the research into the drug
C. the bad memory D. the chemical in the drug
65.Which of the following is NOT the opinion of the opponents(反对者)?
A. Our memories give us our identity.
B. The memories help human avoid mistakes of the past.
C. The drug should be used in only very serious cases.
D. People may not be sure whether they want to wipe the memories out.

“I have no desire to write a story about girls! I know nothing about girls,” Franchisees Alcott told her publisher, Mr. Niles. But she needed money badly. She seemed to be the only one in her family who could make money. Niles had asked her to write about something she knew, instead of the romantic adventure stories she had been writing. “So I work hard,” Alcott wrote, “though I don’t enjoy this sort of thing.” It was 1867, and the horrible Civil War was over. Now Alcott could devote her energy to making money.
Alcott wrote a simple story of life in her family, their pillow fights on Saturday nights and the amateur (业余的) plays they performed. “Our experiences may prove interesting, though I doubt it.” (“Good joke,” she wrote years later.) Her book described her days growing up with four sisters in a family that had no money. She sketched (勾画) a loving mother who took time to be interested in each child, and she told of the death of a beloved sister. She sketched her family and friends in her book Little Women. Finally, in July of 1868, she finished writing. With a sigh and a headache, she sent off all 102 handwritten pages of her book.
Niles thought the book was dull, and so did Alcott. But when she received her copies of the book, Alcott thought it seemed better than expected. “Not a bit sensational,” she wrote, “but simple and true. We really lived most of it.” Niles asked some girls to read Little Women, and they loved it.
In three months, all the copies of Little Women had sold. It was already time to print more books! Niles thought he could sell three or four hundred more copies. “An honest publisher and a lucky author made a dull book into a golden egg for an ugly duckling,” Alcott wrote in 1885. Many Americans are turning to Japan, they think, a country of high academic achievement and economic success, for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little emphasis (强调) is put on academic instruction. In one survey, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education.Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents (调查对象) listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese preschools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as determination, concentration, and the ability to work as a member of a group. The huge majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.
Like in America, there is diversity (多样性) in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated(一流的)schools and universities.Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for stress and anxiety in some Japanese kindergartens.
60. We learn from the first paragraph that many Americans believe ____________.

A. They can do better in their future studies.
B. They can make more group experience grow there.
C. They can be self-centered when they grow up.
D. They can have better chances of getting a first-rate education.
63. Free play has been introduced in some Japanese kindergartens in order to____________.

I have been teaching in the United States for three semesters. During this time, I have been very impressed with the hardworking American students. Tuition fee (学费) in American universities are pretty expensive. Most American students receive little, if any, financial support. As a result, they have to work hard to pay for their tuition and other basic expenses. Tertiary (高等) education is a necessity in today’s workforce. Young people with higher education are rewarded with a good career and better salary. So how do American students support themselves?
All my American students have to work to pay for their tuition. For this reason, most universities provide limited jobs for students who need economic help. They also help students search for jobs in the community. I have been touched to see some students are so worn out from their jobs that they doze in my classroom. In addition to taking part-time jobs, students are also expected to take part in various social and sporting activities and, in fact, those who do not take part in are often looked down upon by their peers.
A number of American university students are married with families, or are single parents. These students are faced with the additional burden of raising a family. They have to spend much time, money and energy caring for their children and family. Most American university professors are strict. They test students on every unit in their course, in addition to mid-term and final exams in each semester. A lack of preparation by students may result in their failure. This means the loss of a lot of money and possibly future employment opportunities for these students. For this reason, many American students will study or stay up all night before an exam, in an effort to pass.
In contrast, Chinese students have a much easier time, because most Chinese parents pay for their kids’ tertiary education. Moreover, Chinese students do not need to worry about raising children or maintaining a family. So, Chinese students have no reason for not studying hard and achieving good marks.
64. Which of the following is not the difficulty American students have to face?
A. They have to work hard to pay for the high tuition fee.
B. Many American students have a burden of a family.
C. They need a better education to get a best job.
D. They have to pass strict tests to complete their education.
65. Which of the following statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. American students have no time to think of physical exercise.
B. Sporting activities are popular among American students.
C. American students should take part in various social activities.
D. Those who don’t participate in social and sporting activities are usually unpopular with their peers.
66. Compared with American students, Chinese university students __________.
A. have no difficulty in raising a family B. live an easy life in universities
C. don’t have to take full-time jobs D. have more duty to make greater progress
67. This passage mainly deals with __________.
A. part-time jobs chosen by American students B. the high fees of American universities
C. difficult lives American students have to face D. different opinions on American universities

"Time," says the proverb, "is money". This means that every moment well spent may put some money into our pockets. If our time is usefully employed, it will either turn out some useful and important piece of work which will fetch its price in the market, or it will add to our experience and increase our abilities so as to enable us to earn money when the proper opportunity comes. Let those, who think nothing of wasting time, remember this.
Our life is nothing more than our time. To kill time is therefore a form of suicide. We are shocked when we think of death, and we spare no pains, no trouble, and no expense to preserve life.
But we often care little about the loss of an hour or of a day, forgetting that our life is the sum of the days and of the hours we live. A wasted day or an hour is therefore so much life missing. Our life is a brief span measuring some seventy or eighty years in all. But nearly one third of this has to be spent in sleep; some years have to be spent over our meals; some in making journeys on land and voyages by sea; some in merry-making; some in watching over the sick-beds of our nearest and dearest relatives. Now if all these years were to be deducted (扣除) from the term over which our life extends, we shall find about twenty or thirty years for active work. Whoever remembers this can never willingly waste a single moment of his life. All time is precious; but the time of our childhood and of our youth is more precious than any other part of our existence. For those are the periods when alone we can gain knowledge and develop our abilities.
If we allow these morning hours of life to slip away, we shall never be able to make up the loss. Just as money laid out for interest doubles or trebles (成三倍) itself in time, so the precious hours of childhood and youth, if properly used, will bring lots of advantages for us.

A Chinese couple tried to name their baby“@”,saying the character best represents their love for the child, according to an official trying to whip the national language into shape. The unusual name stands out especially in Mandarin(普通话),which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke(多笔画的)characters to represent words. “The whole world uses it to write emails, and translated into Chinese it meanshe A. None ‘love him’”, the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the
State Language Commission Li Yuming.
While the @ symbol is familiar to Chinese email users, they often use the English word “at” to sound it out. With a drawn-out “t”, this sounds something like “ai ta”, or “love him”, to Mandarin speakers. Li says the name is an extreme example of people's increasingly adventurous approach to Mandarin, as commercialization and the Internet break down conventions(习俗).
Another couple tried to give their child a name that in English sounds like “King Osrina”.
Li did not say if officials accepted the“@”name. But earlier this year the government announced a ban on names using Arabic numerals and foreign languages. Sixty million Chinese face the problem that their names use ancient characters so uncommon that computers cannot recognize them and even fluent speakers are left scratching their heads, said Li, according to a transcript on the government website. One of them is the former Premier Zhu Rongji, whose name has a rare “rong” character that gives newspaper editors headaches.
56. Why did the Chinese couple try to name their baby“@”?
A. Because they wanted their baby to have a special narne.
B. Because they wanted their baby to haw an international name.
C. Because the @ symbol is familiar to email users all over the world.
D. Because die@symbol sounds something like “ai ta”,which means “love him” in Chinese.
57. It can be inferred that .
A. Li Yuming is in favor of the baby's name
B. many Chinese people use Arabic numerals in their names
C. a majority of the Chinese people are having longer names
D. there is little possibility for the“@”name to be officially accepted
58. The underlined part in the passage probably means“ ”.
A. even native speakers find it hard to accept these strange names

C. even those who are expert at Chinese can't recognize these characters
D. even those who are expert at Chinese find it hard to accept these names

A few days ago I asked my sons' governess(家庭女教师)Julia to come into my study. “Be seated,Julia,”I said,“Let's settle our accounts. I guess you most likely need some money, but maybe you're too polite to mention it. Now then,we agreed on thirty dollars a month...”
“Forty.”
“No,thirty. I made a note of it. I always pay our governess thirty. Well,um,you've been here for two months,so...”
Two months and five days.”
Exactly two months. I made a special note of it. That means you have sixty dollars coming to you. Take nine Sundays off... you know you didn't work with Tom on Sundays, you only took walks. And three holidays... ”Julia was biting her fingernail nervously, her face red, but, not a word.
“Three holidays, therefore take twelve dollars off your pay. Four days Tom was sick and there were no lessons,as you were occupied only with Dick. Three days you had a toothache and my wife gave you permission not to work after lunch. Twelve and seven makes nineteen. Take nineteen off... that 1eaves,hmm... forty-one dollars. Correct?”
Julia's left eye reddened with tears welling up. Her chin trembled, and she coughed nervously and blew her nose, but still not a word.
“Around New Year’s Day you broke a teacup and a saucer;take two dollars off your pay. The cup cost more, because it was a treasure of the family, but forget it. When didn't I take a loss! Then, due to your neglect(疏忽),Tom climbed a tree and tore his jacket;take away ten. Also due to your carelessness the maid stole Dick's shoes. You ought to watch everything! You get paid for it. So,that means five more dollars off. The tenth of January I gave you ten dollars”.
“You didn't.” sobbed Julia.
“But I made a note of it.”
“Well... if you say so.”
“Take twenty-seven from forty-one, and that leaves fourteen.”
Both her eyes were filled with tears. Beads of sweat stood on the thin pretty little nose. Poor girl!
“Only once was I given any money,”she whispered, her voice trembling,“and that was by your wife. Three dollars, nothing more.”
“Real1y? You see now,and I didn't know that!Take three from fourteen and it leaves eleven. Here’s your money,my dear.Three, three, three, one and one. Here it is!”
I handed her eleven dollars. She took them and pocketed them.
“Merci(Thanks),”she whispered.
I jumped to my feet and started pacing the floor. I was overcome with anger. “For what, this merci”? I asked.
“For the money”.
“But you know I’ve cheated you—— robbed you!”I have actually stolen from you! Why this “merci?”
“In my other places they didn’t give me anything at all.”
“They didn’t give you anything? No wonder! 1 played a little joke on you,a cruel lesson, just to teach you…I'm going to give you all the eighty dollars! Here they are in the envelope all ready for you…Is it really possible to be so spineless(懦弱)? Why didn't you protest? Why were you silent? Is it possible in this world to be without teeth and laws(爪)—— to be such a fool?''
Embarrassed, she smiled. And I could read her expression,“It is possible”.

Good tool design is important in the prevention of overuse injuries. Well-designed tools and equipment will require less force to operate them and prevent awkward (别扭的) hand positions. They will allow the worker to keep the elbows (肘) next to the body to prevent damage to the shoulder and arm.
Overuse injuries can therefore be prevented or reduced if the employer provides, and workers use:
power tools rather than having to use muscle power
tools with specially designed handles(把手) that allow the wrist (手腕) to keep straight (see the figures图形). This means that hands and wrists are kept in the same position as they would be if they were hanging relaxed at a person’s side
tools with handles that can be held comfortably by the whole hand. This means having a selection of sizes---remember that tools that provide a comfortable firm hold for a person with a very large hand may be awkward for someone with a very small hand. This is a particularly important consideration for women who may use tools originally designed for men
tools that do not press fingers (or flesh )between the handles, and whose handles do not have sharp edges or a small surface area.

As skies are filled with millions of migrating(迁徙)birds, European scientists say the seasonal wonder appears to be strange: The fatter the bird, the better it flies.
The results of their study led to a theory opposite to a central one of aerodynamics(空气动力学),which say that the power needed to fly increased with weight.
For birds, obviously, the cost of flying with heavy fat is much smaller than we used to think. Researchers found that red knot wading birds double their normal body weight of 100 grams before making their twice-a-year nonstop flight between the British Isles and the Russian Arctic. Distance: 5,000 kilometers.
Another study in the magazine Nature measured the advantage of flying in an aerodynamic group which allows birds to save energy by flying smoothly and quietly in the lead bird’s air stream.
Flying in groups, their heart rates were 14.5 percent lower than flying alone, according to Henri, a French scientist. The findings help explain how birds complete difficult migrations. Researchers had thought that thinner, stronger birds would have the best chance to survive.
The first study suggests that building up fat to be burnt as fuel during the migration is worth more than the energy it bakes to carry the additional weight.
In the study, researchers said their team studied the birds flown at different body weights during 28 simulated(模拟的)flights. They forced a small amount of special water into the birds’ bodies so that they could measure the amount of energy burnt during the flight.
64. A red knot wading bird of 100 grams will probably weigh _________ before making its nonstop migrating flight.
A. 50 grams B. 100 grams C. 150 grams D. 200 grams

A recent survey of teachers found that an unhealthy passion with celebrity(名人) culture is having a negative effect on British students’ studies and it discovered that celebrity couple, the Beckhams, are the favorites among most students. Many students are ignoring building their own careers to seek a chance at fame instead, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) survey found.
Almost two-thirds of teachers said sports stars were the type of celebrity many pupils wanted to follow while more than half of students wanted to be pop stars.
The survey said the celebrities that students aspired to mostly were David and Victoria Beckham who live in Los Angeles now. Soccer player Beckham is on the top of the survey while in second place, with almost a third of the survey’s votes, was his 33-year-old pop star wife.
Almost half of the 300 teachers surveyed said pupils tried to look like or behave like the celebrities they most admired, with some girls even dressing "unsuitably".
"We are not surprised about the influence of celebrity culture in schools —it reflects the current media passion with celebrities and the effect of celebrity culture on society as a whole," ATL general secretary Mary Bousted said in a statement.
"Celebrities can have a positive effect on pupils. They can raise pupils’ aspirations and desires for the future. However, celebrity culture can spread the idea that celebrity status is the greatest achievement and reinforce the belief that other career choices are not as valua
