A list of Benjamin Franklin's inventions reveals a man of many talents and interests. His natural curiosity about things and the way they work made him try to find ways to make them work better.
Ben had poor vision and needed glasses to read.He got tired of constantly taking them off and putting them back on, so he decided to figure out how his glasses would let him see both near and far.He had two pairs of glasses cut in half and put half of each lens (镜片) in a single frame.Today, we call them bifocals (双光眼镜).
Everyone knows the story of Ben's famous kite flight.Although he made important discoveries and advancements, Ben did not “invent” the electricity. He did, however, invent the lightning rod which protects buildings and ships from lightning.
In colonial America, most people warmed their homes by building a fire in a fireplace even though it was dangerous and used a lot of wood.Ben figured that there had to be a better way.His invention of an iron furnace stove allowed people to warm their homes less dangerously and with less wood. The furnace stove that he invented is called the Franklin Stove.Interestingly enough, Ben also established the first fire company and the first fire insurance company in order to help people live more safely.
As a postmaster, Ben had to figure out routes for delivering the mail.He went out riding in his carriage to measure the routes and needed a way to keep track of the distance. He invented a simple odometer (里程表) and attached it to his carriage.
Later, other famous inventors, like Tomas A.Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, followed in Ben's footsteps by trying to find ways to help people live better.

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, the son of John and Elizabeth Dickens. John Dickens was a clerk in the Naval Pay Office. He had a poor head for finances, and finally found himself imprisoned for debt.
When the family paid off the debt and his father was set free, the twelve-year-old Dickens, already hurt by the experience, was further wounded by his mother's insistence that he continued to work at Warren's Blacking Factory.
His father, however, rescued him from that fate (命运), and between 1824 and 1827 Dickens was a day pupil at a school in London. At fifteen, he found employment as an office boy at a lawyer's, while he studied shorthand (速记法) at night. His work memories at the Blacking Factory entered his mind repeatedly all of his life — he spoke of it only to his wife and to his closest friend, John Forster — but the dark secret became a source of creative energy with the themes of alienation (离间) and betrayal which would appear mostly in David Copperfield and in Great Expectations.
In 1829 he became a reporter at Doctor's Commons Courts, and in 1830 he met and fell in love with Maria Beadnell, the daughter of a banker. By 1832 he had become a very successful reporter of Parliamentary debates in the House of Commons, and began work as a reporter for a newspaper.
In 1833 his relationship with Maria Beadnell ended, probably because her parents did not think him a good match. In the same year his first published story appeared, and was followed, very shortly thereafter, by a number of other stories and sketches (短剧). In 1834, still a newspaper reporter, he adopted the soon-to-be-famous penname “Boz”. His poor father, who was the original of Mr Micawber in David Copperfield, was once again arrested for debt, and Charles was forced to come to his aid. Later in his life both of his parents and his brothers were frequently after him for money.

If you want to walk in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest figures, then go to Oxford. Many of Oxford's 38 colleges are open to the public year-round. Here are a few of the colleges worth visiting and some famous people who have studied there:
Christ Church College
Long before it became known as a location for the Harry Potter films, Christ Church was the college where Albert Einstein, author Charles Dodgson who wrote Alice in Wonderland, and 13 British prime ministers studied. In the largest and one of the most popular colleges, you'll want to see the paintings in the 16th-century Great Hall, historic Christ Church Cathedral — England's smallest cathedral, and listen to Great Tom, the seven-ton tower bell.
Magdalen College
Many consider Magdalen to be one of the most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. This is where author Oscar Wilde read “Greats” (a classics course) in the 1870s, and where actor, comedian and pianist Dudley Moore earned a scholarship to study music. See the medieval (中世纪的) church with its 15th-century tower. Opposite the college is the beautiful Botanic Garden — Britain's oldest — founded in 1621.
Merton College
Founded in 1264, Merton has the oldest medieval library in use. J.R.R. Tolkien is said to have spent many hours here writing The Lord of the Rings. One of the college's treasures is an astrolabe (星盘), thought to have belonged to Chaucer. The college has “the most amazing” collection of medieval coloured glass in Oxford.
Bodleian Library
The Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford, is the largest university library in the UK. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and in Britain is second in size only to the British Library. It holds more than 9 million printed items on 189 km of shelving and seats up to 2,500 readers. The users of the library here include five kings, 40 Nobel Prize winners, 25 British prime ministers and countless famous writers.

The London Eye, which is 450 feet in height above the Thames River, is the world's biggest spinning structure. It is one hundred feet taller than Big Ben, and weighs 1,600 tons. It was built to celebrate the year 2,000. Maybe building such a big spinning structure suggested that people longed for bigger and better things in the future.
Why did people think of building the London Eye? In fact it was inspired by great structures of the past like the very first observation wheel built for the Chicago World Expo of 1893. It's twice the size of the wheel, but three times lighter, and much more comfortable. The London Eye is keeping natives and visitors entertained and awed (敬畏的).
In London Eye, there are 32 capsules (舱). Each of the capsules can hold up to 25 people. And they're air conditioned in summer, heated in winter. From these capsules the visitors can see the most beautiful views of London.
It was difficult to assemble (安装) and put a wheel of this size. And it required new technology and a lot of imagination. The parts of London Eye were sent_up the Thames River, and the wheel was assembled on temporary (暂时的) platforms on the river. Lifting it into an upright position was a major challenge. Free energy is everywhere around us. There are many ways to make and collect energy from various sources like sun, wind and water. People also realize that everyday stuff can be a source of energy too. For example, riding a bike, running or just walking, etc. We simply have to change our way of thinking if we want to change the world.
So comes the idea of solar roadways. Are they the road of future? Why use roads just for driving and collecting tolls (过路费)? Why don't we use them for collecting energy?
The US Department of Transportation recently awarded $100,000 to Solar Roadways to build the first ever Solar Road Panel. So how do these future roads work?
The Solar Road Panels will contain embedded (嵌入的) LEDs which “paint” the road lines from beneath to provide safer nighttime driving as well as to give drivers instant instructions such as detour (绕行) ahead. The road will be able to sense wildlife on the road and can warn drivers to “slow down”. There will also be embedded heating elements in the surface to prevent snow and ice buildup, providing safer winter driving.
Replacing asphalt (沥青) roads and parking lots with Solar Roadway Panels will be a major step toward stopping climate change. Fully electric vehicles will be able to recharge along the roadway and in parking lots, finally making electric cars practical for long trips.
We just can't wait to see more of these roads all over the world in the near future.

These are some ideas that some people came up with about what the life will be like in the year 2500.
We will have established a base on the moon. School kids can take field trips to the moon weekly. We will have found cures (疗法) for AIDS and cancer. The war will have ended and peace flows freely through the land. Kids will learn more and be smarter than ever before! History will be the main subject at school. Cafeteria (自助餐厅) food will be delicious! You just walk up to a machine, stick out your tongue, and it will scan your taste buds (味蕾) to see what you want to eat.
— Kristen
Here I am in the wonderful year of 2500 and life is so easy. I work in a pet store and it is so hard! I have to wake up at midnight every day and fly my car to the store. It takes so long to get there. It takes me 20 seconds to get to the store in Mississippi from my home in Florida! At work, I have to push 5 buttons and then I go home. It takes 2 seconds and that is like forever.
— Morgan
In the year 2500, I think we will have invented cars that run on things we don't need like garbage. Tail gas will smell like whatever you like such as chocolate. I also predict that buildings will be able to go into a different dimension (维) so your car won't hit them. The cars in 2500 don't fly, for we haven't got that technology yet, but they can hover up to seven feet. These cars are made for speed!
— Carly
Instead of cars, we may have hovering devices that float around. We could also have electric cars instead of gas-powered cars. Food might be more healthy. What I believe is that the environment will change the most. The environmental changes will also determine many other changes. If more people try to help the environment, then perhaps in 2500 we will have more forests and wildlife. If people won't help the environment, then we will have no forests and little wildlife left.
— Roberta
5.According to Kristen, what will happen in 2500?
A.English will be the main subject at school.
B.Students can go to the moon every week.
C.Cafeteria will replace other restaurants.
D.AIDS and cancer will disappear.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据文章中克里斯滕所说的话“School kids can take field trips to the moon weekly.”可知,B项为正确答案。

________.

C.important D.easy
解析:选D 推理判断题。文章中摩根对他工作的具体描述使用的是反语,他真实的意思是“这份工作太轻松了”。他的第一句话和最后一句是对该意思的提示,故选D项。
7.Who mainly tells the reader of the cars in 2500?
A.Kristen. B.Morgan.
C.Carly. D.Roberta.

8.Roberta thinks that in 2500 ________.
A.the environment will have changed a lot
B.there will be more wildlife and forests

Print newspapers will soon be part of our history. While the Internet and some other media are rapidly developing in a world where people's lifestyles are more than busy, there seems to be less time for newspapers. The newspaper industry, in countries where newspapers dominated as a medium for many years, is now struggling more than ever.
Newspaper circulation (发行量) has been declining since over 20 years ago. “I foresee, in one or two generations, a society where you will access a newspaper only from a hand?held screen,” warns William Papatassos, Blue & Gold advisor.
The Internet attracts most of the younger people. The problem of newspapers is called “18 to 35?year?old people”. This group of people is not willing to replace the regular readers who grew up using this traditional medium. And they like to surf the Internet to search for information. Some experts predict that by 2043, in America and many other countries, newspapers will no longer exist.
Fortunately, print newspapers still exist and offer advantages to readers. “Newspapers encourage more thoughtful thinking,” says journalist Kathleen Jasonides.“At this point, there is still room for it. Some people do not like reading shortened articles online.”
But some newspapers including the Blue & Gold provide articles of online editions (版本), bearing in mind the increasing use of the Internet. However, the great variety of specialized information offered by many other websites prevents these online editions from developing. In addition, the newspaper industry has kept its best journalists for print; therefore the quality of articles is not the same.
The only thing that we know for sure is that print newspapers are facing a crisis due to lack of revenues (收入) from traditional advertising and the appearance of the Internet.

The best reporters I know are bright, persistent, honest, curious and courageous. If you asked them to explain their success, this is what they might say:
Helen: A good reporter is a generalist, able to deal with a number of topics and talk with a variety of people. He or she can see the unusual, the ironic (讽刺的) in the everyday. She can think through all the possibilities and organize a large amount of information to find the important parts.
Jack: A good reporter is quick. Once he is assigned a story, he goes after it. He makes the calls and keeps trying if he doesn't make contact. Besides, a good reporter is curious. He or she takes pleasure in the new, and in the old, in the history or previous examples that got us where we are. He enjoys reading and appreciates the details.
Susan: A good reporter is pleasant. She adopts a friendly nature with those she meets. She is a grateful guest, with a belief in the basic goodness of people. She conveys to those she meets that she is tolerant of them and their ideas, even though she doesn't like them or what they stand for.
Tom: A good reporter is honest. He seeks the truth and acts independently. He does what he says he's going to do, and doesn't do anything he promised to avoid. He returns his calls, and he's willing to say no. He's obsessed with accuracy and double checks his facts with call?backs. He sees both sides to every issue.
Richard: As Jon Franklin, reporter, author and teacher, said, “Back when I first started, I thought intelligence was the most important attribute a reporter could have. I have since changed my mind. You do have to be intelligent, but the big thing is courage. Courage to open your mind and let the whole damned confusing world in. Courage to always be the ignorant one, on somebody else's turf. Courage to stand corrected. Courage to take criticism. Courage to grow with your experiences. Courage to accept what you don't understand. Most of all, courage to see what is there and not what you want to think is there.”

How can fire or hot things be a danger in the house? Matches, of course, are always dangerous in the hands of young children. A wind comes, sparks are blown on to the roof of a house, and the whole building may be burnt to the ground before you can even call the Fire Brigade. Kerosene lamps, too, can be very dangerous. Quite recently there was a bad accident in a village house. The mosquito net over a baby's bed was blown against a lamp and caught fire. The bedclothes and even the clothes of the baby were burnt before the fire was discovered.
Young children often reach up to a table to take a pot down by its handle. If the pot is full of boiling water, you can guess what will happen. Similarly, when a baby's bath is prepared, cold water should be put in first. If any hot water has to be used, it should be put into the bath after the cold water but not before it.
Many fireworks can lead to blindness and other injuries, especially those are pushed into bamboo sticks. Wooden spears or swords should be used only by children with sense enough not to injure other people.
Very young children often have to be watched very carefully. They put everything they find into their mouths to see whether it can be eaten. Medicines have to be put out of their reach. A pill or some ointment which might be harmless to a grown-up can be very harmful to a baby.
If there are stairs in your house, do not put a mat at the top of them unless you want to crash down the stairs on your shoulder or head. Make sure, too, that your mats do not have curly edges. These are dangerous for the very young and the very old: those who cannot see as well as we can. If there are any deep holes in or near your garden, see that they are filled in or properly covered up.
This gloomy list of the dangers in and near a house is not complete, but it is enough to remind you to be careful. If you want to take a risk, do it on the sports field or, when you are older, by serving your country in the Army.
