Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants (居民) of a country. If tourists cause too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country's economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination ( 目的) country and how tourism affects (影响 ) them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wellbeing (health and happiness) of local inhabitants.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country's economy can suffer.
On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities (设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.
Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers (阴沟) to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

A. use up a large amount of water B. weaken their economy
C. help establish (建立) their traditions D. help improve their life
) 5. The word "handle" in the last paragraph most probably means .

In ancient Greece the most famous festival for athletes was the Olympic Games. These games took their name from the religious (宗教信仰) centre of Olympus, in southern Greece. The Games were held every four years at the end of June. Athletes, judges and spectators came from all over the known world to watch and compete.
After a solemn (神圣的) opening ceremony, the first event was the four-horse chariot (战车) race. As many as forty chariots thundered round and round the stadium. Because of collisions (碰撞.) , and the strain of covering the nine-mile race, very few chariots ever finished the race. Winning it was a great honor. At the Olympic Games there were also races on foot, horse races, wrestling, boxing matches and the pentathlon.
"Pente" is Greek for five and "athlon" Greek for contest, the pentathlon was five different events combined. Competitors had to run, contest the long jump, throw the discus(铁饼)and the javelin 标枪) and wrestle (摔跤). The athlete who won three of the five events was the winner. I was very disappointed (失望的) not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday.' The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for the bus. By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip. So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again the next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there , however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.
( ) 11. The man learned that there would be a concert last Friday.
A. from his friends B. from one of his workmates
