Frederick Seidel, 73 years old, is one of the world’s most inspired and unusual poets. For more than 50 years, Seidel has been writing poems —poems about the cosmos(宇宙), motorcycles and growing old. Some of them are beautiful and fashionable. However, his difficult, troubling poems that may or may not have rhyme, or may or may not have an obvious meaning, still leave brave readers feeling the presence of a strange and brilliant mind. ???? "What I like best about his work is the completely unique way it manages to be inclusive (包罗万象的), bringing a vast range of themes and subjects and people into the poems, while managing to make them at the same time musically audacious (大胆的),"says Pulitzer Prize-winning poet C.K. Williams. ???? Wearing a jacket and slacks, no tie, Seidel is a casual, cultured man with a high forehead. He writes day and night, he says, and appears not to worry about who reads him. A recent nominee (被提名者) for the National Book Critics Circle Award, he didn’t attend the ceremony and didn’t bother writing a statement in case he won. ???? Though there is sometimes bad news in his works, whether the crash of the World Trade Center (WTC) or the failings of his own body, the man, who even spells his name "sui-Seidel", which has the same pronunciation with "suicidal"(自杀的), remains enthusiastic and grateful to be alive. "I’m quite satisfied with what’s going on now. I like the times I’m living in. In fact, it’s wonderful to be living through these decades," he says. ???? Seidel has read a lot of books and has made lots of friends, which makes his life meaningful and colorful. He not only reads Pound and T.S. Eliot, but gets to know them. He’s met a lot of people: from fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg to John F. Kennedy. ???? What’s more, he is very much aware of politics. "I very much enjoy politics," he says. "There have been a few blank periods when I was deprived (剥夺) of my pleasure ... But, for the most part, it’s very much a part of what I see as coloring the world."
68. According to the first two paragraphs, Seidel’s poems ______.
A. have obvious meanings
B. have beautiful rhymes
C. are unique and cover a wide range of topics ???? D. are difficult and bring him some trouble
69. What is Seidel’s attitude towards life? ???? A. Depressed. B. Positive. ???? C. Indifferent. D. Regretful.
70. The underlined part "bad news"(Paragraph 4) refers to ______.
A. the fact that he didn’t attend the National Book Critics Circle Award ceremony
B. the fact that he didn’t write a statement in case he won the award
C. the crash of the WTC or the failings of his own body ????D. the fact that he has tried to commit suicide
71. What can be inferred from the passage? ????A. The author thinks highly of Frederick Seidel.
B. Politics brings Seidel nothing but pleasure.
C. C.K. Williams has won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
D. Frederick Seidel is a cultured person but not easy-going. ???? ????E ????难度:★★★
When students are studying poetry, it’s very important for them to get a feel for the rhythms of poems —more so than for most pieces of prose(散文). This isn’t always easy in a second language, but listening to the poem read by a teacher, or to a professional recording, perhaps by the poet or an actor, can be very helpful. ???? With listening activities, students will need some kinds of preparations so as to become actively engaged. They might be asked to make predictions about the poem during a warm-up discussion, to compare rhyming couplets (韵律) they produced with the poet’s, or to identify stressed words and syllables. ???? You might also want to get your students to listen to recorded or live discussions about poems. This can take the form of a couple of teachers or a group of students giving their views on a poem, or of an interview with the poet. ???? Information gap activities are often very popular with students. They will help students take an active part in listening activities, and they attempt to fill out the blanks of the necessary information which has been left out deliberately. If it’s convenient for you to adopt the method, you might like to: ???? ◆divide your students into two, or even three groups. ???? ◆give each group a different cassette or CD, and a different task to work on. ???? ◆have them share with the class what they learned when they’ve finished. ???? Remember that your own enthusiasm is a key factor in any activity related to literature in the classroom. ???? Finally, don’t forget to encourage art for art’s sake. Listening for pleasure to poetry (or to anything else, for that matter) motivates students, and encourages them to master new vocabulary. Many good song lyrics (歌词) are a kind of poetry, and can be discussed accordingly in the classroom.
72. We learn from the passage that _______. ??? A. it’s hard for Chinese students to get a feel for the rhythms of English poems
B. listening to recordings is the best way to learn poems

b. Having a warm-up discussion.
c. Sharing one’s own work with the class.
d. Having an interview with the poet.

书面表达(One possible version)
Dear Bob, I was glad to hear from you. In your letter, you asked me why Chinese parents like educating their children using ancient poems. China, in its long history, has developed a variety of cultural forms, of which ancient poetry is the most famous. As you know, the poem is a form of rhythmic language, and poems often describe complex things in simple ways. These two characteristics especially appeal to children, who can learn and recite poetry without too much difficulty. Once a poem is memorized, it’s hard to forget. What’s more, poems are both emotional and imaginative, which again makes them appeal to children. For all these reasons, parents love to use poems to teach their children. Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
