There's a story told about an elderly lady in Arkansas. The state voted to increase welfare payments to the poor. Hoping for a tear-jerker story, a television interviewer went into the back hills where many welfare recipients lived. The old woman he chose to interview lived in a one-room shack(棚屋): cold in winter; hot in summer. Her bed was a few rough planks(厚板) nailed together, with a pine-needle mattress. A couple thin blankets, and a fireplace, did little to protect her from the cold.
Her furniture, a table and two chairs, were fashioned from the same rough wood as her bed. Some shelves held a few cans of food from the general store, a three mile walk down the road. Several jars of preserves and a few squash(南瓜类蔬菜) completed her larder(食品室). She had no fridge or freezer. The fireplace provided heat for cooking. With no phone or television her only connection with the outside world was an old radio that pulled in two or three local stations on a good day.
The old woman had one convenience, running water. A crystal clear stream flowed a short distance behind her home.
A small garden near her back door provided fresh vegetables during the summer, and some squash and turnips for the winter. A tidy flower garden brightened the front of her house. The television crew arrived and set up their big expensive cameras. Their mobile station broadcast pictures of the woman and the place she called home.
Eventually the interviewer asked the old woman, “If the government gave you $ 200 more each month, what would you do with it?”
Without hesitation the woman replied, “I'd give it to the poor.”36. A tear-jerker story is probably ________.

She had been in and out of our small, rural(乡下的) hospital several times. In spite of terminal(晚期的) cancer and resulting pain, she never failed to give the nurses a smile or a hug. Whenever her husband came to visit, she glowed(容光焕发). He was a nice man, very polite and as friendly as his wife.Daily, he brought her fresh flowers and a smile, then sat by her bed as they held hands and talked quietly. When the pain was too much and she cried or became confused, he hugged her gently in his arms and whispered until she rested. He spent every available moment at her bedside, giving her small sips of water and stroking her brow. Every night, before he left for home, he closed the door so they could spend time alone together. When he was gone, she was found sleeping peacefully with a smile on her lips.On this night, however, things were different. At about midnight she passed away with her husband still holding her hand. The nurses consoled(安慰) him with tears running down his cheeks, he said, “may I please be alone with her for a while?” The nurses hugged him and closed the door.
Suddenly from the room came the most beautiful male voice one has never heard singing. It was almost haunting the way it floated through the halls. All of the nurses stepped out into the hallways to listen as he sang Beautiful Brown Eyes at the top of his lungs. When the tune faded, the door opened and he called the nurses. He looked at the nurses in the eyes then hugged them saying, “I sang that song to her every night from the first day we met. Normally I close the door and keep my voice down so as not to disturb the other patients. But I had to make sure she heard me tonight as she was on her way to heaven. She had to know that she will always be my forever love. Please apologize to anyone I bothered. I just don't know how I will make it without her, but I will continue to sing to her every night. Do you think she will hear me?”With these words, he then turned and walked down the hall, his back hunched(弯成弓状), whistling the song softly as he went.40.The husband did the following for his wife EXCEPT ________.

Read the following reviews for movies that are showing at the moment. And then answer questions.
Happiness(Romance) ★★★★
Happiness tells the story of two people (Lisa Turbot and Danny Roy) who work for different advertising companies. They talk on the phone all the time and don't like each other. But then they correspond by email and fall in love. This movie will be very popular with teenagers and people who like romances. It also has beautiful music.I Scream (Thriller) ★★
In I Scream, Paul (Colin Jacks) is a young man who joins a thriller club. Each of the members tries to frighten the others. Paul is told to stay in an old house for the night. Everyone who has tried to stay in the house before has died. This movie is very frightening but also quite silly. It doesn't make sense for Paul to stay in the house when things start to go wrong. Only for people who like thrillers. Paul's Heroes (Comedy) ★★★
This is a very funny war movie set in World War Two. Six soldiers (including Sammy Turblow) have to get to Italy to take secret messages to the American army there. During the movie, they dress up as women and fight with Italian workers. You can guess the ending, but it's great fun getting there.________(Drama)
This is a very good drama with Jack Ross, who plays a hard-working truck driver. His wife becomes ill and he has to find a doctor who can help her. In his travels he meets Dr. Lloyd (Phil Driver) who has found the cure for the illness, but Jack Ross has only twelve hours to get the medicine back to his wife on the other side of America. This is an excellent movie, which is very exciting.44.What movie does the reviewer like best?
A. No 1. B. No 2.
C. No 3. D. No 4.
45.A thriller is most probably ________.
A. A film which tells an interesting story
B. A film full of excitement
C. A humorous film
D. A film which is about a love affair
46.The underlined word “correspond” can be replaced by ________.
A.communicate B.match
C.write D.exchange
答案与解析:A 词义理解题。by email是解题关键。从下文知道他们相爱,由此推断A项正确。47.Which of the following is the best title for the fourth film?
A.A Hard-working Truck Driver
B.Medicine
C.A Strange illness
D.Twelve Hours

I'm a robot. My name is Bright. I have a round head and my hair is nothing but an aerial. I'm slim and my body looks like a tube.
My master is a good-natured robot expert who has made me. Only, he likes drinking too much.
Last weekend, my master went to a bar to relax himself after a week's work. He did this on almost every weekend. As usual, I followed him to the bar and stopped at the gate, waiting for him.I waited there for three hours without seeing my master come out. Another two hours passed, he didn't turn up yet. I was worried but couldn't move—my master didn't give me this program—he hates my disturbing.
Oh, there! My master was coming along staggering. He was deadly drunk. When he came to the gate, I extended my arms to support him. Then I squatted down and carried him on my back. We left the bar and walked home. It was now deep at night and my dear master was snoring on my back.Such is my master. I feel grateful to him all the time, otherwise there couldn't have been me!
