Three Boys and a Dad
Brad closed the door slowly as Sue left home to visit her mother.Expecting a whole day to relax,he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months.“This will be like a walk in the park,” he’d told his wife.“I’ll look after the kids, and you can go and visit your mom.”
Things started well, but just after eight o’clock, his three little “good kids”—Mike,Randy, and Alex—came down the stairs in their night clothes and shouted “breakfast, daddy.” When food had not appeared within thirty seconds,Randy began using his spoon on Alex’s head as if it were a drum.Alex started to shout loudly in time to the beat(节拍).Mike chanted “Where’s my toast, where’s my toast” in the background.Brad realized his newspaper would have to wait for a few seconds.
Life became worse after breakfast.Mike wore Randy’s underwear on his head.Randy locked himself in the bathroom, while Alex shouted again because he was going to wash his pants.Nobody could find clean socks, although they were before their eyes.Someone named “Not Me” had spilled a whole glass of orange juice into the basket of clean clothes.Brad knew the talk show had already started.
By ten o’clock, things were out of control.Alex was wondering why the fish in the jar refused his bread and butter.Mike was trying to show off his talent by decorating the kitchen wall with his colour pencils.Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.Brad realised that the talk show was over and reading would be impossible.
At exactly 11:17,Brad called the daycare centre.“I suddenly have to go into work and my wife’s away. Can I bring the boys over in a few minutes?” The answer was obviously “yes” because Brad was smiling.
1.When his wife left home,Brad expected to .?
A.go out for a walk in the park
B.watch TV talk show with his children
C.enjoy his first day off work
D.read the newspaper to his children
根据第一段中的“Expecting a whole day to relax,he was thinking whether to read the newspaper or watch his favorite TV talk show on his first day off in months.”
2.Which of the following did Randy do?
A.Drawing on the wall. B.Eating apple jam.
C.Feeding the fish. D.Reading in a room.
根据第四段中的“Randy, thankfully, appeared to be reading quietly in the family room, but closer examination showed that he was eating apple jam straight from the bottle with his hands.”
3.Why did Brad ask the daycare centre for help?
A.Because he wanted to clean up his house.
B.Because he suddenly had to go to his office.
C.Because he found it hard to look after his boys.
D.Because he had to take his wife back.

This could be the perfect gift for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor.Smart socks, which can teach to dance, may be the answer for anyone with two left feet.?
The socks have been developed as a running tool to help runners improve their skills. Thanks to the socks, users can accurately record not only how far and fast they run but also how well.It means the user maximizes their performance, and reduces damage to body and prevents hurt. The hi-tech socks are made of special fibers that watch the movements of your feet. They look, feel and can be washed like normal clothes.
Sensors record each movement and send it by an ankle transmitter(脚踝发射器) to a smartphone. Then a “virtual coach” application shows the information and can tell the user what they are doing wrong, and help to improve skill in any task with feet.
The socks should be useful to athletes and weekend joggers.“People think running is so easy and of course everybody can do it but not necessarily safely and well,” Dr.Davide Vigano said.A recent study showed that between 60 and 80 percent of runners got hurt per year. This is pretty much more than any other human activity.Researchers say the technology can also be developed to teach people how to dance, play sports such as golf,or even to help to teach women to walk better in high heels.
Mr.Vigano said,“People could all benefit from the idea.We have had interest from all sorts of sports, like skiing, football, cycling and golf.Anything where you have to use your feet can use it.It could even be put in high heels to help women walk in them safely.”
Socks are just the start, and the technology could be used in gloves, hats and boots. The socks, anklet and software package, are expected to be sold for around £120,which will go on sale in March.
4.What does the underlined part “anyone with two left feet” refer to?
A.People who are disabled.
B.People who are interested in dancing.
C.People who are not good at dancing.
D.People who invented the socks.
根据上句“This could be the perfect gift for the partner, who embarrasses you on the dance floor.”
5.What’s special about fibers that the socks are made of?
A.They feel much softer than normal clothes.
B.They can monitor the movement of feet.
C.They are expensive to produce.
D.They act as a smartphone for users.
根据第二段“The hi-tech socks are made of special fibers that watch the movements of your feet.”
6.Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the socks?
A.They can improve the skill of running.
B.They can help women walk better in high heels.
C.They can teach people to dance well.
D.They can be worn for days without washing.
7.According to Dr.Vigano, .?
A.everyone can make good use of the smart socks
B.users can run as fast as they like with the socks
C.60 to 80 percent of runners would like to buy the smart socks
D.no runners will get hurt, thanks to the socks
答案:A
根据倒数第二段“People could all benefit from the idea.”

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war,but years go by without any clear winner.Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries:Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it.From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article,I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school,or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.Second,blaming.The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong.Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics,or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect.Unfortunately,as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong.
1.Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?

C.Because neither has any clear winner.
D.Because both are about where to draw the line.

1.用于 there be 句型。
There are some students in the classroom.
2.用于“ here(there,now,then)+不及物动词+主语”的句型中,或以 in,out,up,down,away 等副词开头的句子里,以表示强调。
Here comes the bus.
Now comes your turn.
Out went the children.
Here it is.
Here he comes.
South of the city lies a big steel factory.
From the valley came a frightening sound.
Present at the meeting were Mr.Li,Mr.Wang and many other teachers.
Gone are the days when we used foreign oil.
Among the goods are books,exercise-books,pens and some other things.
Only in this way can you solve this problem.
Only after he had spoken out the word did he realize he had made a big mistake.
2.not,little,hardly,scarcely,no more,no longer,in no way,never,seldom,not only,no sooner...than...
No sooner had I got home than it began to rain.
Seldom do I go to work by bus. 910876512343.so/such...that结构中的so或such位于句首可以构成部分倒装,强调so/such和that之间的部分。
So unreasonable was his price that everybody startled.
Had I seen him yesterday I wouldn’t go to his house now.
Young as he is,he knows a lot.
Try as he would,he might fail again.
Child as he was,he had to make a living.
A bad-tempered man as Mr.Chen is,he loves us deeply.
It is Tom who is going with me.
It was on Monday night that all this happened.
It is American movies that he likes to watch.
Was it in 1933 that the Second World War broke out?
Why is it that smoking is not allowed here?
(2)在强调时间、地点、原因或方式状语时,要用that而不用when,where,why或how。
It was in 1988 that he joined the League.
It was because I could speak English that I got the job.
It is/was not until...that...
It was not until she took off her dark glasses that I recognized she was a famous film star.
It was at ten last night that you knew the news, wasn’t it?

A
Back in freshman year,I found myself wondering whether it should really be called “volunteering” if students only do it because they have to.
I ended up volunteering at Weyrich Health Center, helping elderly patients with daily tasks. The more I did these tasks, the more disconnected I felt from the seniors.Though I felt bad for them,I did not want to interact with them.
Then one rainy day,I met Colonel Hemsworth. He invited me to his table and asked for some company.I regarded this as another boring task. However, when I listened to his stories,I learned that he was a brilliant war veteran(老兵),and I found his tales interesting.
After my brief talk with Colonel,I realized that I shared common characters with all the seniors.I felt like an oxygen molecule(分子)—ready to form a relationship—rather than an isolated gas.?
I met with many learned senior citizens who shared their experiences and wisdom. No longer did I walk aimlessly down the hallways.I found myself enjoying talking with these people as I learned their histories. Why hadn’t I realized sooner that volunteer work could enlighten me?
Some people argue that volunteering and working for change does not help. However, they fail to realize that the world is constantly changing and humans must adapt. My experience at Weyrich Health Center has taught me that refusing to change one’s views and accept new ones leads to short-term goals that finally disappear.Communication with others is an important part of life.Volunteering is not just a requirement or a way to improve your resume;it is a time for service and personal growth.
Now I enjoy volunteering my time surrounded by seniors who bring history alive for me.By communicating with them,I have developed into a more dynamic person.

A
At home, ordering food from a menu is a normal, everyday routine.I don’t even give it a second thought. In China,it’s a whole other story! Here, ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the adventure begins before the food is even served!
Many restaurants in central Beijing advertise “English language menus”,but the translations can just add to the confusion.Although accompanying pictures can be a helpful relief, the translations often make the whole experience even more amusing.During my first few weeks in China I tried some delicious dishes with strange names. As an experiment,my friends and I would order things like “students addicted to chicken gristle(软骨)” and “red burned lion head”.It was always fun to see what landed on our table.Eventually we learned that “lion head” was actually pork, and “students” are “addicted” to diced(切碎的) chicken with green pepper.
Recently,I came across a busy restaurant down a narrow side street in a Beijing hutong. It was lunchtime and the small room was packed with people sitting on small stools eating noodles.I was hungry and cold, and the steaming bowls looked irresistible!I sat myself down and called out for a “caidan”.In response, the waitress pointed to a wall at the back of the restaurant. The wall was full of Chinese characters describing numerous dishes. There was only one sentence in English:“crossing over the bridge noodles”.
I had never heard of the dish and had no idea what it would taste like.I took a gamble and ordered one bowl of “crossing over the bridge noodles”.A few minutes later the waitress carried over a heavy bowl full of broth(肉汤) and I quickly dug in.It was the best bowl of noodles I had ever tasted!I have been back again and again and each time I point at the English sentence—“crossing over the bridge noodles”.I always enter a restaurant in China feeling excited and a little nervous.Who knows what the next ordering adventure will reveal?
1.How does the writer find the English-language menus in many of Beijing’s restaurants?
A.Confusing but amusing. B.Easy to understand.
C.Boring and annoying. D.Accurate and helpful.
答案:A
根据第二段中的“...but the translations can just add to the confusion”和“...the translations often make the whole experience even more amusing”可知,作者认为,很多北京餐馆所提供的英语菜单让人有些困惑但是又让人感觉很有趣。故选A项。
2.The underlined word “gamble” in the last paragraph probably means “ ”.?
A.taste B.look
C.step D.risk
3.The passage mainly deals with .?
A.the author’s favorite Chinese dishes
B.the fun the author had ordering food in China’s restaurant
C.a comparison between Western food and Chinese food
D.the correct way to translate the names of Chinese dishes into English
4.The passage is developed mainly in the form of .?
A.examples and statements
B.comparison and conclusion
C.causes and effects
D.time and description
答案:A
故选A项。
B
When a leafy plant is under attack,it doesn’t sit quietly.Back in 1983,two scientists,Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds,VOCs for short.
Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked. It’s a plant’s way of crying out.But is anyone listening?Apparently.Because we can watch the neighbors react.
Some plants pump out smelly chemicals to keep insects away. But others do double duty. They pump out perfumes designed to attract different insects who are natural enemies to the attackers.Once they arrive, the tables are turned. The attacker who was lunching now becomes lunch.?
In study after study,it appears that these chemical conversations help the neighbors. The damage is usually more serious on the first plant, but the neighbors, relatively speaking, stay safer because they heard the alarm and knew what to do.
Does this mean that plants talk to each other?Scientists don’t know.Maybe the first plant just made a cry of pain or was sending a message to its own branches, and so,in effect, was talking to itself.Perhaps the neighbors just happened to “overhear” the cry.So information was exchanged, but it wasn’t a true, intentional back and forth.
Charles Darwin, over 150 years ago, imagined a world far busier, noisier and more intimate(亲密的) than the world we can see and hear. Our senses are weak. There’s a whole lot going on.
5.What does a plant do when it is under attack?
A.It makes noises.
B.It gets help from other plants.
C.It stands quietly.
D.It sends out certain chemicals.
根据第一段的“...send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals come from the injured parts of the plant...”
6.What does the author mean by “the tables are turned” in paragraph 3?
A.The attackers get attacked.
B.The insects gather under the table.
C.The plants get ready to fight back.
D.The perfumes attract natural enemies.
答案:A
7.Scientists find from their studies that plants can .?
A.predict natural disasters
B.protect themselves against insects
C.talk to one another intentionally
D.help their neighbors when necessary
答案:B

Have you ever felt sick to your stomach during a test?Have you ever been so worried about something that you ended up with a terrible headache?
If so,then you know what it’s like to feel stress. You’ve probably heard people say,“Wow,I’m really stressed out.” 1 But children have lots of things going on in their lives that can cause stress, too.?
What is stress?
Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad.You may feel angry, frustrated, scared,or afraid—which can give you a stomachache or a headache.
What causes stress?
Plenty of things can cause stress in a child’s life. 2 Good or normal stress might show up when you’re called on in class or when you have to give a report.Have you ever got butterflies in your stomach or sweaty hands? Those can be signs of good stress. 3 For example, you may do a better job on your book report if the anxiety inspires you to prepare well before you get up and read it to the class.?
But bad stress can happen if the stressful feelings keep going over time. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting,if a family member is sick,if you’re having problems at school,or if you’re going through anything else that makes you upset every day. 4 ?
Once you recognize that you’re feeling stressed, there are several things you can do.You can try talking about what’s bothering you with an adult you trust, like a parent or teacher. 5 An adult may have ideas about how to solve whatever is worrying you or making you uncomfortable.?
A.This kind of stress can help you to get things done.
B.Maybe you hear adults say those kinds of things all the time.
C.Bring up what’s been on your mind and how it makes you feel.
D.Everyone experiences stress at times—adults, teens, and even kids.
E.There are ways to reduce stress and manage the stress that’s unavoidable.
F.That kind of stress isn’t going to help you,and it can actually make you sick.
G.The trick is to remember that some types of stress are good and others are bad.

What will people die of 100 years from now?If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in biotechnology. With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time.Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war.Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.
In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live?Human brains were known to decide the final death.Cells are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine.Sometime between 2050 and 2100,medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so,people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on—in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.

Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays(紫外线) while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report by the UK newspaper The Telegraph.
The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University,Japan and American company Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on newly fallen snow on a ski trail(a rough path) in Ishikawa District, northern Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan’s Okinawa District. They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules(千焦耳) of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas.
The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency.According to the agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent, compared to 80 percent in the new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent with a 300-meter rise in height.
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That’s why we wear sunscreen on our skin before we get out in the sun.But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eyes, which is harmful.Your eyes will become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light.Fortunately, this is usually temporary and seldom causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious.Scientific studies and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.

Most young architects—particularly those in big cities—can only dream about working in a building of their own.And making that dream come true often means finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his partner,Brian Bell.Their building is a former automobile electrical-parts firm in Atlanta. From the outside,it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting walls.
In 2000,Yocum and Bell found this building in the city’s West End.Built in 1947,the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right,so Yocum bought it.He spent eight months of his off-hours on demolition, pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do,and “to treasure what was there—the walls, the rust, the light,” Yocum said.“Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. It’s like an art installation(装置) in there—a slow-motion show.”
Since the back building had been constructed without windows,an all-glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back of the building is a working area and a living room for Yocum and his wife.A sort of buffer(缓冲) zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom,a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allow views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond.
Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work.It has also given these architects a chance to show how they can make more out of less.
29.According to the passage,it is for most young architects in big cities to work in a building of their own.?

B.it is worthwhile to spend money on an old building
C.people should not judge things by their appearance
D.creative people can make the best of what they have

A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration. All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony.Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.
A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a piece of advice,“I read in a magazine,a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage,” she offered.“Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then,we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”
The husband agreed. So each of them tried to think of the things that annoyed them about the other and wrote down what they came up with. The next morning,at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.
“I’ll start,” offered the wife. She took out her list.It had many items on it,enough to fill three pages. In fact,as she started reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears were starting to appear in her husband’s eyes because he never thought that he had so many shortcomings.
The wife continued to read until she had read all three pages to her husband.“Now,you read your list and then we’ll talk about the things on both of our lists,” she said happily.
Quietly the husband stated,“I don’t have anything on my list.I think that you are perfect.I don’t want you to change anything for me.You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn’t want to try and change anything about you.The wife, touched by his honesty, the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.
In life, there are enough times when we are disappointed, depressed and annoyed. We don’t really have to go looking for them.We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty, light and promise. Why waste time in this world looking for the bad, disappointing or annoying when we can look around us and see the wonderful things before us?

Sleep is something we all do.But some people need to sleep more than others.Babies sleep most of the time.Children in school sleep about ten to twelve hours a night. Most adults sleep only seven or eight hours. 36 ?
All parts of our bodies have to rest after they work. Our arms need a rest after we lift heavy thing. When we run fast, our legs work hard. They get tired. We have to rest them. Our brains work hard, too. 37 We can sit quite still and rest our arms and legs. But our brains aren’t resting. They go right on thinking as long as we are awake.?
Our brains slow down a bit when we sleep and dream. 38 Instead of thinking wide-awake thoughts, our brains make up dreams. Some dreams are very pleasing. Some are not. Most of the time we forget them when we wake up.?
Scientists have tried to find out what would happen if people were not allowed to sleep. They asked some people not to go to bed.The people stayed up all night and all the next day. They stayed up the next night too,and the day after. They played games, but they made mistakes. They forgot things. 39 ?
The people grew rude and mean. They became angry with their friends. Finally they were too tired to stand up.When they sat down, they fell asleep.
Scientists have found that if people are not allowed to sleep and to dream, they act in an unusual way. 40 But we do know that we need it to stay well.So tonight have a good sleep.Lie down under the covers.Shut your eyes.Let your thoughts wander.Soon you’ll stop thinking. You’ll be asleep.?

Dear Mr.Jackson,
You may remember that we have discussed the noise that your children make while they are practising their musical instruments. You agreed to make sure that they would stop practising in the evenings.
To my great surprise, things have not changed and the situation is continuing as before.I find it difficult to stay in the house and have to go out for the evening to be away from the terrible noise.Much as I like music,I have had enough, and to be honest,I am not prepared to put up with the situation anymore.
I think it is high time that you realized your responsibilities as a member of the community.Unless you do something to change the situation,I will be forced to take legal action.I have sent a copy of this letter to my lawyer.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

I first met Paul Newman in 1968,when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film — it wanted somebody as well known as Paul — he stood up for me.I don’t know how many people would have done that;they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference,we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV.We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors:humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other — but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back — he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill,and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival.Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was,and we didn’t talk about it.Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
21.Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first?
A.Paul Newman wanted it.
B.The studio powers didn’t like his agent.
C.He wasn’t famous enough.
D.The director recommended someone else.
答案:C

A.They were of the same age.
B.They worked in the same theater.
C.They were both good actors.
D.They had similar characteristics.

根据第二段尤其是第三、四句“Both of us had the qualities and virtues....Those were also at the core(核心) of our relationship off the screen.”
23.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Their belief.
B.Their care for children.
C.Their success.

答案:A

A.To show his love of films.
B.To remember a friend.
C.To introduce a new movie.
D.To share his acting experience.
答案:B

A popular saying goes,“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true.Words have the power to build us up or tear us down.It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone else or ourselves—the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it,though. In fact,we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive,we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project,do well in a test,or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”.?
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store,we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner.Or harsh(刻薄的) and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us!Before speaking,we should always ask ourselves:Is it true?Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.
Words possess power:both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊) and motivate others to do their best.Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.
29.There is no need for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because .?
A.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

C.we can benefit from talking to ourselves
D.it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone
根据第二段的“We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it,though. In fact,we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.”

Teenagers who drink alcohol are at higher risk of becoming victims of violence,a Cardiff University study has found.
A team from the School of Dentistry’s Violence Research Group studied drinking habits in children aged 11-16 in England. They found not only a link between drink and violence but also that children who drank were more likely to be hit, even if they weren’t violent themselves.
The researchers are now calling for measures to prevent alcohol misuse to reduce injury risks.Current policy focuses on reducing aggression but this research shows that there should be equal effort to reduce victimization.
More than 4,000 children were surveyed at 13 schools at four local authorities in the North, the Midlands,London, and the South. The study found that 25% of 11-year-olds were drinking monthly and 3.6% daily, with 12.8% admitting to get drunk 3 to 5 times a year.By the age of 16,40% were drinking weekly and 6.2% were drinking every day.The research also showed 22.6% of 16-year-olds were getting drunk more than 21 times a year.
The study, which has just been published in Journal of Adolescence, found a strong link between frequency of drinking and frequency of hitting other people.
However, children who were reported to drink monthly were also three times more likely to be hit.Adolescents who drank but didn’t get into fights were more likely to be hit than those who did fight.
Professor Jonathan Shepherd, who led the research, said a lot of previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders rather than the victims. His team is calling for more prevention work from parents and teachers in the first two years of secondary school by taking advantage of the “teachable moment”,that is,immediately after a student has missed school because of drunkenness.
Previous work by Professor Jonathan Shepherd has shown drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of reduced physical co-ordination,poor decision-making in threatening situations and isolation while out late at night.
He said,“This new study seems to be the first to show a direct link between alcohol misuse and victimization. There now needs to be much more effort put into reducing alcohol misuse in order to reduce injury.”

When I Have a Different Opinion?
We may have different opinions in organizing class activities. We may have various ways to deal with such a situation. When I have a better idea,I would choose to stick to it.By doing so,I cannot only share good ideas with others but also learn to express myself clearly.
Once we were discussing where to go for an outing. Most of my classmates wanted to go to a park while I had an idea of going to a nicer place.I managed to persuade my classmates into accepting my idea.We did have a good time that day.Good opinions are worth sticking to because they can benefit us all.

①What can you conclude/imply from this passage?
②What’s the author’s attitude towards...?
③We can infer/learn from the passage that...

The War between Britain and France
In the late eighteenth century, battles broke out in almost every corner of Europe,as well as in the Middle East,South Africa, the West Indies, and Latin America. In reality, however, there was only one major war during this time, the war between Britain and France. All other battles were ancillary1 to this larger conflict, and were often at least partially related to its antagonist2 goals and strategies. France sought total rule of Europe. This goal was held back by British independence and Britain’s efforts throughout the continent to defeat Napoleon;through treaties,Britain built coalitions3 (not dissimilar in concept to today’s NATO) guaranteeing British participation in all major European conflicts. These two antagonists were poorly matched,as they had very unequal strengths;France was predominant4 on land,Britain at sea.The French knew that, short of defeating the British navy, their only hope of victory was to close all the ports of Europe to British ships. Accordingly,France set out to overcome Britain by extending its military domination5 from Moscow to Lisbon, from Jutland to Calabria. All of this entailed6 big risk, because France did not have the military resources to control this much territory and still protect itself and maintain order at home. French strategists calculated that a navy of 150 ships would provide the force necessary to defeat the British navy.Such a force would give France a three-to-two advantage over Britain. This advantage was thought to be necessary because of Britain’s superior sea skills and technology, and also because Britain would be fighting a defensive war, allowing it to win with fewer forces.Napoleon never lost sight of his goal, because Britain represented the last barrier to his control of Europe. As his force neared that goal,Napoleon grew increasingly impatient and began planning an immediate attack.
