The Teaching Plan for Lesson 3, Unit 8 in Go For It (1A)

Learning Objectives
(1) To learn & practice the new words and phrases: birth, date of birth, old, how old, age.
(2) To practice and get more familiar with the 12 months and ordinal number.
(3) To drill the sentence pattern:
-----When is your birthday
-----My birthday is Oct. 4th.
(4) To train students spoken English skill: talk about birthday and age with friends.
(5) To cultivate Students’ team spirit and develop students’ sense of cooperation and competition in pair work & team work.
Teaching Procedure
Stage 1 Revisions (6 minutes)
Step 1 Students say out the 12 months in chorus, and the teacher writes them down in short form.
Step 2 Teacher names some students spell out the words to check their memories.
Step 3 Students say out the principle of ordinal numbers. And teacher speak in Chinese; students speak in English to review the irregular ordinal numbers: first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth, twelfth.
Stage 2 Pre-task: Make a name card (5 minutes)
Step 1 Teacher shows a model name card like:

And to explain the new words and phrases:
birth n. 出生
date of birth 出生日期
old adj. 年岁的,年长的
how old 多大年级,多少岁 e.g. How old are you / How old is he
age n. 年龄,年级
Step 2 Students read the words and phrases after the teacher.
Step 3 Students make a name card for themselves like the model name card.
Stage 3 While-task: to get more familiar with your partner. (18 minutes)
Step 1 Teacher and one or more students make a dialogue with the name card like:
A: Hello!/Good morning!
B: Hello!/Good morning!
A: When is your birthday
B: My birthday is Oct. 4th./ It's Oct. 4th./Oct. 4th.
A: What class are you in
B: I'm in Class 3, Grade 7.
A: OK. Goodbye.
B: Bye!
Step 2 Students read the dialogue on blackboard after the teacher.
Step 3 Pair work: Using their name cards, students make a dialogue as the model.
Step 4 Group competition: Students perform their dialogue by asking one by one. In the same time, teacher note down the name and birthday on the calendar. The group that makes the most reports loudly and clearly is the winner. Teacher will give the winner a drawing as a prize.
Stage 4 Post-task: His birthday is ... (6 minutes)
Step 1 Look at the calendar on blackboard and the teacher guides students to describe the birthdays like:
These are my classmates' birthdays. Xiaoming's birthday is Sept. 2nd......
Step 2 Students retell the information on the calendar again.
Step 3 Teacher points to the Nov. 8th to asks "What happened on this day ". Then let students list out the events in our school in order of date.
Stage 5 Summary and homework (5 minutes)
Step 1 T. Summarize the important points we've learned today.
Step 2 Using a name card, Ss. are A. T is B. Then A and B make a dialogue.
Step 3 Homework:
1. Students make a dialogue with partners using sentence "When is your birthday " “How old are you "
2. List out events happened during from Nov. 8th to Nov. 11th in our school.
