John Snow (1813-1858) was born and worked as a doctor in Great Britain. He was originally an anaesthetist(麻醉师).He was so famous that he became the doctor for Queen Victoria at the births of her many children. Four outbreaks of cholera in the 1830s and 1840s killed many people in England.

The significance of Snow’s famous cholera map is that, by closing the Broad Street pump by removing its handle, Dr. Snow stopped a major cholera epidemic(传染病), and thus demonstrated that cholera is a water borne disease. This was not previously understood. The map is the most famous and classical example in the field of medical cartography(制图法).
