Fifth-grader Dominic — or Nic, as his friends call him — and the group of friends he’s walking with are from?Oyster-Adams?Bilingual?School?in?Northwest Washington. Together on a “walking school bus,” these kids walk every day to get to school.www-2-1-cnjy-com
“I love walking with my friends to school,” Lizey says. “This way, we have half an hour to hang out before school, and I feel good.”
The walking school bus is an idea to encourage kids to walk to school. So what is a walking school bus, exactly?
“It’s like a car pool (汽车共乘), except we walk,”?says 10-year-old Stanton, who?“rides”?with Nic and Lizey.?“There are different little stops, and the group just keeps getting bigger and bigger with more and more kids the closer we get to school.”
“Walking school buses have many?merits,” says Lizey’s mom, Meri, who started the “bus” that travels 1.3 miles each morning from Woodley Park to Oyster-Adams Bilingual School. The “bus” runs every day unless it’s colder than 25 degrees outside or it rains heavily. Meri says the effort put in setting up what she calls “walk pool” helps parents save time because they take turns checking the walk. It also saves energy and cuts down on neighborhood traffic. Having fewer cars on the road means better air quality. It also provides kids with a chance to exercise and have fun.
But there are rules, such as being on time, staying on the sidewalk and crossing only at green lights and within crosswalks. Nic says another rule is that “your feet should move way faster than your lips.”【版权所有:21教育】

What do the following places have in common: the?Serengeti?Desert,?Edinburgh’s?Old?Town?and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve?
The?Serengeti?Desert?is in?Tanzania?and?Kenya,?Africa. It contains (包含) thousands of kilometers of dry grasslands and many rare kinds of animals.
Edinburgh’s?Old?Town?is in the capital city of?Scotland. It has many old buildings and streets. There are very few new buildings in?Edinburgh’s?Old?Town.

The story of World Heritage Sites begins more than 3,000 years ago. At that time, the great king of?Egypt?built many temples. But after thousands of years, sand covered them.
Stories tell of a young boy named?Abu Simbel?who found the temples. One day,?Abu Simbel?saw something under the sand. Soon, the ancient temples of Ramses II were officially rediscovered. But they were not safe. The government of?Egypt?planned to build a dam on the?Nile?River. It would create a large lake, which would cover the temples in water.
Many people did not want the temples destroyed. UNESCO agreed and raised 40 million dollars from around the world to save the temples. From 1964 to 1968, engineers took the temples apart in many pieces and rebuilt them hundreds of meters back from the?Nile?River. Today, they are called the Abu Simbel Temples, in memory of the young boy who first found them.
The effort to save the Abu Simbel Temples was a success. So in 1972, UNESCO formed the World Heritage Committee, which protects places on the earth that are of great cultural or natural value.
Any country in the world can ask for protection from UNESCO. The countries send a list of places to the World Heritage Committee. Once a year, the World Heritage Committee meets and votes on which places to protect. When they choose a place, it officially becomes a World Heritage Site.

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
For several years, Paul Watson, a Canadian environmentalist, and his crew (船员) have been very busy with a campaign (运动) every winter to find and stop Japanese ships that hunt whales in the name of research. Watson is the captain of a ship called the Steve Irwin. He and his crew work very hard to save endangered sea creatures. Many kinds of large whale were greatly?depleted?in numbers before an official order to stop commercial whaling was made in 1986. And although some kinds of whale have shown great recovery since then, others like the Northern Right Whale remain seriously endangered.
In February 2009, the sea captain noted, “For twelve hours our ship, the?Steve Irwin, has been on the tail of the Japanese whale killing factory ship the?Nisshin Maru. Every hour has brought us closer to this monstrous killing machine, this industrialized whale-killing place.” The Japanese have continued killing whales over the last 20 years in the name of “scientific” whaling. Watson states that research is not the actual intention. Some say that the whale meat ends up on food store shelves.
Disagreements between the?Steve Irwin?and the whaling ships have resulted in two collisions (碰撞) serious enough to make the headlines. The whaling ships have been accused (控告) of using something illegal that produces loud waves. These made Watson’s crew members feel dizzy and lose their sense of direction and may have caused ear and eye damage. The Japanese whalers also used powerful water cannons (高压水枪) against the Steve Irwin crew. In response, the Japanese have accused the?Steve Irwin?of causing the ships to hit each other.
The behavior of people on both sides of the problem has been dangerous and caused a lot of disagreement. The question that needs to be asked is whether violence against illegal whaling operations is reasonable and right.
1. What keeps Paul Watson busy every winter?
A. Carrying out research on whales.
B. Keeping an eye on Japanese ships.
C. Preventing whales from being caught.
D. Organizing campaigns to protect the environment.

A. intended to hunt whales for meat
B. had met with some sea monsters
C. took whales alive for scientific research
D. was following the?Steve Irwin?all the time
4. What do the collisions show?
A. Laws need to be changed.
B. Both sides are acting outside of the law.?
C. The Japanese are worse than the?Steve Irwin?crew.
D. The?Steve Irwin?crew should act in a non-violent manner.
5. What is the text mainly about?
A. Paul Watson: the great environmentalist.
B. The Japanese whaling ship: the?Nisshin Maru.
C. Canadian?vs?Japanese environmental problems.
D. The anti-whaling efforts of the?Steve Irwin?crew.21*cnjy*com

If you examined the birth date of every World Cup soccer player, you would find an unusual tendency (倾向): the best soccer players are more likely to have been born earlier in the year than later. If you then examined the European national youth teams that supply many World Cup players, this tendency would be even more noticeable. In recent English teams, for example, half the top teenage soccer players were born in January, February or March.
Professor Anders Ericsson at?Florida?State?University?is trying to answer an important question: when someone is very good at something, what actually makes them good? Early experiments by Ericsson suggested that the best way to learn was a process known as?“deliberate practice (强化训练).”?This is more than simply repeating a task. Rather, it includes setting specific goals, getting immediate feedback (反馈) and concentrating equally on technique and results.
Ericsson and his colleagues therefore began studying expert performers in a wide range of professions. They’ve come to a rather surprising conclusion: practice really does make perfect. What we call?“talent”?is highly overrated (高估), as expert performers are nearly always made, not born. The research also suggests that when it comes to choosing a life path, you should do what you love. People often give up trying to do things they don’t like, telling themselves they simply don’t have the talent. But what they really don’t have is the will to succeed and to put in the deliberate practice that would make them better. Ericsson’s conclusions suggest that students should follow their interests earlier in their schooling to build up experience and receive meaningful feedback.
The ideas of the researchers can explain the question of why so many excellent soccer players are born early in the year. Since youth sports are organised by age group, teams have a cut-off birth date. So the coach will pick the player born in January because he is supposed to be bigger, stronger, more mature (成熟的) than the one born in December. The coach is mistaking maturity for ability but once chosen, those January-born players, year after year, receive the training, the practice, the feedback, which will turn them into the best players. What about those December-born players? They never get a chance.
6. The unusual tendency about the top soccer players is connected to their _____.
A. country????? ????????
B. technique??
C. training team????? ?
D. birth month
7. What did Ericsson want to find out?
A. The meaning of repeating a task.
B. The reason behind one’s success.
C. What “deliberate practice” exactly is.
D. How to make someone good enough.
8. According to the research, _____.
A. a star is made
B. talent doesn’t exist
C. the slow need to start practicing early
D. expert performers aren’t as good as imagined
9. What may Ericsson advise people to do?
A. Set specific goals.??
B. Choose what they love.??
C. Develop a variety of interests.??
D. Try to do a lot of different things.
10. What does the author think of the way the coach picks a player?
A. Completely wrong. ?
B. Quite unusual.
C. A bit unfair.?? ????????
D. Very proper.

Recently our English Club has had a discussion about online shopping.?We had different opinions.
Some people are in favour of online shopping. They think online shopping is very convenient and time-saving. It allows people to buy all kinds of things without leaving their homes. Besides, people can compare prices among different online shops before making decisions.
However, others think differently. They think online shopping isn’t as reliable as traditional shopping. People can’t touch or try the things they want to buy. They may get unsuitable things or even get cheated by receiving goods of poor quality.
In my opinion, online shopping has more advantages than disadvantages. It’s quite convenient and time-saving as long as people think carefully before placing orders.21世纪教育网版权所有
