completing a questionnaire We usually do a survey to collect information. In a
survey, we ask people to respond to a list of questions
or statements. We call this list a questionnaire. There
are several rules for making a good questionnaire.
These rules are to make sure that the meaning of each
question is clear.Questionnaire1. How long have you been here?

sometimes not at all5. Give specific references. 3. Avoid negative sentences.2. Use short and simple sentences. 4. Use precise language. 1. Ask one piece of information at a time. 6. Make sure people have the
necessary knowledge to answer. What makes a good questionnaire?Have a try: Complete the questionnaire on Page 12.Step 1: designing a questionnaire You are working for a book club. The club is
doing a survey of its members, but in the questionnaire
there are three questions/statements
that break the rules on Page 12.
Please correct them.Answers:Question 2 should be divided into two questions:
①How did you find out about the Best Book Club?
newspapers □ magazines □
friends □ Internet □
②When did you join the club?

the year before last □ Question 3 should be more accurate like the following:

last 6 months? Question 6 should be more accurate.
It is too long and difficult. The instruction should
be cut into only two words “Please specify”.Listen to the tape and answer the questions on Page 13.Listening1.The first thing you do when meeting someone is

(得出结论)Making suggestions
(提出建议) Analysing statistics
(分析统计数据)Practice Below are some statistics gathered from a school
survey about students’ hobbies and interests.
Analyse the statistics and draw at least three more
conclusions. Then make your suggestions.A school
survey about
students’
hobbies and
interests. Conclusions:The second most popular activity for students in
the school is surfing the Internet.
2. Only a few students in the school like reading.
3. Most students in the school don’t like dancing.Suggestions: The school should guide students in surfing the
Internet.
2. The school should find ways to arouse students’
interests in reading.
3. The school should take steps to make more
students become interested in dancing.Favourite sports Step 3:writing a report Analyse the statistics below and read the passage
on Page 17, preparing for the writing in Part B.Conclusions ¤ The most popular sport is basketball, which is
played by 45% of the students.
¤ This is followed by football, which 40% of the
students often play.
¤ A small number of students play other sports ,
such as table tennis. You are to write a report on getting the students
at your school interested in reading by starting a book
club. Use the information on Page 16, the sample in Part
A and the statistics below to help you.Students are interested in:Conclusions:¤ The most popular reading subject is humour, which
28% of the students enjoy.
¤ This is followed by travel books, which 25% of
the students are interested in.
¤ 16% of the students like reading about sports and
12% like science books.
¤ A small number of the students are fond of other
subjects, such as history.Suggestions¤ We have a humour book club, since humour
is the most popular subject
¤ …One possible version From our recent survey of students, we have found
that only 8 percent of the students like reading. The
most popular reading subject is humour, which 28
percent of the students enjoy. This is closely followed
by travel books, which 25 percent of the students are
interested in. 16 percent of the students like reading
books about sports and 12% like science books. A
small number of the students like other subjects, such
as history. We want to get the students interested in reading.
For this reason, we suggest that we have a humour
book club, since humour is the most popular subject.
Each class would have its own club meetings once a
week. At the meetings, they could discuss what books
they are currently reading, and could even read aloud
some funny bits from the books. The class monitors could then come up with a list
of humour books which are popular with the students, and this list could be shared with the other classes. This would be a good way to encourage students to read by helping them learn about books that they might enjoy.Homework1. Finish the report on Page 17 (Part B).
