UGG boots have been a winterweather fashion for several years now, combining fun_ction, comfort, warmth and even some style. What many UGGenthusiasts don't know is that their boots are a breeding ground for bacteria and cause foot problems.21·世纪*教育网
Doctors believe the boots, which are particularly popular among young teenage girls, are leading to a rise in the number of people suffering pains in their feet and knees.
Dr. Ian Drysdale, head of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, believes because the foot does not get the proper support on the inside, it will lead to more ankle, knee, hip and back problems. “These boots are not designed for outside wear. Just because something becomes a trend or fashionable doesn't mean it's good or right,” he said. “The particular problem with this type of footwear is that it is unsupported. It's a slipper. You wouldn't normally expect to be doing outdoor activities from something that's indoor. If you decide to wear your pajamas outside all the time, someone will come up and say it's not a good idea.” Dr. Drysdale explained that the feet issues become a particular problem among young teenage girls, whose bones are “plastic” and developing when they are growing. “If that structure is developing in an inappropriate way,” he said,“then the ultimate structure will be deformed.”
Mike O'Neill, a consultant surgeon, said,“As the foot slides around, you get wear and tear (磨损) on the joints on the inside of the foot. The ankle is in the wrong position, the thigh bone also changes position, and you get an abnormal movement in the pelvis, which leads to back problems.”
UGG Australia, who makes the designer version of the boots, told The Daily Wirror that their boots are “comfort” rather than “performance” footwear and consumers should be aware of “knockoffs (仿制品)” which lack reinforced heels in their boots.

21·cn·jy·com
1.B 通过后面and可知,只有messy合适,意为“杂乱的”。
2.B appearance“外表”,上文描写的是男人的外表,故选B。
3.D smell意为“味道难闻”,根据语境可以选出答案。
4.A beyond意为“在……范围外”。通过上下文可知,孩子的母亲不想让孩子以貌取人,而应该关注外表以外的东西,所以选beyond。 2·1·c·n·j·y

6.D example“榜样”,下文有直接对应,且set an example也为常用搭配。

Deception (骗术) is something that people do all the time, and it plays an important role in military (军事的) strategy. Now some researchers are trying to figure out how to get robots to do it, by looking at the behavior of squirrels and birds.21世纪教育网版权所有
At Georgia Tech, a team led by Ronald Arkin, a professor at the School of Interactive Computing, studied the literature on squirrels hiding their acorns (橡果). Squirrels will hide their food in a certain place, but when they see other squirrels trying to steal from them, they attempt to fool the thieves by running to a false location.
Ronald Arkin and his Ph. D. student Jaeeun Shim used that as a model for robot behavior. They programmed the robot into tricking a “predator (捕食者)” machine by doing what a squirrel does: showing the enemy a false location for an important resource.21cnjy.com
The team also looked at how other animals—in this case, a species of bird called Arabian babbler—drive off predators. A babbler will make an alarm call when they see a predator and other babblers will join the bird and make more calls. They then surround the predator, all the while flapping (拍打) wings and making noises. The babblers don't ever actually fight the animal they want to drive off; they just make enough noises and flaps around enough so that it seems that attacking a babbler isn't worth it.21·cn·jy·com
They found that the deception works when the group reaches a certain size—essentially, when enough birds arrive to convince the enemy that it's best to back off. Davis modeled that behavior in software using a military scene and found that it worked even if the group didn't have the firepower to confront the enemy directly.
The military is interested in this because a robot that can fool an opponent is a valuable tool. It could lead an enemy down a false trail or make itself look more dangerous than it actually is.【出处:21教育名师】

VI.阅读理解
From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source of possible failure and public humiliation. When children are little we make them read aloud, before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they ” know ” all the words they are reading. This means that they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously.
One day soon after school had started, I said to them, ” Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them just for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough for me. Also I’m not going to ask you what words mean.”
The children sat stunned and silent. Was this a teacher talking? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously,” Mr. Holt, do you really mean that? ” I said just as seriously, “ I mean every word of it.”
During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations I thought I knew what the boos was. I said to myself, “ It can’t be,” and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick, in the edition with woodcuts. I said, “ Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.”
This is exactly what reading should be and in school so seldom is --- an exciting, joyous adventure. Find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, go on to something else. How different is our mean-spirited, picky insistence that every child get every last little scrap of “ understanding” that can be dug out of a book.

When you don’t have anything planned for the day or it’s rainy outside and your children are stuck in the house, why not sit around and tell them riddles(谜语)? Telling riddles will make your family laugh and sometimes even scratch their heads, trying to figure out what the answer is.2·1·c·n·j·y
Riddles have been a pastime for centuries. Not only have riddles been something for passing the time, but they have also been used to pass on secret information during the Second World War. Even the ancient Greeks used riddles. They would tell riddles at parties and whoever was the first to get them right would receive prize.
Most riddles use words that have double meanings or share the same sound like “hear” and “here”. So in order to get the riddle, you will have to do some creative thinking and think of all the possibilities of different words. The difficulty of figuring out the riddle is based on the riddle itself. The riddle has to provide you with enough clues to come to the right answer, but that doesn’t mean that the clues have to be easy.
If you are looking to tell riddles but don’t know any, you can look online and you will find a large number of sites that will have hundreds of different riddles to choose from. If you would like to look somewhere else then you could look at your local bookstore, where you will be able to find many different books with thousands of riddles to choose from. You can even find websites and books that will tell you how to write your own riddles.
After you have found some resources that have different riddles, you will need to read through them to find the right ones for you and your family: You will also need to make sure that your kids will have a chance to figure out the answers. So take your time and choose the fight family riddles to tell.

The Internet is redrawing the media landscape and will be for decades to come, but traditional media will not be left out of the picture, argue two University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, journalism professors. Ed Mullins, chairman of the Journalism Department, and Jim Stovall, the founder of Dateline Alabama, the news website of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, agree that the future of the web is still a mystery, but argue that, in the near future, it will serve more as a helpmate to traditional media.www-2-1-cnjy-com
“Nobody knows where the web is taking us, but when it comes to journalism, old media will be dominant(most noticeable) players in the new media game.” Mullins believes. “ A report goes that most Americans go to sites operated by old-line media when looking for news on the web.”
Just as national old media dominate the web at that level, local old media run mostly by newspapers and, to a lesser degree, by television stations dominate those markets. Is there a pattern here? Yes, says Mullins and Stovall. “At least in the first decade of the web, newspaper companies dominate web journalism,” Mullins explains. “Why? They specialize in news, and that gives them an advantage. What most readers go to websites for is news and e-mail, a form of person-to-person news, especially in the form of chatting.”
The reason for newspapers dominance in web journalism, Stovall points out, is that they put the biggest money in news. “The Birmingham News, for example, with about 175 positions, has more journalists on its payroll than all of the state’s broadcast, cable, and web.”
1. What role does the Internet play in journalism according to Paragraph 1 ?
A. It will someday dominate the media market.
B. It is likely to threaten the future of print media.
C. It will become a helpful partner of print media.
D. It will revolutionize traditional journalism.
2. The following prove that old media still dominate web journalism except _________.
A. people prefer traditional media when looking for news
B. old media have the most important position in local markets
C. newspaper companies have more control in web journalism
D. few people go to websites to get national and local news
3. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Internet won’t get rid of print media
B. Internet challenges traditional media
C. Looking national local news on the web
D. Journalism should be dominated by web
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of traditional media?
A. Doubtful
B. Worried
C. Concerned
D. Optimistic

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called "transactive memory (交互记忆)".
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
5.The passage begins with two questions to ______.
A. introduce the main topic
B. show the author's attitude
C. describe how to use the Internet.
D. explain how to store information
6.In transactive memory, people ______.
A. keep the information in mind
B. change the quantity of information
C. organize information like a computer
D. remember how to find the information
7.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research?www.21-cn-jy.com
A. We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.

Many people write to newspapers and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to the editor must carry the writer’s full name, address and telephone number, although the information is not necessary for publication. This requirement to provide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are responsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard, he needs to claim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.“People today prefer living together to putting their signatures on a marriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for the relationship,” said social worker Ken Yip, “and this is what is causing a lot of family problems.” When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract or a bank document, the signature is a seal of consent, an agreement to take the matter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not process written complaints if they do not bear the writer’s signature. The absence of a signature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious and therefore does not deserve a reply. There are people who wish to remain anonymous(匿名的) for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr. King donates generously to charity several times a year. He gives simply because he wants to help but not for the publicity his donations may bring, and he doesn’t want his good deeds to make news. In other cases, people insist on anonymity because they are afraid of the consequences of revealing their identity. Crime witnesses may be willing to assist the police, but most are unwilling to give their names when reporting a crime.Name or no name? The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name. It is a matter of responsibility to use it when we make a statement, a claim or an accusation. We all want to honor our own name, and it is only by stamping our expression of an opinion with our name that we honor what we say.8. What does the writer mean by saying “Responsibility is the name of the game”?
A.Writers should be responsible for their names.
B.Writers need to provide their personal information in the game.
C.Names are required to indicate writers’ responsibility for what they say.
D.Publications must bear the writer’s full name, address and phone number.
9. The second paragraph suggests that a paper without a signature may______.
A.not get a reply B.be accepted all the time
C.become a family problem D.help to end a relationship
10. Some people don’t want their names known because they are_______.
A.ready for involvement B.hesitant to make a donation
C.afraid of an accusation D.unwilling to draw public attention
11. The passage is mainly about_____.
A.honor and writers B.signature and responsibility
C.identity and signature D.anonymity and signature

Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real Danger
??? We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.
??? ■Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders.【出处:21教育名师】
??? People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision.
??? The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.
??? ——Michael Horan
