1.This is the very knife I used to
cut apples yesterday.
A.that B.by which
C.which D.with which
A2.He is the only one of the students who
a winner of scholarship for three
years.
A.is B.are
C.have been D.has been解析 此题形式上好像只是考查主谓一致和时态的
式,one of the students中的先行词是the
处the only one of the students中的先行词是
而且句子中因为有状语for three years,
D3.The hard-working peasants and their happy
life we saw in the countryside made
a wonderful impression on us.
A./ B.who
C.which D.whom
and their happy life,既有人又有物,关系代
选择A。
A4.The result is not the same they had
expected, was rather disappointing.
A.which;as B.as;that
C.that;which D.as;which
有the same、so、as修饰时,关系词常用as,另
D。D5.Is this hotel offered you a job
you stayed the first time you arrived
here?
A.which;where
B.the one;in which
C.where;that
D.the one that;where解析 选项B、C是明显错误的。
This hotel
is offered you a job you stayed
the first time you arrived here?
构看来this hotel是主语,后面跟the one来作表
This hotel offered you a job is you stayed the first
time you arrived here.
选择A。
A6.Everyone stood up the hero came
into the lecture hall.
A.while B.instant
C.every time D.immediately
外,名词短语the moment,the minute,the
second,every time,the first time,last
D。D7.In a horse-racing sport, it is common
that the only active participants are
the horses and the riders, everyone
else watches.
A.when B.while
C.which D.where解析 while用作并列连词,意思是“但;却;然
动词,酌情用when或as。2.
the, this, that连用。常用的短语有:after a
while过了一会儿;all the while一直;in a
while不久;once in a while偶尔等。
答案 B8.— matters to do the job well—what
you are or where you come from?
—Neither. It depends on whether you put
your heart into it.
A.Which is it that
B.What it is that
C.Which it is that
D.What is it which解析 本句考查强调句式,特殊疑问词应放在句首,其结构是:特殊疑问词+is/was+it+that/
who...。 选择A。
答案 A9.Tomorrow is Tom’s birthday. Have you got
any idea ?
A.where is the party to be held
B.where the party is to be held
C.if a party is to be held
D.whether is a party to be held
用if ,只能用whether: a.
其后紧跟or not;d.
B10.Never before in greater need of
modern public transport than it is today.
A.has this city been
B.this city has been
C.was this city
D.this city was
scarcely,little,not等。故选择C。C11.When you answer questions in a job
interview, please remember the golden
rule: Always give the monkey exactly
he wants.
A.what B.which
C.when D.that
A12.Information has been put forward
more middle school graduates will be
admitted into universities.
A.while B.that
C.when D.as
B13.What the doctors really doubt is my
mother will recover from the serious
disease soon.
A.when B.how
C.whether D.why
whether。
C14. in the regulations that you should
not tell other people the password of your
e-mail account.
A.What is required B.What requires
C.It is required D.It requires
expect, consider, suggest等。
What is required in the regulations
is that you should not tell other people
the password of your e-mail account.。C15. ,I have to put it away and focus my
attention on study this week.
A.However the story is amusing
B.No matter amusing the story is
C.However amusing the story is
D.No matter how the story is amusing
解析 不管是however,还是no matter how,引导的
注意how/what/when/where + ever和
no matter how/what/when/where等的区别是:前者

1.I couldn’t remember the exact date of the
storm, but I knew it was Sunday
because everybody was at church.
A.a;the B.a;/
B2.Johnson had made up his mind to give it up,
but on second thought he determined
to try third time.
A./;a B./;/ C.a;a D.the;a
a third time表示“再试一次”,强
A3.She raised her finger to her lips as
for silence.
A.an idea B.a mark
C.a sign D.a word
象、征兆”,gesture or movement made with
the hand, head, etc, used to give
written or printed symbol or figure, line
etc. made as sign or an indication of
C。C4.AIDS is spreading all over the world at
shocking speed. Where its dark
appears, we see pain, tears and death.
A.shape B.shadow
C.ambition D.feeling
解析 由“at shocking speed”及“we see
B5.These trousers are dirty and wet—I’ll
change into my .
A.another B.trousers
C.others D.other
others相当于 other
trousers,其中的 other与前面的 these相对
照。C6.—What do you think of Spain?
—Well, considering its diverse cultures,
it is an attractive country, worthy
of a visit.
A.it B.one
C.this D.that
中,one=a country。B7.We already have pencils, but we need
two pens.
A.dozen of;dozen

D.dozens of;dozen of

C8.Two died of cold last winter.
A.hundreds old peoples
B.hundred old peoples
C.hundreds old people
D.hundred old people

D9.—Do you mean to play the hero in the play?
— .But it should be a character I like.
A.Not surprisingly
B.Not necessarily
C.Not importantly
D.Not absolutely
解析 B项意为“未必”;A项意为“不奇怪”;
B10.Mary is very clever and worth
teaching, but her brother is not. Look, he
is now asleep in class.
A.very;very B.much;very
C.well;very D.well;fast 解析 此题容易误选A,因为许多学生往往将汉语
very like English,而应说成I like English
very much,因为副词very 在英语中习惯上不用来
用well 和fast修饰,即说成be well worth doing
sth.(某事很值得被做),be fast (或sound)
asleep(熟睡),所以此题的最佳答案应选D。
B11.—Cinderella has been learning Chinese in
Beijing University for the past four
years.

A12.As the wolf is growing older and older,
it smells ,so sometimes he can’t
protect himself.
A.well B.bad
C.badly D.good
C13.We were all worried over you were
sick.
A.that B.which
C.what D.the fact that
the fact,此时 the fact用作介词的宾语,而
D14.We all regarded the poor old man
sympathy.
A.as B.with
C.of D.by
的as,马上就联想到 regard...as...
B15.Put yourself in situations where you’re
forced to communicate in English,
you’ll see more progress over time.
A.until B.or
C.but D.and

E–books or Printed Books?
Nowadays,e-books are getting popular.
Some computer experts even predict that the
printed books will die out some day.In my
opinion, printed books are a better choice.
Printed books have their advantages.
First, printed books make it easier for
search and research, because you can put
marks or notes during reading. You can even
go through several books at the same time
for related views, while with e-books,you would find it rather inconvenient because
computer screen is too small.Second,printed

less strain on your eyes.Your eyes are not

Life was exciting being the twin sister
of an adventurous two-year-old brother.We
lived in rural Mississippi where my life
seemed like a dream. That was until my dad
took my brother and me to live with my
grandmother. You see my grandma was seventy
years old then. She couldn’t keep up with
two little naughty (淘气的) children like
us. One of my aunts came and said,“Come and
go home with me.”The day we arrived,we saw
two tricycles in the den (书房).We rode the
tricycles happily for a while. And sure
enough,we ate rainbow-colored ice cream and
watched cartoons all the rest of that day in
the den.Everything exciting happened in the
den. From eight years old to my high school
graduation I was always sent into the den.
The den was the second largest room in the
house. In the den were Royal Blue Children’s
Encyclopedias (百科全书),red and white
holiday songbooks, and music books laying on
a piano stool. My aunt soon started to give
me piano lessons and expected me to practice. My aunt would always say,“Go into the
den!”I never realized why.I used to think
that she was mad at me because I was the
only one who had to go into the den.
If I asked if I could go and visit some
friends, she would ask me,“Have you finished
your homework or have you practiced your
songs yet?” Life in my aunt’s den proved to be
really rewarding to me.I used to think she
was mean but not as I look back.I can see
that she was trying to make me an
independent,talented,and knowedgeable
person.Unlike me,my twin brother did just
the opposite and now he has problems.

was so serious that even after eight hours
of sleep, she’d wake up tired and feel tired
all the day.The 52-year-old secretary was
from Mount Carmel,Illinois,and she thought
she was probably working too hard.A boring
thirst forced her to take a water bottle everywhere she went, but she thought that her

Then she decided to look for medical care.
A few days after the exam,Denise got a
call:Her blood showed some problem, and the
nurse wanted to see her right away. The
timing couldn’t have been worse,since
Denise’s daughter-in-law had gone into
labor early that morning, and Denise was
looking after her two-year-old granddaughter,Allyson. After putting the
child into a child seat, she drove to the
medical building and sat with the child in
the half-empty waiting room. She was excited
about the new baby coming—and apprehensive
about the test results. She’d just finished making a phone call
to check on her daughter-in-law when the
nurse asked her and Allyson to go into a
small exam room.Holding up the lab report,
she told Denise what was causing her

Some say everyday miracles(奇迹) are predestined(注定的)—the right time for the appointed meeting. And it can happen anywhere.
In 2001, 11-year-old Kevin Stephan was a bat boy for his younger brother’s Little League team in Lancaster, New York. It was an early evening in late July. Kevin was standing on the grass away from the plate, where another youngster was warming up for the next game. Swinging his bat back and forth, giving it all the power an elementary school kid could give. The boy brought the bat back hard and hit Kevin in the chest. His heart stopped.
When Kevin fell to the ground, the mother of one of the players rushed out of the stands to his aid. Penny Brown hadn’t planned to be there that day, but at the last minute, her shift(换班)at the hospital had been changed to see her son’s performance. She was given the night off. Kevin, now 18, was working in the kitchen when he heard people screaming, customers in confusion, employees rushing toward a table. He hurried into the main room and saw a woman there, her face turning blue, her hands at her throat. She was choking.
Quickly Kevin stepped behind her, wrapped his arms around her and clasped his hands. Then, using skills he’d first learned in Scouts. The food that was trapped in the woman’s throat was freed. The color began to return to her face.
“The food was stuck. I couldn’t breathe,” she said. She thought she was dying. “I was very frightened.”

As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画)of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more wide-spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”
“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(审美的)value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality.Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

Over 70 percent of the “double single-child couples” in China need help from their parents in taking care of their own kids, according to a recent survey.
“Women of China” magazine and a consulting company carried out a survey recently on young couples of the “single-child” generation, the Morning Post reports. The couples surveyed were around 29 and have been married for three years on average, with university education and monthly income of 4,000 yuan ($531). Among them, 43.5 percent have kids.
Results show that 71.9 percent of the young couples have help from their parents in taking care of their kids.
Grown up as the “single-child”, the only child in a family since the family planning policy was adopted in 1979, this generation depends much on their parents.
The parents of the “single-child” generation focused more on their children’s physical well-being rather than their attitudes and values, according to some psychologists.
The research also found that the “double single-child couples” follow a rather traditional value system.
Survey shows that 27.5 percent of them got married after dating for one to two years, 25.2 percent two to five years, and 20 percent didn’t tie the knot until dating for five years. Also, 30 percent of the couples were schoolmates, while 43.8 percent were introduced by someone.
Since their marriages are based on enduring relationships, 65.2 percent of the husbands and 62.9 percent of the wives think that compromise and tolerance are necessary in their marriage. Meanwhile, 21.7 percent of the husbands and 37.1 percent of the wives support the idea that happiness is the key standard for a marriage.

Most kids suffer from the common cold up to 10 times a year.Right now, there is no known cure for sniffles, sneezes, and coughs.
But help could be on the way.Scientists recently announced they have made some progress in finding a cure for the common cold. The rhinovirus (rhino is Greek for “nose”) causes more than 50 percent of most colds.A team of researchers from around the United States has decoded (解码) the 99 known strains,or types,of rhinovirus.
It turns out the virus that causes a simple cold is much more complicated than researchers once thought.Scientists have determined that you can have two separate strains of rhinovirus at the same time. Those strains can work together. The viruses can move their genetic material slowly inside your body. And if that happens,a whole new strain of virus gets created.
The rhinovirus’s ability to change like that makes one person’s cold different from another person’s.Therefore,it’s very difficult to develop an effective vaccine (疫苗) to fight it.But this new research does open the door for developing more effective ways to treat colds once a person has one.“We may have to have four or five drugs, and you’d need a test at your doctor’s office to know which drug will work.We are now quite certain that a very effective treatment for the common cold is at hand,” said Dr. Stephen B.Liggett,an author of the rhinovirus study.
Liggett also hopes that finding a way to fight rhinovirus will help people who suffer from asthma (哮喘).Common colds set off more than 50 percent of asthma attacks. So if colds can be cut short, then a major cause of asthma attacks is gone too.
But don’t put away the chicken soup just yet. There’s still lots of testing and development to be done before any of these cold “cures” can be available to the public.Drug development and government approval can take many years. So,for now, just keep washing your hands and get plenty of rest.Doctors say that’s the best way to stay away from the sniffles.

Visit Iceland and you’ll enter a whole new region of experience. You’ll discover original nature as you’ve never seen it before, and the equally original people for whom timeless nature, ancient heritage and modern lifestyle coexist in harmony. The freedom to wander in the city or wilds as you please is the key to the Iceland experience.
Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is just a part of the Icelandic experience with its midnight sun or the magical landscapes mixed with ice and fire. Reykjavik has a population of around 170,000 and offers an interesting mix of cosmopolitan (世界各地的) culture and local village roots.
Old accounts say the ancient gods themselves guided Iceland’s first settler to make his home in Reykjavik. He named the place Reykjavik (Steamy Bay) after the geothermal (地热) steam he saw, which today heats homes and outdoor swimming pools throughout the city, a pollution-free energy source that leaves the air outstandingly fresh, clean and clear.
A beautiful river runs through the city limits, and so do fine parks and even wild outdoor areas. In the outskirts (郊区) are places for horse trekking and golf. But against this backcloth of nature, Reykjavik has a packed program of familiar city joys too: art museums, several theaters, an opera house, a symphony orchestra and concerts meeting the needs of the whole spectrum of age and taste.
One must for all visitors is dining out on Icelandic specialties, including delicious seafood, ocean-fresh from the morning’s catch, highland lamb and unusual varieties of game. Its purely natural food imaginatively served to delight the most discerning (内行的) of diners. Reykjavik is also famous as one of Europe’s nightspots, where the action on the friendly pub and nightlife scene lasts right through the night. In the evening, the downtown area is filled with activities, reaching its peak on Friday or Saturday. The number of pubs, café, discos, and other night-spots in the downtown area is astonishing. There are a rich variety of places to go: European-style cafés and nightclubs with live entertainment, dance balls for seniors, sports-theme pubs with big TV screens, cafers that offer over 100 types of beer, an Irish pub, a Spanish café and a French wine bar.
Walking distances are short downtown, and everything worth seeing outside the city center can be quickly and conveniently reached by bus. With its long, easy-going main streets and large shopping malls, Iceland’s capital is a great place to shop too—with a bonus of tax-free shopping for visitors! Be careful not just for souvenirs (纪念品) (especially woolens and handicrafts ) but also for stylish consumer goods and designer labels at competitive prices.
A full range of accommodations (住宿) is available in Reykjavik, from international-standard hotels with good conference facilities, through smaller hotels and comfortable guesthouses, to a campsite in the city’s biggest park.

People turn to magic(魔力) chiefly as a form of insurance—that is, they use it along with actions that actually bring results. For example, hunters may use a hunting charm(咒语). But they also use their hunting skills and knowledge of animals. The charm may give hunters the extra confidence they need to hunt even more successfully than they would without it. If they shoot a lot of game(猎物), they credit the charm for their success. Many events happen naturally without magic. Crops grow without it, and sick people get well without it. But if people use magic to bring a good harvest or to cure a patient, they may believe the magic was responsible.
People also tend to forget magic’s failures and to be impressed by its surface successes. They may consider magic successful if it appears to work only 10 per cent of the time. Even when magic fails, people often explain the failure without doubting the power of the magic. They may say that the magician made a mistake in reciting the spell or that another magician cast a more powerful spell against the magician.
Many anthropologists(人类学家) believe that people have faith in magic because they feel a need to believe in it. People may turn to magic to reduce their fear and uncertainty if they feel they have no control over the outcome of a situation. For example, farmers use knowledge and skill when they plant their fields. But they know that weather, insects, or diseases might ruin the crops. So farmers in some societies may also plant a charm or perform a magic rite to ensure a good harvest.

A.magic powers are greater than natural powers

Receiving a phone call from the MacArthur Foundation can change a person’s life forever. In September 2009,the organization, based in Chicago,Illinois, told twenty-four people that they had been chosen for the yearly fellowship award. Each winner receives 500,000 dollars over five years. The organization sees the award as an investment in that person’s interesting work and future efforts.
Lawyers, doctors, writers and artists are among the winners of last year’s MacArthur Fellowship. The Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat is one of the winners. Her books describe the experiences of Haitian immigrants(移民).Danticat says the thing artists need most is time and that the award money will help her work greatly.
Several of last year’s fellows are scientists.Peter Huybers is a scientist at Harvard University. He uses math, physics and statistics(统计学)to study climate change patterns.Lin He at the University of California,Berkeley,is a biologist. She has made valuable discoveries about cell behavior that could lead to future cancer treatments.
Artists who won the fellowship include thirty-five-year-old photographer Lynsey Addario. She takes powerful pictures of people living in war-torn countries.Timothy Barrett of Iowa City.Iowa of the USA,is an artist and scientist. He is helping to record ancient paper traditions. He has also developed special kinds of paper to help people who work in the art and book industries.Elyn Saks is a legal expert who works to expand the rights of people with serious mental illness. Her personal experiences influence her work.
The MacArthur Foundation says this fellowship is not just an award for past success. It says the money is ensuring that these experts will do even more creative things in the future.

The State of Hawaii is a state of the United States, located on a group of islands in the central Pacific Ocean southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. The state was admitted to the Union on August 21st,1959,making it the 50th state. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The most recent census puts the state’s population at 1,211,537.
This state includes nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which is made up of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles. At the southeastern end of the group of islands, the eight “main islands” are Niihau,Kauai,Oahu,Molokai,Lanai,Kahoolawe,Maui, and Hawaii. The last by far the largest is often called the “Big Island” or “Big Isle” to avoid confusion with the state as a whole.
Hawaii’s tallest mountain,Mauna Kea stands at 13,796ft but is taller than Mount Everest if followed to the base of the mountain—on the floor of the Pacific Ocean.
All of the Hawaiian islands were formed by volcanoes erupting from a magma(岩浆)source described in geological theory as a hotspot. The theory maintains that as the plate beneath much of the Pacific Ocean moves in a northwesterly direction, the hot spot remains quiet, slowly creating new volcanoes. This explains why only volcanoes on the southern half of the Big Island, and the Loihi Seamount deep below the waters off its southern coast, are presently active, with Loihi being the newest volcano to form.
The last volcanic eruption outside the Big Island occurred at Haleakala on Maui in the late 18th century, though recent research suggests that Haleakala’s most recent eruption could be hundreds of years earlier.
Because of the islands’ volcanic formation, native life before human activity is said to have arrived by the “3W’s”:wind(carried through the air),waves(brought by ocean currents),and wings(birds, insects, and whatever they brought with them). The complete separation of the Hawaiian Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean from any continent, and the wide range of environments to be found on high islands located in and near the tropic(回归线),have resulted in a vast variety of plants and animals.Hawaii has more endangered species per square mile and has lost a higher percentage of its local species than anywhere else on Earth.

Dear Jim,
Thanks for your interest in my country’s traditional festivals. And I’m delighted to introduce The Dragon Boat Festival to you.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is one of the most significant traditional Chinese festivals. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to Chinese Lunar calendar.
The festival is said to be in honour of Qu Yuan, a great poet as well as one who tried all his best to help his own country but failed and committed suicide by drowning himself in Miluo River. The folks respected and loved him so much that they threw zongzi into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. Later it became a custom for people to eat zongzi and watch dragon boat races on that day.
Now we can have a one-day holiday on this festival when all family members can stay together and enjoy a big meal. As far as I am concerned, it is a chance for people not only to have a day to have fun, but also a day to recall the memories of our ancestors and to give thanks to the ones who have helped us. Although Qu Yuan was gone, his spirit will always live with us.
Yours,
Li Hua

Don’t complain in the NBA
The NBA has a new rule this season. It’s called “zero tolerance”.NBA referees are not letting players complain too long or too loudly about a referee’s call.A player who does can be given a technical foul(犯规).Two technical fouls, and the player is out of the game.
The players don’t like the new rule and want the NBA to change it.They think it’s only natural to get angry during a close,hard-fought game if a call goes against you.
But I like the “zero tolerance” rule and wish other sports would follow the NBA’s example.Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable if football, soccer and tennis players stopped arguing the calls and just played the game?
The biggest reason I like the new rule is that it sets a good example to younger players. When kids see stars such as Rasheed Wallace of the Detroit Pistons shouting at the referees and arguing every call, they think it’s part of the game. But shouting at referees and arguing calls should never be part of any kid’s games.Kids should be taught to forget about the referees’ calls and pay attention to improving their skills and play their best.
All players need to learn that you control only one thing in a game, and that’s your own performance. You can’t control what the other players or trainers do.And you certainly can’t control the calls the referees make.
Finally, everyone from NBA all-stars to 8-year-olds should remember that being a basketball referee is a hard job.The referee has to make dozens of sudden calls. No hesitation. No second chances. Not even the best referee gets every call right.
Maybe if the players, trainers and fans who shout at the referees had to wear a whistle and call a few games, there wouldn’t be as many complaints about the “zero tolerance” rule.
The new
Rule
The players are not 1.allowed/permitted to complain too much about a referee’s call,2.or/otherwise he might be 3.driven/put out of the court.
The players’ opinion
They 4.dislike/hate the new rule and wish it to be changed.
They think it’s natural for them to get angry during a close game if there is a call 5.going against them.
He likes the “zero-tolerance” rule and wishes it to be followed by other sports and it would be more enjoyable if players 6.stopped/quitted arguing the calls.
The new rule does 7.set a good example to younger players.
Shouting at referees and arguing calls shouldn’t be part of any kid’s games and kids should pay attention to 8.polishing up their skills and play their best.
All players can control nothing else except their own 9.performance.
Everyone should keep in mind that it’s 10.difficult/hard to be a basketball judge.

Motor skills are divided into two areas:fine motor skills and gross motor skills.Fine motor skills are what give a child the ability to handle small objects.Fine motor skills are required for things like drawing, writing, cutting and other more complex tasks.Gross motor skills use more of the larger muscles along with balance and coordination(协调).These skills give young children the ability to run, walk, jump, roll, hop and make other larger physical movements.Motor skills are an extremely important part in your child’s early childhood. Some statistics say that approximately 15% of students attending primary schools experience motor difficulties. Also the ratio of boys to girls with a motor disability is 3∶1.These statistics are surprising but an even more shocking statistic is one that says 60% of students also have problems in areas such as speech, short attention span(持续时间),poor listening, poor self-concept,unacceptable behavior and general learning problems.A child can also be affected socially from lack of motor skills by being separated or by having low self-respect.
Despite all these negative statistics there is no need for your child to fall behind. In fact you can help your child do just the opposite. There really are so many ways you can help your child develop in the area of motor skills. To help their fine motor skills encourage them to play with things such as play dough, blocks, puzzles, and painting. All these activities can help in the development of your child’s fine motor skills because tasks like these require hand and finger coordination. For the improvement of gross motor skills you can do something as simple as taking your child for a hike, let them climb the monkey bars at the playground,or play a sport in which you strike a ball like golf, tennis or baseball. These activities can significantly improve your child’s balance and focus.
There is a wide variety of toys made specifically for children with developmental problems. The popular Latches Board contains six types of latches that open to doors showing different colors, shapes and numbers.Another activity board called the Basic Skills board consists of things like zippers, buttons, clasps(扣环),strings and belts. This board in particular can benefit a child because it teaches them the fine motor skills that they will need to perform basic skills that they’ll use in their everyday life. For gross motor skills there’s a product called Sensory Stepping Stones. These stepping stones are individual in color and texture(手感).The varied color and texture gives the child the sensory benefits while also increasing balance and coordination. All these toys are especially beneficial because your child while having fun is also learning without even knowing.

These pictures remind me of what sometimes may happen in the street. One day, when a child and his father wanted to go to the toy store across the street. The father decided not to go across the zebra crossing as it was a bit far away from where they were.He said,“We can cross from here.Look, follow me.”He jumped over the traffic railing and landed on the fast lane.He was just about to encourage the child to do the same when a policeman came over. The pliceman criticized his irresponsible and dangerous behaviour and fined him.The father lowered his head and admitted that he was wrong.
As we know the father is his son’s closest role model. If the father is irresponsible,he may have a bad influence on his son.Parents shuld be a good example for their children so that they will grow up to become good citizens.

Tuberculosis(TB,肺结核)killed 1,300,000 people around the world in 2007.In addition, almost half a million people who were infected with tuberculosis and with HIV also died. Those were listed as HIV deaths.
About one-third of all people are infected with tuberculosis. But the body’s natural defenses are usually strong enough to prevent an active case.Even so,the bacteria remain in the body.If the immune system weakens at any point, they begin to spread and then attack.
The bacteria that cause TB usually settle in the lungs. They spread through the air when the person coughs or even sings and talks.
One of the most important things is to identify cases quickly. The patients need to be kept away from other people and begin treatment as soon as possible.
Multidrug resistant tuberculosis(耐多药肺结核),or MDR-TB,will not get better with antibiotics(抗生素)normally used for tuberculosis. So doctors must use stronger, “second line” drugs when the first ones fail.
Now,researchers say they have found a much faster way to identify drug-resistant TB.The study’s lead author is Graham Hatfull at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania.
The scientists used viruses called bacteriophages(噬菌体)to speed the process. These viruses attack bacteria. The researchers injected them with a gene that produces green light. They also injected some with first line antibiotics and others with second line drugs.
Then they combined the bacteriophages with TB bacteria. If the bacteria produces green light,it means they are drug-resistant.The researchers say a clinic worker could identify the green light with equipment easy to get in many clinics.Test results would not have to wait for the bacteria to grow in a laboratory far away. For now,the test itself needs more testing. But Professor Hatfull is hopeful this will take months and not years.

From the beginning of human history, people have used oils from seeds and nuts. Most of the time these oils are used as food, especially in cooking. But sometimes they have other uses. For example, oils are used in paint and in cleaning products like soap.
Oils are separated from seeds by using pressure.A machine called a press is often used.
The first step in pressing the oil from seeds is to crush the seeds between two stones. The crushed seeds are then put into a cloth bag and the bag is hung up.Some of the oil will flow out of the bag and can be collected.
But some oils will remain in the crushed seeds inside the bag.The easiest way to get the rest of the oil out is to place heavy rocks on the crushed material.
Another method is to place several cloth bags on top of each other in a box. Then a long wooden stick is used to slowly push a heavy cover down on the bags.Great pressure is produced in this way.Much greater pressure can be produced by using a machine,a hydraulic jack(液压千斤顶).The greater the pressure is,the more oils will be produced.
Small presses are important in areas where electricity or gasoline cannot be used. They are also a good way to test if a local market for oils exists.
Small batch presses can be made of local materials.Their cost is low. They are not difficult to operate. And they are easy to repair. The small presses produce good quality oils. But the work is hard. And getting all the oil from the seeds can be difficult.
If there is a large supply of seeds, then hand-operated presses may not be enough to support a business.Large powered presses that can operate all day are needed.

Do They Have to Say Thanks?
Do they have to say thanks? Some people say yes. They think when others donate money to us,we should be thankful. After all,it’s not others’ duty to help us.Besides,if people continue helping the five students, they will take it for granted. As a result, they will become selfish.
Others, however, think the students need not say thanks. They think saying “thanks” in words is not the only way to show appreciation.Studying hard and doing something in return for society in the future are the best way to show their thanks. On the other hand, helping others is a kind of happiness.
In my opinion, maybe some students are not good at expressing their feelings. But when getting help, they should say “Thank you”.

Being a good neighbor matters—not only because it makes life more pleasant, but also because being a good neighbor is part of being a good person.
Being a good neighbor has a lot to do with respecting privacy. It’s often best to mind your own business, give neighbors a lot of space and try to sense when it’s appropriate to back off.But it’s just as important to know when the time is right to give a hand.Helping with physical work is one good way to establish trust. If your neighbor is going to be moving some heavy furniture,or needs help fixing something you know your way around, offer to help out.Once you’re getting familiar, this assistance can also extend to things like housesitting or collecting the mail while your neighbor is away.If you have a close relationship with your neighbors, the day may come when you’re asked to take care of their kids.Should you accept, you’ll probably end up playing with and entertaining these children.
It should go without saying that pet owners need to care for their animals properly. This includes cleaning up after them. There are few things more annoying for neighbors than a dog that uses their lawns(草坪)as a toilet,or that barks endlessly while clained up in a backyard.Don’t mess around—be a kind and responsible pet owner.
There are times when a certain level of noise is fine and there are times when it isn’t—and it’s good to know the difference.Turn the music down a bit after sundown, and further reduce the volume as it gets toward 10 pm.It’s usually fine to throw an occasional load party as long as the neighbors are invited or have been informed.

Nowadays people use different ways to communicate with each other. And does one always tell the truth when he or she talks with the other on the phone?Or does one sometimes tell a lie when writing an e-mail or giving an instant message?Recent research has found that communication technologies are far from equal when it comes to conveying the truth. The first study, made by Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca,New York,to compare honesty across a range of communication media has found that people are twice as likely to tell lies in phone conversations as they are in e-mails.The fact that e-mails are automatically recorded—and can come back to trouble you—appears to be the key to the finding.
Jeff Hancock made an investigation by asking 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week.In it they noted the number of conversations or e-mail exchanges they had lasting more than 10 minutes, and how many lies they told.Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14 per cent of e-mails,21 per cent of instant messages,27 per cent of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37 per cent of phone calls.
His results,to be presented at the conference on human computer interaction in Vienna,Austria,in April, have surprised psychologists. Some expected e-mailers to be the biggest liars, reasoning that because the unreal condition makes people uncomfortable, the detachment of e-mailing would make it easier to lie.Others expected people to lie more in face-to-face exchanges because people are more practiced at that form of communication.
But Hancock says it is also very important and effective whether a conversation is being recorded and could be reread, and whether it occurs in real time.People appear to be afraid to lie when they know that they will be responsible for what they have said in the conversation,he says. This is why fewer lies appear in e-mails than on the phone.
People are also more likely to lie in real time—in an instant message or phone call, say—than if they have time to think of a response, says Hancock. He found many lies are sudden or immediate responses to demands that they don’t expect, such as “Do you like my dress?”
Hancock hopes his research will help business companies work out the best ways for their employees to communicate. For instance, the phone might be the best medium for selling their products where employees are encouraged to stretch the truth. But when giving results, work assessment, where honesty is regarded as more important than others,it might be best by using e-mails.

Traditionally, customers may consider more about what they buy the product for. However, the image of product and the consuming circumstance have become the key points to attract customers’ awareness and stimulate their buying needs.Frequently, customers buy goods just because they are cute, lovely and unique. With a less emphasis on functional utilities, the experience and imaginative space are placed into an increasingly important role. The image of product is emphasized,as well as the communication between products and consumers.“Customer behavior, which appears to be focused and directed at the object and at pleasure,in fact responds to quite different objectives:displaced expression of desire, and the production of a code of social values through the use of differential signs”(Baudrillard). The reason for image-oriented customer behavior is probably that customers’ lifestyle has been continuously virtualized by paying much attention to “Virtual Reality”.The evidences can be traced from computer games and Hollywood movies,in which customers’ preference for fleeing reality is perfectly matched.
This change requires us to take efforts to enhance product image by integrating style, color, taste, shape and material, and communicate with customers creatively, imaginatively and innovatively, and enable them to enjoy the distinctive experience image brings.“A need is not a need for a particular object as much as it is a ‘need’ for difference.”(Baudrillard)The typical example is Apple Computer’s IMAC,which has strong visual impact and outstanding dynamics.By this way, customer relationship can be set up through image, and brand can be treated as living that can transform people.Other examples commonly used are Disney Fairland and Las Vegas, where new experience and imagination are fully demonstrated. In sum, consumption is negotiation,a never-ending conversation held in the languages of advertising, packaging, branding, fashion, and entertainment.

The earth’s ocean can reach depths of up to 11,000 metres. That is deep enough to cover Mount Qomolangma!Marine(海洋的)scientists divide the oceans into five zones. Each zone is different mainly as a result of how much sunlight reaches it.
Most of the life in the ocean can be found in the first zone, which begins at the surface and goes down to about 200 metres.Because there is sunlight at this level, plants are able to grow.Marine animals such as dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and sea lions, and of course a variety of fish, live in the sunlight part of the ocean. It is difficult to hide from other animals in the area, but many species have adapted by becoming dark on the top and light on the bottom. This makes it hard to see them against the dark water below and the blue sky above.
The second starts at 200 metres and goes down to about 1,000 metres. Some sunlight can reach this level, but it is not enough for plants to grow.Because this zone is relatively dark, many of the creatures that live here are able to make light with their body. The light from these animals makes the water look like a sky with moving stars in it.
The third zone is dark. This place, about 3,000 metres deep, may not seem a likely habitat(栖息地),but there are more creatures here than one might think. Most of the animals that live here are black or red because of the lack of light. At this depth,a slow shower of what looks like snow is falling. This phenomenon, called “marine snow”,is actually nutrients falling towards the bottom of the ocean. It is a source of food for the creatures that live in the deep.
Below 4,000 metres, the temperature is near freezing and there is no light at all.In fact, the zone is so dark and empty that scientists named this zone after the Greek word for “no bottom”.There is not much life to be found in this cold and unpleasant part. But some creatures manage to survive here despite high water pressure.
The very deepest part of the ocean is 2,000 metres further down.At this depth, the water pressure is extremely high and life is very difficult for the few creatures that live here.Compared to the other zones, this one has very little life.Since there is no light here, some animals don’t have eyes. When scientists explored the very deepest parts of the ocean, they did not expect to find any life at all.It turned out that there are creatures as far down as 10,000 metres. They usually survive by living close to deep sea vents,“chimneys” that send out gases from within the earth.

With the development of society, people’s living standard has been greatly improved. But from our survey of the neighborhood relationship,we get a surprising result.
85 percent of the people surveyed have no idea of their neighbors’ hobbies.80 percent fail to know their neighbor’s names while 70 percent have never visited their neighbors. The reasons for the phenomenon are varied.
First, people now are living so busy a life that they seldom visit their neighbors.Secondly, living in high buildings provides people with an independent space, which to some extent decreases the connection between neighbors. As a result, although people live in the same neighborhood, they seem to be strangers.
As we know, good neighborhood can make everyone feel happy and harmony. What’s more, people in good neighborhood are more likely to help each other, which will benefit all the residents in the same community.

“Four Tigers” Ceremony of the Tu Minority
Heigouding Village,Ledu County in the west of Qinghai Province is a place where many people of the Tu minority have lived for centuries. As the little village is comparatively closed to the outside world,a custom called “Four Tigers” was created 200 years ago to protect its inhabitants(居民)from sickness and bad luck.
Every year the ceremony is held on the eve of January 15th according to the Chinese lunar calendar to frighten off ghosts and evil souls, and to pray for peace.
Normally four local villagers are selected to be the “tigers” in the ceremony. At first, they gathered with village elders at the mountain-god temple to offer sacrifices of wine, food and incense, and to ask the god to help the tigers. Then the tigers were adorned with herbs, candles and two batches of incense to serve as the tiger’s ears. Two red ribbons held in their mouths represented the tiger’s tongue. The tigers drank wine, knelt and kowtowed to the mountain god before they received Hada,a kind of white silk scarf representing respect and good luck, from the village head with firecrackers crackling.
As night fell, the candles on the tigers’ bodies were lit and the tigers began their visits to one household after another.Villagers followed, shouting “Tigers are coming!”The elder from each household welcomed the tigers at the gate, while the rest of the family knelt down in the courtyard.Firecrackers were set off,a toast was made and candies, meat and wine were presented to the villagers following the tigers. After twirling(快速转动)in three circles in the courtyard while those present kowtowed and prayed, the tigers went through every corner of every room to drive away any hiding ghosts. If there was a sick person in the house, the tigers jumped around him or her, scratched their body and said lucky words to drive away diseases and ghosts. After the ceremony, the family would present wine and food to the tigers. Then, shouting “The tigers are leaving!” the whole family saw them off.
After visiting all 30 or 40 households, the herbs were removed from the tigers and burned,to indicate that all the ghosts had been conquered. Then the villagers knelt and kowtowed with the sound of firecrackers, marking the end of the ceremony.
The tiger image exists in other minority groups, too. In ancient times, people entrusted their happiness to gods. The “Four Tigers” ceremony is vividly held in memory of ancient times and a living fossil for academics studying the lives of ancient people. As it is not popular nowadays, this cultural heritage is on the edge of extinction and needs to be rescued.

What do you do in a typical day?Do you have control of your time or does time have control over you?Look at the activities and time spent on each to learn how to effectively manage your time.
The first thing you need to do is construct a “Necessary List” to take control of your time.On this list are the necessary things that must be done and the amount of time that each activity takes. This might include a part-time or full-time job, commuting to and from the workplace or school, and time for meals.Don’t forget to write down your family events, because these cannot be moved to a later date. These are things that you cannot cut out from your average day,so set this time aside in advance.
The next thing to do is write a Need-to-Do list of things you need to get done.Write out a daily, weekly and monthly schedule. On this list include such things as grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning the house, mowing(割草)the lawn, and other housework. These are things that are necessary, but they are not fixed,so you can move them around and do them whenever you have time to get them done. Then you should arrange these tasks based on importance.
Last is an “Unessential List”.Write down how much time you honestly spend watching television, reading magazines or books and surfing the Internet. You do need time for entertainment, but you should know that a necessary task might suffer because of the amount of time you are spending on something that is considered to be a waste of time.Cut out the activities that are truly unnecessary if you don’t have enough time to do other important things.
Finally, put all of this down on a chart so that you can see it easily.Write out a schedule in 15 minutes so that you can easily check what you have to do that day.

The 2010 Spring Festival Gala has set records for TV commercial rates, which accordingly has caused heated discussions due to product placement in the programmes.
As is shown in the pie chart,20% of the people surveyed think it acceptable, for the product placement appears in the programmes naturally. And 15% of them consider it necessary for CCTV to make money from product placement, which is of great benefit to the development of CCTV itself.
However, among the people surveyed, more than one third of them complain that the product placement has nothing to do with the programmes.25% of them even feel hurt seeing so much of it.Furthermore, the rest 10% hold the view that great harm has been done to the image of CCTV.
From the pie chart we can draw a conclusion that most of the people surveyed are against product placement in the programmes. In my opinion, product placement nowadays is almost unavoidable, but it should not damage the art of the show and should take the audience’s feelings into account.

Dear Jim,
Thanks for your interest in my country’s traditional festivals.
Yours,
Li Hua

My parents passed away ten years ago and I miss them terribly. But I know they are with me every day in what they taught me and in the
1 they gave me.Every morning my father’s message to me was:Remember that 2 you walk out of this door, you carry responsibility, the good name of this family, the hopes and dreams of your mom and dad.My mother often urged me to 3 the high standards she set for me.
When I was in high school,I played in a rock band with friends in my class. We were devoted and practiced constantly. We moved past the guys-in-a-garage stage and 4 to be pretty good, doing getting-paid gigs (演奏会) most weekends, which made me 5 .At that time, though part of me was 6 up in that band, another part of me was the oldest son in the Clark family, 7 of my origin and a dedicated student busy applying to colleges.Without even telling my parents,I applied to Harvard.I didn’t think I had much chance of getting in, 8 I wanted to try.So I was riding around being Mr. Cool Rock Musician half of the time, and the other half I was focused on family and 9 goals.I was running on parallel 10 .
When the group won a citywide Battle of the Bands, things heated up.My bandmates had stars in their eyes—we might be able to make it big. However,I began to feel 11 .I realized I was on quite different tracks:I 12 was becoming two people, 13 identities back and forth depending on who I was with.I had to make an option. As I considered my 14 ,my parents’ words were right there, helping me to see that my dreams weren’t about signing a record deal, letting my hair grow, and living in a tour bus.So I 15 out.My bandmates were 16 .They thought I was crazy to withdraw 17 the peak of real success. But however successful that band got,I knew it wasn’t in line with my 18 ,with my feeling of what I was 19 to do,with who I was—it simply wasn’t me.
In that instant and in many others throughout my life,my parents’ advice has helped me recenter and 20 .I could remember who I was—the hopes and dreams I carried.

Some of the largest, longest, and most beautiful bridges in the world are suspension bridges.Although suspension bridges look impressively complicated, their design is relatively simple.Giant cables are strung between two towers that are anchored (固定) to land on either side of a waterway or land gorge. The road hangs from the giant cables by suspension cables,or suspenders.Suspenders are made by weaving together thousands of thick steel strands.
Even though these superstructures are built to last, many of American suspension bridges are getting old.The Golden Gate Bridge is slightly more than 70 years old.The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City celebrated its 125th birthday in 2008.Many of these superstructures are in need of super repairs.
Engineers at Columbia University in New York City have set out to create a way to detect the lifespan of a suspension cable electronically. They are testing a system in which tiny sensors are embedded (嵌入) inside cable strands to monitor a suspender’s condition around the clock.
Engineer Raimondo Betti and his team at Columbia built a lab last December. They will use heat lamps to simulate the temperature changes a suspender would have to endure through changing seasons. They will shower the test cable with water and road salt to see how it withstands rain and snow conditions. In addition to blasting the suspender with severe weather conditions, the engineers are also subjecting the cable to the same kind of weight of a suspender on a high-traffic bridge would have to bear. The team will record data from the sensors over the next six months. After that, they will open the cable and see the extent to which the data they’ve recorded matches the actual damage to the cable.
Betti says more accurate information on cable corrosion will be of great use to cities and states.Bridge owners will be able to make more informed decisions on maintenance and repair plans for bridges.

Almost 40 years ago,a community service organization started providing eye care in Gujarat State,in western India.
The Rotary Club of Navsari operates an eye hospital and 9 area eye centers in and around Navsari, whose services are for the poorest people. The group opened the hospital, the Rotary Eye Institute of Navsari,in 1970.India has only about one ophthalmologist for every 120,000 people. The Institute, however, has ten such specially trained eye doctors. It has restored or improved the eyesight of thousands of patients. Many people with eye problems cannot easily get to a big city for examinations and treatment. They live in villages and have no transportation. The Institute established eye centers called camps in places far from the city.Teams from it travel as far as 150 kilometers to see patients.People go to their nearest camp, where medical workers examine their eyes. The workers look for conditions including glaucoma (青光眼),night blindness and other problems. Some people are found to have cataracts(白内障),abnormal growths on the eye that can lead to loss of eyesight.India has about 13 million people with the condition.Cataract patients get free operations to correct the problem.
Rotary groups also operate eye banks.Doctors at these centers replace damaged eyes with the healthy eyes of donors who have just died. One such center is the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank.It operates in cooperation with the Rajan Eye Care Hospital in Chennai. The Eye Bank opened in 1996.Hundreds of patients have received new corneas from donors since then. The cornea is the clear front part of the eye that transmits light.2 million people in India are blind because of problems of the cornea. The Rotary Rajan Eye Bank holds continuing eye donation campaigns. It urges people to leave the gift of sight to others when they die.

Archaeologists said Stonehenge,Britain’s most famous prehistoric monument, may have been an ancient pilgrimage (朝圣) site for the sick who believed its stones had healing qualities.
It has always been a mystery why bluestones, the smaller stones that form part of the circle, were transported around 155 miles from Preseli Hills in Wales to Wiltshire in southern England.Archaeologists from Bournemouth University, who carried out the dig in April—the first at Stonehenge since 1964—believe the bluestones were respected as healing stones.“It was the magical qualities of these stones that transformed the monument and made it a place of pilgrimage for the sick and the injured of the Neolithic world (新石器时代),” a statement from the archaeologist team said.
Geoffrey Wainwright, president of the Society of Antiquaries of London and one of the experts leading the work, said that one reason which led to the conclusion was that a number of the burials around Stonehenge showed signs of injury and disability.
The archaeologists said in the statement that radio-carbon dating (放射性碳测年法) put the construction of the circle of bluestones at between 2400 B.C. and 2200 B.C.,a few centuries later than originally thought. But they found pieces of charcoal dating from before 7000 B.C.,showing humans were active in the area much earlier than previously thought.
During the dig,the researchers also found Roman ceramics (陶器) and ancient stone hammers.“We now know, much to our surprise and delight, that Stonehenge was not just a prehistoric monument, but it was a Roman and mediaeval (中世纪的) monument,” said Wainwright.
Another of the team leaders,Tim Darvill of Bournemouth University, said the bluestones appeared to be the most important to the purpose of Stonehenge although it may have had more than one fun_ction.Other theories about Stonehenge are that it was a religious site or that it acted as a calendar.

A.many pieces of charcoal were found around Stonehenge
B.radio-carbon dating was used to check the bluestones
C.many bodies of the sick and the injured were found buried around Stonehenge
D.humans were active around Stonehenge before 7000 B.C.
4.________ could prove that Stonehenge was not only a prehistoric monument but a Roman and mediaeval monument.

It’s time to stop complaining about the economy. Here’s why.At no other time in the recent history has it been easier or cheaper to start a new kind of company, possibly a very profitable company.Let’s call these start-ups LILOs,short for “a little in,a lot out”.These are Web-based businesses that cost almost nothing to get off the ground yet can turn into great moneymakers. In addition, launching such a company now will make your company stronger later—you’ll learn to survive in hard times until the economy improves.
That’s what John Tayman is doing. He’s an author who lives in San Francisco, where I met him;he wrote reviews for a business magazine I edited.Tayman knew little about technology and even less about business, but he dreamed of a website that would summarize car reviews from other sources and rank every model of new cars.
Tayman said he intended to build the site on the side while continuing to write for a living. He worked on his new company only at night and on weekends.Oh,yes,he had only about $ 10,000. “Good luck with that!” I thought.Ideas are much easier to hatch than they are to execute.
Tayman went to work with nothing more than his PowerBook laptop. On a website called 37 signals.com he learned about the virtues of lightweight programming languages like Ruby on Rails, which are ideal for the project he planned. He visited the RentACoder.com and Elance.com where you can find software developers. He picked up the special terms he needed to describe his project so he could put it out for a bid,and he found his first programmer—in Ukraine—who agreed to start building the digital scaffolding (脚手架) for the site.Within months,Tayman had 20 employees working for him in five different countries.“In fact,I hadn’t even met the guy who built most of the site until the launch party,” he says.
MotorMouths.com went live in January.Tayman figures he works about 10 hours a week on it and hasn’t spent a cent on marketing or advertising.Growth is modest but steady—nearly 10,000 people visit each week,he says, all of whom get there by the word of mouth and via a software “bot” that lets users of Twitter, the popular micromessaging service, request reviews.
The cost to Tayman?“Almost $ 9,800,all in,” he said.As for revenue,he just sold his first display ad,for, well, the low three figures.“But it’s a start, and we’ve already reached ‘ramen profitability’.” He spends about $ 75 a month on server fees and other expenses.
The term “ramen profitable” was coined by Paul Graham,a Silicon Valley start-up investor. It means that your start-up is self-sustaining and can create enough profit to keep you alive on instant noodles while your business gains strength.

A.It requires a large amount of money to launch a company.
B.It can enjoy many governments’ favorable policies.
C.The cost to launch a company is low but the profit can be high.
D.It doesn’t need any space or money to establish a company.
2.What is Tayman doing for a living now?
A.Offering new ideas to business companies.
B.Writing reviews for a business magazine.
C.Improving the design of modern cars.
D.Applying new technology to car production.
3.According to the passage,“Ruby on Rails” might be ________.
A.a lightweight programming language
B.a new type of PowerBook laptop
C.a website to find software developers
D.a website for foreign language learning
4.What website has Tayman launched?
A.37signals.com. B.MotorMouths.com.

A.The profit comes from selling instant noodles.
B.The profit is much bigger than the investment.
C.The profit decreases with increases in the cost of living.
D.The profit is only enough to sustain the company.

Born in a fishing village in Japan,Fujiyama,25,recalls a childhood dominated by health concerns.Doctors told his parents that he had a hole in his heart and “they didn’t think I had a lot longer to live”.But during a later visit to the doctor, his family learned the hole had closed.“Som-
ehow I was cured and I became a normal kid,” Fujiyama says.“And I had a second chance.”
During his second year at the University of Mary Washington,he volunteered in Honduras with a campus group and was struck by the extreme poverty he saw—barefoot children collecting cans and sleeping in the streets.Fujiyama realized he could help give other children their own second chance.
Today, his organization,Students Helping Honduras, brings education and community projects to children and families in need.
He started by telling his friends about his experience and collecting spare change at his two campus jobs.“When I had my very first meeting, only two people showed up,”he says.“I knew I had to keep fighting.”He persuaded his younger sister,Cosmo,to join the cause.“She’s dynamite,”he says.“When she talks in front of a crowd, she can move mountains.Knowing that she was behind it,I knew I could do anything.”Since 2006,the siblings’ organization has grown to 25 campuses and raised more than $750,000 to fund projects, including the construction of two schools and the esablishment of scholarships to help young women attend college.
Fujiyama says students are deeply committed to the organization. They raise money and then travel to Honduras to help build houses. While Fujiyama spends his summers in Honduras working alongside volunteers,he spends a large portion of the year on the road visiting colleges to raise funds.Cosmo Fujiyama,23,lives in Honduras full time to coordinate (协调) the group’s building efforts on the ground.
Students Helping Honduras is working with community members of Siete de Abril to build a new village. Many of the families lost their belongings in Hurricane Mitch in 1998.A lot of them didn’t have access to clean water or health care, and they didn’t have a school.Fujiyama’s group helped build 44 homes in the village named “Sunshine Village”.The organization is also raising funds to build a water tower,an eco-friendly sanitation system and a library.

“What kind of Thanksgiving can I provide?” I said to myself.Living in a small house and still jobless,I 1 to make ends meet.
Still,I counted my blessing (知足) when I 2 that a young family in a nearby home lost 3 to a flash fire.I watched as the entire community went to their 4 :A church provided shelter;others gathered food, bedding and clothing.Lines of busy people willingly gave their time 5 their money.
The afternoon before Thanksgiving, two women came to our house 6 donations (捐赠物品).Although we had 7 to spare,I helped early items to their car, 8 in my heart to give more.
As we stood 9 chatting,my little Helen, only three, shouted,“Wait!Don’t anybody move.” She rushed into the house, complaining,“We 10 something!”
I looked apologetically at the ladies, but 11 I could follow her,Helen was back outside, carrying her 12 toy bear, which I had made for her birthday just two months before.
“Mommy,” her green eyes searched my 13 ,“the little girl doesn’t have any toys.I have to give it to her.”
My heart quaked.I thought about the few 14 Helen had and how many hours I had spend sewing (缝) this one.Now she wanted to 15 it away.We stood in silence, the ladies 16 at me.I struggled with my feelings.I thought of all the things we needed and didn’t have.

And I 20 my own heart would never be as big as the one pounding (砰砰地跳) in my daughter’s little chest.

A huge cloud of dust rose and an overpass disappeared. This was the scene in Zhuzhou,Hunan Province on May 17.Nine people were killed and 16 injured.
Things were similar last year in the Sichuan earthquake.Thousands of people were buried in the ruins and lost their lives. What if we could have warned them?
People are always racking their brains to find a way of preventing buildings’ collapse.Better materials and technology help, but they are not a solution.
Just like humans,a building has its own life cycle from “birth” to “death”.If we know when a building is going to collapse,we can repair it in advance or get out of it before it falls.
Now,scientists at the University of Illinois have developed a material that turns red before it breaks. The invention could be used in things like climbing ropes or bridge supports.
The research was led by Nancy Sottos,a professor at the university’s Beckman Institute, and Douglas Davis,a graduate research assistant.
The secret behind the color-changing material is a type of molecule (分子).A molecule is a group of atoms held together by chemical bonds.Imagine you and your friends standing in a circle, holding hands. Each person stands for one atom, your hands represent the bonds, and the entire circle represents a molecule. If one person lets go of his or her hands, the molecule changes color.
The research team put the molecule into a soft material. When the researchers stretched the material,it turned bright red for a few seconds before it broke into two pieces. When they repeatedly stretched and relaxed the material, without breaking it,it only turned a little red.
The major problem is that light can get rid of the red color. When the team shone bright light on the molecule, the broken bond was fixed, and the color disappeared.
If the bright light keeps the red color from appearing, the material’s warning system will be useless.Scientists still have a lot of work to do before the color-changing molecules can be used outside the lab.
1.What does the passage mainly introduce?
A.The collapse of an overpass in Zhuzhou,Hunan Province.
B.The Sichuan earthquake last year.
