The Venus flytrap is a very strange plant. It grows in dry parts of the United States. Its leaves are like the pages of a book. They can open and close very quickly. Inside the leaves, there are three small hairs. If a fly touches one of the hairs, the leaf closes quickly. The fly cannot get out. In about half an hour, the leaf presses the fly until it is dead. Then, the plant covers the fly. Slowly, the plant eats the fly.

Years ago, if a person has some problems in his life, he might go home and write in his diary. Now he might go onto the Internet and write about them in a blog.
Differences between a blog and a diary
Usually, a person thinks of his diary as a book full of secrets. He does not want to share. But in the blog, anyone can read what he writes.
I have a little sister, and sometimes I go onto the Internet to read her blog. She writes about swimming practice and not studying enough for her chemistry exam. When I was her age, I wrote about the same things, but only in my diary. Then, after I finished writing, I would put my diary in a secret place because I was worried that my sister might read it!
Problems with blogging
The biggest problem with blogging is that anyone can read what you write. If I was angry with a friend and wrote something bad about her in my diary, she would never know. However, if my sister wrote something bad about a friend, that friend might read her blog and get angry.
Because we do not always think about things carefully before we write about our days, it is easy to hurt others’ feeling in a blog. So we have to be very careful about what we write.
Keeping in touch with friends
Blogging has both good and bad points, of course. People choose to blog because they know that their friends will read what they write.
If I was feeling sad one day and wrote in my diary “Nobody cares about me,” no one would know about it. However, if my sister wrote the same sentence in her blog, her best friends would quickly reply and tell her how much they like her. Blogs help people keep in touch with(保持联系) their friends and know what the people around them are doing.
Blogs are a very good way to write about daily life, if people are careful about what they write. However, I still like writing better in my diary!
62. What's the difference between blogs and diaries according to the passage
A. Blogs can be read by others while diaries only by writers themselves.
B. Blogs are used by young people while diaries are kept by old people.
C. Blogs are always good while diaries are sometimes bad for writers.
D. Blogs are a good way to write about life while diaries about other things.
1. It is easy to hurt others’ feeling in blogs, because people ________.
A. usually write about their daily life there B. only write something bad about others there
C. don’t always think carefully before writing there D. play jokes there on each other and care about them
2. What is the biggest problem with blogging
A. Help people keep in touch with their friends. B. Your friends will quickly reply to your blog.
C. Someone may read your blog and get angry with you.
D. Anyone can read what you write.
3. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. the writer will choose to blog so that others can keep in touch with him
B. the writer would rather keep diaries than write in a blog
C. the writer has never blogged because he hates blogging
D. the writer doesn't like his sister’s writing in a blog

The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70 percent(百分比)of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97 percent of this huge amount is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3 percent-the fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources(资源). And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers(冰川). Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing(增加)rapidly-almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid(避免)a severe(严重的)worldwide water shortage later on.
We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop ways of reusing it.
Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system(下水道). From there it returns to the sea or runs into underground storage tanks. But it is possible to pipe used water to a purifying(净化)plant. There it can be treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just as if it were fresh from a spring.
But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of the vast reserves(贮备)of sea water in the world is to remove the salt.
If we take these steps we’ll be in no danger of drying up.

Writing is not a skill to get easily. If you want to write something, you need to organize and express ideas in your mind and then get the muscles (肌肉) in your hands and fingers to form those ideas, word by word, on paper.
Now many people have poor handwriting, especially the pupils. The letters they write are not tidy and might be sized or spaced (分隔) incorrectly. The capital letters might be in the wrong places. Spelling problems can always be seen in their writing. Sometimes they themselves can’t understand the words they wrote.
Some experts think it is not good for the children to learn to write too early. The muscles in their fingers are not strong enough; their hands may feel painful or tired when they write. So the experts suggest that the parents and teachers should not let them to write too much at the beginning. Children should do some special exercises to make the muscles in their hands strong enough. And doing like this can improve their memory. To keep their hands, bodies or paper in a proper position is also necessary.

Can you protect our Planet Earth You may think it impossible, but you can begin by taking some small, but important, first steps. Many children and their classes in the USA are starting some projects.
Children Campaign Against Waste
Children are paying attention to the packaging (包装) of the things they buy. Packaging includes all the things you throw away when you unwrap anything new. One third of all rubbish is packaging. Mrs. Perez’s 4th grade class decides to make their school and neighborhood know the waste in packaging. They want people to think before they buy. They also want to let people who make the products know that they want less waste in packaging. So they start a campaign to help people change how they shop.
Another class decides to help save water. Here’s how they started.
Miguel Salazar lives in Meridien, Texas. Every day he walks home from school and passes Carrollon Creek (小溪). The creek filled with rubbish. But the creek was not always this way. Miguel’s grandfather remembers flowers and plants grew along it. Many people fished there. So Miguel’s class decides to clean up the creek. They make a plan.
If one person can make a difference, think how much more can get done if people work together to care for Planet Earth.

Most children don’t want their parents to go to their schools and they don’t like parent-teacher meetings. They are afraid of their parents. But sometimes they do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this happens, a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the child. When a parent spanks a child, he will use his hand or something hard to strike the child on the bottom. The parents want to show their children that they have done something wrong.
One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing.
Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.
Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Taking a more child-friendly way can help as well. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried.

When my family moved to America from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs(风俗) and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect (尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and said “sorry” to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem because “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words. (By Gina)

Every August on the island of Heimaey, young people often take a walk along the streets throughout the night. Why do their parents allow them to stay out The children of Heimaey are going to save young puffins(海鸥), small black-and-white seabirds.
The cliffs(悬崖)above the town are home to a large group of puffins. The birds dig holes(洞穴,窝)all around the cliffs. You may never heard of Ladislao Biro, but you have certainly heard of the pen he invented—the ballpoint pen, or biro. Before Biro invented his pen, people wrote with fountain pens(钢笔). The ink sometimes went out. In the 1930s, Biro was a magazine editor in Budapest in Hungary. He noticed that the inks which the magazine’s printers used dried very quickly. Biro wondered if quick-drying inks could be used in pens. He came up with the idea of a tube of ink with a free-moving ball on the end. As a person wrote, the ball collected ink from the tube(管子) and rolled(滚动)it on to the paper. The pen would be cheap and could be thrown away when the ink was used up.
Biro began to work on his invention but he soon left Europe for Buenos Aires in Argentina, a country in South America, because of the Second World War. Biro and his brother George, who was a chemist, began to improve(改进)the pen. In the early 1940s, Biro began to produce(生产)his new pen, the biro. In 1944, he sold his invention to another company, which began to produce the pen for Britain and America.
