Have you ever stayed in a hotel Most of Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable(一次性)toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers. Many guests like the idea because they don’t have to bring their own. But, next time, when you’re going traveling, don’t forget to bring your own things. Some hotels in big cities won’t provide guests with disposable things unless the guests ask for them. They want to ask people to use fewer disposable things.
Many disposable things are made of plastic. People throw them away after only using them once. It is a waste of natural resources(资源)and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of that waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19,000 tons of plastic bags and 1,320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! So the less plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, brings your own things and use them again.
Back at home and school, you can also do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones. After using a plastic bag, wash it out and let it dry. Then you can use it over and over. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
57. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and slippers can often be seen in most Chinese hotels.
58. Many guests don’t like to bring their own, because the things in hotels are very clean.
59. Nowadays some hotels in big cities don’t provide disposable things even if guests ask for them.
60. According to the passage, one Chinese people makes as much as 400kg of waste from disposable things.
61. The writer of the passage suggested we should make our environment cleaner.
62. The passage tells us students not to use plastic or paper things although they are healthy.

One cool April 22 morning, people started the day as usual. Yet I was not a normal day.
What’s so special about April 22 The answer is simple. It is Earth Day. People all over the
world celebrate this important day. The idea of having a special day to celebrate Earth began in the 1960s. Life was very different then. Few people talked or even though about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were.
On April 22, 1970, twenty million Americans took part in the first Earth Day activities. They showed that people really wanted to do something about the environment. Since then laws have been passed to protect the air, water, land and animals.
The vehicles such as cars and buses you ride in must pass tests to make sure they don’t cause too much pollution. Thanks to this law, cars today release about half as many bad chemicals as cars did back in 1970. As a result, the air we breathe is cleaner than it once was.
Rivers and lakes are also cleaner today than they were in the 1970s. It’s a good thing because they needed a lot of help. The Cuyahoga River in Ohio was so polluted that rubbish and oil on the river even caught fire! Today, the river is cleaner. It no longer burns. It’s healthy enough for birds, fish and other animals.
Now the celebration has spread to other countries. More than 175 countries take part each year.
In 2007, people in China paid much attention to a big problem. People were throwing away 27 million plastic bags a day! People had “Bye-Bye Throwaway Culture Week.” They wanted everyone to see how polluted it was to throw away so many plastic bags. In 2008, China passed new laws against them.
Every April 22, millions of people get together to clean and protect Earth. They also celebrate how far we have come. Our job is to put this knowledge to work. You can help keep our planet healthy too!

Where in the world can you take an hour’s train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West, and a burning building that never burns down There’s only one place, and that’s Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets(布景)in the Universal Studios(万能电影摄影棚), one of the oldest and largest movie companies in the USA.
A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn’t quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeated old ones.
The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay home to watch series, like Dynasty have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movie. These “soap opera”, as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them.
Though it is soap operas that are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in Bussiness, big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new center, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized hat they don’t need Hollywood any more. Modern cameras and real houses are used instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.
But Hollywood is fighting back. The state of California is trying hard to keep its best-known industry.
