Jack Brown’s troubles began as soon as he walked into
the Blue Sky Hotel with his friend, Sam. Together they
went to the reception desk. Jack said, “Good evening.
My name’s Jack Brown. I booked a room here. Can I
have my key, please?”
The clerk said, “You are welcome to stay, sir, but we
don’t allow pets in this hotel.”
“Pets!” Jack said loudly, “Sam isn’t a pet. I’m blind and
he’s my eyes. He takes me everywhere. Don’t you, Sam?”
Sam barked. It sounded like “Yes.”
“I’m sorry, sir,” the clerk said again, “but the hotel rules say…”
Jack said, “Please call the manager.”
The manager came. He agreed at once that both of Jack and Sam could be guests. He himself took them to their room. Before going into the room, Jack said, “Can you tell me where the fire exit is?”
“It’s the fifth door along from yours,” said the manager.
“Thank you,” said Jack. “Safety first, you know.”
The manager described Jack’s room to him, and left.
Jack told us in his own words what happened next.
“I was tired and went to sleep. Sam woke me up. He was pulling at my quilt and barking. I smelt smoke! A fire! But where? Just then, the fire alarm rang. I went to the door of my room. I felt it. The door was hot so I didn’t open it. The fire must be outside. I wet some towels and put them along the bottom of the door.”
“I tried the phone. It was dead. I coughed. A little smoke was getting past the towels. So I lay on the floor with Sam next to me and waited. The minutes was like hours. Then I heard it --- the sound of a fire engine. It sounded like music to my ears.”
“I opened the window, waved and shouted. Sam barked. Moments later, I heard a voice. The fireman at the window didn’t want to take Sam. ‘We can’t break the rules,’ he said. I explained about Sam. Seconds later, we were both safe on the ground.”
“So you saved Sam’s life!” I said.
“Yes, and he saved mine,” said Jack. “Didn’t you, Sam?”
Sam barked. It sounded like “Yes.”

郑佩 Blind man and eyes in a fire教学反思
引导学生对一些优美语句的欣赏,如 “The minutes was like hours.” “It sounded like music to my ears”。
