In today’s world, English is the most wildly used language. It is our duty to learn English in the new situation of the reform and opening (改革开放) to the outside world. How can we master the English language ? I’d like to give you some good advice.
First, get interested in it. I enjoy listening to foreign friends talking when I was a child. At the same time I watched the English programme Follow Me on TV. From then on, I kept on learning English. The more I learned, the more progress I made.
Second, practice makes perfect. Many people study English very hard, but they are very shy to speak it in public, for they are afraid of making mistakes. Remember you have to make a mistake before you can correct it. A native English speaker makes mistakes sometimes, too.
Third, the beginners should be encouraged to pay attention to idioms. The English language has many idioms. For example, you should say “ He is as strong as a cow.”
69. The writer wants to tell us ____________.
A. the importance of learning English
B. the new situation of the reform and opening to the outside world

All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy, happy and help them to live longer.
Sports change with the season. People play different games in winter and summer.
Games and sports often grow out of people’s work and everyday activities. The Arab use horses or camels in much of their daily life; they use them in their sports, too.
Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers.
Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese boxing, for example , has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is a hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time.

Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.
Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.
By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”

A week ago,“Sports for Life”programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents asking for more information about it.Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you answer the phones.

There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each game.
Sports 2: Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. First, it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade. Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping , jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧运动), all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany each group of 15 hikers . Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Sports 4: Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The pool will have two lifeguards present. Three types of pangolins (穿山甲) exist in Africa — the giant pangolin, the tree pangolin and the most widespread, the ground pangolin. Pangolins have small heads and long, broad tails. They are toothless and have no external ears, although their hearing is good. Their sense of smell is well-developed, but their sight is poor. The weight of the scales (鳞片) and skin make up about 20% of their weight.
The common pangolin prefers sandy soils and is found in woodlands and savannas (热带草原), within reach of water.
All pangolins can roll themselves into a ball to defend themselves. The cutting action of their scales protects them too. Pangolins also have scent glands (臭腺) that release strong, foul smelling secretions. Pangolins are normally alone. Females are usually alone with their young. The young are 6 inches long and weigh 12 ounces at birth. Their pale, soft scales begin to harden by the second day. The baby is folded in the mother’s lap or rolled-up body. It is nursed for 3 to 4 months and begins to eat termites (白蚁) at 1 month. At this time the infant begins to accompany the mother, perhaps riding on the base of her tail. If the mother senses danger the baby slips under her and is protected when she rolls up her body.
Pangolins use their sense of smell to locate termite and ant nests. They dig up the insects with their claws and use their extremely long tongues to eat them.
73. Where do common pangolins like to live?
A. On a tree. B. In a pond. C. On a hill. D. In woodlands.
74. When pangolins are ______, they release strong, foul smelling secretions.
A. happy B. sad C. frightened D. angry

A. Heavy. B. Beautiful. C. Protective. D. Hard.
76. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The pangolin’s environment. B. The pangolin’s diet.
C. The pangolin’s behavior. D. The pangolin’s appearance.

Have you ever been afraid? Do thunder and lightning make your heart beat faster? Maybe your mouth goes dry when your teacher says you will be given a test, or your palms(手掌) sweat when it’s your turn to give your report in front of the class. Perhaps you get butterflies in your stomach when you see the bully (欺负人的人) who chooses you.
We all have fears sometimes. That’s true no matter how big we are or how brave we can be. Fear of getting too close to a campfire may save you from a bad burn. And fear of getting a bad grade on a test may make you study hard. Being nervous can also sharpen your senses and help you perform better during a track meet. Some people even enjoy being a little scared (恐惧的). That’s why they like to watch scary movies.
Usually, our bodies go into fight only when there is something to fear. However, sometimes this happens when there doesn’t seem to be anything to be frightened about. When you feel scared but there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason, that’s called anxiety (焦虑). For some kids, the feeling of anxiety or worry can happen at any time. For others, it might appear only at certain times, like when they are leaving their home or family to go somewhere. For some people, this feeling of anxiety happens almost all the time and gets in the way of what they want to do.
Tell your parents if your anxiety becomes strong and is getting in the way of what you want to do. Your parents can take you to a doctor, who can help to find out if a medical problem is making you feel anxious. But you can also try these ways to kill the feeling yourself.
77. What does the underlined phrase “get butterflies in your stomach” (Paragraph 1) probably mean?
A. Get angry. B. Get nervous. C. Get hurt. D. Get excited.
78. What does the writer want to show in the second paragraph?
A. Brave people won’t feel fear whatever happens.
B. Children are easier to show fear than adults.
C. Fear is a sign of being sick and unhealthy.
D. Fear can be good to people sometimes.
79. According to the passage, we can learn that anxiety _________.
A. often appears before an important exam
B. appears when people face some frightening things
C. can’t be treated once it begins
D. sometimes doesn’t seem to have a clear reason
80. What would be talked about in the next paragraph?
A. The great harm fear does to people’s health.
B. Who to turn to for help when people feel anxious.
C. Some good ways to help people deal with fear.
D. What kind of people can easily feel anxious.

Reading is very important to help you learn English. To learn as much as you can from reading, you need to read different kinds of English. This book provides not only different kinds of English but also a good way to check your reading ability.
There are four parts in the book:

Part 2 is People: In this part all the tests are about people. For example, there is an informal letter between friends. There is formal ( 正式的) English in biography ( 传记). There is a job application as a model to help with your writing, as well as testing your reading.
Part 3 is Places: In this part, too many different kinds of English are shown, some informal and some formal. There is the informal English of a holiday postcard. There is also the formal English in a letter of complaint.
Part 4 is Things: You will find some descriptive writing in this part. There are descriptions(描述) of clothes and of a computer.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up(分开) with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim, as a friend, really feel good about it?” “And was Paul friendly just because I had a car?” When we look back, these thoughts can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it is too late.
Why do we go wrong with our friends, or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meanings. And if we do not really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. When someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog!” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You’re a lucky guy!” That is being friendly. But “a lucky dog”? There is a bit of envy (嫉妒) in those words. What he may be saying is that he does not think you deserve (应得) your luck.
“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another phrase(短语) that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem. But this phrase contains the thought that your problem is not at all important.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Is what he says shown by the tone of voice? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save your another mistake.

If you want to get the most out of the study of a language, you must also read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, and so on. And in reading books of this kind the important thing is to get on with the reading; to try to grasp(理解) what the writer is going to tell you in the book as a whole. This is impossible if you stop and think over the meaning of every single word which happens to be unfamiliar(不熟悉). You can not enjoy a story if you stop half a dozen times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary. You may even prevent yourself from understanding the story as a whole by doing this.
When you are reading books of this kind, therefore, you will usually have to rely mainly on(依靠) the context (上下文) to help you. If you meet an unfamiliar word, do not let it take too much of your attention from the main thread(主线) of the story. In all probability you will meet the same word again a few pages later on in a slightly different context, and each time you see it that your understanding of it will become more exact.

After a day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping enables your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your muscles relax little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to another.
If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend——breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.

Our eating habits are very important for good health and a strong body. There are times when most of us would have sweets and ice-cream rather than eat meat and rice. Sweets and ice-cream are not bad for the stomach if we eat at the end of a meal. If we drink beer at meals, it may take away our appetite(胃口). It is important for us to eat our meal at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it is a sign that our body needs food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow the bread, it was a sign that he was not telling the truth. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed an excellent way of finding out the truth. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in swallowing anything dry. Because he is worried, he loses his appetite and does not want to eat.

When I was walking down the street the other day, I happened to notice a small brown leather wallet, lying on the sidewalk. I picked it up and opened it to see if I could find out the owner’s name. There was nothing inside it except some change and an old photograph—— a picture of a woman and a young girl about twelve years old, who looked like the woman’ s daughter. I put the photograph back and took the wallet to the police station, where I handed it to the desk sergeant. Before I left, the sergeant took down my name and address in case the owner might want to write and thank me.

Then I explained that I had recognized her from the photograph I had found in the wallet. My uncle insisted on going to the police station immediately to claim the wallet. On Keeping a Diary in English
Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to improve our English writing ability. Compared with other forms of writing, it is 36 and takes less time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. 37 we stick to this practice, gradually, we'll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we 38 run up against a lot of difficulties. In the first place, it happens that we have trouble in 39 appropriate words and phrases to give expression to 40 mind. Secondly, there are many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely 41 for us to put them into English properly. Most dog owners feel that their dogs are their best friends. Almost everyone likes dogs because they try hard to please their owners. One of my favorite stories is about a dog who wanted his owner to please him.
One of my friends has a large German shepherd ( 牧羊狗) named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much. One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed a long time, and he talked and talked.
Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn’t leave. Jack became very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down directly in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He continued talking. Finally, Jack couldn’t stand it any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again in front of the visitor, but this time he held the man’s hat in his mouth.
German shepherds aren’t the only intelligent dogs. Another intelligent dog is a Seeing Eye dog. This is a special dog which helps blind people walk along the streets and do many other things. When the lazy days of summer arrive and the schedule is packed with swimming, camp, and family vacations,it can be a challenge to find time for learning. But kids’ reading skills don’t have to grow cold once school’s out. Here are some ways to make reading a natural part of their summer fun.
Explore your library. Visit your local library to check out books and magazines that your kids haven’t seen before. Many libraries have summer reading programs, book clubs, and reading contests for even the youngest borrowers. With a new library card,a child will feel extra grown-up checking out books.
Read on the road. Going on a long car trip?Make sure the back seat is stocked with favorite reads. When you’re not at the wheel, read the books aloud. Get some audiobooks (many libraries have large selections)and listen to them together during driving time.
Make your own books. Pick one of your family’s favorite parts of summer—whether it’s baseball, ice cream,or the pool—and have your child draw pictures of it or cut out pictures from magazines. Stick the pictures onto paper to make a booklet and write text for it. When you’re done, read the book together. Reread it whenever you like!
Keep in touch. Kids don’t have to go away to write about summer vacation. Even if your family stays home, they can send postcards to tell friends and relatives about their adventures. Ask a relative to be your child’s pen pal and encourage them to write each week.
Keep up the reading habits. Even if everything else changes during the summer, keep up the reading routines around your house. Read with your kids every day—whether it’s just before bedtime or under a shady tree on a lazy afternoon. And don’t forget to take a book to the beach!Just brush the sand off the pages—it’s no sweat!

Many people think that the bike will soon become people’s favorite once again. As to this, I can’t agree more. There are several reasons accounting for my opinion.
Firstly, they are affordable for most people and convenient to park. Secondly, being eco-friendly, they bring no environmental problem.Thirdly, unlike cars, they almost cause no traffic problems. Last but not least, they benefit people’s health greatly by giving them due physical exercise.
From what has been mentioned above, we have good reason to believe that the bike will soon become people’s favorite once more.

When a friend is sad about a tragedy(悲剧),it’s hard to know how to comfort(安慰) him/ her. But the worst thing you can do is say nothing. It could mean that you don’t care. You don’t have to say much.. A single supportive phrase doesn’t require absolutely perfect words to break the ice. Here are some conversation starters when life difficult situations have your tongue tied.
1. A friend loses his baby.
Don’t say: “Don’t worry. You’re so young. You’ll have another baby.” Do say: “ I’m so sorry. I can’t begin to imagine what you are going through, but if you want to talk about it, call me anytime.”
2. A guy deserts your friend.
Don’t say: “I never liked that rat bastard (坏蛋) anyway!” ( If the couple winds up reconciling (和解), you could end up losing your friend.) Do say: “Breaking up is always hard to deal with, but I’m here for you, whatever you need.”
3. A friend has a death in the family.
Don’t say: “It’s God’s will.” or “I know exactly how you feel.” Do say: “I’m sorry about your loss. What can I do to help?”
4. A friend loses a job suddenly.
Don’t say: “ Work is always boring. Those employers didn’t suit you!” Do say: “ I’m sorry for that, but I know there’s an even better job waiting for you there. Let’s think about possibilities.”
5. Someone’s pet dies.
Don’t say: “Gee! It was only a cat!” or “ My roommate doesn’t like her dog and she is getting rid of her dog. Do you want it?” Do say: “I’m sorry, she was such a great cat. How long did you have it?”

There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses.
Or, job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.
Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Web site to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.
Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called “What Color is Your Parachute (降落伞)?” by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career (职业) since it was first published in nineteen seventy.
Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.

Taking Part in School Activities
We had a heated discussion about whether senior high school students should take active part in school activities. As for school activities, students mainly hold two views.
Many students are very enthusiastic about school activities because they think that learning from textbooks is not their only task and they should take any chance to get some practical knowledge. Besides, after long hours’ study, they can relax themselves by participating in school activities.
However, a large group of students take little interest in them and spend most of their time on study. They believe that they should make full use of time to study and that school activities have little to do with their further development. Thus sometimes they even laugh at those who take an active part in school activities.
As far as I am concerned, I prefer the first view. On the one hand, we can learn a great deal from other students we meet in activities.Furthermore, modern society requires many qualities of young students, so “book worms” can’t keep up with the times.

People believes that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆). Here, people are learning on climbing. The climbing wall goes straight up and small holding places for hands and feet.
How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness (保护带) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.
Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.

As societies develop, their members start to see things not so much according to what they need, but according to what they want. When people have enough money, these wants become demands.
Now, it' s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective marketing strategies (策略). There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets, for example, is to interview customers while they’re doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It’s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.
Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money, it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age-groups to attract.
Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touting the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.
64. The text is designed for _______.
A. researchers B. salesmen C. mangers D. customers
65. Which of the following can help managers get useful information?
A. Visiting customers themselves.
B. Giving customers free food on the street.

D. Visiting parks as ordinary customers.
66. What does the word "this" underlined in the last sentence refer to?
A. Visiting Disneyland.
B. Dressing up and walking around.
C. Acting Mickey Mouse.
D. Wearing attractive clothes.

A. how to do market research
B. how to develop marketing strategies
C. how to find out customers' social needs
D. how to encourage customers to spend more money

I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a "complicated (复杂的) idea" until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without realizing either its irony (嘲讽) or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times. (How, after all, could one read a book more than once?) And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length. (Could anything shorter be a book?)
There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the "hundred most important books of Western Civilization." "More than anything else in my life," the professor told the reporter with finality, " these books have made me all that I am." That was the kind of words I couldn’t ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition (迷信) of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.
68. On hearing the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought ________.
A. a student should not have a complicated idea
B. one must read as many books as possible
C. it was impossible for one to read two thousand books
D. students ought to make a list of the books they had read

C. had plans for reading D. read only one book several times

A. firmly B. clearly C. proudly D. pleasantly
71. The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to________.
A. explain why it was included in the list
B. describe why he seriously crossed it off the list
C. prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word
D. show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand
72. The writer provides two book lists to ________.
A. show how he developed his point of view
B. tell his reading experience at high school
C. introduce the two persons' reading methods
D. explain that he read many books at high school

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen!
Welcome to Wenchuan. I’m Kitty, a tour guide from Jinhui Travel Agency.Today we are setting off on a trip to Wenchuan Earthquake Museum.
Do you remember 2008, when a terrible earthquake attacked this city? Tens of thousands of people were killed or injured. A large number of villages and towns lay in ruins.
The army came to the survivors’ rescue right away. The earthquake witnessed many moving stories. A teacher, who loved her students as if they were her own children, lost her own life saving her students.
In the past four years, people have contributed money to the earthquake-stricken areas. Children are being well cared for. Many college graduates volunteer to teach here.
As you can see now, Wenchuan has greatly changed over time. New houses, schools, and so on have been set up. It has taken on a new look.
Finally, I do hope I’ll make friends with you.
Wish you a happy time here.

第三部分:阅读(共两节,满分40分)

It’s easy to observe an athlete like Tiger Woods and feel like he’s from another planet. He has won 14 major tournament(锦标赛) titles and about $122 million in prize money and ads. He also has a happy family. It seems that he is too perfect to be one of us. But Woods has more in common with you than you might think.
Woods’ parents — particularly his father — set high expectations for him when he was a child. Before Earl Woods’ death in 2006, he told Golf magazine, “My purpose in raising Tiger was not to raise a golfer. I wanted to raise a good person.”
By age two, Woods was already swinging(挥舞) a golf club. But once he entered school, Woods’ father was careful to send the message that school work came first. Woods wasn’t allowed to practice until his homework was done.
When Woods finally reached the professional tour, his father continued to expect a lot of him. “Tiger will do more than any other man in history to change the course of human. The world is just getting a taste of his power,” he said in 1996. Clearly, Earl Woods had great expectations of his son.
In this way, Tiger Woods is actually like a lot of us. Many of us feel a similar pressure to make our parents proud. When this happens, it’s easy to let that pressure overwhelm(压倒) us.
In a perfect world, we would all grow up to be Tiger Woods-like successes in our own fields. But that isn’t possible. There are many things that we can’t control in this life, despite our best efforts.
There is, however, one thing that we can do: we can try to be a “good person”, as Earl Woods asked his son to do.
46. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the first paragraph?

The zebra belongs to the horse family. One of nature’s great mysteries is why the zebra has stripes . One theory is that the stripes help the zebra cool down. On hot days the black stripes get a lot hotter than the white area of the zebra and under the black stripes there are special layers of fat for protection. Hot air then rises off the black stripes, forcing colder air down around the white areas, cooling the zebra down. This, however, is just a kind of theory. The stripes can also confuse predators(食肉动物,掠夺者)when zebras stay with other animals in great numbers.
Zebras have excellent hearing and eyesight and can run at speeds of up to 56 kilometers per hour. They also have a powerful kick that can cause serious injury to a predator, like a lion, or an African wild dog. Usually the lead male of the herd stays at the back of the group to defend against predators if necessary, while the females and youngsters escape danger.
Zebras are herbivores that feed only on plants and live mostly by eating grasses, although they also might eat a bit on the leaves and stems(茎) of bushes. They eat grasses for many hours each day, using their strong teeth. Spending so much time chewing wears the zebras’ teeth down, so their teeth keep growing all their lives. As the dry season arrives and the grasses die back, zebra herds travel to find more food and water holes for drinking. Most zebras have no specific territories. They travel from place to place, never staying in one area very long.
51.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that __________.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible(有责任感的) citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓地).On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
