A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the correct time and is never late for anything.
An unpunctual man never does what he has to do at the right time. He is always in a hurry and in the end of losing both time and his good name .A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be got back. Time is more useful than material things. In fact, time is life itself. An unpunctual man is always wasting his most important things as well as others'. An unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters or return calls. But the man who really has much to do is very careful of his time. He knows that he can not finish all his work unless he carefully does every piece of work.
Being unpunctual is the sign of disrespect (不尊重) towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the time when he should be there, he keeps all other guests (客人) waiting for him. Usually this will be thought as a great disrespect to the host and all the other guests.
Not like a punctual person, an unpunctual one can't do his duty wonderfully, whether it is public or personal. Imagine how it would be if those who should do important tasks failed to be on time. A man who is known to be often unpunctual is never believed by his friends or fellow men.
( )1.The Chinese meaning of the word “punctual” in this passage is probably “_______”.
( )2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.An unpunctual person often has more time.
B.An unpunctual person has more work to do.
C.A punctual person often has a busy life.
D.A punctual person often does his work wonderfully.
( )3.When you are invited to dinner, you'd better arrive there________.
A.in a hurry B.after the host
C.at the decided time D.before other guests
( )4.From the passage, we learn that an unpunctual man usually ________ in the bed.
A.saves time for others
B.leaves his family and friends
C.gets his chances and knowledge
D.loses his time and good name
( )5.According to the author, which one is more useful?
A.Good name. B.Time.
C.Material things. D.Respect.

Different countries have different customs. Let's have a look at the table manners. In China, people use chopsticks to eat and they are supposed to eat without making a noise. But in Japan, it's polite to make a noise when you are eating noodles or drinking tea, because that means the food is delicious and you thank the meal maker. In western countries, people use knife and fork at table. But American table manners are simpler than those in Europe. Western people may use more than one set of knife and fork at dinner.

Dos
Don’ts
You’re expected to put your bread on the table.
…
You are not supposed to put your bread on your plate.
…
Don’ts:
You are not supposed to eat anything with your hands except bread.
You’re not supposed to say you are full.
You are not supposed to put your elbows on the table.
Dos:
You’re expected to cut up your fruit and eat it with a fork.
You’re expected to say “That was delicious” if you don’t want any more food.
Step 8. Language points
1. Mind your manners!
1) mind…
e.g. Mind your head, please.
e.g. It’s bad manners to talk with your mouth full.
2. They go out of their way to make me feel at home.
go out of one’s way 特地;格外努力
e.g. John went out of his way to make his girl friend happy.
make sb. feel at home
e.g. I’m doing everything I can to make them feel at home.
3. You wouldn’t believe how quickly my French has improved because of that.
You wouldn’t believe … 与此类似的表达还有You would never believe…或You would hardly believe…。例如:
You wouldn’t believe that he found his long-lost sister in Taiwan!
You would never believe what quick progress he’s made ever since he attended your class.
4. My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table.
learning how to behave at the table是现在分词短语,在此用作句子的表语。再如:
His main hobby is fishing.
The most important thing is getting there in time.
behave
e.g. The boy behaved very well last night.
★ behave as if / as though意为“表现得好像……”。如:
Bruce was a little boy, but he behaved as if / as though he was an adult.
★ behave + adv. + towards / to sb.
I think he behaved badly towards / to you that day.
I hope Nicholas behaved himself at the party.
They never greeted each other and ________ _______________ they were strangers.
Unless you ______ _______, you won’t get any present.
Answers: behaved as if / as though
behave yourself
5. … but I’m gradually getting used to it. get used to 习惯于
e.g. We get used to this way of speaking,.
① be/get used to sth./doing sth.
e.g. He got used to living in the country.
② used to do sth.
e.g. He used to plant roses.
6. Another example is that you’re not supposed to eat anything with your hand except bread, not even fruit.
1) Everyone is here except him.
2) We have classes except Saturday and Sunday.
3) I can take a holiday at any time except in September.
4) He never came to visit except to borrow something.
5) He will do anything except lent you money.????????????????????????????????????????????????????
____________________________________________
Answers: 1. She can do everything except cook.
2. I have no other wish except to pass the examination.
