Dar and I loved to dance. It was probably the first thing we did together, long before we would share our lives.
We grew up in a small Oregon mountain community where dances were held almost every Saturday night. Dar was seventeen, and l was thirteen, when we first danced. He was one of the best dancers on the floor, and so was I. We always jitterbugged. No slow dancing for us;nothing remotely romantic.
Our fathers would stand along the wall and watch. Every once in a while, Dar's dad would smile a little and say, to no one in particular, but my dad could hear, "Boy, my kid can sure dance." My dad never blinked an eye; he acted like he'd never heard. But a while later he would say, to no one in particular, "That girl of mine can sure dance."
Our dancing together stopped for five years while Dar was in the South Pacific in World War II. When we met again, Dar was twenty-two, and l was eighteen. We began to date and dance again. We were as good together as we remembered, and this time we added slow dancing.
For us, life is a dance, a movement of rhythms, directions, stumbles, missteps, at times slow and precise, or fast and wild and joyous. We did all the steps.
Two nights before Dar died, the family were with us. We all ate dinner together, and Dar sat with us. He hadn't been able to eat for several days. After dinner, I put on a Nat King Cole tape. Dar took me in his arms, weak as he was, and we danced and smiled. No tears for us.
We were doing what we had loved to do for more than fifty years. It was our last dance-forever unforgettable.I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

23.How did the author feel when she danced with Dar for the last time?

Have you ever heard that we humans use only ten percent of our brains? This opinion holds a certain appeal because if it were true, then we could instantly become ten times more intelligent just by firing up that sleepy majority of the brain!
The idea that we use only a small part of the brain dates back to animal experiments in the 19th century. When scientists stimulated (刺激) a specific part. of the brain, the animal moved its leg or tail. If a tiny part of the brain could do something so great, what was the use of the rest of the brain? Some scientists assumed that large parts of the brain were simply useless.
Then, in the early 20th century, scientists observed that stimulating certain parts of the brain had no physical effects. They named these seemingly useless parts of the brain the "silent cortex." Today we know that in humans, much of the "silent cortex" is actually devoted to complex activities like language, learning, and imagining.
Brain scans have shown that different parts of the brain become much more active as we shift (切换) our attention and focus, but even as we sleep, many areas of the brain are extremely active. Would you be smarter if your entire brain constantly worked to maximum capacity (能力)?Interestingly enough, the opposite is probably true. The less brain activity you need to perform a given task, the more the brain as a whole is able to do.
28.Why does the opinion mentioned in paragraph l seem appealing?
A. People wish to become much smarter.
B. People believe it. is scientific.
C. People know nothing about the brain.
D. People want to make little use of their brain,
29.What did scientists discover in their experiment in the 20th century?
A. The majority of the brain is sleeping.
B. Animals' legs and tails have some connection with their brain.
C. Stimulation on some parts of the brain causes no physical reaction.
D. Certain parts of the brain are devoted to language and learning activities,
30."Silent cortex" has proved to be _.
A. sensitive to stimulation
B. useful in complex activities
C. responsible for physical reaction
D. more active than the other parts of the brain
31.If you need less brain activity to perform a task,
A. you will feel sleepy
B. you must shift your focus
C. you can use your brain to the fullest
D. you will be more productive

A new pollen (花粉) study showed that drought was responsible for the extinction of civilizations more than 3,000 years ago during the Bronze Age.
The reason behind why the civilizations in and around modern-day Israel suddenly broke down more than 3,000 years ago has remained a mystery up until now. A new pollen study by Tel Aviv University researchers finally solved this Bronze Age mystery.
Prof. Israel Finkelstein showed that owing to serious climate changes, the entire world of the Bronze Age crumbled in a short period of time. The discovery was made on the basis of a high-resolution analysis of pollen grains taken from sediments (沉淀物) beneath the Sea of Galilee and the western shore of the Dead Sea.
Prof. Finkelstein received support from the European Research Council to conduct research aimed at reconstructing ancient Israel. Researchers of the part of the project that dealt with climate change extracted (提取) about 60 feet of samples of gray muddy sediment from the center of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel. They had to drill through 1,000 feet of water and into 65 feet of the lake bed and were able to recover evidence dating over the past 9,000 years.
“Pollen is the most enduring organic material in nature,” explained Dr. Dafna Langgut, a pollen researcher who carried out the actual work of sampling. “These grains tell us about the plants that grew near the lake in the past and therefore prove the climatic conditions in the region.”
Researchers noted a sharp decrease in Mediterranean trees like oaks and pines in the Late Bronze Age. According to study experts, this could be because of repeated periods of drought. The droughts may have resulted in long famines, forcing people to migrate from north to south.
32. The underlined word “crumbled” in Paragraph 3 means _____.
A. settled????????????????????? B. changed??????????? C. established???????? D. disappeared
33. Prof. Finkelstein conducted the new pollen study to _____.
A. earn some money B. recreate ancient Israel
C. learn more about local plants D. discover the ancient civilizations
34. By conducting the study, scientists found _____.
A. Mediterranean trees were rare in the Early Bronze Age
B. climate change was to blame for the lost civilization
C. people in the Late Bronze Age starved to death
D. droughts were rare during the Bronze Age
35. The text is most probably taken from _____.
A. a travel magazine????????????? B. a history textbook
C. a newspaper report??? D. an agricultural book
第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的五个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。
It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. 36 They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways;that they are too serious and too strict with their children;and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
37 Parents tend to forget how they themselves felt when young. For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. 38 Most of them plan things ahead,at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes,in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble;it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. 39 And if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. 40 It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
A. It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust.
B. Young people tend to do what they like.
C. They say that their parents don’t understand them.
D. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like.
E. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own.
F. While older people worry more easily.
G. Do trust your parents and follow their suggestions.

【答案】
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter, saying you are hoping to be a volunteer in 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Beijing has become the first city to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games, and it together with Zhangjiakou is the host of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. I’d like to give you two suggestions on how to learn Chinese well. First, speak a little Chinese every day. The absolute best way to learn any new language is just to speak it. Second, attend a Chinese class or discussion group. After all, language learning settings are of great importance.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to write to me.

Text 10
My parents rail a small restaurant. The restaurant was open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And my first job when I was six years old was shining shoes for customers. My duties increased as I grew older. At age ten I was cleaning tables and washing plates. My father made it clear that I had to meet certain standards.I had to be on time, hard-working and polite to
the customers. I was never paid for any work I did. One day I made a mistake of telling dad I thought he should give me 10 pounds a week. He said,“Ok,then how about you paying me for the three meals a day when you eat here and for the cost you bring in your friends for free drinks.”He figured I owed him about 40 pounds a week. This taught me quite a lot.
