This quotation from Jonathan Lockwood Huie tells us that real friends can give us strength and hope when we are in trouble and real friends can benefit from each other. We need such friends as can point out our mistakes directly and have the same life goals as us. Once I failed again and again in my math and lost interest in it, it was my best friend that encouraged me not to give up and offered help in time. With his kind and selfless help, I gradually caught up with others.
So I say we need friends but what we most need is a friend that can enrich our life.

Losing weight comes with a lot of health benefits — including making your brain sharper.
Yes, it turns out that overweight may damage cognitive functions such as memory and attention. There have been few studies of overweight and cognitive functioning, possibly because it is generally believed that it is not a primary risk cause for poor cognitive performance. Losing weight, therefore, may help improve these mental functions, according to a new research led by John Gunstad, assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University.
Growing evidence suggests that being fat is linked to cognitive deficits(缺陷). So Gunstad and his team guessed that losing weight might improve mental fun_ction. For their study, they measured memory and attention in a group of 150 overweight participants, some of whom had some kind of operation for weight loss and some did not. All of the volunteers completed mental skills tests to assess their abilities of memory and attention at the beginning of the study, and again 12 weeks later. To begin with, about 24% of the patients showed damaged learning and 23% showed signs of poor memory when tested. At the end of the study, those who had lost weight after operation improved their scores into the average or above average range for cognitive functions. Scores for the volunteers who didn’t lose weight dropped even further.
The study helped Gunstad to find out whether losing weight had any effect on mental fun_ction, Now that he’s seen the positive effect that weight loss can have on memory and attention, he says he will next study those who choose to lose weight by the traditional way — eating healthier and getting more active. He expects that losing weight in this way will have a similarly positive effect on the brain. “If we can improve the condition with operations, then we can probably produce the same change with behavioral weight loss as well,” he says.
1. There is less research on overweight and cognitive functions because researchers ________.
A. believe overweight only affects our body
B. have focused on ways to sharpen people’s mind

An 18-year-old girl Anna Meier from Austria is taking her parents to court for posting over 500 photos of her on Facebook since 2009, without her permission.
Anna has apparently become fed up with her parents’ refusal to take down the embarrassing photos of her at an early age, and is now seeking justice in court. She told the magazine that even though she was 11 years old when her parents started sharing her photos with several hundreds of Facebook friends, they went as far as to post pictures of her as a baby, without ever asking if it was alright with her. “They knew no shame and no limit — and didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my bed — every stage was photographed and then made public,”the girl said.
The girl added that she was only able to see the photos posted on Facebook by her parents when she was 14, after setting up her own account on it. Again and again, Anna asked her parents to remove the photos of her immediately, but they refused. Angry and upset, she felt that she had no other way but to take them to court, which she did as soon as she turned 18, this year. “I’m tired of not being taken seriously by my parents,”she said.
Anna’s lawyer claims they have a good chance of winning the case in court, if it can be proven that the images have violated her rights to a personal life. But, based on similar cases and according to Austrian privacy laws, if the parents lose, they may be forced to pay their daughter a fine of £3,000 to £10, 000.
But Anna’s parents, however, see nothing wrong with posting baby photos of her. “I consider it my right to publish these photos,”her father said.“We have posted no more photos of our daughter since she stopped allowing us to photograph her. We also have baby photos of her that can only be seen by a limited group of 700 Facebook friends.”
It’s reported that Anna has moved out of her parents’ home and is living with some girls in a rented apartment.
4. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Anna started to ask her parents to remove 500 photos at 11.
B. Around 700 of her parents’ Facebook friends shared the pictures.
C. Alma’s parents felt shameful for what they had done on Facebook.
D. Anna’s parents started to post her pictures on Facebook when she was 14.
5. What made Anna decide to take her parents to court?
A. The pictures of her sitting on the toilet.
B. Her parents’ attitude towards her request.
C. The hate for her parents since early childhood.
D. The comments of her parents’ Facebook friends.
6. If Anna’s parents lose in the case, they will have to pay a fine of at least ________.
A. £3,000 B. £4,000
C. £8,000 D. £10,000
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The girl will surely win the case in court.
B. The girl and her parents have made peace.
C. The girl has a tense relationship with her parents.
D. The author supports the girl accusing her parents.
6. 答案 A
Chimps(黑猩猩)will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct(本能)to help one another. Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves. Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food.
In the laboratory, chimps don’t naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no greater effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor in the next cage, he will pull at random — he just doesn’t care whether his neighbor gets food or not. Chimps are truly selfish.
Human children, on the other hand, are extremely cooperative. From the earliest ages, they desire to help others, to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see an unrelated adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help.
There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are remanded. A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests but were considerably better at understanding the social world.
The core of what children’s minds have and chimps’ don’t is what Tomasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.
8. What can we learn from the experiment with chimps?
A. Chimps seldom care about others’ interests.
B. Chimps tend to provide food for their children.
C. Chimps like to take in their neighbors’ food.
D. Chimps naturally share food with each other.
9. Michael Tomasello’s tests on young children indicate that they ________.
A. have the instinct to help others
B. know how to offer help to adults
C. know the world better than chimps
D. trust adults with their hands full
10. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. the helping behaviors of young children
B. ways to train children’s shared intentionality
C. cooperation as a distinctive human nature
D. the development of intelligence in children
8. 答案 A
由第二段最后一句... he just doesn’t care whether his neighbor gets food or not. Chimps are truly selfish.
9. 答案 A
He finds that if babies aged 18 months see an unrelated adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help.
由一、二句Chimps(黑猩猩)will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct(本能)to help one another.

Last week I talked with some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.
Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.
“Surgery(外科手术)”, one replied.
I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job.
One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it re-grows, you can get at least 5 cm taller!”
At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony(痛苦)just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!
It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.
No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.
1. We can know from the passage that the author works as ________.
A. a doctor B. a model
C. a teacher D. a reporter
2. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to ________.
A. marry a better man/woman
B. become a model
C. get an advantage over others in job-hunting
D. attract more admirers
3. According to the passage, the author believes that ________.
A. everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the cost
B. it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
C. it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career
D. media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery
4. The best title for the passage should be “ ________”.
A. Young Graduates Have Higher Expectation
B. Young Graduates Look to Surgery for Better Jobs
C. Young Graduates’ Opinion About Cosmetic Surgery
D. Young Graduates Face a Different Situation in Job-hunt
Last week I talked with some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.
I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job.
No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm.
Write a Good Interesting Blog
If you want to avoid being frustrated for writing a blog that was never read, here are some ways to make a good interesting blog.

3. 答案 but
根据空格后all the spaces were full可知,此处指Louis进入停车场后,却发现停车位都满了。

He drove in, parked, and ...
8. 答案 to get
9. 答案 him
10. 答案 away

It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Pity, no!”
I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

National Walking Month is organized every May by Living Streets, an organization that campaigns for the rights and the needs of pedestrians — indeed, the organization was previously known as the Pedestrians’ Association. The association’s aim is to make streets safe, attractive and enjoyable spaces for people to live, work, shop and play. Walk to School Week, 19 to 24 May, is part of the month’s activities and its aim is to encourage parents to send children to school on foot, rather than take them in the car or let them use public transport. (2016·四川)A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off — if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.
8. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk ________.
A. started sleep more easily
B. were more anxious
C. were less active
D. woke up later
9. Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?
A. It’s been tested on mice for ten times.
B. It can make people more energetic.
C. It exists in milk in great amount.
D. It’s used in sleeping drugs.
10. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Night Milk and Sleep
B. Fat Sugar and Health
C. An Experiment on Mice
D. Milk Drinking and Health
11. How does the author support the theme of the text?
A. By giving examples.
B. By stating arguments.
C. By explaining statistical data.
D. By providing research results.
