(2017·天水模拟)He met her at a party. She was outstanding; many guys were after her, but nobody paid any attention to him. After the party, he invited her for coffee. She was surprised, so as not to appear rude, she went along.
As they sat in a nice coffee shop, he was too nervous to say anything and she felt uncomfortable. Suddenly, he asked the waiter, “Could you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
They stared at him. He turned red, but when the salt came, he put it in his coffee and drank. Curious, she asked, “Why salt with coffee?” He explained, “When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked playing on the sea. I could feel it salty, like salty coffee. Now every time I drink it, I think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss it and my parents, who are still there.”
She was deeply moved. A man who can admit that he’s homesick must love his home and care about his family. He must be responsible. She talked too, about her faraway hometown, her childhood, her family. That was the start to their love story.
They continued to date. She found that he met all her requirements. He was tolerant, kind, warm and careful. And to think she would have missed the catch if not for the salty coffee! So they married and lived happily together. And every time she made coffee for him, she put in some salt, the way he liked it.
After 40 years, he passed away and left her a letter which said:
My dearest, please forgive my life-long lie. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that I asked for salt instead of sugar. It was hard for me to ask for a change, so I just went ahead. I never thought that we would hit it off. Many times, I tried to tell you the truth, but I was afraid that it would ruin everything. Sweetheart, I don’t exactly like salty coffee. But as it mattered so much to you, I’ve learnt to enjoy it. Having you with me was my greatest happiness. If I could live a second time, I hope we can be together again, even if it means that I have to drink salty coffee for the rest of my life.
1. She accepted his invitation for coffee because ________.
A. she fell in love with him
B. she didn’t want to be impolite
C. no one paid attention to him
D. no one else was interested in her
2. Why the man asked for some salt was because ________.
A. salty coffee made him miss his parents.
B. he want to catch the attention of the lady
C. he was so nervous that he made a mistake
D. he was telling a lie on purpose
3. What might be the woman’s feeling after she read the letter?
A. moved B. cheated
C. hurt D. angry
4. The best title for the passage might be ________.
A. A Life-long Lie B. Salty Coffee
C. A Mistake for Love D. A Homesick Man
答案 1-4 BCAB
(2017·温州模拟)We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request, “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
5. From Paragraph 2, we learn that ________.
A. parents feel secure about their privacy online
B. social networks successfully fill the generation gap
C. parents have realized the importance of social networks
D. social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate
6. Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because ________.
A. they hide something from their parents
B. they are unwilling to be watched by parents
C. their parents tend to fall behind in technology
D. their parents make negative comments on them
7. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. privacy online B. social networks
C. the generation gap D. parents’ friend requests
8. The passage is written mainly for ________.
A. parents B. teenagers
C. teachers D. researchers
However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives.
On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue?
(2016·课标全国Ⅱ)Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said:“Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time. His constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染)other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”
“Oh, sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”
“Nobody. I do it.”
“Really — at night, when you’re asleep?”
“Sure.”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”
9. The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to ________.
A. know more about the students
B. make the lessons more exciting
C. raise the students’ interest in art
D. teach the students about toy design
10. What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. He liked to help his teacher.
B. He preferred to study alone.
C. He was active in class.
D. He was imaginative.
11. What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Mistake. B. Drawback.
C. Difficulty. D. Burden.
12. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams?
A. To help them to see their creativity.
B. To find out about their sleeping habits.
C. To help them to improve their memory.
D. To find out about their ways of thinking.
9. 答案 A
I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students可知,利用万能工匠这种玩具来了解学生。故选A项。
12. 答案 A
Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay? 故选A项。

(2016·课标全国Ⅰ)You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams(1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson(1907-1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor(1930-present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator(参议员)and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U. S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks(1913-2005)
On December 1,1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” said Parks.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications etc., a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. __1__ Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them.
Taken individually, words have little meaning until they are strung together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. __2__ He laboriously reads one word at a time, often regressing(退回)to reread words or passages. Regression is a common bad habit in reading.
__3__ It moves a bar(or curtain)down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “stretch” him. The accelerator(加速器)forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading practically impossible. __4__ But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skill drastically improved after some training. Take Charlce, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good — 172 words a minute before the training, now it is an excellent 280 words a minute. __5__
A. A good reader obtains good reading skills.
B. Yet the fact is that most of us are poor readers.
C. To overcome the bad habit, some reading clinics use a device called an accelerator.
D. At first comprehension is sacrificed for speed.
E. Unfortunately, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words.
F. He is delighted that he can get through a lot more reading material in a short period of time.
G. To his joy, he soon has got a rise.

2. 答案 under
under the pressure意为“承受压力”。
5. 答案 to return
6. 答案 a
7. 答案 it
keep it in mind that ...
10. 答案 that/which
分析句子结构可知此空所引导的“take you close to your breaking point”为moments的定语从句,分析从句结构可知从句中缺少take的主语,that/which指代主句中的moments。
As far as I can remember, grow up in Ohio left many good memories. We lived near lake where I spent a good time of my life. I went to school to learn a variety of course, and went camping in the woods. I would go fishing in the lake that I mentioned early. In winter we will go ice-skating on the lake at night. In Ohio the snow could be so deep sometimes to walk in as I was not that tall at the time. It was not until I moved to California at 16 when the life was changed. That was a tough change for me because of the area was total different from Ohio. There was no rivers or lakes to fish in at all.
5. 第五句中will→would
6. 第六句中so→too
7. 第七句中when→that
10. 第九句中was→were

Come back to reality
As is shown in the picture, a woman is sitting in front of a computer and trying to make friends on the Net. Just outside the door, many people are watching, eager to make friends with her. However, they are all neglected.
The picture reminds me of many young people who are computer addicts themselves in the virtual world. What is worse is that the situation continues and sooner or later those people will be eventually cut off from the real world. There is no doubt that the virtual world can be exciting, but that’s not the reason for us to go too far. Too much time and energy devoted to the Internet will lead to a disaster both physically and mentally. In other words, the real world that we live in is what really counts.
As for myself, I’ll devote myself to more worthwhile things in real life, from making friends to studying, only in this way can I make my life full and valuable.

If doctors want to test you for something, they’ll usually take a blood or urine sample(尿样). But wouldn’t it be much more convenient if they just asked you to breathe through a special instrument?
In fact, your breath can say a lot about you. In traditional Chinese medicine, doctors draw a conclusion about the health state of a patient based on the smell of his or her breath; trained dogs and rats can identify the smells of the breaths of people suffering from certain cancers; traffic police also monitor drivers’ alcohol consumption by testing their breaths.
Just like blood and urine, your breath contains lots of “metabolites “ — the waste chemicals that the body produces, which vary from person to person. They are like personal health fingerprints, which is why scientists sometimes call them “breath prints”, according to Science Daily.
Compared to blood or urine testing, breath testing takes only seconds instead of hours, and it requires neither a needle nor a container to hold the body fluids(体液). This means the test can be taken frequently to better detect early signs of diseases and monitor the progress of a medical treatment.
On the other hand, as an identifier, you might think that breaths are not as reliable as fingerprints since they might change based on what you eat. However, researchers in Zurich, Switzerland mapped 11 healthy volunteers’ chemical patterns by having them breathe through a special instrument, and they found that each pattern was unique and the patterns didn’t change much throughout the day, reported BBC.
“Our goal is to develop breath analysis to the point where it becomes competitive with the established analysis of blood and urine,” said Malcolm Kohler, professor at the University Hospital Zurich.

(改编)The brown widow spider became established in Southern California in early 2000 and has become part of the local spider family in urban Los Angeles and San Diego. The brown widow spider is continuing its expansion in Southern California and could possibly move northward into Central California.
The brown widow is suspected to have evolved in Africa although it was first described from South America, which adds confusion as to where it might have originated. It is a tropical and subtropical spider having established populations in Hawaii, Florida, parts of Australia, South Africa and Japan. In North America, the brown widow was restricted for many decades to the Florida peninsula. However, around the year 2000, it started showing up in other Gulf Coast states. Brown widows are now known from Texas to Georgia and South Carolina.
The brown widow builds its web in protected sites around homes and in woody vegetation with branches. Some typical sites selected by brown widows for web building are empty containers such as buckets and nursery pots, mail boxes, entry way corners, under eaves, storage closets and garages, undercarriages of motor vehicles that are stationary for long periods, and the undersides of outdoor furniture. They choose places that are more exposed than sites chosen by black widows and therefore, appear to be at higher risk for interactions with humans as far as bites are concerned.
One recent study demonstrates that the brown widow spider is less poisonous than other widow species. The reason for the weaker effect of brown widow bites on humans is possibly because the brown widow does not have much poison as its larger relatives, but it is really a threat to humans as to its poison. The two major symptoms of a brown widow bite were that the bite hurt when it was given and it left a red mark. These two symptoms are not much different from the bite of normal household spiders.
There is no specific information regarding the control of brown widows by farm chemicals. Most current advice is what is used for controlling spiders in general. Therefore, most commercially available farm chemicals should work on brown widows. Avoiding a mess of the house and the garage should reduce nest sites for them. Also, one should store garage items in plastic bags where there might be interactions with spiders. These items include rarely worn garments such as gardening clothes and gloves, recreational items like sports equipment (i.e., baseball gloves) and other items where spiders can crawl up into holes where fingers can be inserted.
1. The author wrote this article to ________.
A. announce the result of a research on spiders
B. introduce the ways to get rid of the spiders
C. report a new finding of the widow species
D. warn readers against the brown widow
2. From the passage we can conclude that ________.
A. brown widows are spreading northward
B. the brown widow originated from Africa
C. brown widows now can be found in all countries
D. there used to be no brown widows in North America
3. The third paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. the brown widow’s web building
B. the characteristics of the brown widow
C. the habitat preferences of the brown widow
D. the brown widow’s threat to human beings
4. It can be inferred that ________.
A. brown widows can be killed with any farm chemicals
B. at present people can only control brown widow spiders
C. the brown widow has more poison than the black widow
D. victims bitten by the brown widow needn’t see the doctor

(2017·威海模拟)The Israeli farmers who pioneered the revolutionary technology known as drip irrigation weren’t trying to solve one of the world’s most urgent problems. They were just trying to survive. They lived in the desert, and they didn’t have enough water to grow their crops.
In its simplest form, it was little more than a pipe with holes in it. But behind each hole was a hi-tech dripper that let out just the right amount of water. Snaked along a row of crops so that the holes were positioned directly above the roots, the pipe could direct each precious drop of water directly to the plants, getting a bigger harvest while using a very small amount of the water.
Over time, the farmers improved upon the technology, perfecting the drippers that regulated the flow of water, and connecting the pipelines to computers that could determine exactly how much water each plant needed and when.
If the global population kept growing, the rest of the world would increasingly resemble their little community in the desert. So they began selling their irrigation systems in other parts of the world, eventually expanding to more than 110 countries. Netafirm, the company says it’s lifting people out of poverty and conserving water at a time when the importance of doing so has never been clearer.
The mass adoption of drip irrigation won’t save the world by itself. To avoid the coming catastrophe, nearly everybody will, in some way, have to do more with less, perhaps through accepting and using other new technologies. Otherwise, it’s going to get ugly.
9. Why is drip irrigation called“the revolutionary technology”?
A. It saves the world all by itself.
B. It is controlled by computers.
C. It makes irrigation more effective.
D. It provides deserts with water.
10. How does the drip irrigation help farmers with crops?
A. By drilling holes on the pipes.
B. By regulating water via drippers.
C. By snaking pipes along the crops.
D. By placing pipes just above roots.
11. Which of the following will be the best slogan for Netafirm to sell the irrigation systems?
A. Less water; More harvest.
B. New technology; New world.
C. More grain; Less starvation.
D. Water saving; World surviving.
