(Text 1)
W:I'm glad I don't have your job, working all night and sleeping in the daytime.
M:Oh, I stopped that when I got my promotion. Now I'm on three days and off two days.
(Text 2)
W:What do you do to keep in shape?
M:Nothing special. I love to eat out, and I eat whatever I want. But I never eat after nine at night.
(Text 3)
M:I want to put a sofa and a table in the living room.
W:Sounds nice.
M:And I plan to fix a lamp in the kitchen and a new mirror for the bathroom.
(Text 4)
M:Do you like your salad?
W:Yes. It's nice and fresh. And I'm thinking of some ice cream after it. How about yours?
M:Mine is rather tasteless.
W:Maybe you need to add some salt and olive oil.
(Text 5)
W:Lovely day, isn't it?
M:Yes, it's wonderful. Does it rain quite often here?
W:Not really in this season. Usually it rains a lot in spring. Autumn is the best season here.
M:So I am here at the right time.
(Text 6)
W:That was a good meal, Gordon.
M:It sure was. I couldn't eat another bite.
W:Well, it is getting pretty late. I think we should go home.
M:You're right. I have to get up early to go to work tomorrow.
W:Let me see how much the bill is.
M:Don't worry about it. This is my treat.
W:There's no need for you to pay the whole bill. We'll go Dutch. This way we will both have money to take a taxi home; otherwise, you will have to walk.
M:Alright.
(Text 7)
M:Hello, police station.
W:Please help me. I'm sure there's someone outside in the garden trying to get into my house. I can hear a sound like a key in the lock in the back door.
M:Would you give me your name and address, please, Miss?
W:Angela Barton, 15 Park Road, Alford. I live alone and the neighbors are away on holiday. What shall I do? I'm afraid to open the door, because there isn't a chain on it.
M:No, you'd better not take action. I'll send a car around straight away. Can I have your telephone number?
W:Yes, 982699.
M:Good. You'd better stay next to the phone until a police car arrives. The car will be there in less than five minutes.
(Text 8)
W:Good day, sir. Where do you want to go?
M:Sogo Department Store, on Jiefang East Road.
W:OK. Do you want me to go by Zhongshan Road or by Xinsheng Bridge?
M:You decide it. This is my first time to come to Beijing. I am not familiar with the streets.
W:OK. I will take Xinsheng Bridge. I guess, at this time of the day, Zhongshan Road is a little crowded.
M:Well, how much does it cost for the first kilometer?
W:Ten yuan. And it will be two yuan for every additional 500 meters. Your destination is about 2 kilometers away.
M:I see. Is it usually easy to call a cab in Beijing?

M:I think so. Then how long it will take to get there?
W:Well, about twenty minutes.

M:Not really. The game usually starts at 6:00 pm. When I finished work this afternoon, it was only five o'clock. So I thought I'd go and watch a game.
W:Oh, you must have had a great time. Do you still go swimming on Fridays?
M:No, I've changed to the day before Friday because there aren't so many people then.
W:By the way, I didn't see you at the park last Sunday afternoon.

W:What did you do after that?
M:We went dancing in the evening and had a great time. What about you?
W:I had a date with some of my friends. What do you do on Tuesdays?
M:Most Tuesdays I have to work late at the office, so there isn't much time for anything afterwards.
W:Boy, you surely have a full week.
(Text 10)
OK, we are here to decide who should be “Teacher of the Year”. We have some excellent teachers that we have to choose from. So let's get started. First, let's talk about Mr. Ryan. He's pretty new to our school — he came here last year. Everyone says he's inspiring. And he has a lot of energy. Next, Mrs. Lafferty's on our list. She was“Teacher of the Year” last year! She's really intelligent and her classes are great. Students love her because she is so encouraging. She always gives support by saying good things. OK, next is Mr Peters. To tell the truth, he isn't such a popular teacher. His class is hard but he's serious and people respect him. The last teacher on our list is Ms. Jones. She's also serious and she works hard. She often stays after school to meet with students to help them with their studies. OK. That's all the information of these teachers. Why don't we take a five-minute break to think about this and come back and decide?

Are you looking for a place to spend a holiday? Here are two great beaches for you to consider.
Yasawa Island Beach, Fiji
The Yasawa Islands are popular for unspoiled (未经破坏的) beaches and clear blue-green waters. Many mountains stand nearby as well. They offer people a much-needed break from their busy lives. With natural beauty and a lot of sunshine, the islands have become a perfect place to relax. Popular with backpackers, the South Pacific islands also offer many activities such as sailing, visiting local villages and enjoying and evening on the beach with campfires and barbecues. In particular, the Yasawa Island Beach is an affordable relaxing place for tourists.
Eagle Beach, Aruba
Even if you are not one of many American students taking a break from the stresses of college life, you have probably heard people talk about the island — how it offers wild adventures and relaxing activities. No one can say “no” to its Caribbean charm (魅力). In particular, if you have been to Eagle Beach, you will never regret the trip to Aruba. Like an eagle that spreads its wings widely, the beach is known for its long coastline. The Eagle Beach is also known for its soft white sands and clear waters. When I took Amy home from the animal shelter, she was scared. I believed she had been abused (虐待) because she was afraid of anything my husband, Bill, or I held in our hands. With a lot of care and attention, she became a great dog that surprised us every day.
About three years ago, Amy and I joined a volunteer project called Canines with Class. At our first school visit, Officer Lisa called Amy and asked her to show how to shake hands and give a high five. The students clapped (拍手) in joy and Amy received a reward. Then the students got to touch the dog. One by one they came up to meet Amy. Some of them started talking to me about their own pets. I didn't feel worried any more. I thought the children liked staying with us.
On our next school visit, I put a big chain (链条) on Amy's neck and walked away from her. You could see that Amy was not happy. When I took the chain off her neck, Amy shook her tail happily and wouldn't stop licking (舔) my face. That was when we talked about “breaking the chain”.
On our third school trip, Amy started acting poorly when it was time to show off a few tricks. The students watched to see how I would correct her mistakes. It was a good chance to explain that if your dog doesn't do exactly what you ask, you don't have to shout at her or hit her to make it right. I think the children have learned a lot about respect and patience.
Amy loves the program and has come so far since I found her a few years ago. Amy has broken the chain, and the love she gives those children will help them become good pet owners.

The Museum of London is starting to unearth what might turn out to be as many as 3,000 human skeletons (遗骸) under a train station in the United Kingdom's capital. The bones were exposed when workers began building a new entrance to a train station in London, England.
As the first city burial (埋葬) ground in London, Bedlam was probably used between 1569 and 1738. Its name comes from the nearby Hospital of Saint Mary of Bethlehem, which people also called Bedlam. Often, the people buried in Bedlam could not afford to be buried anywhere else. The burial ground also served as an overflow cemetery (墓地). That means that if other cemeteries became full, a person would be buried in Bedlam instead. It is believed that there could be a total of 20,000 skeletons in the overall burial ground.
Experts think studying the skeletons may help them learn about London's past, including questions about the Black Death, a deadly disease that had a terrible influence on much of the world. It started in the mid-1300s and swept through Asia, Africa, and Europe. Historians believe almost 50 million people died of the disease, including many of those buried at Bedlam. “Sixteen sixty-five saw the very last recorded period of the disease,” says Jay Carver, the leading expert on the project. Carver and his team believe the Bedlam bodies may explain why the outbreak suddenly stopped.
The dig site also sits above an even older Roman (古罗马的) road (between the 2nd and 3rd century A.D.). Archaeologists (考古学家) have already found a large number of objects from Roman times, including horseshoes and urns. Nick Elsden, the project manager for the site, says,“This is the UK's largest archaeology project, in what is one of the oldest areas of the city, so we stand to learn a great deal.”
28.The underlined word “exposed” in Paragraph 1 can best be replaced by “________”.
A.discovered B.searched
C.returned D.studied
解析:选A 词义猜测题。由该词后的“when workers began building a new entrance to a train station”可知,当工人们开始修建通往一个火车站的新入口时发现了这些遗骸,故选A项。
29.We can learn from the text that Bedlam________.
A.served as a cemetery for rich people
B.was once taken up by the Romans
C.got its name thanks to Jay Carver
D.used to be a train station
解析:选B 推理判断题。由最后一段中的“The dig site also sits above an even older Roman (古罗马的) road”和“a large number of objects from Roman times”可知,Bedlam曾被古罗马人侵占,故选B项。
30.What was expressed in Nick Elsden's words?
A.Pride. B.Praise.
C.Excitement. D.Kindness.
解析:选C 推理判断题。由最后一段中的“This is the UK's largest archaeology project ... we stand to learn a great deal.”可知,对于这一发现他非常兴奋,故选C项。
31.What would be the best title for the text?

B.A Roman road in Bedlam

Part of the reason that English has grown as a world language is that it easily adjusts to (适应) change. However, this means that what one was taught as a child in school may be out of date many years later. When words or phrases change, it can make speakers feel “wrong” because they were taught that something else was “right.”
One example of this is a term connected to school itself. Today, it is common for people to say that they “graduated high school” or college. The word “graduate” has two common meanings. One is to mark off a series. The other meaning is closely related. As you move through school, you cross off a series of achievements: grade school, middle school, high school, and college. So, in a way, school itself is “graduated.”
So, when people used to speak of getting a degree, they said they “graduated from college.” “To graduate college” would have meant to mark it off by year — the first year, the second year etc. Similarly, “to graduate to college” would have meant to complete high school and move up to the next level.
But as happens often in English, when people understand your meaning, smaller words can disappear. “I graduated college” is now easy to say. This may distress people who were taught that you had to use “from” to be correct. But this is not the first time this phrase has been simplified. It used to be that you said, “I was graduated from college,” instead of, “I graduated from college.”
You can't know what English will keep and what it will lose. Who could imagine that we would still say we “dial” a phone number when we now push buttons on our cellphone? Yet we know what it means.
32.What do we know about the word “graduate”?
A.It has two similar meanings.
B.There was a change in its meanings.
C.It had nothing to do with school at first.
D.It got an extra meaning during its development.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The word ‘graduate’ has two common meanings. One is to mark off a series. The other meaning is closely related.”可知,graduate一词有两个相近的意思。
33.Which of the following is the newest usage of “graduate”?
A.I was graduated from college.
B.I was to graduate to college.
C.I graduated from college.
D.I graduated college.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“what one was taught as a child in school may be out of date many years later”和第二段中的“One example of ... or college.”可知,I graduated college是最新的用法。
34.The underlined word “distress” probably means “________”.
A.change B.correct
C.worry D.hurt
解析:选C 词义猜测题。根据画线词后的“who were taught that you had to use ‘from’ to be correct”可知,对于那些在学校学的是I graduated from college的人来说,他们认为I graduated college是错误的说法,然而现在人们却经常这样说,这让他们感到不安。故distress和worry意思相近。
35.What's the best title for the text?
A.Right or wrong?
B.Words come and go in English
C.English is a very changeable language
D.How should English be taught in school?
解析:选B 标题归纳题。文章第一段点出英语在发展变化,第二至四段举例说明graduate一词的用法,最后一段中的“You can't know what English will keep and what it will lose.”更是点出文章的主旨。故B项作标题贴切。

参考范文:
Recently our English Club has had a debate about whether there should be policies on controlling the purchase of private cars in our city. We had different opinions.
Some people support it. They say nowadays a large number of people own private cars, which has caused many problems, such as air pollution, traffic jams and an increase of energy use. There is no doubt that controlling the number of private cars will reduce these problems.
However, others think differently. They argue that they have the right to buy cars. What's more, if they don't have their own car, it isn't convenient for them to go out, whether for work or travel.
As for me, I agree with the former. In fact, we can use other forms of transport like buses, subways and bicycles.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Sport is not only physically challenging, but can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create too much anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents' and coaches' criticisms to heart and find faults in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also pay attention that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today's youth sport setting young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find faults with youngsters' performances. Positive support should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive support motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.

Many people consider their dogs to be their children. They call them their “fur babies” and include them in family events. They even celebrate their birthdays, talk to them all the time, and feed them food from the table. Well, if you're doing these things, you're acting like a lot of dog owners. The problem is, if you are, then you're doing all of the wrong things for your dogs. As I like to say, in Mexico, dogs are very thin but happy. In other places, they are fat and neurotic (神经质的).
Considering your dogs to be your children is actually the worst thing you can ever do for them. This is natural for humans, but unnatural for dogs. To prove it, all you have to do is go to a dog park and look at which dogs other dogs want to play with and give respect to. They're not the ones we would describe as cute. They're the dogs that are calm and confident. They may be big or small. They may be “cute” or “ugly”. All they see is energy, and the dogs that are calm and energetic are the leaders. That's how it works in the dog world.
When we treat our dogs as little humans, we give them nothing but love. That's not all that they want. Imagine that as a child, you want to become a singer. It's what you love to do and you have a talent for it, but your parents put you on the hockey team instead. You're not into sports, you can't skate, and you're terrible at hockey, but your parents are there at every game, cheering you on and telling you how good you are. And you hate every second of it.
That is what it's like for a dog when we don't let it be a dog. This will, however, make your dog neurotic and confused.
28.In Paragraph 1, the author wants to say that many dog owners_________.
A.are very nice to their dogs
B.know well what their dogs want
C.treat their dogs in a wrong way
D.keep dogs because they have no children
解析:选C 写作意图题。根据第一段的“The problem is, if you are, then you're doing all of the wrong things for your dogs.”可知,作者是想说:很多人都在错误地对待他们的狗。
29.What can we know about dogs in Mexico?
A.They are very well fed.
B.They live an unhappy life.
C.They aren't treated as children.
D.They don't like running around.
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第一段的“As I like to say, in Mexico, dogs are very thin but happy. In other places, they are fat and neurotic (神经质的).”可推断,在墨西哥,狗就是狗,而不是被当作孩子来对待。
30.Dogs like playing with and showing respect to those dogs that are_________.
A.cute and small
B.fat and neurotic
C.thin but happy
D.calm, energetic and confident
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第二段的“They're the dogs ...are the leaders.”可知应选D项。
31.What does the author want to show by giving the example in Paragraph 3?
A.Dogs hate what they are given.
B.Dogs don't care about love that much.
C.Dogs have a lot in common with humans.
D.Dogs should be let to do what they truly love.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第三段的“You're not into ...second of it.”可推断,作者是想用这个例子表明:狗应该被允许去做它们真正喜欢的事情。

For many of us, not having to run for traffic to and from work, sitting before our laptops in comfortable clothes and having tea breaks whenever we like are some of the easily seen advantages of working at home. But according to a new study, working in the office can also be good for our health and productivity (工作效率).
Research has found that those who work in the office get better work satisfaction and suffer less from “work exhaustion (精疲力竭)”, meaning they enjoy better sleep. When it comes to sex, studies found that women are more likely to perform better in an office environment.
Researchers from the University of Stanford did a study based on 255 workers at a large firm based in China. Half of the workers were based in the office and the other half were based at home, working the same periods of time for nine months.
While the productivity of office-based workers remained stable (稳定的), there were disparities in productivity compared to the home-based control group. Those who worked in the office were about 13% more productive as well as being more productive by the minute. Some of the reasons for higher productivity of the office workers included less noise to influence them, fewer breaks and fewer sick days.
Yet working in the office may not be for everyone. In another study by the University of Calgary in 2014, research found that when it comes to work-away-from-home productivity, personality (个性) is key in whether office working will be a success. It also found that workers who are honest, responsible and enjoy their jobs are productive at home, while workers who are unable to control themselves are less productive at home.
语篇解读:虽然我们很喜欢在家里办公的舒适和自由,但经研究发现,在办公室上班对上班人员的健康和工作效率有益,但这并不意味着所有人都适合在办公室上班。
32.According to Paragraph 1, what does the new study tell us about working in the office?
A.It is the best way of working.
B.It has various disadvantages.
C.It makes work less comfortable.
D.It benefits workers' health and productivity.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第一段的“But according to ...good for our health and productivity (工作效率).”可知应选D。
33.Compared to men, women_________.
A.love working at home better
B.have higher productivity at work
C.work better in the office than at home
D.are more likely to suffer exhaustion at work
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第二段的“When it comes to sex, studies found that women are more likely to perform better in an office environment.”可知,跟男性相比,女性在办公室上班比在家里上班效率更高。
34.What does the underlined word “disparities” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Changes. B.Differences.
C.Suggestions. D.Disadvantages.
35.After reading the text, we can conclude that ________.
A.honest people usually prefer to work at home
B.people are unable to control themselves if they work at home
C.working at home is much better than working away from home
D.working in the office is suitable for people with low self-control ability
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据末段的“...while workers who are unable to control themselves are less productive at home.”可知,对于那些自控能力比较差的人来说,他们更适合在办公室工作。

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to stay focused in class
?__36__ No matter how much you want to sit with your friends during the class, try your best to avoid them. Talking with friends is not going to help you stay focused (集中注意力的) in class and will cause trouble, too.
?Look at the teacher. Your teacher is not just standing up there talking — they're trying to give you an acceptable education. Show the teacher that he or she has your full attention, by looking him or her in the eye. __37__
?Take notes. By taking notes, you'll be able to “get into” the lesson. __38__ Listen for key phrases such as,“This is important,” “This is the main idea,” etc. This can help you listen more intently (专心地); you'll have something to do and focus on.
?Get involved (参与) in class discussions. This is a wonderful way to become a more focused, successful student. When a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it. __39__ This shows the teacher that you're listening intently during the class.
?Ask a question. __40__ This really shows your teacher that you want to be better, and can recognize the things you're having difficulty with. Chances are, someone else in the class has the same question (and is too afraid to ask!). They'll be relaxed — and so will you.
A.Do your best.
B.Avoid sitting with friends.
C.Don't try to finish your old notes in class.
D.Write down key points as your teacher speaks.
E.If he or she asks for an opinion, share your own.
F.If you don't understand something, never be afraid to ask.
G.This person should have your full attention at all times in class.
36.选B 该段主要介绍要尽量避免在课堂上和朋友坐在一起,因为和朋友聊天会影响注意力并且招来麻烦。由此可知,B项概括了该段的大意。
37.选G 根据上一句中的“Show the teacher that he or she has your full attention”可知,课堂上,你应该将注意力放在老师身上。G项中的“This person”指的就是老师,其中的“have your full attention”也与上一句中的“has your full attention”相呼应。
38.选D 根据该段的小标题Take notes和该空后的“Listen for key phrases”可知,D项“在老师讲课时将要点记录下来”符合语境。
39.选E 根据上一句“When a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it.”可知,E项与之相呼应。
40.选F 根据该段的小标题Ask a question可知,F项符合此处语境,也与该段中的“too afraid to ask”相呼应。

Sports are good for our health. They can make us strong, prevent us from getting too fat and keep us fit. Especially they can be of great value to people who work with their brains most of the day because sports can make them relax.
At the same time, they make our life richer and more colourful. We can enjoy ourselves by watching or taking part in all kinds of sports or matches, such as swimming, skating, ball games and so on.
Sports are also very useful in teenagers' character building. For boys and girls, what is learned on the playground often has a deep influence on their character.

“All right,” said the boy and he kept one dollar and gave the rest of the money to the shopkeeper. He was just going to leave the shop when he heard the words. “Come back! Dear students,
Most of us get some exercise walking or riding our bikes to school, but that just isn't enough. Why not get into shape by playing the most popular sport in the world — soccer?
Two weeks ago, Ms. Goldstein, the physical education teacher, posted a notice about an exciting new soccer club (for Grades 3-5). To join, all you have to do is sign your name and be at school for the fun of it on Saturday mornings. You'll make new friends and share information about famous teams and players.
Ms. Goldstein will teach, so you'll learn basic skills and new techniques (技巧) to improve your game. That's good news because soccer is a game you can love three seasons a year. The only time you can't play is when there is snow.
However, it is hard to believe that only nineteen people signed up for the new club. Maybe kids don't want to give up their Saturday mornings. But if you think about how we spend Saturday mornings now, soccer looks good. Doing housework and watching TV are not as much fun as playing soccer with friends. If you didn't sign up because you've never played soccer before, don't worry. Beginners are welcome and Ms. Goldstein will give you more help.
Just act now! The equipment is cheap. All you have to bring is your feet.

One day Kavya and I were playing tennis and the ball went into a man's house. Then we went to his house and asked if he could give us our ball. He said, “No”. We felt helpless. But suddenly we came up with an idea. There was a water tank (水箱) behind the man's house. I told Kavya, “We can climb onto the water tank and jump over the gate.” Kavya agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. We couldn't climb in those. “We can get it back tomorrow,” said Kavya.
The next day we went there with Kavya's brother Vijay. He said, “Shout loudly if you need me.” Kavya climbed onto the water tank first and then she climbed down into the man's house. I followed her. We were looking under a bed for the ball when we heard a noise. It was Vijay. “Mother is calling you,” he said in a low voice.
We hurried out taking the lost ball with us. Along with the ball was a surprise! But we had to leave the house quickly. When we reached Kavya's house, the TV was on. It was news time. I couldn't believe my ears when it said that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars, which were exactly like the one we had seen in the man's house.
We told the story to Kavya's mother right away, and she called the police. Soon the police caught the man. They found all the gold bars in his house. As a little girl, one of my favorite family traditions was held on the first day of May. Along with my sister, my mother and I would make simple flower baskets by making paper into cones (圆锥形). Then, we filled the bottom of the cone with small candies before putting some flowers into it.
With our May Day baskets in hand, my sister and I became anonymous_gift-givers. After hanging a basket on the front door of a neighbor or friend, we rang the doorbell and ran away. The goal was to remain secret givers.
Historically, the first day of May, often referred to as “May Day,” has been recognized as a celebration of spring, of life and growth. Parades (游行) and dances are ways that the day has been — and continues to be — celebrated in many parts of the world. Although formal May Day celebrations may be less common now, it is always worth celebrating. Here are some simple and lovely ways to celebrate May Day in our homes and with those we love:
Making a May Day basket is always a great choice. Although the May Day basket we made as children was simple, the making of the basket was a joy in itself. Consider making or buying some flowers for friends. Fill the basket with a few sweets and write a note thanking your friend or neighbor for their kindness, their presence, and their love.
On May Day, we also take flowers to a local hospital or nursing home. Flowers are always welcome in places that are too often full of sadness. Stopping to have a conversation with a patient and thanking a nurse would be an additional gift — to the receiver and to us!
Besides, we always give friends small gifts to celebrate May Day. A small book or magazine with a note, an art print celebrating spring — the choices are endless. When your friends are far away, an unexpected gift can reawaken friendship across the miles.
28.The underlined part “anonymous gift-givers” refers to people who ________.
A.are serious about gift-giving
B.don't know the value of gifts
C.are careful about every small detail
D.don't want their names to be known

B.The date of its celebration has changed.
C.It traditionally celebrates the arrival of spring.
D.There is an increase in formal May Day celebrations.

30.In the author's eyes, May Day is a great chance to________.

C.read a book or magazine
D.stay with family members
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“write a note thanking your friend or neighbor for their kindness, their presence, and their love”和第五段中的“thanking a nurse”可知,在作者看来,五朔节是一个很好的表达感激的机会。
31.What is the text mainly about?

C.Celebrating May Day.
D.Flowers for festivals.

A few months ago, Jason asked his parents to buy him a computer. All his friends already had one, so his mom and dad agreed. During the first few weeks, Jason spent a lot of time in front of his computer because he had to learn how it worked. He was really interested in learning all about it and he even started writing computer programs himself.
One day Jason found a website where he could play chess either against the computer or against other people from all over the world. From then on, Jason seemed to have just one interest in life, his computer. Whenever his parents told him that he was spending too much time with his computer, Jason_went_into_denial. He did not think that he had a problem at all.
Then the unthinkable happened: Jason's computer broke down. But his parents decided not to buy him a new one. Jason said that he needed a computer for school, and he promised that he'd spend less time with it. But his parents refused to give in. Finally, Jason felt so hopeless that he took the only way out and killed himself.
Robert Johnson, a psychologist (心理学家) on the subject, says, “Computer addiction (沉溺) is an illness that can influence anyone of us. Lisa wanted to be an artist, but she didn't have enough money to go to an art school. She was working at a job she didn't enjoy. On August 1st, Lisa bought one ticket and won two million dollars. She quit her job three weeks later and now she is attending an art school. Mark was a car salesman. He worked seven days a week and had little time for his family. After he won the lottery, he quit working. Now he spends his time bowling, working in the garden, and fixing things in his house. But he's bored. He doesn't want to sell cars again, but he isn't sure what he wants to do with his life. Jack is one of the small number of winners who did not quit his job. Jack still teaches at a school near his home. But now he and his wife take their children on an interesting vacation every year. And they won't worry about the charge for their children in colleges. They say that money brings security and gives opportunities, but it doesn't bring happiness.

Dear Dr. Bob,
I was visiting my sister Mary, who has two boys, ages seven and five. They were throwing a ball around the living room. She asked them several times to stop, but they didn't listen to her. Finally, one of the boys threw the ball and knocked over a lamp. She shouted loudly at them for several minutes. Then, she sent them to their room. She looked at me and said, “They never listen to me.”
Carmen
Dear Carmen,
Your sister needs to be clear to her children what behavior she expects. She should tell her boys, “Don't throw the ball in the house. If you throw the ball again, I'm going to take it.” Then, she needs to do what she says. Her boys will soon learn to listen to her.
Dr. Bob
Dear Dr. Bob,
I walked into my two-year-old daughter's bedroom and found her coloring on the wall again with her crayons. I told her, “No! No! Never write on the wall with your crayons. You can only write on paper.” My husband thinks I was too easy on her and that she needed a spanking (打屁股). What is your opinion?
Debbie
Dear Debbie,
You dealt with the situation well. Children this age are too little to understand the relationship between their actions and a spanking. Use this as a warning; it's time to_babyproof_your_home. Now that your little one is more active and curious (好奇的), what else can she reach? Dr. Bob

23.Both Mary and Debbie found it hard to ________.
A.ask their children to follow rules
B.stop their children from telling lies
C.get their children to go to bed on time
D.develop their children's interest in reading

Clover, a three-year-old spirit bear, lives at the B.C.Wildlife Park near Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. He lost his parents two years ago and was raised at a wildlife center. When he was set free into the wild, he broke into human camps looking for food. Wildlife experts (专家) tried to get him used to living on his own, but he continued to look for places where there were people. Finally the experts decided that he could not live in the wild. Since then, a total ofD|S750,000 has been collected to create a habitat for Clover.
The habitat covers about three acres (英亩) of land and includes natural forest, two ponds connected by a small river and something else. It will add a platform and a walkway later this year so that people can see Clover and his habitat more closely. There will also be a center where people can learn more about spirit bears. Besides, a black bear will be moved into the habitat so Clover will not feel lonely.
Spirit bears are also called Kermode bears after Francis Kermode, who first studied them. Kermode discovered that a small number of black bears carry a gene (基因) for white fur. If a baby bear receives one of these genes from each parent, its fur will be a creamy white color. There are about 1,200 bears who carry the gene for white fur, but only about 200 white Kermode bears in the world. Kermode bears are found only in British Columbia. They live in the Great Bear Rainforest, an area that covers the mainland and islands along the coast of B.C.between Vancouver and Alaska.

Those pretty little brown spots on the skin might be common, but freckles (雀斑) remain a bit of a mystery to many — including those who have them. We interviewed three top skin doctors to explain the mysterious spots.
“They get darker in the summertime, when the skin is in strong sunlight, and fade, or lose color, in the wintertime,” says Dr. Joshua Zeichner at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. “The sun's ultraviolet rays (紫外线) help some skin cells to produce more melanin (黑色素) in the skin.”
Contrary to (与……相反) popular belief, nobody is born with freckles, which generally don't pop_up until adolescence. That is, some young people start to have freckles when they are developing into adults.
“But freckles often ‘run in the family’, especially in families that have fair skin,” says Jessica Wu, MD, a Los Angeles-based doctor. “People with fair skin and red or blond hair may have the same skin cells as their parents. Such skin cells are more sensitive (敏感的) to ultraviolet rays, so they produce more melanin in those spots.”
The spots themselves are nothing to fear, but those who have freckles are often fair-skinned as well, which in turn makes them more likely to get skin cancer, warns Dr. Howard Murad, who is known as “the Father of Internal Skincare”.
Freckles can be lightened with proper treatment, and new freckles often fade on their own. As with many things in life, prevention is key. “Wear sunscreen every day as part of your lifestyle, like brushing your teeth,” says Zeichner. Wu agrees, “I do warn my patients with freckles to understand the necessity of wearing sunscreen.”
Safe sun practice is important for everyone, but having freckles means you need to be extra careful. “You are likely to get more of them — in addition to risk of skin cancer — if you don't use sun protection,” warns Wu.

You may hear the expression: “If you give a person a fish, they will eat for a day. If you teach a person to fish, they can eat for a lifetime.”
One way to explain this is that helping people grow their own food is a better way to fight hunger. That is the purpose of an agricultural research organization called HarvestPlus.HarvestPlus is teaching people around the world how to grow what it calls “smart” crops (庄稼). Its project in Mozambique, a country in Southeast Africa, is having surprising influences.
Sweet potatoes have vitamin (维生素) A, which keeps your eyes healthy and helps the body fight disease. In 2006, HarvestPlus workers provided orange sweet potato plants to people in 24 Mozambique villages. The workers taught these people how to grow the vegetables and also explained the importance of vitamin A to staying healthy.
Farmers in Mozambique had been planting white and yellow sweet potatoes, which have very little vitamin A. However, one small, orange sweet potato has a full day's supply of vitamin A.
Alan de Brauw from the International Food Policy Research Institute says about 70 percent of children there were not getting enough vitamin A. He says the potatoes had a surprising influence on the health of children. At the end of the three-year study, the researchers found that children living in villages growing orange sweet potatoes had 40 percent fewer chances of getting diarrhea (痢疾) than other boys and girls. Among children under the age of three, the difference was 50 percent.
Experts (专家) are suggesting that connecting agriculture and health problems is natural and helpful. Anne Herforth, a food expert, says the findings do a good job making the connection between food production and health. “Look, you produce a food and it's available to people to eat and they like it; then it does good things for health.”

(Text 2)
M:Where were you last night? At your brother's house?
W:No, he annoyed me a lot when I watched a film, so I went to the cinema instead of his house.
(Text 3)
M:I've just seen the X-rays and your teeth look just fine.
W:I see. Then there is nothing to worry about after all.
M:Yes. But you have to watch out when you play basketball next time.
(Text 4)
W:I can't believe you failed the test again!
M:Mum, I'm terrible at chemistry, just like math!
W:I was good at math when I was a student.
M:OK, but for me, it is the most difficult subject.
(Text 5)
M:May I borrow your bike? I'm going to the Forest Park.
W:It'll take you a long time to get there by bike.
M:Do you know any buses that can take me there?
W:No. 8 bus. But the subway will be much faster. You'd better take it.
(Text 6)
M:Hey, you're on the air with Lori Kool.
W:Lori, wow. I love your music. Your first album Ice Cream Scream is my all-time favorite!
M:Thanks very much.
W:I want to know where you often listen to music, Lori.
M:Where? Um, I listen a lot at home, in my living room. I've got a nice new stereo system.
W:That sounds great. I've got tons of CDs as well. They take up an entire wall of my living room.
(Text 7)
W:What a big zoo! I have never seen such a big zoo before.
M:Yeah. There are pandas, tigers, monkeys, elephants, seahorses and many kinds of birds.
W:Great! I like pandas very much. Where are they?
M:Let me show you. Look! This is the gate. Go through the gate into the zoo, and you'll see a small hill on your right. That is the monkey hill. Opposite the hill, there are some big cages. They're the tigers' home. Next to the cages, you can see a big pool. Walk by the pool, and you'll find a lot of trees in front of you. Many kinds of birds live there and pandas always play there, too.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to complain about the bad service that I received in your restaurant last Friday.
First of all, we were given a table just in front of the toilets because there was not any other table available, although we had booked one in advance. Secondly, we had to wait for half an hour to be served. I remember clearly that we arrived at 7:30 pm. After the long wait we had to change our minds and ask for meat because there was no seafood left.
To make matters worse, my husband found a dead fly in his soup. We were shocked and wanted to leave. So we asked for the bill, expecting we wouldn't have to pay for my husband's meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that you were on holiday. At last, I was forced to pay $65 instead of $34 just for mine.
Today I really want you to know about these unfortunate incidents. I very much hope that in future you will take care of these mistakes.
Yours faithfully,
Carmen Pliego
第二部分 阅读理解 (满分40分,限时35分钟)
第一节(共15小题; 每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
I have lived in America's countryside for nine years, first in Michigan, where I was getting my university degree; then in central Illinois; and now in Indiana, where I am a university teacher. There were a few things I enjoyed complaining (抱怨) about in my living area. I'm a vegetarian (素食者), so there's nowhere to go out for a nice dinner without taking a 50-mile drive. I'm black, so there's nowhere to get my hair done without another 50-mile drive.
I repeated these complaints to my parents and my friends. Sometimes it seemed like complaints were the common language in my circle. We all were dissatisfied with something. Back in Illinois, my friends complained about the train to Chicago and how it's never on time; my friends in bigger cities complained about the expensive rent and strange smells on the subway.
Complaining allows us to accept the imperfect without having to take action. We all have great ideas about what life would be like if only we had this, or did that, or lived there. Perhaps complaining helps bridge the large space between these perfect selves and reality.
There's also this: I really didn't want to change most of the things I complained about. Complaining was helpful on those days when happiness required too much energy. But it also made me lose sight of something. I was born and grew up in Nebraska and have lived most of my life in one of the plains states. When I went to the coasts, I was surprised by how unattractive big-city living can be.
Complaining may offer relief, but so does acceptance. There is no perfect place. There is no perfect life. There will always be something to complain about. By focusing on (关注) my complaints, I risked missing out on important moments of happiness. Now, I look up into the night sky and see all the stars. And I know that I have nothing to complain about.

It all started a few years ago in the quiet village of Mollington after a number of burglaries (盗窃). Those living in the village came up with the idea that they themselves could keep an eye on their neighbours' property (财产) while they were away on holiday. Since then, with the help of the government and police, more than 50,000 “Neighbourhood Watch” schemes (项目) have been set up in the UK.
The object of each “Watch” group is to prevent things like this from happening again in any street or area. Each villager who is a member of the scheme agrees to do their best to stop anyone stealing something in the village. Everything is done calmly and carefully — it is the police who check out each report and find out what is happening. Villagers who are part of the group are not supposed to act as police or put themselves in any danger.
When a new “Neighbourhood Watch” scheme is set up in an area, the first thing people notice is the large, brightly coloured “Neighbourhood Watch” board. This is a real warning to most burglars, because very few of them will take a chance of breaking into someone's house if they know that there is a high risk of being seen by neighbours keeping a lookout. Burglars also know that people who are part of the “Neighbourhood Watch” schemes are more likely to have fitted good locks to their doors and windows.
Since the “Neighbourhood Watch” scheme was set up, there are fewer burglaries and there is a new community spirit. It is bringing people together as never before, and encouraging people to care for each other. New friendships are also being made.
25.The “Neighbourhood Watch” scheme in Mollington was started ________.
A.as the first of its kind in the UK
B.after 50,000 burglaries in the area
C.because the police were short of hands

27.What does the author think of the scheme?
A.He doubts it. B.It is worrying.
C.It is successful. D.He is uncertain about it.

Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music.
To begin with, “muzak” (音乐广播网) was intended simply to create a soothing (安慰) atmosphere. Recently, however, it's become big business — thanks in part to recent research. Dr Ronald Milliman, an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.
However, it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always the answer. Dr Milliman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play uptempo music to keep the customers moving — unless of course, the resulting indigestion (消化不良) leads to complaints!

B.it increases their sales
C.it keeps customers moving
D.it decreases their sales
解析:选D 推理判断题。由文章最后一段可以看出,如果播放慢速背景音乐,客人的就餐时间就会变长,这样就会导致营业额的整体下滑。这样的结果餐馆老板自然要抱怨。
31.We can know from the text that ________.
A.background music was first used in big department stores
B.proper music can increase the selling of goods
C.light music has a bad effect on production
D.restaurant owners had better play slow music to comfort their customers

Dear Mr and Mrs Smith,
How time flies!
I have already returned to China safe and sound. When I think of the wonderful two weeks I spent in America, I just can't help thinking of both of you and want to express my gratitude to you. It was so kind of you to have provided everything to make my stay such a happy and wonderful experience. I have learned quite a lot, not only of English but also of your culture. And I really enjoyed the fun and laughter we shared with each other. It was your hospitality and great help that made my journey fruitful and worthwhile.
I will cherish the merry memories for the rest of my life. I hope we can keep in touch.
