(Text 1)
M: Operator, I've been trying to make phone call for nearly 10 minutes and I just can't get through.
W: Just tell me the number and I'll try it for you.
(Text 2)
W: Tom!
M: Yes?
W: Could you please take this tape recorder to my office for me?
M: With pleasure. And let me carry some of these exercise books for you.
(Text 3)
W: Nice weather we're having.
M: Yes. Isn't it a nice surprise? At this time it's usually much colder and raining already.
W: Well, this weather will probably end soon; all the leaves on the trees are brown, and it's been pretty cold at night.
(Text 4)
M: Hurry up, Jenny. It's already seven. We'll be late for the film.
W: Don't worry dear, we still have twenty minutes. And it takes us only fifteen minutes to get there. We'll be there just in time.
(Text 5)
M: Would you remind me when we get to Buckingham Palace, Please?
W: Sure, no problem! Now we are at Oxford Street, and we can get there in thirty minutes.
(Text 6)
W: Slow down. Why are you in such a hurry?
M: Hi, Cindy. I was just looking for you. Do you know your painting was chosen to be exhibited at the City's Student Art Show?
W: Really? Who told you that?
M: I just learned it from the principal's office.
W: Are you sure you heard it right?
M: Of course. I saw the notice with my own eyes. I wanted to be the first person to bring the news to you. That's why I rushed here.
W: I really can't believe it.
M: Well, I'm glad I am the first to congratulate you.
W: Thanks, Lester, for bringing me the good news.
(Text 7)
W: Hello, glad to see you. Come in, please.
M: Thanks. It looks like the party is exciting and all are in high spirits.
W: Yeah. And they're enjoying all kinds of French foods here. Well, I'd like you to meet my brother, Tom. He is visiting me for the weekend.
M: Where is he?
W: He is sitting in the corner over there, and beside the young woman.
M: And who is the young woman? Uh, the woman wearing a red coat.
W: Oh, that's Ann, my piano teacher.
M: Piano teacher! I never knew you were practicing the piano.
(Text 8)
M: Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here?
W: No, not at all. Go ahead.
M: Thank you.
W: Are you going somewhere or meeting someone?
M: I am on my way to Washington. And you?
W: I am on my way to San Francisco.
M: Really? I think San Francisco is probably the most exciting city in the US.
W: So do I. No other city has as many good restaurants or as much good music.
M: Is San Francisco your hometown?
W: I am from a very small town in Pennsylvania. I wouldn't want to live there again, either. I don't like to live in a small town very much.
M: Neither do I. But small towns have their advantages: less traffic.
W: And friendlier people. You know, I'm beginning to feel homesick. By the way, where are you from?
M: China.
W: China? But you speak English like a native speaker. I didn't have any idea.
M: Thank you! Oh, excuse me. It's time for my flight. Well, it's been nice talking with you.
W: You too. Bye!
(Text 9)
W: Good morning. Can I help you?
M: Yes, please. I want to find out about the bus service between here and my home in Detroit. I came here last week by train, but I think I want to return by bus. I like to try different ways of traveling.
W: I'll try to help you. Here is our timetable. It shows that we have eight buses a day that leave Cleveland for Detroit. I think you'll find that service is cheaper than the train's.
M: Yes, it looks as though the tickets are quite a bit cheaper than the train tickets. Why is that?
W: The bus trips take a little longer than the train trips, and we don't have a dining car or a waiting room. We do have a rest room, however, the bus is air-conditioned. The trip should be comfortable.
M: How long is the trip?
W: We have an express bus that takes a little more than three hours, and we have a bus that stops at several cities along the way. It's of course cheaper, but it takes a little more than four hours. If you don't mind the extra traveling time, it's our best bargain.
M: Can I use my return ticket from the train to pay for my bus ticket?
W: No, you'll have to take that ticket back to the train station. That's a different company. They'll give your money back, and then you can buy a ticket from me here for the bus.
M: Thank you, Madam. I want to talk this over with my aunt and uncle before I make the final decision. Thanks for your help.
(Text 10)

You'll take a reading, grammar, and composition test. Oh, and also a listening test. The whole test takes three hours. Next, you will meet in small groups with a teacher. This meeting will be about important things you need to know. This is where you can ask a lot of questions. Then, finally, this afternoon, you will take a campus tour. Vincent Van Gogh, for whom color was the most important form of expression, was born in Holland in 1853.Brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere, Van Gogh was highly emotional and lacked self-confidence.Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, Van Gogh had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore and an art salesman. He remained in Belgium to study art, determined to give happiness by creating beauty. One of his famous paintings is The Potato Eaters (1885).
In 1886, he went to Paris to join his brother Théo.In Paris, Van Gogh studied with Cormon, later met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette(调色板).His nervous temperament made him a difficult companion and night-long discussions combined with painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help found a school of art.Gauguin did join him but with bad results. Near the end of 1888, an incident led Gauguin to finally leave Arles.Van Gogh ran after him with an open razor, was stopped by Gauguin, but ended up cutting a part of his own ear off.Van Gogh then was sent to a mental (精神的) hospital for treatment.
In May of 1890, he seemed much better and went to live in Auvers-sur-Oise under the watchful eye of Dr Cachet. Two months later he was dead, having shot himself “for the good of all”.During his brief career he had sold one painting.Van Gogh's finest works were produced in less than three years. His great fusion (融合) of form and content is powerful, dramatic and emotional, for the artist was completely absorbed in the effort to explain either his struggle against madness or his comprehension of the spiritual essence (精华) of man and nature.

Famous art museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art have one of the largest collections of art under one roof. Located in New York City's Museum Mile area, it has over two million works of art within its permanent collection, which is divided into 19 sections of interest.
The Met's American paintings section also has one of their earliest sculptures from 1870 on display. Their art section features paintings by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Van Gogh amongst its 11,000 paintings on hand.

There is also a research center that was opened in 1985, where staff researches information about the artifacts that exist and makes sure that the information being presented can be used in publications and workshops for presentation purposes.
The Musee du Louvre in Paris, France is one of the oldest, famous and most visited museums in the world, known as a place where artists were allowed to showcase their art since the early days in the 1700s. The museum was formally opened in 1750, and much of France's much neglected artists were allowed to present their works in this museum. They have owned collections of famous artists like Rembrandt and Da Vinci for years and have them up on display to the public. Visitors can view some of the favorite famous pieces, like the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, which has called the Louvre home for centuries.

Technology is changing the way that many students are learning in school. It's also changing the way that information about students is collected and stored.
Schools have always kept track of information about students such as test scores, number of absences, behavior, and school-wide graduation rates. But new technology is making it easier for schools to collect more detailed data (数据) about students. Schools around the country are making use of digital tools such as homework sites and apps that track student progress in subjects. Schools can also monitor and track how students behave in class. Much of this data is collected and stored by the technology companies that create the programs, and not by the schools themselves.
Supporters of these digital programs say that they enable teachers and schools to identify areas in which students need help and that the programs make it easier for teachers to plan lessons more easily.
But some parents and educators are concerned that the programs may not protect students' privacy (隐私). They worry that information about their children is being collected and stored without their knowledge, and could possibly be sold to other companies. “Schools are handing out student data to outside vendors (销售商) without parents knowing about it,” Leonie Haimson, co-chairwoman of a group called the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy, told TFK. “We don't know what vendors are going to do with this data and how long they are going to store it for, and that's a concern.”
At TFK, we promise to protect students' privacy, which is why the TIME FOR KIDS Classroom App does not collect personal information on students. Teachers control student information and assign student IDs and classroom passwords. All the information is cleared at the end of the school year.
The government is taking steps to protect students' privacy. Many states, including New York and Virginia, now have laws that limit the sharing of student data with companies. President Barack Obama recently announced new student digital-privacy legislation (立法), which prohibits companies that work with schools from using student information for marketing or advertising purposes.
What do you think? Should tech companies be able to store data on students?
32.How does Leonie Haimson feel about the digital programs?
A.She is used to them.
B.She is worried about them.
C.She looks forward to them.
D.She doesn't care about them.

33.At the end of the school year, the information TFK has stored on students will ________.
A.be sold to technology companies
B.be used for marketing purposes
C.be removed from its app
D.be sent to teachers

(Text 1)
M: Hey, Joanne. What's up? Are you heading to the beach, too?
W: I'm trying to get there as fast as I can. I need to deposit some money at the bank and mail some letters at the post office. But first, I've really got to find a ladies' room!
(Text 2)
W: Have you looked in the mirror today?
M: Uh, not since I woke up this morning ... Why? Did I forget to do my hair or something?
W: Well, let's just say that green ties and pink shirts don't really mix ...
(Text 3)
M: I'm starving! What have you got to eat around here?
W: Um, not much. I really wasn't expecting anyone over, so ...
M: All you have in here is some salad and one of those health drinks that only girls drink ...
W: Look. I don't show up at your door without calling and criticize your food, do I?
(Text 4)
W: Do you have any idea what time it is now? Have you ever heard your phone?
M: I'm sorry. But my phone ran out of power. I got back here as fast as I could because I knew you'd be worried.
(Text 5)
W: Hi, James! It's me, Diane. Oh, I'm so glad I caught you. I was just talking to Drake, and ...
M: I'm sorry. But I think you dialed the wrong number. My name is Daniel.
(Text 6)
M: What's the matter with you? You look miserable.
W: It's us.
M: What do you mean “us”?
W: Well, we used to talk to each other before we were married. Remember?
M: What do you mean? We're talking now, aren't we?
W: Oh, yes, but we used to do so much together.
M: We still go to the cinema together, don't we?
W: Yes, but we used to go out for walks together. Remember?
M: Oh, I can remember.
W: And we used to do silly things, like running barefoot through the park.
M: Yes. I remember. I used to catch terrible colds.
W: But we never used to argue. You used to think I was wonderful. Once ... Where are you going?
M: Back to live with my parents. That's something else we used to do before we were married. Remember?
(Text 7)
M: Can you see how close we are on the map?
W: It looks like we're pretty close, but these smartphone maps are hard to read.
M: Yeah, I always prefer to look at a paper map. I think I still have some in the pocket of the right door, if you wanna grab one ...
W: No, I'd probably be even worse at that. Uh-oh, I think you were supposed to turn left back there.
M: You mean that you were supposed to tell me to turn left back there?
W: Yeah, I'm sorry. I don't have one of these kinds of phones, so I'm afraid I don't really know what I'm doing. Do you want to pull over and take a look?
M:No. It's okay. Just push that little button on the side of the phone to turn on the sound. That will allow us to hear the directions out loud.
(Text 8)
M: Hello, Student Job Center. Can I help you?
W: Yes, I am looking for a part-time job. Do you have anything available at the moment?
M: Ah, yes. Your name and address?

M: OK, do you have any skills? Typing, languages, that sort of thing?
W: Yes, I speak Chinese and I can also speak some Japanese.
M: Right, let's see what is available. There is a position for an Office Assistant at the language center.
W: That sounds interesting.
M: It's for three days a week and the duty is to deal with inquiries and answer the phone.
W: I am sure I can handle it without problem.
M:Great. I will inform the director of the language center and you can start next week.
(Text 9)
W: Brett, can I ask you a question about your dog?
M: Sure. What's up?
W: Well, I have to get my little Ferguson some medicine.
M: Oh, is everything all right?
W: Yes, of course. It's not like he's sick or anything. I give him medicine every month as part of his regular care, so he doesn't get any diseases from insects or other dogs.
M: Oh, right. I do that for Fargo, too.
W: Yeah. That was what I was going to ask you about. Where do you buy your dog's medicine? I asked my vet, and she told me the prices. I almost dropped dead right there!
M: Yeah. Unfortunately, most special pet stores sell them at fixed prices that are set by the companies that make them. You can usually find discounts of ten or fifteen percent for a lot of those stores, though.
W: Well, that's not a huge help for something that's two hundred dollars per year! Isn't there any other way?
M: Well, you can order some medicines from websites that are based in other countries where the prices are lower.
(Text 10)
This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected. Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood by six o'clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to leave this area immediately.
Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car, but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o'clock today. You have plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as possible.
第二部分 阅读理解 (满分40分,限时35分钟)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Scope:Recently your school board proposed (提议) moving the school start time from 7:50 a.m. to 7:20 a.m. What was your reaction to this?
Jilly Dos Santos:I was getting only four to six hours of sleep a night and I was late for school a lot. With the new start time, I'd have to wake up even earlier. After we heard about the proposal, a teacher said to my class, “If you don't like it, why don't you do something about it?”
Scope:What did you do?
Jilly:I organized a group of students to speak to the school board.
Scope:What did you do to prepare for the meeting?
Jilly:I wanted to focus our presentation on why having an earlier start time was unhealthy. There is scientific research about teens and sleep. I learned that during your teen years, because of a change in hormones (激素), your body clock begins to change. You start to want to go to bed later. School starts the same time it always has, so getting enough sleep becomes difficult. I realized there wasn't something wrong with my time management or me; the way I was feeling had a physical and biological basis.
Scope:How did it go?
Jilly:About 30 students came to support me, and the board liked that I didn't get emotional and just provided the evidence. Two months later, an 8:55 a.m. start time became official: The board decided to make the start time later instead of earlier.
Scope:What has changed since the later start time?
Jilly:I don't need to stay up an extra hour or two at night, because I can get work done in the morning. I've also been late a lot less. And this year, there are more morning clubs and more people going to them.
21.Jilly's teacher seemed to encourage the students________.
A.to talk with the school board
B.to get their work done in time
C.to voice their opinions bravely
D.to take action to support the proposal
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据下文Jilly举行会议说服教育委员会更改提议可知,这位老师是鼓励学生们在面对不喜欢的事情时要勇敢地表达自己的观点。
22.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A.Jilly's body clock.
B.The scientific research.
C.The meeting Jilly organized.
D.Jilly's secret for time management.
解析:选C 代词指代题。根据上文的“speak to the school board, prepare for the meeting”和下文的“30 students came to support me, and the board liked ...”可知,此处的it指上文Jilly组织的会议。
23.How did Jilly succeed in persuading the school board?
A.By showing scientific evidence.
B.By putting forward a new proposal.
C.By telling different students' stories.
D.By presenting her personal experience.
解析:选A 细节理解题。根据Jilly说的“There is scientific research about teens and sleep.”和“the board liked that I didn't get emotional and just provided the evidence”可知,Jilly通过提供科学证据成功说服教育委员会取消将上课时间提前的决议。

Robert Munsch is an American born Canadian author of children's books. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1945. After graduation, Munsch at first wanted to become a priest (牧师) but then he changed his career path towards writing stories for children. He started off with working at day care centers. In 1975 he decided to move back to Canada. There he worked in the preschool at the University of Guelph in Ontario. He also lectured and then became an assistant professor there in the Department of Family Studies.
Robert Munsch is all about storytelling and that is something he loves most. His illustrative (解说的) style of telling his story attracted the attention of his first audience in 1972. And that was the beginning of his storytelling career. According to Munsch, a perfect story takes 200 tellings in order to become perfect. He can spend days and years perfecting his tale before performing it in front of a larger audience. Robert then started putting his imaginative style on paper and thus became a famous author of children's books.
Munsch's characters are taken from real life; they're the children he meets while storytelling in different places. For example his story Ribbon Rescue was inspired by a girl who came to hear his story wearing a ribbon dress. Another story called Lighthouse was inspired by two children named Amanda and Jeremiah who he met in Pontiac, Michigan. His own children have also played some parts in his stories.
Munsch has written many books which have also been translated into various languages. His first books The Mud Puddle and The Dark were published in 1979. His most notable work is the book Love you Forever, which was published in 1986. This book became an international bestseller.
Robert Munsch is known for his overstated (夸张的) way of storytelling and use of different voices. He repeats a story many times to improve its quality. Some of his books have also been made into animated (动画的) series named A Bunch of Munsch.

C
Last year, the most-read children's books — at least in the UK — were almost all fantasy novels. But why is this the case? What exactly does fantasy offer to young readers?
What's important to point out here is that fantasy writing has come to be considered as belonging to popular culture, and is therefore generally regarded as being of lower quality than realism (现实主义).
This idea was formed in me during childhood by my mother, who believed that fantasy was “rubbish”. (She was always trying to persuade my two brothers to let go off their dog-eared copies of American author David Eddings' books and read something “proper”.)
I had also met some people who were against reading fantasy. While living in Finland, where I joined a book club, I was told at my first meeting that the club didn't read “genre” books — which meant that realism was “in”, but everything else — including fantasy — was “out”.
When it comes to the subject of children, discussions about which books are “better” for them often focus on the fantasy and realism debate, causing Professor John Stephens to write that: one of the more curious sides to the criticism (批评) of children's literature is the strong wish to separate fantasy and realism into competing types, and to state that children prefer one or the other, or “progress” from fantasy to realism or vice versa (反之亦然).
A quick survey of the big children's publishing trends (趋势) over the past ten years confirms that fantasy is as popular as ever in the children's book scene. From the 450 million copies of Harry Potter books sold over this period, to the more recent Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, it would seem that children are as enthusiastic about fantasy as ever before — and rather than “progressing” out of fantasy, the popularity of fantasy in the young adult market would suggest just the opposite.
28.What was the author's mother's attitude towards fantasy?
A.Uncaring. B.Cautious.
C.Unfavorable. D.Enthusiastic.
解析:选C 观点态度题。由第三段中的描述可知,作者的母亲认为奇幻文学是“垃圾”,故不喜欢奇幻文学。
29.The book club the author joined in Finland ________.
A.didn't have a realistic aim
B.was always full of people in and out
C.had a tense atmosphere in most cases
D.was not acceptive of various literature styles
解析:选D 推理判断题。由第四段中的“the club didn't read ‘genre’ books — which meant that realism was ‘in’, but everything else — including fantasy — was ‘out’”可知,这个读书俱乐部不接纳多样的文学流派。
30.According to Professor John Stephens, the critics of children's literature ________.
A.want to separate children into different groups
B.want to divide fantasy and realism into separate groups
C.aim to get children to progress from fantasy to realism
D.wish to explore the difference between fantasy and realism
解析:选B 细节理解题。由第五段中的“one of the more curious sides to the criticism (批评) of children's ... into competing types”可知,儿童文学批评家想把奇幻文学与现实文学分化成对立的流派。
31.Harry Potter and Twilight series are mentioned in the last paragraph to show that ________.
A.fantasy is still popular among children
B.both books are the bestsellers of the time
C.young readers are moving away from fantasy
D.the young adult market is lively and competitive
解析:选A 推理判断题。由最后一段的“fantasy is as popular as ever in the children's book scene”和“children are as enthusiastic about fantasy as ever before”可知,奇幻文学像以前一样深受孩子们喜欢。
D
When I think about what I want for my children as they grow up, I think of the kind of people I'd like them to become: Adults who are kind, thoughtful and grateful, who laugh often and find excitement in life. I hope they surround themselves with whatever brings them joy.
Mike Ferry, a long-time middle school teacher, says contrary to what many believe, success does not always bring happiness; but research has shown that the opposite is true — happier people are more likely to be successful in life. When we are in a positive state of mind, our brains become more creative, energetic, and effective at work.
It turns out we can teach our children how to be happy by encouraging certain habits.
The first is gratitude. Teaching children to be grateful can seem like a daunting task. It is easy to get stuck in the consumer mentality (消费者心态) of society; children get used to the idea that more is better. But the way of saying “no” to children in order to develop a grateful attitude cannot be used too much. We should help them focus on being grateful for what they already have rather than on what they want next.
Kindness is another skill we can teach our children to help them find greater happiness. We can encourage kindness in children by modeling it within our homes. Be kind, especially during disagreements, and praise even small acts of kindness. Teach tolerance, highlight opportunities to give back to your community and volunteer as a family if possible.
Happiness is not something that falls out of the sky and into our children's laps. It is a wonderfully complex state of mind that can be improved with practice. And I'm willing to bet that we all want our children to experience happiness and joy in life.
32.What does the author value most from her children?
A.Whether they are happy.
B.How successful they are.
C.When they will feel grateful.
D.Where they show their kindness.
解析:选A 推理判断题。由第一段“I hope they surround themselves with whatever brings them joy.”和最后一段“And I'm willing to bet that we all want our children to experience happiness and joy in life.”可知,作者最重视孩子是否快乐的问题。
33.In the eyes of Mike Ferry, ________.
A.success means happiness
B.success is of no importance
C.happiness equals creativity
D.happiness helps bring about success
解析:选D 细节理解题。由第二段“... happier people are more likely to be successful in life.”可知,快乐的人更有可能获得成功。
34.The underlined word “daunting” in Paragraph 4 is the closest in meaning to “________”.
A.immediate B.discouraging
C.fundamental D.impossible
35.What is the best way to teach kids to be kind to others?
A.Avoiding disagreements.
B.Praising kids for anything.
C.Organizing family get-togethers.
D.Setting a good example in person.
解析:选D 细节理解题。由第五段“We can encourage kindness in children by modeling it within our homes.”可知,作者认为最好的方法是在家里做好榜样。

How to grow houseplants
Have you ever killed a beautiful houseplant? Are you still killing beautiful houseplants? __36__ Well, look no further, just follow these step-by-step instructions and your plant killing days will be over.
First of all, buy an easy-to-grow plant that can survive you. If you need a desert cactus (仙人掌) for a starter plant, then that's fine. __37__
Next, make sure your plant gets enough sunlight. __38__ The window will act as a prism (棱镜) and fry your plant. What you want to do is have a window with a light curtain. It should be transparent (透明的). In that way your plant gets its needed sunlight but it won't be destroyed.
__39__ If you give it the amount of water for a different plant, you could over-water or under-water it. If you know that everything needs water to survive, that's great, but you must also know that if you give something too much water you will kill it. Same thing goes for plants.
Finally, you will want to prune (修剪) your plant weekly. If you don't, then the plant might become unhealthy or unattractive, and sometimes even both. You could use tools or your hands. __40__ This makes for a great fertilizer, too, and then you won't have to buy fertilizer at the store!
A.Not everyone has a gift for growing plants.
B.However, never place it next to a glass window.
C.Are you looking for a way to solve your problem?
D.Water your plant as instructed for that specific plant.
E.Does it prefer bright light and ordinary room temperatures?

阅读下面来自Don't give up的诗歌节选,用英语写一篇读后感。
Don't give up
by Phoebe Gary
If you've tried and have not won,
Never stop for trying;
All that's good and great is done
Just by patient trying.
...
If by easy work you beat,
Who the more will prize you?
Gaining victory from defeat,
That's the test that tries you.
注意:1.词数100左右;
2.要主题明确,语言通顺、连贯。
参考范文:
Having read the inspiring poem Don't give up written by Phoebe Gary, I have had a better understanding of failure.
I like “Gaining victory from defeat” very much in the poem. There is no doubt that everyone can meet with failure. What it matters is the attitude towards failure. As the old saying goes, “Failure is the mother of success.” We can learn from failure which helps us understand our weak points.
Therefore, we shouldn't be afraid of failure. We should regard failure as a road leading to success. What's more, we should never give up no matter what happens to us.

(Text 9)
Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.
Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photo-taking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time.
When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?”
One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”
(Text 10)
If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a month's holiday anywhere in the world, I would feel very surprised and very excited. I think I would decide to fly around the world and to visit three different countries. The countries I would visit would be Australia, the United States of America and Kenya. If I went to Australia, I would stay there for about two weeks. Before I went, I would write to one of my Australian friends. I would suggest that if it were possible, he should spend a week with me visiting Aboriginal tribes in the northern part of Australia. My friend could explain what we saw and he could translate what people said because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queensland University. If I went to the United States, I would stay there for about a week. I expect I would start by visiting New York. I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. After I had stayed for two or three days in New York, I would fly to San Francisco. I hope I could stay with my friends who live there and I would visit the city and other parts of California. Finally, I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. First, I hope I could visit the coast. Next, I would like to visit a game reserve. I imagine the wild animals of Africa — the lion, elephant and hippopotamus — are very exciting and beautiful. Finally, I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya where you can see snow on the Equator. If someone offered me this money, I would be amazed. Unfortunately, I do not think this will ever happen and I doubt if I shall ever visit these countries.

As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, a potter with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal (肠的) disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time, Al became an alcoholic.
As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed — his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al's death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”
As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment. I knew Al's now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, and most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and love had to come from somewhere.
I hadn't heard Ernie talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘Love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and left behind his best love.

解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第五段中的“I worked up my courage ... such a special person.”和“Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘Love you, son.’”可推知,正是父亲的爱才使他成为现在的样子,故选B项。

We all know that exercise is good for your health, but some kinds of exercise may be better than others.
Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running also may help you live longer. Researchers say it is not important how far you run. It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run. As advertisements for the running shoe Nike say, “Just do it.”
Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About one-fourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were considerably less likely than non-runners to die of any form of disease, including heart disease. In fact, the runners usually lived three years longer than the non-runners.
This study lasted 15 years. During that time, more than 3,400 of the individuals died. About 1,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke. Compared to non-runners, runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes. Also, runners compared to non-runners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
The runners in the study ran between 10 and 16 kilometers per hour. Slower runners, and those who only ran once or twice a week, were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further. Researchers looked at the running over time and found that persistent runners — over six years — showed the biggest benefits.
To stay healthy, doctors suggest that adults up to age 65 do 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) exercise every week. They say these individuals need 75 minutes of energetic exercise, like running, every week for good health.

C.make it an everyday activity
D.do it for a certain distance at a time
解析:选B 细节理解题。由第二段可知,跑步的距离、速度、频率都不重要,重要的是要去跑。
29.What have the researchers discovered?
A.How fast and how often one runs matter a lot.
B.Over one-third of non-runners will die of heart disease.

What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common? That's the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to fun_ction efficiently.
The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should “spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. A strong body makes the mind strong.”
It turns out Jefferson_was_on_to_something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn't exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity.
But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight — like walking or running — may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (骨质疏松) later in life.
You'll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations.

参考范文:
Dear Jack,
I learned that you often stay up very late studying these days. I'm writing to persuade you to give up the bad habit.
Staying up late at night is harmful to your health. It may cause headaches and even make you ill. What's more, you may find it difficult to concentrate on your studies at school. As a result, you'll soon fall behind with your school work.
Therefore, you should make a good daily work plan. Finish your daily work on time and don't leave it until night. After all, it's most important to keep healthy, isn't it?
I hope you'll consider my suggestions.
Yours,
Li Hua

(Text 1)
M:Any new ideas on the Mr. Fro case? How can we give this motor oil a new brand identity?
W:Let me get my morning coffee to get my brain working again.
(Text 2)
W:Hi, excuse me, sir? I'm looking for a dress shoe. My usual pair that I've had for years have finally been stretched out of shape. They don't provide any support anymore.
M:Sure, we've got sandals, heels and something a little more practical.
(Text 3)
M:Excuse me, but what time will we arrive in Xi'an?
W:We'll arrive there at 11:15.
M:That's good. My friend is supposed to meet me at the airport then.
(Text 4)
W:I really enjoy that piece you just played on the piano. I bet you get a lot of requests for it.
M:You said it. People just can't get enough of it.
(Text 5)
M:Alice, your father is amazing. He's 90 years old and he lives alone in that big house.
W:I know. He doesn't like to ask anyone for help. My dad insists on paying his own bills and taking care of himself!
(Text 6)
W:When I got home last night I found a letter from the school I used to study in. The students there want me to go back and talk to them.
M:Oh, really? And are you going?
W:I don't know. I used to hate school, so I don't feel like going back.
M:But it's different now.
W:Yes, I know. But it's still a difficult situation. You see, when I was at school I used to be bad at studies and none of the teachers liked me.
M:Well, I think you should go. When I was younger, I used to dream about meeting a famous pop star. You can't let them down.
W:Maybe you are right. OK. I'll go.
(Text 7)
W:Hi, Tommy, got a minute?
M:Sure, come in. What's on your mind?
W:Oh, it's the plan for the students about the use of computers.
M:What's the trouble?
W:The students are supposed to use the computers for only one hour a day because so many students need to use them every day.
M:I can see that.
W:Well, now it seems that some of the students aren't willing to give up their machines when the hour is over.
M:I suppose they feel that it doesn't matter very much to keep them a few minutes more.
W:Yes, but this makes it hard for those who are waiting to use the machines.
M:You are right. Let's prepare a notice right now. Then we can pass it out tomorrow to clear up the problem.
(Text 8)
W:Hello! I'm home! Tom?
M:Hi, Mum! I'm in here.
W:Oh, my God! What's going on here?
M:I'll clear it up later. I've nearly finished. What do you think?
W:It's so lovely. I like the roof. What a beautiful red!
M:I haven't painted the front door yet. What color do you think it should be?
W:I think green would be nice ... or yellow ... or perhaps blue ... Oh, I don't know. Would you like me to make some curtains for it?
M:Oh, that would be great, Mum. Oh ... by the way ... I'm afraid I've got a bit of paint on the carpet over there. I'm terribly sorry.
W:Oh, you haven't, Tom!
M:It's all right. I think it will come out. If not, I'll just paint the rest of the carpet the same color.
(Text 9)
W:Yes, Sir. You called?
M:Yes, I wonder if you could bring me another bottle of beer.
W:Certainly. Would you like anything else?
M:Well, my grandson is supposed to meet me in London at the airport. Do you think he'll be able to find me?
W:I'm sure he will. You don't have to worry about that. Are you going to be visiting him?
M:Yes. I've never seen my grandson.
W:I think you'll have a wonderful time in London. It's beautiful, is this your first time abroad?
M:No, I saw quite a bit of Europe before, Rome, Berlin, Paris, places like that, but I've never been to London.
W:Oh, then you have flown before too.
M:No, that was during the Second World War and I went to Europe on a large ship carrying soldiers.
W:Things are quite different in Europe nowadays.
M:I'm sure they are. I'm really interested to get there.
W:Well, it's 4 o'clock now and we'll be there at 6:00. Will you be staying long?
M:I plan to stay five weeks. I was a teacher but I have stopped working. My wife has been dead and so I can go wherever I want.
W:I think you'll have a good time. I'll go and get a beer for you.
(Text 10)
M:Now, where am I staying in Barcelona?
W:I've booked you out in the Sky Palace, just at the airport terminal.
M:Sky Palace? Wasn't it possible to get me into Barcelona Hotel as usual?
W:Well, Barcelona Hotel would have involved much more traveling for you. The company you're visiting is located near the airport.
M:Oh, I see. Yes, fine. Have you got the hotel's phone number?
W:Oh, no, but I'll get it for you from the travel agency. And at the next stop, you've been booked into the Larval Hotel in Brussels.
M:The Larval? I've already stayed there twice and found it rather depressing. Is it possible to change the hotel?
W:Of course. I will do my best. Oh, the last stop, London.
M:OK. When everything is settled, I will ask my wife to meet me at the Heathrow Airport. Is there anything else?
W:If possible, I will ask them to send the tickets up before we close today. That's all in order now.
第二部分 阅读理解 (满分40分,限时35分钟)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A young lady shared a story. While trying out for a stage play, she got the starring role while her girlfriends were not even picked for the supporting parts. On the opening night she said she was really excited but afterwards became very disappointed when her girlfriends never came out and supported her. She explained the situation to an elderly friend named Hap. He wrote her a letter.
Dear Ann,
There was a comic strip (连环漫画) called “L'll Abner”. It had some characters that lived in a town named Dogpatch. They were “the boys down at the stable”, because that's where they spent most of their time setting the social standards of the town. They would laugh and point their fingers at anyone who tried to be better. As a result, the people feared so much that they stopped trying. Soon the town died.
In every social structure, there are “the boys down at the stable”. They are the jealous (嫉妒的) ones. They are too scared to try something different. They show their ignorance by laughing at those who do. Learn to recognize them, Ann, for what they are. Don't let them hurt you. It takes a certain amount of hardship to succeed.
There are too many of us who love you and want you to make it. You are going to do a superb job. Remember that this show is only a small step in the direction of greater things you will do. All you have to do is go on. One of the things I like about you best is that you always give something a try.
The show will be a success because of you and others who try. The losers are gathered down at the stable laughing and hoping for your failure, but their guilt must make them very unhappy people.
Much love,
Hap

There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is really worldwide.
On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in distant areas away from any industrial cities. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect” — keeping heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen. Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people ignore the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?
24.People used to think that air pollution ________.
A.caused widespread damage in the countryside
B.affected the entire eastern half of the United States
C.had a very bad effect on health
D.existed merely in urban and industrial areas

26.The underlined word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by “________”.
A.counter-act B.break from
C.get along D.communicate
27.If the world's temperature lowered just a few degrees ________.
A.it would not do much harm to life on earth
B.it would lead major farming areas to disaster
C.particular things would increase greatly in the atmosphere
D.seas and oceans would flood many cities

Earlier this year, my family experienced an unexpected tragedy. The kind of tragedy which knocks you out of yourself and turns your whole world upside down. A tragedy which also caused me to be out of work for three months. It was completely unforeseen and I had no time to put together an out of office plan.
I've worked at previous companies where this kind of tragedy would have been handled professionally; I would have been given the legally-required money and asked to leave. But at SAS Institute (an American developer of analytics software), my team stepped in and filled in with no questions or hesitations. My work was not left undone. My clients (客户) were patient when those picking up the pieces of projects unrelated to them needed some time to get familiar with the work. My management and colleagues checked on my family regularly. At last, my manager, my entire team and Human Resources Department helped me back to work at my own pace. They even changed my workspace over a weekend to better suit my personal needs before I even came back to work.
You see, SAS_creates_a_family. The special attention to employee happiness and work/life balance makes that family possible. The flexible work environment enables most employees to create a schedule that best suits their personal needs — whether it's attending a school play or taking an aging parent to the doctor. The Work/Life Office has a wealth of resources for college planning, anger management, sorrow, etc. But, as you can see, it doesn't stop there. Most employees believe that SAS is their family. We rely on each other. We help each other succeed. We celebrate team successes. We hang out after work. Our kids play together. We laugh together and cry together.
Sure, we have a lot of convenience benefits at SAS. But, what really makes a difference to me is the SAS culture that the outside world doesn't always see: The balance. The companionship. The management support. The family it allows me to have.
I'm so eager for others to see the side of SAS that I see every day.
语篇解读:本文是记叙文。作者是一名SAS的员工,在他遇到困难时,公司的“家”文化让他受益匪浅。
28.After the tragedy, the author ________.

A.the employees feel at home at SAS
B.SAS often organizes family get-togethers

31.The author writes the text mainly to ________.
A.tell his life experience
B.introduce SAS culture
C.encourage people to join SAS
D.explain the importance of family

Carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) poisoning kills and injures many people and animals around the world. The gas has been a problem since people first began burning fuels to cook food or to create heat. It is a problem in all parts of the world that experiences cold weather.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color. It has no taste. It has no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. But it is very deadly. It robs the body of its ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide decreases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues. It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it.
Damage to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts of carbon monoxide. How quickly this happens depends on the length of time a person is breathing the gas and the amount of the gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs. But people have to be awake to recognize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person's head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. The person may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly. People develop severe head pain as the amount of gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomach pains.
Medical experts say carbon monoxide affects people differently. For example, a small child will experience health problems or die much quicker than an adult will. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important. An older adult with health problems may suffer the effects of carbon monoxide more quickly than a younger person with no health problems. People with heart disease may suffer chest pains. They may begin to have trouble breathing.

33.How does carbon monoxide harm people?
A.It makes people's blood unable to move.
B.It decreases the amount of blood in the body.
C.It makes body tissues full of blood.
D.It makes the blood less able to carry oxygen.

38.选D 本段说明了周围环境对工作效率的影响。D项符合本段大意。

W:Tommy, Tom Brown, it has been a long time, hasn't it? It must be at least a year.
M:No, we talked at Johnson's birthday party last September. Don't you remember?
W:That's right. Well, how are you? Still working for Jones at the French company?
M:No. I changed jobs about three months ago. I'm a member of the National Bank now. How about you?
W:I'm still teaching at the university. But I changed from the German department to the Spanish department.
M:Don't tell me you speak Spanish, too.

(Text 9)
W:Officer, officer, I have something important to report. I have just had my money stolen!

W:Yes, you are completely right. Where should I start?
M:At the beginning. When did it take place?
W:About ten minutes ago.
M:And where exactly was this?
W:It was probably on the moving stair coming up from the underground at Xi'an. I think somebody had been following me from the time I left the bank.
M:The bank?
W:Well, you see, I went to a bank to exchange some traveler's cheques for money, so I can buy my airline ticket back home.
M:Yes, yes. How much did you exchange?
W:About 4,500 dollars worth.
M:And how much was stolen?

Children's education is changing very rapidly today. In the past, teachers made children sit still for hours. They made them memorize all sorts of things. In other words, the children had to go on repeating things until they knew them by heart. Today, many teachers wonder if it is possible to make children learn at all. They say you must let children learn and discover things by themselves.
But for some children, school is a kind of prison. They are there only because their parents make them go.They get out of the classroom as soon as the teacher lets them leave. Many of them want to find jobs but the law will not allow them to work until they reach a certain age.And so,they have to stay in school.Often they do not learn anything at all and hate every moment.

The holidays are about family and many other things depending on what your family believes. They are also about turkey, ham, pumpkin pies, apple pies and so much more. So, how do you keep from eating too much and gaining too much weight during the holidays?
Make a plan for what you'll eat.
While there is absolutely no reason to try to lose weight during the holidays, it is possible to attempt not to gain any excess weight during the holidays. The key is to map your eating schedule out. Don't overeat, but still enjoy the holidays. If you know you will be eating at two different places within a few hours, eat small amounts at both.
You can still enjoy all of your favorite holiday foods, simply cut back on your serving sizes so that you can enjoy them all. There are a ton of tasty foods to eat, but that doesn't mean you can't cut back on how many pumpkin pies you eat!
Do things to beat stress.
The holidays can be stressful. Stress can release cortisol (皮质醇) in your body, which is one of those things that add to weight gain. That is why it is important to do things that help you beat stress during the holiday season. Take up yoga or just take some time out of every day to relax.
Don't let the holidays interrupt your workout.
Another great way to beat stress is to keep up your fitness routine during the holidays. Sure, the holidays are a busy time, but you just need to get creative about them.
When you're doing your Christmas shopping power walk (暴走) through the malls and department stores, you'll get some good cardio (有氧运动) and you'll raise your heart rate, which means your brain will be triggered to release some endorphins, which are happy hormones and help lift your mood.

An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up.Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake.Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged.Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you.Never use the elevator to go down.Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out.Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place.Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.

“Come on, Izz. You can do it. Move those arms. Kick.” My 7-year-old daughter was doing laps, and I wanted her to keep up with the other swimmers. She couldn't.
Neither could she hear my frustration, because the swimming club would not allow parents on the deck (甲板). Parents waited in a glass balcony overlooking the pool.
When she came up to greet me, ready to be hugged, I lit into her. “Why didn't you try to finish the lap? How hard could it have been?”
My daughter drew away from me. “You can't even swim,” she said.
She was right. I couldn't swim.
Her words stayed with me. I asked myself: What does it take to learn something new? Did it help when someone criticized me?
I was pushing my daughter to do something I had never tried.
Before next week's lesson arrived, I attended a swimming class for adults. When my daughter went to do laps, I went to the smaller pool at the other end of the club.
Each week, Isabelle and I came up from our separate pools tired but happy. We shared what we had done, hugged, and went out for a treat.
At the end of the eight-week course, I proudly showed her my first swimming badge (徽章). “You can do laps with me now,” said my daughter.
No, not yet. I had made it across the pool, but couldn't finish its length. My_arms_had_felt_like_lead,_and_my_legs_like_rubber.
More important than the swimming badge, though, I had earned a “parenting badge”. I had rediscovered the thrill and frustration of trying something new. My child was doing this every day — at the pool, at school, at home. Now, so was her mom.

Earthquake rescue robots have experienced their final tests in Beijing. Their designers say with these robots, rescuers will be able to buy more time to save lives during an earthquake.
This robot, looking like a helicopter, is called the detector (探测器) bot. At about 4 metres long, it took about 4 years to develop the model. Its main functions are to collect information from the air, and deliver goods of up to 30 kilos to people trapped by an earthquake.
This robot is equipped with a high 360-degree panoramic (全景的) camera. It can work day and night and also be able to send the latest pictures from the quake area.
Dr Qi Juntong, from Chinese Academy of Sciences, said, “The most important feature of this robot is that it doesn't need distant control. We just set the information on it, and then it takes off, and lands by itself. It flies as high as 3,000 metres, and as fast as 100 kilometres per hour.”
This robot has a different fun_ction — it can change as the environment changes. Its main job is to search for any signs of life in places where human rescuers can't go.
The robot is equipped with a camera that can work in the dark, as well as a detector that not only finds people, but can also detect poisonous gas.
Another use for the rescuers is the supply bot, with its 10-metre-long pipe. People trapped in the ruins will be able to get supplies including oxygen and liquids.
Experts have said that the robots will be produced, and serve as part of the national earthquake rescue team as soon as next year.
