第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

My first impression of Miss Vicki was a highly authoritative (权威的) person towering over me. She spoke in a loud voice and the earth shook whenever she marched. That was in the first year of high school. She was a knowledgeable literature teacher then. However, during my first year in school, she struck terror into my heart (使我胆战心惊). And everyone else's of course. Just the mention of her name made the most unruly classes silent.
Nevertheless, the two years of junior high passed by rather quickly. Soon, I went to senior high class. I had worked hard and gotten the subject combination that I wished for. Together with a group of old friends, I soon settled down in class comfortably.
To everyone's surprise, she was fortunate enough to be my teacher that year. I was shocked when I heard the news. This time round, however, I decided not to hide in terror whenever she was near. I decided to face the fact that we were going to meet each other for the next 365 days. Instead of trying too hard to lick her boots, I tried my best to be my natural self in front of her.
Still, I could not shake off the ice-cold impression that she put in my heart. True, her jokes sometimes sent me into fits of laughter, yet at other times these jokes simply fell flat the moment she told them. My lovely class, however, was always ready to laugh at the right time of her amusing stories. After all, we would not want to run the risk of provoking (激怒) her.
Unluckily, life was not to remain boring. One day we received news that Miss Vicki was to leave Singapore for the Philippines where she would take part in a voluntary teaching program for the poor. We did not know what to say actually. All of us cried at the airport.

From self-driving cars to carebots for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence (人工智能) continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution (革命) in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates.
But the report states: “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs — just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
“The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report's co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft's Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
28. We can infer from the text that in the future _____.
A. people will face many difficulties
B. people will take up more creative jobs
C. artificial intelligence will threaten people's lives
D. most jobs will be done in traditional workplaces
29. According to the report, _____.
A. people won't necessarily lose jobs
B. big companies will face fewer challenges
C. small companies will win against big companies
D. most people will become interested in technology
30. What is the attitude of most experts in artificial intelligence and robotics to the future
A. Mixed. B. Worried.
C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
31. Jonathan Grudin's words in the last paragraph suggest that _____.
A. there will be enough jobs for people
B. things will change a lot in a few years
C. many people will become unemployed
D. technology will totally change future jobs
D
Swimming along a river in western Florida, a newborn manatee (海牛) calls out for her mother. But the baby hears no answer. The mother has disappeared, possibly frightened away by a passing motorboat. Longing for her mom's gentle touch, the confused (困惑的) manatee begins rubbing against the closest big thing she can find — a boat.
From his home beside the river, Richard Dash sees the manatee rubbing against the boat. He keeps watch on the animal, hoping the mother will appear. But after two hours, she's still alone. Dash calls the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for help. “A baby manatee needs its mother to show it where to find food,” says Andrew Garrett, a rescue coordinator (协调员) at the organization. “Without a mother's guidance, chances of survival are pretty much zero.”
A rescue team rushes to the scene to catch the newborn, and then takes off for the rehabilitation (康复) center at Lowry Park Zoo. After arriving at the center, the manatee is given a checkup by the workers. The doctor's exam shows that the manatee, now named Kee, is dangerously underweight. At less than 50 pounds, she's one of the smallest orphans (失去生母的幼小动物) ever treated at the zoo. The baby is placed in a pool where the workers give her 24-hour care. Gradually Kee puts on pounds and gains strength.
A few weeks later, an adult manatee recovering at the center from an accident has a baby. This gives animal care manager Virginia Edmonds an idea. She decides to introduce Kee to the new mom, named Della. Edmonds hopes that Della will raise Kee alongside her own baby, Pal. So the workers place the three manatees in the same pool. Within hours Della is nursing Kee with her milk. Soon Kee is getting all of her food from Della.

选做题
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Lou Gehrig was the classic case of playing in Babe Ruth's shadow. As the New York Yankees' first baseman from 1925 through 1939, there was no way he could escape the big man behind him in right field. However, this never seemed to trouble Gehrig. He was a shy, modest (谦逊的) person who was satisfied to leave the spotlight to Ruth.
Gehrig was born in New York City in 1903. After attending Columbia University, he joined the Yankees in 1925 and soon became one of baseball's excellent hitters. He is remembered by the public mainly as the Iron Horse who played in 2,130 consecutive (连续的) games between 1925 and 1939. His teammates, however, remember him more for his ability to drive in runs.
For thirteen consecutive seasons, he batted (击球) in over 100 runs, seven of those times over 150. In 1931, when he drove in 184 runs, he set an American League record.
Gehrig usually batted fourth in the Yankee batting order, right behind Babe Ruth. A reporter once mentioned to him that no matter what Gehrig did, he seemed to get almost no publicity.
Lou laughed and said, “I'm not a headline guy, and we might as well face it. When Babe's turn at bat is over, the fans are still talking about it when I come up. Nobody would notice me.”
On May 1, 1939, after playing in 2,130 consecutive games, Lou Gehrig took himself out of the Yankee lineup for the good of the team. He felt weak. Doctors discovered that he was suffering from an incurable (不能治愈的) rare illness, which destroyed the central nervous system. The gentle first baseman died two years later, a couple of weeks before his thirty-eighth birthday.
A widely praised 1942 movie about Lou Gehrig's life was named The Pride of the Yankees. The dictionary defines (定义) “pride” in this sense as “someone to be proud of ... the best in a group.” The movie could not have been better named.

Great white shark. Just hearing that name makes many people's hair stand on end. In reality, these big fish have more to fear from us than we do from them. For many years, people killed countless great white sharks in the waters around the United States.
But thanks to conservation (保护) efforts, great whites are making a comeback in the U.S. Two recent studies show that the population of these sharks is rising along the east and west coasts.
Why is the growing population of a killer fish something to celebrate “When you fish too many of them, you start to lose balance in the environment,” says shark researcher Tobey Curtis. As the biggest killers, sharks help keep the populations of fish, seals, and other creatures they eat from growing too large.
Despite their importance, great white sharks had long been hunted for their meat and their fins (鳍). Then, in 1997, the U.S. government passed a law that didn't allow the hunting of great whites. Afterwards, the numbers of these sharks in the U.S. waters started to increase.
The law wasn't the only thing that has helped great whites. Conservationists have also played a part in the sharks' comeback.
The research group OCEARCH is using a method called tagging to help change people's attitudes about great whites. How does it work An electronic device (设备) is attached to a shark's fin. Every time the shark's fin rises above the water, the tag sends a signal to a satellite. That information is then sent to scientists at OCEARCH, who share it with shark researchers worldwide.
Just as important, they let the public follow each shark as it travels the world's oceans. OCEARCH also gives each tagged shark a name to help people form a closer connection with the big fish.
The group's most well-known shark is named Katharine. She was tagged last year near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Since then, thousands of people have tracked Katharine's movements on Twitter and the OCEARCH website.
This helps people see sharks in a new way. Chris Fischer, the founder of OCEARCH, believes learning to appreciate great whites will encourage people to do more to protect them.
