A
A ten-year-old from Howell, Michigan is being praised as a hero thanks to his persistence (坚持) that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.
That's when the young boy noticed an open garage (车库) and a figure that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.
Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny's hunch (直觉). Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. The 80-year-old had fallen down on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.
Dawn rushed home to get her husband to help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets (毛毯) to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they waited for the ambulance (救护车) to arrive. Sunjit Patel is a designer with a well-known publishing company. He lives in South London, and for the last three years he has been working from home. He prefers working from home because he can spend more time with his family and have a better work-life balance. Sunjit isn't alone: in Britain, there are 2.1 million people who work from home at present. In addition, about eight million people spend some time working in the home rather than in an office. This is almost twice as many as ten years ago.
This rapidly-growing trend (趋势) towards working from home is the same in many countries. But what are the reasons for it The main reason is technological: easy access to broadband and the availability of phone and video-conferencing. These make it possible for people to use their home as an office in an efficient (高效的) and cost-effective way.
Other reasons for homeworking are the benefits (益处) to both employers and employees: office space is costly, so if an organisation can reduce its workstations, it may be able to move to a smaller site. Employees often work better at home: travelling to work can be a waste of time and tiring. Many homeworkers save a lot of time if they don't travel to work and they can start the day fresher and therefore work more efficiently; parents with young children appreciate the flexibility (灵活性) that homeworking allows and are more relaxed.
Sunjit Patel says, “I have been working from home since my son was born and have been really enjoying it. But I can tell you that homeworking requires special skills like self-discipline and time management. I've known my boss and workmates for a long time now, which really helps because you've got to trust each other. You also need to have regular communication, by phone, email or video conferences, and you need to make regular trips to your office. Otherwise you really miss out on the social side of work.”
Not everyone agrees with Sunjit though. “The only people who can work from home full-time are those who do an unnecessary job.” Fortunately for Sunjit and the 2.1 million like him, not many people think that way!
28.We can infer from Paragraph 1 that _____.
A. Sunjit Patel is a well-known designer
B. homeworking is generally on the increase
C. Sunjit Patel is homeschooling his son
D. most designers in London work from home
29.Paragraph 3 is mainly about _____.
A. the daily life of homeworkers
B. the advantages of homeworking
C. how employers increase efficiency
D. why employees dislike travelling to work
30.According to Sunjit Patel, people who want to work from home should _____.
A. show great self-control
B. improve their social life
C. have excellent communication skills
D. make frequent trips to their workplaces
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Most homeworkers do a pointless job.
B. Many people are against homeworking.
C. People's opinions on homeworking vary.
D. Homeworking influences many people's life.

Most people will recognise the man in this photograph. He is, of course, Bill Clinton, ex-president of the United States. Bill Clinton is a very popular speech giver and regularly gives talks all over the world, to many different audiences. He is so effective at giving talks because he has a special quality which we call“charisma (魅力)”.
Nowadays, psychologists (心理学家) are becoming very interested in charisma and want to describe its meaning in a better way. People often misunderstand what charisma is and think of it as a kind of fame (名望), but it is not the same as fame. Charisma is a kind of magic and is relatively rare. A well-known American psychologist thinks that charismatic people are basically excellent communicators. However, they have other qualities such as self-confidence, eloquence (口才) and vision.
Charismatic personalities are able to draw people to them, and people feel happy in their company. There is a sense of “togetherness” when a charismatic person is with other people. A good example of this ability, some say, is the famous American, Oprah Winfrey. She is a highly-successful businesswoman and is probably best known as the presenter of a very popular talk show. Oprah is able to relate to audiences at her shows and they respond (回应) well to her. Her charismatic personality has made her one of the richest women in the world. She owns several houses and publishes her own magazines. Presently, she is presenting a new series of the Oprah Winfrey Show. She also runs a book club, which influences the nation's reading habits and may be one of the reasons why people are reading more these days in the USA.
A woman who had extraordinary charisma was the film star, Marilyn Monroe. A beautiful woman and a talented actress, she was always the centre of attention wherever she went.
Unlike fame, charisma doesn't disappear over time. Even now, more than fifty years after her death, when young people see Monroe in her films, her charisma seems as fresh and powerful as ever.
32.Bill Clinton is good at giving talks because _____.
A. he has a quality called charisma
B. he was once president of the USA
C. he has many fans that support him
D. he is well-known all over the world
33.According to the text, charismatic people _____.
A. are all effective speech makers
B. are all confident and successful
C. can easily attract and interest people
D. often try to create a calm atmosphere
34.What do we know about Oprah Winfrey
A.She is most famous as a magazine publisher.
B.She has a happy relationship with her audiences.
C.She often gives talks to American young people.
D.She writes books to influence Americans' reading habits.
35.The author mentions the popularity of Marilyn Monroe to show that _____.
A. fame is as important as charisma
B. famous people always have charisma
C. charisma doesn't become weaker over time
D. Monroe is an extraordinarily talented actress

Isadora Duncan
In the early 1900s the dancer Isadora Duncan created a new form of dance. Duncan refused to accept the strict rules of ballet (芭蕾舞), which was the main form of dance at the time. 36
Duncan was born in San Francisco, California on either May 26, 1877, or May 27, 1878. She was one of four children raised by their mother, a poor music teacher. At first her name was Angela Duncan. 37
Duncan learned ballet as a child. However, ballet's movements did not please her. 38 Duncan performed in New York City and Chicago, Illinois, but she did not have much success. At age 21 she left for Europe.
Duncan's dancing interested European audiences. She danced to classical music, just as ballet dancers did. 39 She was the first Western dancer to perform without shoes on her feet and without tights (紧身衣). She wore a loose (宽松的) dress based on ancient Greek clothes.
Duncan finally opened dance schools in France, Germany, the United States, and the Soviet Union. She taught her students how to follow the natural movements and rhythms (节奏) of their bodies. 40
In 1922 Duncan married a poet from the Soviet Union. Many people in the United States feared the Soviets. Some said Duncan was not faithful (忠诚的) to the United States. She then left her home country for good. Duncan died in Nice, France, on September 14, 1927.
A. Duncan's ideas also influenced many modern dancers.
B. While in her teens she changed her first name to Isadora.
C. Duncan began her dancing career by teaching lessons in her home.
D. But Duncan made up many of her moves during each performance.
E. She spent most of the rest of her life in this manner, touring in Europe.
F. Instead, she created a free style of dancing, which is known as modern dance.
G. She soon began to invent a more natural way to express herself through dance.

Most people think about donating (捐献) blood. However, very few actually do it. According to experts, though almost 50% of the US population can be counted as potential (潜在的) blood donors, less than 10% ever give. What's worse is that even the most consistent ones donate an average of just three to four times during their lifetime. The situation is similar worldwide. Now officials in Sweden are trying to change the situation with the help of modern-day technology.
The encouragement to donate again begins shortly after the donor leaves the hospital when he or she receives a “thank you” text. Though that certainly helps them feel appreciated, what is even more satisfying is the text they receive each time their blood is used to help someone in need.
Karolina Blom Wiberg, the communications manager at the Stockholm blood service, believes that this small gesture not only results in repeat donors, but also helps bring in new ones. The creative program that was carried out in Stockholm three years ago has received such positive feedback (反馈) that it is now being rolled out across the country.
However, Swedish officials are not stopping there. They are also encouraging local hospitals to show the exact levels of the different blood groups they have in stock at any given time on their websites. This allows potential donors to realize that their blood can make a difference in saving someone's life.
While all these programs are great, busy people, even the ones with the best intentions have to be occasionally reminded. In order to jog their memories officials send them text, Facebook, and e-mail reminders. Though that may sound intrusive (打扰的), people do not seem to mind given that the messages are light-hearted and fun — things like “We won't give up until you give your blood.”
Though Sweden is now the only country using modern technology to encourage more donations, don't be surprised if more join in, especially if the Nordic country's blood banks start to overflow!
1. Why does the author give the example of the US
A. To call on readers to donate blood.
B. To show blood donors are in need.
C. To show the coldness of Americans.
D. To prove the importance of blood donation.
2. The program run in Stockholm seems to be _____.
A. simple
B. expensive
C. successful
D. discouraging
3. The information shown on the websites of local hospitals aims to _____.
A. help donors know if their blood is used
B. encourage more people to donate blood
C. get rid of the worries of potential donors
D. let donors know how much blood is in stock
4. According to Paragraph 5, busy people in Sweden _____.
A. can accept those fun messages
B. prefer text to e-mail reminders
C. find the messages rather boring
D. have no interest in the messages
5. What's the author's attitude towards Sweden's measures
A. Surprised.
B. Curious.
C. Doubtful.
D. Hopeful.

An unusually fruitful debate took place Tuesday in the Michigan Capitol, as middle school students tried hard to persuade lawmakers to choose the cherry as the official state fruit.
The movement began more than three years ago in Ann Arbor, where fourth grade government students at Bach Elementary School noticed that more than 30 other states have official fruits and decided it was time for further study.
Their research, which they first shared with state Senate (参议员) Rebekah Warren in 2010, led to a natural conclusion: The cherry should be chosen as the official state fruit of Michigan.
The students worked with Warren to introduce a bill, started a letter writing campaign and, on Tuesday, put out their statements before the Senate Government Operations Committee.
Michigan is the nation's number one producer of tart cherries, the Bach students noted, and is also a leader in sweet cherries. French explorers planted cherry trees when they first arrived in Detroit (in Southeastern Michigan); Traverse City is now known as the “cherry capital” and hosts a national festival each year.
Blueberries had their backers too. Students from St. Basil and Baseline middle schools in South Haven argued that the blueberry is big business in West Michigan and were behind a state fruit bill introduced by state Senate Tonya Schuitmaker.
Michigan has produced more than 490 million pounds of blueberries in a single year, or about 32 percent of all those eaten in the United States, they said. And blueberries appear to have a more direct historical connection to Michigan than the cherry.
“Blueberries are native to America and have been producing food for Michigan much longer than cherries,” said Baseline student John Ellis, who told lawmakers that his great grandparents invented the blueberry harvester. “Cherries are actually native to China.”
Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville walked students through the law-making process and treated it as the civics lesson it was. He said he would consider the statements.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, who is likely to avoid controversial (有争议的) political issues until they demand his attention, has not weighed in on the official fruit debate.
6. What is special about the debate
A. It led to an important conclusion.
B. Lawmakers had a heated argument.
C. Students were actively involved in it.
D. It took place in Bach Elementary School.
7. What do we learn about Michigan
A. It produces the sweetest cherries in the US.
B. It is the world's biggest tart cherry producer.
C. It holds a yearly international blueberry festival.
D. It provides about one third of America's blueberries.
8. Who was in support of choosing the blueberry as the official state fruit
A. Rebekah Warren.
B. Tonya Schuitmaker.
C. Randy Richardville.
D. Rick Snyder.
9. Ellis would probably agree _____.
A. native Americans first planted the blueberry
B. the blueberry harvester was invented in China
C. blueberries played a greater role than cherries in the US
D. lawmakers should encourage people to grow more cherries
10. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Cherries or blueberries
B. Students or lawmakers
C. French or Chinese
D. Research or law

One possible version:
Dear Mr. Dolphin,
I have learned from the local newspaper that you want a tutor to give two eight-year children Chinese lessons at home. I'd like to apply for the job.
I'm an exchange student from China, and Chinese is my mother language. I like reading and I know a lot about Chinese culture and history. Besides, I speak English well and I am outgoing and easy to get along with. I think I will not only help your children learn the language well but also the culture.
I'd appreciate it if you would be so good as to give me a chance. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours respectfully,
